Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa who was remanded yesterday was admitted to the National Hospital for a sudden ‘medical check-up’ today. He was taken to the National Hospital from Welikada prison, where he is currently in remand custody.

Rajapaksa, who was arrested yesterday morning by the FCID was ordered to be remanded till August 1, for misappropriating state funds amounting to Rs. 33 million from the Divi Neguma Funds during the 2015 Presidential Election.
Rajapaksa’s out of the blue need for a medical check up comes amidst reports that he was planning to take part in a ‘Jana Satana’ Pada Yathra against the government. Incidentally, Rajapaksa is the main architect of the anti-government walk which is scheduled to take place later this month. The last time Rajapaksa was remanded, he got himself admitted to the National Hospital claiming he was sick.

This cunning fraudster is still having courage to do fraudulent acts by faking to be sick. I think it’s the fault of the government being so lenient to these mega fraudsters. If he is sick, then, why cannot the government say that he should stay in the prison hospital and let the doctors there treat his sickness? If he wants he should be allowed to pay and channel doctors to the prison hospital. Only if he has to undergo surgery, and not having the equipment in the Prison hospital, then only, he should be allowed to go to another hospital.
