The United National Party as the then main opposition took a firm stand in October 2013, when they unanimously decided to vote against the attempts made by the Rajapaksa regime to legalize casinos through a draft legislation which was presented in Parliament.
However, recent photographs of the Mayor of Colombo, UNP’s Ahamed Jamaldeen Mohamed Muzammil‘s full action playing high stakes in a casino is going viral in social media.
The UNP PC MP, President’s Counsel Srinath Perera wrote to the UPFP PC member Udaya Gammanpila the following letter in February 2014;
Mr Udaya Gammanpila,
District Leader of Colombo for the UPFA.
Dear Mr. Gammanpila,
We have come to know – through media reports – that you have launched your election campaign under the auspices of Defense Secretary Gorabaya Rajapaksa.
Gota and GammanpilaAlthough you brag about political ethics and adherence to election laws, you have launched your election campaign under the aegis of a government official, showing the level of your hypocrisy and duplicity.
It is an offence to use state officials and state property in an election campaign under any circumstance, and the fact that you have violated election laws in public at very outset of your campaign disqualified you from boasting about political ethics or “new political culture”
We are also interested to know why you – who stated to stand against establishing casinos in the country – chose to launch your campaign with the support of Mr. Rajapaksa, who explicitly favours casinos in Sri Lanka.
The Urban Development Ministry was the body that gave approval to start new casinos in Colombo, and Mr. Rajapaksa, in his capacity as the Secretary of the Defence and Urban Development Ministry, handles various key responsibilities in this regard. He has always been of the view that Sri Lanka should have an open policy towards casinos.
This brings into question your self-styled anti- Casino patriotism. It is clear that you have betrayed your policies, ethics and values for your new ‘position’ as the District leader for the UPFA.
We therefore challenge you to disclose your stand on several matters,
Have you changed your policy on Casinos?
Have you changed your view on ‘political culture’ and political ethics’ ?
What is the reason for sudden shift of core beliefs?
We openly challenge you to answer the aforesaid questions.
Thank you
Srinath Perera PC
Colombo District UNP Candidate

Why DOUBLE STANDARDS for Muzamil.
Who is a Muslim?
http://www.issaservices.com/islam/whoisamuslim.html
Muslim is an Arabic word that literally means ‘One who submits’. People who follow the religion of Islam are called Muslims. A Muslim is one who believes and declares that “there is no god except one God and prophet Muhammad is the last and final messenger of God”. This is know as Shahada (Declaration of Faith).
The are 5 Pillars in Islam. The Pillars do not talk about Gambling.
They can Gamble, they can have 4 wives, they can drink, can steal, can rape and can still be Muslims, even though only 4 wives is “Halkal”, and the others are Haram.
So, many Muslims will still vote for him, because he is UNP not JHU or Sinhala Ravya or Mahinda Rajapaksa or BBS.

Agree, but suppose one wife does not give him enough “fun”, and he goes to casinos, and the one-wife have been given the choice below:
a) I will have one wife and go to casinos, Haram . not-permitted by Islam, or
b) I will have one wife and NOT go to casinos, as it is Haram , not-permitted, and substitute that “fun” with 3 Extra Wives, “Halal’, Permitted, by Islam.
What would you choose, dearest First Wife.

certain type of fish is haram.
Iran produces one of the most delicious and expensive Caviar in the world from the egg of the fish family Sturgeon.
However Sturgeo fish family was initially declared haram (all fish without scales is haram)

There are not only Muslims, there are also Buddhists, Christians and Hindus who resort to practices that are prohibited by their religions. That does not mean that all Muslims, Buddhists, Christians and Hindus and the Religions as a whole should be insulted for the wrong behaviours of a few. It should be left to the other followers of the respective religions to deal with the offenders. If Aluthgama massacre of the Muslims is the reaction for any reason, then do you also think that the Tsunami that took the life of the people of other religions is also a reaction for some reason. There are Muzammils and others too in Sri Lanka’s politics who hood-wink the people and lead double lives; that it is the political culture seen now in Sri Lanka. People must strongly think of getting rid of such people from politics, whatever the race or religion they belong to, and bring in a new political culture.

He is not helping to bolster the image of Muslims in Sri Lanka, from the pics it pretty clear he is a seasoned campaigner and he is not bothered about any negative publicity. On the other hand not so long ago people played gambling with national wealth so this is nothing.

Ranil screamed before the elections stating that the public sector is over staffed. Yesterday he gave new appointments to unemployed graduates at BoC and PB with Ravi K.
Harsha was a critic of Nivard but has gone silent on Arjun Mahendran and the bond scam.
UNP were critical of fuel pricing and demanded a formula before the elections. Now reluctant to introduce due to up coming elections.
MARA ruined this country with his cronies but Ranil and team are no better.
All politicians are the same.

I wonder what the religious leaders of this country has to say. As a woman,if I enter politics decently dressed in a conventional way but without covering my head, religious leaders will protest and have a campaign not to vote for me and that I am not a good Muslim. Now unknowingly we Muslims, having a big say in the political decisions in the Colombo MC, have voted a mayor who is a casino player. Even if UNP nominates him, I hope the Muslims will refrain from voting him and the UNP for nominating him.

This is downright demeaning to Islam. If Muzamil was a private person he could be forgiven and let him answer for his sins to God or repent for his sins.
He being a public figure representing the Muslim Community and indulging publicly in acts of clear prohibition in Islam, cannot be condoned.
He should be exposed to what he is and it should be a lesson to all Muslim politicians to act in accordance with the the teachings of Islam or quit politics, without tarnishing the religion in the public domain.
Then it becomes a private life for whoever indulges in contravention of Islamic teachings and can be left for him and the Creator for his misdeeds.
Even then, as a community it is our duty to enlighten him on the wrath of God and try to guide him in the right path.
May God make this incident an eye opener form him to sincerely repent for his sins and guide him in the right path.

Even if he claimed to a Muslim why should it prevent him from frequenting Casinos.
Saudis are supposed to be the guardians of Islam. Don’t they visit casinos gamble away their ill-gotten wealth and frequent up market bars when they are out of the country and away from their family and law of their land? Not to mention the prostitutes they procure.
After all Mohamed Muzammil is only a politician. Expecting him to respect a particular religion is a fallacy.
Now let the voters decide whether he is the best person to run the city not based on his religious affinity but on his honesty and ability.

There can be, at least in theory, good politicians and bad politicians, and good Muslims and bad Muslims. Thus, if you take Muslim politicians, then four combinations are possible.
But the important thing to keep in mind is that one must not mix Religion and Politics! Since only politics bears relevance to good governance and not religion, it is best to vote for a candidate on the basis of his political ideology, rectitude and acumen, disregarding his religious piety and fervour.

He was elected Mayor by the voters of Colombo who are include Sinhalese, Muslims and Tamils and he happens to be a Muslim. That is all. He has no status whatsoever to represent the Muslim community or call himself a Muslim leader for that matter. If the Muslims accept him as their representative or leader then it will be inviting negative references on the whole community. The community should resolve that individuals who are hypocrites and deal double lives and use the name of the community for their personal gains are alienated from the community in the best interests of the community.

Every human being is gullible to be deceived by Satan.
Let us urge our brother to realize his mistake and repent during this Holy month of Ramadhan so that he may get the divine pardon for violating the commandment of Allah.
By the way, exposing someone’s sin is not encouraged in Islam, private counseling is the method prescribed in the religion. Since he is a politician holding highest office in the city the media is not merciful towards him.

Mayor Muzammil has transformed the CMC to make it one of the more efficient public organizations. He as well as all officers are available to resolve the problems faced by the public on the public day. He cooperated with Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to make Colombo a City that we can be proud of recently.
With the election of the UNP government of Srinath Perera, the city has lost its lustre. The pavement hawkers who were relocated to make the shops in Pettah accessible, have been reintroduced by Muzammil. The traders in these areas are complaining of a steep drop in business. I wonder whether there is a correlation between the addiction to Casinos and the return of the pavement hawkers?
Mayor Muzzamil, addiction to casinos is a psychiatric illness. Use the Ramazan fasting period to shun casinos and seek psychiatric treatment to get over this addiction. If not, this is the beginning of the end of your political career!

The Truth, and well spoken. His Lordship is a bloody disgrace and does not represent the Muslim community living in SL period. All we expect of him is to lead an exemplary life in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
Even at Muslim wedding functions where we encounter him, he will not want to with the lesser privileged humble, but will move only amongst circles of the English speaking elite. and is ever ready to be at the forefront (for the cameras) where it matters the most. He acts and behaves more like a non-Muslim and does not resemble a practicing Muslim. His bad habits, addictions, thoughts and actions says it all. Nothing he does with sincerity for his community, but purely for the sake of publicity and gaining people’s acceptance, not God’s acceptance.
I also hope his wife fails miserably in her campaign (as Campaign Leader) to get UNP to win again at the next hustings, in spite of everyone being fully aware that Colombo city has a strong UNP voter base. She will ultimately take credit but she doesn’t have to be in the driving seat to prove anything as that is a foregone conclusion. Perhaps, Ranil got it wrong this time, although we know her nomination was rejected once previously, and we also know how Mayor Muzammil in order to exact his revenge, was sabre rattling with threats to crossover and join MR’s government. Everyone was expecting it, and it became the talk of the town.

/

NV,
Point well taken, but my concern is because he is a public figure and he is supposed to be representing our community, whether we like it or not.
He should have ensured that his discreet activities were kept out of the public domain. If he is drinking or gambling in private, it is his own fate and will be answerable to God in the day of judgement, but to frequent public casinos in full public glare, after obtaining the votes of mostly Muslims, is deplorable.
Your point of even some Saudis gambling and womanising, out of their country is a private matter within the individual and the Creator, which is of course not in the public domain. If public figures get caught in act, I am sure there will be consequences for them too in this world as they are doing it publicly without any shame or concern for their religion, thereby setting a bad precedent to the general public, who look up to them.
That is the point, I am trying to raise here. Hope you agree with me.
