A group of Sinhala Ravaya protestors who entered the Kuragala archaeological site a short while ago has attempted to damage the Islam Holy site located at the premises.

The protesters ignoring an enjoining order issued against the demonstration by the Balangoda Magistrate Court had entered the archaeological site by force and demanded the demolition of the Islamic Holy site. They had also brought with them, equipment including metal rods which they had attempted to deploy in order to damage the shrine that is revered by Muslims.
However, timely intervention by the Police that used water cannons to disperse the protesters, had subverted the attempts to destroy the holy site.
Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said no arrests have been made so far but added further investigations are continuing in order to arrest those responsible for organizing the protest.

Why Double Standards for these Para-Criminals?
Level 1. Hate Speech that Causes minor incidents.
Level 2. Hate Speech that Causes Major incidents.
In both cases make them financially responsible as well for damages.
1. Why is it that somebody cannot throw a rock, shoot and damage property, and it is crime? Because it causes property damage.
2. Why is it that somebody cannot throw a rock, shoot and cause bodily injury or kill and it is crime? Because it causes bodily injury and killing.
3. If Hate Speech results in 1 and 2 above, it should be a crime.
It is the same as providing material support for the criminals. So, Sinhala Ravya, Para-Sinhala Ravya and others if their activities caused by their agents results in property damage and bodily injury, they should be accused for aiding those who committed the crime, and should be equally culpable.

Because this bill, beyond the purpose of passing that is to use against the minorities, it has no teeth against the Sinhala Intellectuals. They are protected by the Racist Sinhala Buddhist constitution. Under the constitution, the Buddhism has to be pampered against the other religions. In a competitive, democratic society how do you protect a religion, from the competition of the other religions? Only way is to pass laws like the one now they are milling and prosecute the minorities as they are being racist. .
If they are honest in ready to treat all religion equal, they might have brought an Amendment 18.5A to the constitution before 19A because that is more important to protect the people’s lives. Why no secular government? Why there is minister for Buddhism? Or even for another religion? Isn’t it to keep the people divided along the religious line?
International community was against the PTA. It is against the Emergency regulation. So the new Royal government has to have a way to arrest the Tamils, which is the so called LTTErs. That is the only purpose of this law. That is the only place it will be used.

Perhaps, this is because I am not fully informed of the proposed hate speech law. If you are informed of it please enlighten the readership of this so-called hidden agenda behind it. (Alternately, Could Colombo Page publish the proposed law once it is available?).
I agree, this type of laws can infringe upon other civil rights of the citizenry. However, it is no reason to stop enacting a legal framework to prohibit threatening or insulting speeches targeting certain sections of the community; especially threats and insults based on ethnicity, religion, etc. Freedom of speech is safeguarded by the Constitution and it is the right of the Supreme Court to ensure that right is preserved, and new laws are bounded by a well-defined framework.

What does it matter to, True Buddhists if this site existed or not? When Buddha preached his Philosophy there had been over sixty odd other Religious beliefs. There was no attempt by Buddha or any of his followers to destroy other faiths as false.
What gain any Buddhist would achieve by acts of vandalism other than contempt from all. Police at last seem to have woken up to protect than just be mere spectators as before. Trust they will not only protect but will apply the Law as well soon, arresting them immediately, because there is no further Political intervention. Didn’t they put plain cloth officers to investigate whether something is brewing. I have been mentioning on several occasions that our police is corrupt and something need to be done.
