Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi has ordered the police to record a statement from former foreign minister G. L. Peiris over the discovery of a suicide jacket among other explosives recovered in Chavakachcheri on Wednesday.

Hettiarachchi told a news conference at the government information department today that even though the discovery was ‘routine’ and based on a tip off, it appeared that the former foreign minister had more information about the explosives, and hence an investigation will be launched to obtain more details from his over his claims that the explosives were to be sent to Wellawatte.
Addressing a news conference following the discovery of the haul of explosives which also included 12 kilos of C4 explosives and ammunition in a house, Peiris claimed that the explosives including the suicide jacket was to be sent to Wellawatte. “The people need to know the truth. The government must not hide the truth from the people,” he said.
The former Minister went on to highlight that the latest discovery was a threat to national security and therefore the government must first and foremost ensure national security is safeguarded.
According to the police the explosives were wrapped in a Sinhalese language newspaper which was published in 2007. Police believed that the explosives were hidden during the war.

I have met him a couple of times when he was lecturing at colombo campus via a present day PC who also lectured as he was a gold medalist too (he is about to immigrate to canada) and another woman gold medalist.

It is a mistake to call such persons,educated or highly educated. Holding multiple degrees, publishing books and occupying academic positions, do not automatically imply that a person is educated . They may be highly literate, but definitely not educated. G.L. Pieris is the best example of an uneducated or miseducated, but highly literate person. Knowledge alone does not translate into education, however extensive it may be. He epitomizes what is wrong with our system of education and that of much of the world.

This is what I notice while moving with my colleague in EU countries. Educated means not the titles that a person has behind their names. The manner they behave is rather more important than anything else. Better schooling can guide simple man making him educated .. no degrees will necessarily be needed. Besides, degrees are focused on the special fields. Just because someone is a learnt doctor means, he could be good to his medical profesisons, but still not be good with his human values.
