Politicising Archaeology, Militarising Virtue, Gaslighting The Electorate

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“From now until the elections, we will not know when, and where, and how the fireball will fall on us, and what the nature of that fireball will be.” ~ Arundathi Roy (Election Season in a Dangerous Democracy – The New York Review of Books – 3.9.2018)

The Eastern province is the most ethno-religiously pluralist slice of Sri Lanka. It is home to more Tamils and Muslims than Sinhalese; its predominant language is not Sinhala but Tamil; and it has more kovils, mosques and churches than temples. Homogenising the East has been – and remains – a dream of extremists of all stripes, from Sinhala-Buddhists supremacists through the LTTE to Wahabi fundamentalists. For anyone who wants to trade in ethno-religious strife, there’s no place richer with possibility than the East.

Now the East is in the political crosshairs again. Making good a promise he made to his Buddhist Advisory Council, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has set up a task force for Archaeological Heritage Management in the Eastern Province. There’s no argument that the island’s rich archaeological heritage needs to be protected and preserved. But why restrict that necessary endeavour to the East? Is the country’s archaeological heritage limited only to the East? Or is it just in the East this heritage is perceived to be in danger?

Weaponising archaeology is a favourite tactic of extremists. The urge to use a ruin from the past to turn the future into a ruin is probably hardwired into the extremist brain. When a papyrus fragment said to be 2,700 years old was found in Judean desert in 2016, Israel’s Binyamin Netanyahu rushed to use it to further his occupationist agenda. What the BJP and Narendra Modi owe to the Ayodhya controversy is no secret. When the previous Rajapaksa administration held an Independence Day celebration in Trincomalee, then President Mahinda Rajapkasa used his speech to give a distorted version of the history of this ancient city, painting it in exclusively Sinhala-Buddhist hues.

“This is a Sinhala Buddhist country; we created its history, culture and civilisation,” claimed the BBS at a 2012 meeting in Matara. This majoritarian supremacist view (which denies and seeks to erase Lanka’s diverse history) seems to be the founding and guiding principle of the new task force. In composition it’s entirely mono-ethnic. The inclusion of the doyen of Sinhala-Buddhist archaeology and founder-chairman of the JHU, Ellawala Medananda Thero is another warning sign. (This monk informed the BBC in 2007 that Christian fundamentalist doctors are planning to infect leading monks by using HIV-infected blood. His approach to archaeology is almost akin. According to PK Balachandran, the monk claims that before Koneswarm was a kovil, it was a Buddhist temple). Another member, Panamure Thilakawansha Thero, is reportedly involved in the dispute over the Kanniya hot water springs. With such a membership, the task force cannot but promote a Sinhala-Buddhist agenda in the country’s most ethno-religiously pluralist province, pitting Sinhalese against Tamils and Muslims. It is like setting up a bonfire in a munitions factory.

Mahinda Rajapaksa removed all fetters on majoritarian supremacism. Gotabaya Rajapaksa has gone one step further, putting it on steroids.

In the run up to the 2019 presidential election, a story spread over the internet claiming that Muslim extremists have razed statues of the Buddha’s eighty great disciples built by the Rajapaksa administration in 2013. If the UNP wins the election, the same fate will befall the Samadhi statue, the Tholuwila statue, and Gal Viharaya, the story warned. In truth, the construction of the statues commenced in 2017, and ones lying on the ground are there because they had not been raised. This tale is a warning of how the worthy task of protecting our archaeological heritage can be turned into an anti-minority feeding frenzy. Given the mono-ethnic nature of the new task force, the question cannot but arise – will it use ‘Sinhala-Buddhist heritage’ to displace living Tamils and Muslims?

Setting mini-fires in the East might help the SLPP to widen the margin of its electoral victory; it might help burnish Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s image as the country’s new Sinhala Buddhist maha raju (high king). But weaponising the past as way of dominating the present often ends up killing the future. It is easy to set off ethno-religious fires but nearly impossible to manage them. The East can be a showcase of Sri Lanka’s rich demographic diversity, or it can be the country’s Achilles Heel. The LTTE might not have died an ignominious death, had Vellupillai Pirapaharan not mishandled the East. Are his conquerors reading to follow him down the same destructive and self-destructive path?

A Company of Virtuous Esquires

Soon after Mahinda Rajapaksa won his second presidential term, the state-owned ITN held a musical show titled ‘Jaya Jayawe’, one long panegyric to ‘King Mihindu’ and ‘Chief General Gotabaya’ who defeated the ‘demons’ threatening the motherland.

Today, the roles are in a state of flux. Chief General Gotabaya is president and King Mihindu is his prime minister. One kingdom, two kings is nothing but a recipe for chronic strife and instability. The jostling between the two brothers – and their acolytes – for primacy is likely to remain a defining factor in Lankan politics in the foreseeable future.

The brothers have common and contending goals. Both want to stymie all opposition and win a two-thirds majority at the parliamentary election. Once/if they move past that goal, contention rather than cooperation might become their dominant mode of engagement.

The setting up of a presidential task force ‘to build a Secure Country, Disciplined, Virtuous and Lawful society’ makes sense when seen in this context. The new task force is likely to function as a weapon of Rajapaksa power and Gotabaya power. Comprising of retired and serving generals, admirals, air marshals and police chiefs (all of them honoured with a suffix esquire, in contravention of the standard use of this word today), the task force is likely to protect Rajapaksa rule and, within it, Gotabaya dominance.

As with the task force on the archaeological heritage of the East, this task force too is headed by retired general Kamal Gunaratne. If Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the new Sinhala-Buddhist high king, Kamal Gunaratne is his chief general (maha senevi). That the retired lieutenant-colonel has such trust and dependence on the retired general is understandable, given their obvious political and moral-ethical affinity.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa once shared with BBC’s Stephen Sackur expressed a desire to hang war-winning army commander Sarath Fonseka for being a ‘traitor’. Speaking at a Viyath Maga seminar in October 2017, Mr. Gunaratne branded as traitors anyone supporting a new constitution; they deserve death and must be denied normal funeral rites, as the JVP notoriously did during the Second Insurgency, he claimed. With such men in charge, the kind of security, discipline, virtue, and legality Sri Lanka will experience is not hard to imagine.

Kavinda Isuru was remanded on April 25th 2020 and was dead by May 3rd. The authorities claim that he fell off a rope while trying to escape and died from the ensuing injuries. His parents have lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission alleging that he was beaten to death. Both his legs and one arm were broken, apart from other injuries including to the head, the complaint states.

In Dharga Town, the police allegedly assaulted an autistic boy for breaking the curfew. According to Thariq Ahmed’s father, when he reached the scene of the incident, he found his 14-year-old-son with his hands tied behind his back. When the boy was taken to hospital, the JMO reportedly scolded the father and the child, accusing them of belonging to the ‘nation’ (jathiya) who kill cows and spread corona. The four policemen on duty were suspended. Initial reports claimed that the suspension was due to their possible involvement in an assault on an autistic boy. A few hours later the story was upended; the policemen were suspended because they did not take the curfew-breaking child into custody but let him go. Not abuse of power but kindness of heart, not brutality but lenience was their crime.

In Elpitiya, the police was searching for a man suspected of purchasing a stock of stolen cinnamon. The man was not at home, so the police took away his 14 year-old-son instead, leaving a toddler all alone in the house. The police say they asked the minor to accompany them to assist in locating the father. Can the police ask a minor to accompany them, in the absence of any adult? Weren’t the guardians of law breaking the law? Is it ethical to get a child to turn in his father?

Are these not forewarnings of the sort of security, discipline, virtue and legality awaiting us in a Gotabaya country?

Gotabaya Rajapaksa pardoned a former military sergeant convicted of murdering eight civilian Tamils including a five year old boy. When the freed killer emerged from the prison, Kamal Gunaratna was at hand to meet and greet him. A good part of the world was appalled when they heard George Floyd begging for a chance to breathe, minutes, seconds before he died. What the last words, the last thoughts of that five-year-old child must have been we can only imagine. We can also imagine what virtue means in a land where such a murderer walks free, thanks to a presidential pardon. What virtue means, what discipline means, what security and legality means.

When Gotabaya Rajapaksa studied American history in order to become an American citizen, he may – or may not – have come into contact with Senator Joseph McCarthy. Like that modern day Torquemada, the Rajapaksas too see enemies everywhere, and believe in keeping the country on a permanent war-footing. The tasks allocated to the Company of Esquires include dealing with ‘anti-social activities and illegal activities of social groups, harmful to the free and peaceful existence of society at present in some places of the country.’ The wording is so amorphous, it probably can be interpreted in any which way necessary, including killing democratic dissent and snuffing peaceful dissenters.

Electoral highway robbery

The election will not be free and fair. We have been warned in advance. The pandemic will be turned into a bridge for the SLPP to reach its heart’s desire of a massive electoral win.

The police launched a brutal assault on a Black Lives Matter demonstration by the Frontline Socialist Party. The police acted brain-dead when confronted with massive crowds at Arumugam Thondaman and Marshall Perera funerals.

In the difference between the two antithetical official responses the current nature of electoral playing field is clearly visible. It is so uneven as to be more vertical than horizontal.

The SLPP will be allowed to act above the law, including social distancing regulations imposed by health authorities. The opposition will be persecuted for failing to keep even the most minute or impractical of health regulations.

The Rajapaksas can win a simple majority in a free and fair election, especially since the UNP and the SBJ are intent on self and mutual mutilation. But both Rajapaksa siblings want a two-thirds majority, albeit for contentious purposes. Their opponents will be persecuted for violating health regulations, for committing anti-social activities, for endangering the nation. The election commission might lodge protests, but the police are likely to turn a deaf ear. Any election official trying to uphold the law might end up like the principal of the Lumbini Royal College of Kandy who had to be hospitalised after being assaulted by the SLPP chairman of the Harispattuwa PS. A complaint was made, but 24 hours later the police was yet to even question the suspect.

When Attorney at law Swasthika Arulingam went to ask why the organisers of the BLM protest was arrested, the police promptly took her into custody. This is the second instance of a lawyer being arrested for what he or she did in line of professional responsibilities. Hejaaz Hizbullah was the first. Many more lawyers may join the list in the coming weeks and months, rendering it increasingly difficult for anyone facing Rajapaksa ire to get legal representation.

A deluge of minority phobia will be used to fill the gaps left by persecution and suppression. We might hear of resurgent Tigers, of Islamic Jihadists, even Christian/Catholic fundamentalists, all of them helping the opposition to prevent the true protectors of the country from safeguarding its true owners.

“The International (sic) has brought various ideas into our society…” complained Gotabaya Rajapaksa, when he was the defence secretary, in an interview with the ITN on 24th February, 2010  “‘Human Rights’, ‘Media Freedom’, various ideas such as these are given to us by The International (sic) to control our society.” As President, he is now trying to put his ideas into practice.

There is no such thing as a little bit of tyranny any more than there can be a little bit of a pandemic. Both are elemental forces which are hard to contain once they are unleashed. A truth we will know fully, starting August 6th, if the Rajapaksas get the two-thirds of their dreams.

Achiles heel of the current govt is they dont have brains but the muscles whatever the decisions they make. Low lives appointed from army seem to know nothing but to behave like street thugs. That Kamal Augnaratne is a criminal by every means but got elected to the very same manner is the luck of the president. This is called a land filled with fools.

      Dear rj1952,
      .
Yes, I think that you need educating; it ought to have been done sixty years ago, and why it is I who must try to do it, is an imponderable.
      .
You sent me an email address (not the one you use for personal affairs), and I wrote to you for the fourth time last night. The symptoms of poor education continue to be displayed.
      .
Every one of us has plenty of faults, and that includes me.
      .
Why this has to be done is because we are a functioning democracy (regular elections are held at great cost, and we seem to select the worst representatives. This cannot be prevented in August 2020, but a start must be made. It is not necessarily the case that I have the answer, but I shall proceed as if I do!
      .
And here are others like Bagehot (and Soma) who must also be addressed.

          Dear Rohan,
          .
I’m not surprised to find you at the “end of your tether”. Yes, I’ve been terribly insulting towards you, have I not? With a purpose.
          .
Why do you still use “rajapuka” instead of “Rajapaksa”?
          .
I grant that I ought not to highlight mistakes in language. We all make mistakes, so there I crave your pardon.
          .
Democratic? Yes. But this a “Public Forum” and we influence others. The August 5th Election is going to be a disaster. I will have to live here, trampled upon by jackboots. The vast majority of voters are “Swabasha speakers”. Nothing wrong. We must respect them to win their votes for progress.
          .
I don’t like what the Rajapaksas are doing; on the other hand, why be a “loyalist of the UNP” (now really in two pieces)? Both the two “National Level” parties are really “Sinhala Racist” – they pretend to represent you as well. To bargain with them, you, “a Tamil” must be seen to be neutral. Hold on to your views; change your tone.

      PART A

      Dear rj1952,
      .
I have emailed you many times, but you still don’t seem to realise the harm you are doing. The many “approvals” received must have been carelessly given because we are all fed up with the useless rogues elected to Parliament. In fact your comments make things worse.
      .
Non-English speaking Sri Lankans should never be insulted. That English is the foreign language to be taught to all Sri Lankans, if possible, is without question. I have repeatedly given you etymologies of these two terms: “vernacular” and “Swabasha”. Upto about six generations ago, not one of our ancestors used English; the local languages were “vernaculars” fit only for slaves is your current suggestion. “Swabasha” should only be used respectfully of the Sinhala and Tamil languages.
      .
Actually, it looks as though you’ve been taught English badly. Can’t you use English without resorting to words like “Yakkos”, and “pandu-bandu”, “kallathoni”? I can ascribe some meanings to them, but I find them offensive and never use them myself.

      PART B
      .
Then there are malapropisms. “abiding”, not “aboding”; you meant to say “emaciated”, didn’t you? not “emancipated”. Please use such “English” only in Australia, not with Sri Lankan readers. Even more Australians than Sri Lankans will reject you. It’s just that many ignore all that you say, and don’t bother to even say they disapprove.
      .
I’ve only just started! I haven’t got down to the social, political and psychological implications. I will have to demonstrate the perception that attitudes like yours exist, naturally drive people to vote for unsatisfactory candidates.
      .
I’m full of despair when I think of the results that we have to anticipate. How effective exposing your culpability is going to be, at this stage, I’m not sure.
      .
      Please comment more responsibly!

          Dear rj1952,
          .

Why not avoid the three word/expressions which draw on Sinhalese? Let it remain just a suggestion by me – let’s move on.
          .
Similarly, with where the old legends. You see Champa explaining the colour of Kavan Tissa’s skin. About the time of our birth, common sense prevailed. Where there isn’t certainty, make the assertion, but let’s politely move on.
          .
If we learn to live and let live where there is no serious issue involved, we could learn to have peace in this land.

Re: 3rd para of your comment:
What you say is not true.
They are not “main minority areas.”
The lands in the Eastern Province were full of archaeological ruins before Muslims forcibly acquired them.
Muslim politicians wanted a separate state in the Eastern Province so they settled Muslims after bulldozing a large number of Buddhist ruins in the Province which would otherwise have been protected as World Heritage sites. For example; Muhudu Maha Vihara of Pottuvil (the ancient name of the city was Bodiwela) and Magul Maha Vihara of Laggala, both monasteries of which were built by King Kavan Tissa in the 2nd Century BC in honour of his legendary Queen Vihara Maha Devi, originally had over 10,000 acres. Today, Muhudu Maha Vihara has only 13 acres as a result of the systematic destruction of our Sinhalese Buddhist heritage in the Eastern Province by Muslims.
From North coast to South coast and East coast to West coast, every inch of this land is ours.
We have ample evidence to prove that.
Therefore, there is no need for Major Generals or TV Mudalalis for the management of our archaeological heritage, as it gives a wrong impression that we try to protect lands rightfully belonging to temples by force and through communal disharmony.

You ask “Are you trying to infer that under the Rajapaksa kallathoni the rights of the minorities have been restored and that they are living in absolute racist bliss as equal citizens?”
The minorities in Sri Lanka have all the freedom to live, travel, work, study, engage in politics and practice religious activities in any part of the country and even blast bombs and kill Sinhalese.
What other missing rights are you talking about?
Tamils and Muslims are the Kallathonies who migrated and were also hired from South India. They enjoy more rights than majority Sinhalese as Sinhalese are denied equal rights in Northern and Eastern Provinces since the period of Dutch.
Yakkhas don’t descend from Orissa or anywhere. They are the owners of this land.
Don’t mix up Yakkhas with Vijaya Hora, for your convenience.

        Part ONE
        .
Thanks, Champa, for teaching me something of our heritage.
        .
I must confess that I know little of the details of our history, but I learn. Fairly recently I visited some of these places – I know that all that should have been done much earlier.
        .
Some retired teachers of the Maha Vidyalaya where I had taught, had formed an Association, and so we visited some of these places. I think that I’ve told you very clearly that my family background is essentially Christian, but I try to be objective with regard to all accounts of history. Having two committed Marxists in the group helped.
        .
The Muhudu Maha Viharaya, with all those female statues is a vivid memory. You’ve got a typo in the case of the location of the Magul Maha Viharaya, haven’t you? Lahugala, not Laggala (the electorate of Mony Gopallawa). See how shameful my knowledge of those places.
        .
I have heard Tamils claiming that Kavan Tissa was actually a Tamil-speaking king. I was taught about him originally in Grade 2 – how he’d been a coward. Or a man of Peace! I now realise that so many interpretations are possible.

I admire the balance with which you discuss these controversial subjects. You clearly know a good deal of history, but isn’t it so long ago that it’s not possible to be dogmatic about ethnic identities? I’m sure that thousands of acres would have been bequeathed to these temples at a time when our populations were smaller. Also, some of those Muslims there now would have had ancestors whose religions and ethnicities were nether Islamic or “Moor” – whatever that may be. I suggested that each of us thinks back eight generations – 128 ancestors at that point. Or it could have been only around 120 – intermarriage may mean that somebody was my ancestor twice or thrice over! I’ll take any bet not one human being is sure!
        .
In many respects this is similar to the situation in Israel, isn’t it? It is American Evangelical Christians who appear keenest to advance Jewish ownership theories.

By destroying stone inscriptions and old heritage sites built by old Tamil kings i= and acquiring control over the Very old temples is the low-grade political strategy used by GOTA’s government. No one will belive that he lived in the US for 12 years. His low-grade attitude of not respecting the heritage of the country and other religions as per Buddha dharma reflects what is in his corrupt mind. He is in the same boat as the Buddhist monks with sunglasses and cell phones in their hands who are a disgrace to Buddhism. Some argue with people on the road like thugs

Many Germans in the 1930s believed that things so absurd cannot really happen to them. They happened. Unable to sustain delusions of grandeur, the German leaders used their repressive organs to push the country’s manpower and industrial capacity to unsustainable limits. The World was forced to deal with them and it did at terrible cost.
The Tigers tried to do it with the small Tamil community. The World was minded to ignore them. But the global growth of their machinery for war, fraud and repression, made them too much of a nuisance to the world order and they were dealt with.
Lanka’s current leaders drive their delusions of grandeur on borrowed money and have no desire to cannibalize the country to make themselves a nuisance beyond our borders. The World is likely to shrug us off as a laboratory for social science research. Something that we have been from the 1970s.

      1. Archaeological Chakravarthi Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thero
      2. The Chief Prelate for the Northern and Eastern two Provinces, Chief Sanganayake of Thamankaduwa Direction, and Chief Incumbent of Arisimalai Aranya, Ven. Panamure Thilakawansha Thero

      10. H.E.M.W.G. Dissanayake Esquire Provincial Land Commissioner, Eastern Province

Why don’t you advice the junta to let PEOPLE make their own decision?
This looks like an desperate attempt to win votes, make the voters uninformed choices and finally the stupid attempt leading to militarisation of Archaeology, and destruction of history.

          EE,

Let s keep it as a country/nation -not only southerners but also notherners became violent and it costed thousands of human losses across the country- but there, we should not focus only ON sinhalayo – because the country belongs to all those who born to the island. Your repeated SO CALLED SINHALAYO are the ones who ignored it, and further ignoring real issues of the destitutein the country today.

Right at the moment, devildom is being built by a group of southerners, being born to Medamulana- that is going to be the problem as of now. I have no doubt, the nature would destroy those monuments built on the sweat of the tax payers, though incumbent president thought to clean it after being caught. There are common parlances that even burials would be damaged by lightening and thundering, if they produced criminals/looters of the funds. That is the case with Rajapakshe -parents… like or not, bleieve or not this is the truth about them.

In sanity led environments, the leaders after having served to the nation, just relinquish their power greedy agendas. So is what you get to see in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, South Korea or anywhere democracy led governances take place. But our hell filled with stupid men of your nature- donot even care about anything but let CRIMINALs to stay leeched to ruining politics creating further problems to the loads of accumulated over the years.

I have no idea as to why you behave so mischievous on and on- the kind of black sheeps are there -we need to treat you with some special care – Mr SM would perhaps say, it is the nurture than the nature :( what caused you to behave so right ?

All in all, let me elaborate you that I am no means a sympathizer to NEC or any other local groups, but I would respect today s JVP (forgetting their 89 insurgency fully) and SJP considering the composition of them and their abilities. We cant disgree with Mr SP becasue he worked diehard during previous govt by providing houses to the poor. Mr SP lived in London and i was known to his colleagues to that point in time. He is a gentle sort of a person by his nature. Education in UK and US strenghthened his profile. His daily agendas as a powerful minister of pervious govt were not comparable to that of any ministers or of president of the incumbent govt. All right thinkers would have to agree with me :)
Sirisena himself encouraged him even if SIRISENA was later caught by MAFIA BOSS et al for his own political survival. That is why Sirisena as of today is seen as the most hated person in SRILANKEN politcs.

It is exactly this kind of political hogwash that finally led to the Easter bombing.
    .
Intelligence was received two weeks prior. Growth of Islamic movements was very well known for years. Why then the officers on ground failed to take precautionary action? Because they were well conscious of the thinking of Ranil Wickramasinghe government of the day. They know what they would be accused of if they went ahead and searched or arrested any Muslims on their own discretion. It is easy to blame them after the event ignoring the fact that their hands were tied all along.
    .
Let us say Zaharan group was taken in for questioning two weeks earlier based on the information received from India. Now we are in a space where there wasn’t any bomb blast to talk about and you are harrassing some innocent Muslims, colluding with India.

Mahinda Rajapakse family is the worst enemy of Sinhala Buddhist people of Srilanka. They are very funny to betray Buddhist Sinhala in order to become the richest family in Srilanka and to make them as the powerful at the expense of Buddhism and Sinhala civilisation. No one in the Mahinda family sacrificed their life or spent a penny from their own pocket to the people and country. There are over 100000 Sinhala youths and families lost their lives and remain in poverty to fulfil Mahinda families fake propaganda. Mahinda or Gota don’t believe in Buddha. More tha Buddha they believe in Thirupathi Vengadesa.
Gotabaya’s election drama is to get two third majority. This can be only done by aggressive attack on other cultures, other religions, and other communities. They do not want peace in this country and they will never ever allow peace to this country. Gotabaya is a silent murderer. Full of venom on his blood.

“Mahinda Rajapakse family is the worst enemy of Sinhala Buddhist people of Srilanka.”

The worst enemy of Sinhala Buddhist people in Sinhale is ‘Para’ Demalu from Hindusthan who invaded Sinhale 52 times, massacred Native Sinhalayo and destroyed the economy they built by constructing massive reservoirs and highly advanced irrigation systems in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Kingdoms located in North Eastern part of the country and the descendants of ‘Para’ Dravida laborers brought by Portuguese to Yapanaya who turned against Native Sinhalayo that gave them citizenship and slaughtered them for three decades to grab a part of the Land of Sinhalayo and Vedda Eththo to create a separate State based on a bogus claim ‘Traditional Homeland’.

“They do not want peace in this country and they will never ever allow peace to this country.”

Tisaranee Gunasekara has presented a perfect picture of the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka. I appreciate her courage in warning the Sri Lankan citizens of the forthcoming dangers and the unity of the country will be in shambles. Gota fols his hands near to his chest without realizing that such gesture sends the message that his Soul recognizes everyone in the country as a President. Only God should save the country if the people cannot decide for themselves.

What I write now is a real anecdote, not a concocted one. Some 60 years ago, locals exulted with pride to tourists from Germany, that the ruins in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa which they had seen dated back to 1,000 to 2,000 years. The Germans responded with pride of achievement, ” Germany was in ruins in 1945, we have rebuilt our country”. China has done the same with her modern miracles?
We Tamils yet speak about the Jaffna Library that was. Did Egypt overwhelm the Nile with copious tears of wrath and lament? The modern one at Alexandria is a marvel to the world in ultra modernity. Is China any different? Internet displays her modern achievements. Who is not left breathless by the dimensions of Three Gorges Dam? Benefits flowing therefrom are greater than the waste and destruction of centuries from the Yangtze.
The principal benefit we can derive from remembrances of our past glory is the enrichment of our consciousness. ” Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime”, said the English poet. Do we endeavour to? What I learnt at age 8, in grade 3 in our Tamil text on Ceylon history, I yet cherish even after 74 years.

There is a wrong assumption that archaeological heritage equals religious heritage or Buddhist archaeology to the exclusion of all other aspects of how humans lived in ancient times and the built artifacts that remain to tell their stories. If these two distinctly different aspects are conflated to gain political traction or ethnic supremacy it will deprive many citizens of future generations who value their own heritage of an opportunity to cherish them.

    TG,
You are right when you raise the question:
“is it just in the East this heritage is perceived to be in danger?”
It is not only in the East, in the North also the Sinhala heritage sites are in danger. President should have included both North and East.
In 1983, Mr. Cyril Mathew drew the attention of UNESCO to the destruction of cultural heritage sites in the North and made an appeal for help to protect them by submitting a report entitled ‘An Appeal to UNESCO to Safeguard and Preserve the Cultural Property in Sri Lanka Endangered by Racial Prejudice, Unlawful Occupation or Willful Destruction’.
The first Sinhala Kingdoms Anuradhapura (377 BC – 1017AD) and Polonnaruwa (1056 AD – 1310 AD) from where Sinhala Kings ruled the country were in North Eastern part of the country. Therefore, there are many archaeological sites that are linked to Sinhala Buddhist culture and heritage in this area. These Kingdoms faced the threat from Dravida invaders and had to be abandoned. Later these areas were occupied by the descendants of Dravida laborers and Muslim refugees from Hindusthan. Both these groups have vandalized many Sinhala Buddhist Heritage Sites because to them ‘These are not Ours’. The Department of Archaeology has failed to stop this.

        PIRABAKARAN,
The North and East of Sri Lanka that Demalu (Tamils) in Yapanaya claim as their ‘Traditional Homeland’ was the area where the first Sinhala Kingdom Anuradhapura and the second Kingdom Polonnaruwa were located. Demalu (Tamils) who are the descendants of Dravida slaves brought by Portuguese to Yapanaya are occupying the land belong to Sinhalayo. Please return the land to rightful owners.

Because of the bright decision taken by the ‘Parippu Dropper’ he himself lost his life, 1,165 returned in body bags and more than 3,000 were wounded. The cost of the blunder was estimated at over 10.3 billion Rupees. If they make the same blunder again, then their heads should be examined. After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, India does not care for Demalu in the North. Now they care for ‘Indian Tamils’ in Sri Lanka.

          Eagle

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at your ignorance. I am a Tamil born in the district of Anurathapuram . I am a full blooded Rajarata man. I know it will be a surprise to a lot of the people these days to hear that there were Tamil natives in Rajarata not so long ago. The final ethnic cleansing of the Tamils in Rajarata took place in 1977 when my family moved up to Vanni.

We Rajarata Tamils didn’t have any problems with our Sinhala Buddhist ethnic cousins ( I am a Tamil Hindu) until morons like you started popping up from nowhere in public discussion Fora and start to spew anti Tamil venom.

You say : “he himself lost his life, 1,165 returned in body bags and more than 3,000 were wounded.” thanks to my name sake Velupillai’s youngest son from VVT.

What did you learn from the LTTE V IPKF battle ? We proved beyond any reasonable doubt that despite the Sinhala racist propaganda that we are loyal to India and must go to Tamilnadu, that we Eelavars are the true sons of this soil to which over 100000 young Tamil lives were sacrificed to liberate. Don’t delude yourself by thinking that we will allow the Sinhala racists to do any more land grab in our Home ( HOLY) Land.

Appointing a military officer as the Head of the PTF for Archaeological Heritage Management in the Eastern Province is a joke.
The inclusion of Derana Mudalali, Dilith Jayaweera who insulted Lord Buddha and whose TV channel is famous for inciting Sinhalese against Muslims shows that there is an ulterior motive.
The President has silenced Buddhist Priests, fake patriots and media.
The Buddhist priests are now so terrified that they maintain silence even when the President encourages his fake lawyer Ali Sabry to file a case against one of the Buddhist priests for exercising freedom of speech. What is ironic is that the said priest didn’t have any problem giving out his opinion freely prior to this, especially during the Presidential election.

      Dear Champa,
Thank you. You are spot on. Dilith Jayweera ahs been ruining srilanken society. This channel should be banned in Srilanka. I have no idea why the kind of TV channels behave today at will. Dont they have any kind of code of ethics to adhere ? Hiru TV is beyond all bearing. But both these channes score record high rates ?.
If GR is people s president, he has to stand against MEDIA mefia men in this country above anything other crimes.

I know DJayaweera in late 80ties. He did not have any kind of wealth to that point in time. I have no doubt, black money of Rajapakshe family – to the very same investments such as peacock palace, his TV channel Derana came in to being. Thanks to the kind of idiots, today, many among the youth seem not respecting anyone – his devil-may-care attitude through by his TV programs have been killing srilanken society.

Did the anti Muslim Rajapaksa’s get this “brilliant” idea from Israel?

“The Israeli government is planning to spend 60 million shekels ($16.6 million) on excavation projects under Al-Aqsa Mosque, amid calls for illegal Jewish settlers to storm the Muslim holy site, Ma’an has reported. A draft resolution on the issue will be presented by Minister of Culture and Sport Miri Regev, with the funding provided by her department and the Department of Education over the next two years.”
    And
“Israel has continued to excavate the ground beneath the Noble Sanctuary, in the search for evidence of an ancient Jewish presence in the area, including the existence of a Jewish Temple. Such excavations weaken the foundations of Al-Aqsa Mosque. This, say critics, is the real reason for the digging, because Jewish extremists want to destroy the mosque and build a temple in its place.”

Israel is one of the most disliked nations in the world, and it looks like the Rajapaksa’s want to take our country in the same direction.

The hungry looking ‘Eagle Eye’ is always on the prowl looking for dead carcasses to peck out for putrid offal. Whenever he writes something related to history, archaeology or ethnicity he always try to interpret facts with distorted notions with the sole idea to beguile the gullible masses to satisfy his racial prejudice. As Hilda Van Stockum said ” It is much easier to believe lies than the truth because lies are manufactured to satisfy the emotions”. It is still more dangerous if one tries to distort history and interpolate with fallacies which is against the moral and ethics of journalism.
According to Wikkipaedia , history is what happened in the past which is fixed in time and cannot be changed. The past is concrete and unchangeable and history is an ongoing conversation about the past and its meaning.
Sinhala historians and archaeologists such as Deraniyagala, Gunawardana,Seneviratne who are considered as principled and unbiased writers are worthy of mention in this regard. Anthropologist Gananath Obeyesekera has written extensively about Buddhism, Ethnicity and Identity the historical perspective of the Sinhala race and its origin. I will reserve mention learned Tamil Historians and archaeologists now at the moment.
Recently there had been articles very constructive and informative in these columns by Lakmal Harischandra, Chanaka Gajanayake , Tisaranee Gunasekera and others which are really worthy to read and emulate .

Tamils from 1958 and muslims after ester bombs are suffering under singala budist domination.leave alone tamils muslims always from the days if independent srilanka washed the back side of singala governments and after 1983 replaced tamils in the government service thinking they are always safe and danced in the streets of colombo eating kiribath with singalease when the government declared the death of PRBAKARAN.Just few years after they got the taste of singala budist kirbath which became karibath.now the history is repeating and it is the turn for anti SLPP AND ANTI GOTHA,MAHINDA,BUDIST GROUP TO EAT THE KARIBATH AFTER THE NEXT ELECTION RESULTS.

Tisaranee ….This is called pay back time. From late seventies, Tamils, Muslims and LTTE started erasing all traces of Sinhala Buddhist archaeological heritage from North and East. Until the land was liberated from the extremists, government could not access to check this or restore this damage. Land around old temples which were demarcated as a part of the temple were illegally occupied by Tamils and Muslims and built houses. If you can not see this wrong, your are blind. No it is payback time. The archaeological land boundaries will be remarked as per the original demarcations and illegal occupiers will be given alternative land. Minorities can not say one area of Sri Lanka is theirs by simply removing historical traces. When GR campaigned he asked minorities to join him and they flatly refused saying we don’t want to be part of your decision making. So now he is making decisions with the group who was willing to be with him. Now you can’t complain.

SLPP is asking again minority to join them. This is the second and last chance. If they do not respond favourably, he will continue with same type of task forces in the future. So join him with principled stand and make collaborative changes with him, not going against him. Otherwise he will make structural changes, no one can undo in the future. He has the mandate for him with one group. If you are willing to accept democracy as the governance method, you need to be ready to accept good and bad of the system.

      Atu,
Do you know that Mahinda is not an SLPP? He was an SLFP and still SLFP. Its like dual citizenship hold by Gotabaya Rajapaksa. They can be here and there by cheating the Buddhist Sinhala. Buddhist Sinhala has a dress code and Gotabaya is against the Buddhist Sinhala dress code. SLFP now asking to join them now because they are ready to cheat Buddhist Sinhala. Now Mahinda says they are ready to give land and police powers to North East if the TNA supports them. Don’t forget Mahinda paid 5 billion rupees to TNA MP in October 2018 during the coup against Srilanka constitution. Poor Buddhist Sinhala were cheated by Mahinda again and again, not the Tamils or Muslims. You don’t need to wait more than six months to see the true face of Mahinda family.

TG is christian, anti Sinhalese culture mafia and prostituting to foreigners and she was ex President Premadasa hack.
What does she know what is going on in East?
We have rich heritage in East and North and some are Seruwavila temple, and other is Thiriyaya temple suppose to house Lord Buddhas hair. Our family have been looking after these 2 temples for more than 60 yrs and there are scattered Sinhalese civilisation all over east and north.
Colombo educated brown nosing hack that sucking up to christian masters cannot know what we have here.
Ltte try to destroy these and now isis clan is doing the same with patronage from UNP and Ranil’s clan for votes or hatred toward rich culture.
If we have people like ranil, mangala who are using wrong orifice for procreation and have no kids due this problem, do you think they care about our civilisation ?

The Tamils have lived in a contiguous territory in the Northeast as the predominant inhabitants for more than a period of 2000 years. They had developed and created everything there. Cleared the jungles, created fields, constructed sources of water supply, developed agriculture, industry trade in the region . Created kingdoms and chiefdoms and built ancient historic Hindu temples and Buddhist Viharas there .
In the traditional system of administration this area was deemed as historical habitation of the Tamils by the kings of southern Sri Lanka. When Tamil origin king Sapumal Kumara or Chenpakka Perumal of Kotte, conquered Jaffna it was not annexed to the kingdom of Kotte. It was governed as a separate Kingdom.
According to Tamil tradition, Sapumal constructed the Kanthaswamy temple as a temple of royal court at Nallur. He had also issued coins in the name of the God.

he main difference between the Sinhalese and Tamils was in language. There are customs, linguistics traits, and physiological characteristics common to both peoples. The vocabulary of the Sinhalese language is largely Prakrit , with large amount of Tamil based words but the structure is Dravidian. There are a large number of ancient Tamil inscriptions in Tamil Brahmin have now been recently discovered in Eastern Sri Lanka , the Vannni and even Jaffna with regards to Naga chieftains. The kinship terms are common and they are not Indo-Aryan. In Sinhala, they say Amma and Thatta. Akka Nangi and Aiya all Tamil. The word’ Thatta’ sounds Indo-Aryan. But, it is not so. In ancient Tamil, you have the word ‘Thatai’. In 15th century religion also became a criterion of ethnic identity, around that time the two peoples had become separated in language and religion. Now Sinhalese Buddhist Fascists are trying rewrite and create fake history and convert everything ancient and Tamil , Hindu Buddhist and now even Islamic to Sinhalese Buddhist

        Siva Sankaran Sharma,
These are what we call ‘Surangana Katha’ fabricated by the catchers of racist k-thoni Jelva Nayakam who were entrusted to distort history of Sinhale. First thing they did was condemning the Great Chronicle ‘Mahawansa’ as fiction. Unfortunately Sinhala ‘Kalu Suddas (majority Christians) did not take any action to stop this masquerade. Tamil Diaspora used these fabricated stories to mislead the International Community very effectively to get their sympathy. Successive Governments also miserably failed to challenge Tamil Diaspora and tell the truth to the International Community. When we tell the truth, Demala people get irritated because ‘Truth is a Bitter Pill to Swallow’.

If Gotabays archeological junta destroys old heritage sites and rebuilt history the foreign expatriate population should carry out a campaign for Tourists saying that what they will be seeing in Sri Lanka is not a true heritage site but Army controlled sites. Never to believe what the tourist guide says. There is no point in spending thousands of dollars to explore distorted heritage. This will affect Sri Lanka economically. What dirty tactics adopted by FOTA. He may even destroy some archeological finds in the Museum. 1815 British Kabdyan kingdom may disappear as some signtories are in Tamil, In short, he is behaving like Hitler

      Kuviyam,
Do you think foreign tourists are naive to believe such stories.
The guys who are suffering from ‘Inferiority Complex’ after the humiliating defeat in 2009 write all kinds of rubbish for self-satisfaction.

    • 1

      PART ONE
      .
      Dear Kuviyam,
      .
I agree. Except that it’s not Tourists and the dollars coming in from tourists that matter as much as`that “The Truth”, as stated by SSS just above you, will be lost for ever. Already, it is pretty difficult to communicate across communal lines. The next generation will not be able to communicate at all.
      .
It is best to admit that there are individuals from all three major communities to blame. See my exchange, above, with “rj1952” a “Colombo Tamil” origins from Jaffna, no doubt, Rohan Johnpillai – now living in Melbourne. In my efforts to “educate” him, I’ve actually been insulting him so much that I’m grateful that he’s bearing up so well.
      .
These issues no doubt stir our deepest emotions. However, it is important that we talk rationally to each other. My message to you is that there still are some Sinhalese who understand something of what you say. I also appreciate your desire to live in harmony.

      PART TWO
      .
In that respect, see what “Champa” has said above. I have no idea whatever as to who “she” is. Her persona is that of a nationalist – both Sinhala and Buddhist. I realised many years ago that she states honestly what she sees as the truth.
      .
As for the immediate future, with elections, I see absolute disaster. Will anybody think before voting? So few, that we will make no difference. Thereafter, the final and total disappearance of “Truth”.
      .
And that “truth” is that there is layer after layer of different civilisations. The original mistake was made by “D.S. Senanayake” (a man I never knew, so the reference is really to a Sinhalese “movement”) to “reclaim” our heritage. At least now, will we stop trying to use Armies to establish the truth?
      .

        Dear SM,
Did you return home safe ? Hope SKOLE MAHATHTHAYA enjoyed a lot having seen the grand kids in Cmbo. I was very scared of hearing that you nevertheless travelled to Mgama by a bus – amidst various restrictions with the transport. Sure, we watch them through magnified glasses us being out of the country. To tell you the truth, I today respect only a few in my home country – in that portion I have already put you as well.

However, i dont want mlechcha men to hurt you by any means. Thep pen of you the kind of senior citizens of my motherland can really move a lot if collectivity would do the job well.
        :
Btw, I dont think CHAMPA is female. What do you make of it ?
I now feel he should be the one who commented using the avatar ” LEELA” nearly 5 years ago. But I really like her/his comments today becasue unlike some others, not attacking anyone but being multifaceted.

ITJP who collects evidences of Rapist Army activities, have taken evidences from Dr.Varatharaja about the “Lies Agreed Upon” lies and the tortures used for concoct the movie. British law company Bell Potinger was said to be the editors & couches to this movie. This has been public knowledge. That time’ UNSG, even after knowing that the witnesses for the movie had gone under torture of Rapist Army, still viewed that movie and commented because of the Malaiyalee Nambiar. Rapist Army major General received promotion recently. ITJP has released its proves to expose the Sinhala Intellectuals, or the Maha Viyath’s games. Now This guy has filed a case in Lankawe. I am not sure how the case location works in cases like this. But ITJP must arrange lawyers (like Thavaraja PC) in Lankawe and counter sue the Rapist Army and leaders for War crime. Bell Portinger must be forced to appear as wittiness for ITJP. They should try to make this as a floodgate opportunity to channel million cases pending but Lankawe courts refusing to take up these.

Many Germans in the 1930s believed that things so absurd and brutish as fascist repression cannot really happen to them.
Lanka’s current leaders drive their delusions of grandeur on borrowed money and have no desire to cannibalize the country to make themselves a nuisance beyond our borders, however miserable it is for people within. The World is likely to shrug us off as a laboratory for social science research on chronic conflicts. Something that we have been from the 1970s.

      Rajan Hoole,
You illustrate Tigers comparing their objectives to those of the Germans of ’30s. It was our history that lead to the birth of LTTE. Their initiation was for a noble purpose. Their beginning was against a community bent on suppressing their docile counterparts. What they evolved into was a regrettable saga. Your comparison is unfair.

        Nathan,
I see similarities mainly in how they developed. Both came to be determined by the way they tried to acquire total control over one community, their own, by eliminating all dissent. That they both achieved, and then they faced external constraints in trying to stabilise themselves. Nazism already had its eyes ideologically on world conquest. The Tigers wanted the world to leave them alone, to manage just the Tamils.

    Dear Sinhala_Man and rj1952,

Whilst the two of you fight like two bulls in a Spanish bull-ring, such should not be either the reason or the effect of this article.
Both of you, fighting your age and ego does not simply look like agreeing on some common facts. You may take your ego battles elsewhere, but a public forum like the CT is definitely is not the “battle ground” for such.
Reverting back to the topic of “Politicising Archaeology, Militarising Virtue, Gaslighting The Electorate”, I am not sure even if the authour has addressed in adequate detail. Whilst I agree with the first two phrases, and agree with the abuse of executive power in those areas, I am yet to understand the third phrase of the main title, that it means and how has it being done.
Do pardon my arrogance, Ms. Tisaranee G, but I’d like you to elaborate on that part of your article pls.

Don’t Rajapakses have Muslim Blood in them? They are not original Sri Lankans. Their ancestors came from Malacca and are Christians. Some of them became Muslims to get favours from Arab Traders.

“The brothers have common and contending goals. Both want to stymie all opposition and win a two-thirds majority at the parliamentary election. Once/if they move past that goal, contention rather than cooperation might become their dominant mode of engagement.”

Absolutely Right. Can’t agree with you More. I wish good luck to the brothers in getting the 2/3rd majority they are clamoring for in Public. But, I am sure that they must be secretly praying that they DON’T Really get the 2/3rd majority. After all, they are smart enough to know that the 2/3rd will be the Beginning of the Family Squabble and the End of the Family Rule for EVER. How wonderful would it be for Mother Lanka.
