Former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said the President had asked him to tender an apology in order to get a Cabinet portfolio.

Fonseka. Addressing a UNP meeting in the Mawanella area, said he would never apologize to the President for a ministerial portfolio.
A harsh critique of President Mathripala Sirisena, Fonseka’s name was axed by the President at the eleventh hour when appointing new Cabinet ministers on Thursday. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe nominated Fonseka to be appointed the Minister of Sustainable Development and Wild Life.
“When Rajapaksa put me in jail he wanted to me to apologise in exchange of release. I refused to comply. I was offered millions of rupees for a mere apology, but I never changed my position. Do you think I will tender an apology today in order to get a ministerial position? ” Fonseka asked.
He also hit out at the allegations connecting him to an alleged conspiracy to kill President Sirisena. “That is all bunkum. I have conspired to kill only one person and that is Velupillai Prabhakaran.”

I believe Ranil should have stood up for SF as a ‘leader’ would do, rather than meekly surrendering to Sirisena’s demands. Ranil has proven himself again and again that he is not a leader.
I don’t pretend to be a constitutional lawyer, but Section 43(2) of the Constitution states that the President shall, on the advice of the Prime Minister, appoint from among Members of Parliament, Ministers, to be in charge of the Ministries so determined. It seems to me that it’s the prerogative of the Prime Minister to select who he wants in the Cabinet and, the President shall appoint them. Why didn’t the Prime Minister stand his ground? It seems as if Sirisena asks Ranil ‘jump’, he says ‘how high, Sir’. Bloody wimp!
