While the United National Party is planning to continue its fight against the prorogation of Parliament and the appointment of a new Prime Minister, President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to keep the Ministry of Law and Order under him.
Taking part in a political discussion on a private TV channel, a short while ago, UPFA MP Wimal Weerawansa said the President had decided to keep the Law and Order Ministry, which overlooks the Police, under his purview.
This comes in the wake of Sirisena’s accusations that the Police did not properly investigate into the alleged conspiracy to assassinate him in which, the President said, a UNP Cabinet minister was also involved.
Meanwhile, UNP Parliamentary group members Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Wasantha Senanayake, Suresh Vadivel took oaths in their new positions today while Ananda Aluthgamage, who was the first UNP MPs to offer support to Rajapaksa, also received a deputy minister’s post.
The new Cabinet members appointed today are as follows,
Mahinda Rajapaksa: Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs.
Nimal Siripala de Silva: Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation.
Dr. Sarath Amunugama: Minister of Foreign Affairs

Yeah yeah, I know. There is a change and an explanation is necessary. I am typing in a hurry.
To explain briefly, THE AFTERMATH of Mahinda’s swearing in, is NOT TO my liking.
Yes I actually wanted to rest my pen when MR sworn in as the PM (which was long overdue) as I believed that everything would be fine.
Then I had to stay back because they PROROGUED THE PARLIAMENT which is undemocratic.
I expected to see after swearing in MR going to Parliament and making his official speech. It didn’t happen. Instead they prorogued the Parliament which is the highest organ which stands for democratic legitimacy of any country.
Then I heard about the horsetrading.
One thing I should make clear is, I am not ONLY FOR MAHINDA.
I have given my independent opinion on various matters that are pertinent to my country and raised my voice to protect our national assets. Moreover, I fought for the rights of various people irrespective of party or colour.
There is no need to raise my voice for Mahinda as he is in the Government now.
But I can see that there could be various injustices for other people. Civil and political rights of ALL PEOPLE should be protected no matter which party they are in.
If THIS Government is also engaged in wrongdoing (I saw something on page 2), I should raise my voice. It doesn’t matter who does it. What is wrong is wrong.
Mahinda and JO joined Maithri. If they expect people will also change sides THAT EASILY, they are mistaken.
I am NOT one for political coups or underhand games.
I have my principles. I cannot alter them according to the situation.
I stand by what I said. The next President is NOT A RAJAPAKSA.

Out of 17 minister posts 4 has gone to UNP defectors. Thy need at least fifteen to defect. The maximum ministers they can go now are 45. It sounds like, in this rate, marginally they may win the donkey trading game. Needed donkeys can be haggled from UNP to topple UNP. But so far these are the four names from day one I have been seeing the media as planning to defect. These fours are given jobs in the first batch as the carrots for the rest. But dissented UPFA MPs alone is 15. Joint Comedies are there and additional Old SLFPyers about 25 who were with UNP up to the last minutes are also there. What about other Muslim parties, Karuna, Angayan….. (Karuna yet to be listed as any minister but he has already declared his war on Eastern Muslims as “There won’t be any more Muslim Imperialism in the East”.) Would this means Joint Comedies who are going to be left behind have to seek Ranil’s mercy to be listed in Ranil’s cabinet?
