The Pope will meet a new President under a new government after the elections says Disanayaka Mudiyanselage Jayaratne,the 20th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, and a veteran Sri Lankan politician. He also a founder member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday signed the proclamation declaring his intention to hold a Presidential Election seeking another term. After a few hours later a ruling party Gampaha District parliamentarian Vasantha Senanayake joined the United National Party and said he joined the UNP because of the issues of democracy and other issues under Rajapaksa regime and added that there will be more UPFA members in the UNP in future.

Interesting observation.
Upon cancelling the election results, defense forces who valiantly defended the sovereignty of the nation has asked Gota to be the next President. Gota has obliged in a caretaker role, to save the nation from uncertainty, until fresh elections are held at a future date.
Pope Francis will have to do with Gota, if he comes at all.
Then Gota told the church folks, the President will be hurt if Pope doesn’t come. Poor Pope Francis, pushed around by a family from Srilanka.
The new Presidents first visit in his capacity, will be to our friend in need China. He will meet President Xi Jinping to sign a defense agreement that will allow China’s Defense forces to setup bases in the South of Srilanka.

A few weeks ago, Maithreepala said “I am not sure if I will be here next year”. I sounded odd then, but makes sense now.
Obviously things were brewing for a while. The SLFP old guard is not happy.
The disadvantage of the Presidential system is the disconnect between the Parliament and the President. The Prez does not seem to be in tune even with his own front bench.
Wide ranging reforms are needed whoever takes the next turn.
