Prof S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole
Today, 1 March 2026, is the second Sunday in Lent and and the reading is from Genesis Chapter 12:
12Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2, And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3′ And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
So it was that many of us Tamils left Sri Lanka with its standardisation blocking siblings from university, and innumerable riots and compensations only when the Sinhalese were the targets of state and racist violence. We were no longer subject to the tyranny of clergy or of Sinhalese racists. We were free!
We did well in the promised land. Monarchical power was limited (Deuteronomy 17:14-20). The rule of law was firm and subject to judicial review. We helped our kith and kin whom we left behind. We benefitted from the biblical promises – political asylum, education, free travel, respectable passport, state aid, housing (Isaiah 32.18, Deuteronomy 6: 10-11 and interest-free loans for orphans, the widows, et. al
A sea change was when the charlatan, racist and thief Donald J. Trump was able to get all the racists and crooks behind him and vote for him and surround himself with a talented support base that uses him to sustain Trump in power and make money for themselves at the same time.
We who moved to thempromised land are lost as we need to go out with passports and our children are grabbed from our bedrooms in the middle of the night by masked ICE agnets even if we are legitimately in the US.
It appears that this sea change was initiated by US Presidents seeking a diversion from the sexual and financial imbroglio they found themselves in:
1. President Bill Clinton caught in his affairs with Monica Lewinski: President Clinton ordered military airstrikes against Iraq, known as Operation Desert Fox, in December 1998 to divert attention from the Monica Lewinsky scandal and impending impeachment. The four-day bombing campaign began on December 16, 1998, just one day before the House of Representatives was scheduled to vote on his impeachment. Clinton survived the vote!
2. President George Bush (the son) had his administration facing the Iraq Invasion (2003): The invasion of Iraq is often cited as a diversionary action, diverting resources and attention from the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan. Controversies: The administration was facing scrutiny over the justification for the war, with allegations of faulty intelligence regarding Iraq’s possession of WMDs. Political Distraction: By focusing on a new, high-profile military campaign, the administration sought to distract from other issues, such as the debate over the administration’s actions prior to the 9/11 attacks and questions about its management of the post-9/11 world. The decision to initiate the Iraq war was a significant, albeit controversial, event in the Bush presidency, which some believed served to mask other, more pressing issues.
3. Joe Biden’s hasty (some say botched) exit from Afghanistan and halt Houthi rebel attacks on Red Sea commercial shipping. These are depicted as diversionary tactics to refocus from his son Hunter Biden’s antics in questionable financial, influence peddling dealings in Ukraine and Romania, leading to a scandalous pardon from father to son, It was a blot on the otherwise scandal-free Biden Presidency’s escutcheon.
4. The dethroning of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is attributed to the need for diversion as the cry for the obviously covered-up Jeffrey Epstein files became ever more strident as the bipartisan law demanded their release, a law that remains ignored. Trump blames the need to make oil cheaper although this is denied by sources much more honest that he is, sources connected to the oil industry.
5. A new urgency for yet another diversion was when the State of the Union address was due last Tuesday and all poll numbers suggested that Trump’s approval was abysmally down. The war on Iran also is a cover-up flowing from that scandalous narrative as made obvious on Feb. 28, 2026 when the United Nations chief condemned the U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran on Saturday and called for an immediate return to negotiations “to pull the region, and our world, back from the brink.” He told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council that everything must be done to prevent further escalation. “The alternative,” he warned, “is a potential wider conflict with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability.”
But there is hope. More than 400 Christian leaders and scholars have denounced President Donald Trump’s administration, having urged for more resistance among the faithful to injustices by democratic Lankan origin Sri Lankan activists in America for prayers for Iran although their prayer focus needs to shift towards who are prey to Israeli and US bombs as well, not just to targets of Islamist oppression.
The UN chief condemns U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran during an emergency Security Council meeting. Guterres said the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes violated international law, including the U.N. Charter. He also condemned Iran’s retaliatory attacks for violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Russia’s ambassador condemned the U.S.-Israeli airstrikes: “We demand that the United States and Israel immediately cease their aggressive actions,” Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said. “We insist on the immediate resumption of political and diplomatic settlement efforts … based on international law, mutual respect and a balance of interests.”
China’s U.N. Ambassador Fu Cong said China was very concerned by “the sudden escalation of regional tensions” and supported Russia’s call for a return to diplomatic negotiations. Five council members — Bahrain, which is the Arab representative on the council, France, Russia, China and Colombia — called for the emergency meeting.
In a joint statement, the leaders of Britain and France — both veto-wielding members of the council — along with Germany’s chancellor called for a resumption of U.S.-Iranian talks on Tehran’s nuclear program. The three countries, part of the 2015 nuclear deal
Security forces have arrested tens of thousands of men, women, and even children, often without due process.
Secretary-General António Guterres told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council that everything must be done to prevent further escalation. “The alternative,” he warned, “is a potential wider conflict with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability.”
Racism is a funny thing. We all like to think we are free of it but are rarely do, The racsts in Sri Lanka as are easily identfied. In the US many recists are sophisticated and their upbringing has helped them to comouflage that. Through a veneer of sophistication as made clear by how Trump grabs women by their private parts and boasts of it (but it comes out when his speech uninitentionally goes on air.
Donald Trump is an out-and out racist and a cad as shown by The [British] Guardian and the BBC. Throughout his business career and political campaigns, Donald Trump has made numerous statements that critics, opponents, and various advocacy groups have condemned as racist, bigoted, or xenophobic. Trump has denied these allegations, often describing himself as “the least racist person” (belied by the BBC and Guardian).
His other key Statements and Incidents criticized as racist. are
1. Immigration and “Shithole” Countries (2018): During an Oval Office meeting on immigration, Trump reportedly referred to Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations as “shithole countries” questioning why the U.S. should accept immigrants from them rather than places like Norway.
2. “Go Back” Comments (2019): Trump tweeted that four Democratic congresswomen of color (Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib) should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came”.
3. Mexican Immigrants (2015): Launching his 2016 campaign, Trump said of Mexico: “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists”.
4. Judge Gonzalo Curiel (2016): Trump argued that U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel had “an absolute conflict” in presiding over the Trump University lawsuit because of his “Mexican heritage” and Trump’s plan to build a wall.
5. Charlottesville “Both Sides” (2017): Following a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Charlottesville “Both Sides” (2017): Following a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that turned violent, Trump stated there were “very fine people on both sides”.
6. COVID-19 Rhetoric (2020): Trump repeatedly referred to COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus” and “kung flu”.
7. “Animals” Remark (2018): When discussing immigrants crossing the border, Trump said”These aren’t people. These are animals”.
8. “White Power” Video (2020): Trump retweeted a video of a supporter chanting “white power” which was later deleted.
9. Central Park Five (1989/2019): Trump took out full-page ads advocating for the death penalty for five Black and Latino teenagers accused of rape. After they were exonerated by DNA evidence, he continued to argue as late as 2019 that they were guilty.
10. “Blood” of the Nation (2024): Trump stated that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” a comment that drew criticism for echoing eugenics, as reported by Scientific American.
11. Housing Discrimination (1970s): The U.S. Department of Justice sued Trump’s real estate company for violating the Fair Housing Act by refusing to rent to Black tenants.
12. Casino Employees (1980s/90s): Former employees alleged that when Trump visited his casinos, managers would remove Black employees from the floor.
13. Madison Square Garden Rally (2024): Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, speaking at a Trump rally, referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” and made other jokes that were widely condemned as racist.
14. Truth Social Video (2026): Trump shared a video on his Truth Social account that featured a racist clip depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as monkeys. Trump later claimed he had not watched the entire video before it was posted.
15. COVID-19 Rhetoric (2020): Trump repeatedly referred to COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus” and “kung flu”.
16. When discussing immigrants crossing the border, Trump said, “These aren’t people. These are animals”.”White Power” Video (2020): Trump retweeted a video of a supporter chanting “white power” which was later deleted.
The war on Iran is utterly illegal. It received no prior authorisation from Congress as constitutionally required. Yet, the U.S Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, insisted the U.S. military action was lawful.
A war powers resolution to pull back intervention in Venezuela earlier this year initially got enough Republican support to advance in the Senate, but enough ultimately changed their mind and the measure failed.
Everyone knows that a resolution of the war against Iran will also fail. However evil a war, there is a streak of nationalism in American politics that will support that evil. We will have to wait or 3 more years for a new Congress. Or will be like the 52% of the vote that Gotabaya scored from the racists of Sri Lanka in 2019. Trump has almost that in Congress if one adds the Republican vote and the nationalistic Democrat vote. We cannot rest!

It seems that the Kuwaitis have shot down more US warplanes than Iran. What next? Will Trump attack Kuwait? If not, why these double standards?

OC,

I have gone to college with some US-Forces veterans …. they get a lot of benefits for an education ……. once they have served.
–
I’m not surprised ……. the biggest casualties in the Iraq war was from ‘Friendly Fire’! …….. Not from Saddam’s soldiers: they turned around and ran.
–
–
Joining the Army/Forces is a last resort for many poor kids who can’t find employment ….. and unfortunately they are not the smartest or the ones who have had a good education from the get go.
–
–
You know with her vocabulary how Ramona talked herself out of joining the Army …… Like all the presidents since Bill Clinton.
–
Ramona is the only weapon Iran needed ……. She would’ve obliterated US-Forces singlehandedly with ‘Friendly Fire’ and Verbal-fire …… America should be praising Allah …… not cursing him …… for the narrow escape.
–
America is a nation of talking-heads …….. mostly empty heads. ……. But they have a deadly arsenal …………

I saw ten-thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children

Nimal,
“and unfortunately they are not the smartest or the ones who have had a good education from the get go.”
True, even over here. But I can’t understand why our Ranaviruwos are believed to be capable of anything from making number-plates to running electricity grids and refineries.

Hello Nimal,
Religion is not constitutionally part of the US Government, even though they use “In God we Trust”. Not quite as bad as Peter the Hermit’s “Deus Vult” (God wills it). Have we not learned anything in the nearly 1000 years since the First Crusade?
The US has many Christian Zionists that will support this Iran War
Did anyone find out what happened to DTG?

Jaffna Man!
In Nov last year, u posted a long, rambling (at times, garbled) article, in which you first demolished Paranavitana, casting him as a “poisoned tree”. And then proceeded to describe my husband as a “fruit of the poisoned tree”.
—
And as justification for your assault on him you cite a source which doesnt exist. In yr words:
—
“In a cheap The Sunday Times article (Jan. 27, 2023) where Prof. Bandaranayake was the main person interviewed, he talks of the Moonstone steps…”
—
I have searched for it on line — 27/1/23 ws a FRIDAY! Moreover, the ST editor says such an article cannot be found.
And despite several requests for u to give me the correct source, you have refused to do so up till now.
—
You say “Learn not to trust Wikipedia”.
I reply: Learn not to trust this particular Jaffna Man!

Wikipedia is not always a reliable source.
It has its system bias as well as the biases of those who supply the information.
I will trust it very much in matters of science technology etc where subjective views are unimportant. History, with reservations. Politics with more reservations.

“The Story of Civilization” —– Will & Ariel Duran ……… A hunter-gatherer who was more intelligent than the rest invented God ……. he sold the story it’s an angry god in the sky that was unleashing his wrath through thunder and lightning …… to pacify the angry god the rest have to give him the best pick of their hunter-gatherings to stay behind and pacify/pray to god …… beg for his mercy ….. get the drift?

Hello Nimal,
I haven’t seen the Lascaux Cave Paintings, but I did see them in Books when I was about 7 years old. Maybe your Ancestor painted these 20,000 Years ago?

Gilgamesh was a more recent story that predated the Bible. I can read most of the Brahmi Scripts, but I don’t understand the language except for a few words. One of my Philippine friends showed me Baybayan Script which I recognised as a derivation of Brahmi.

We were no longer subject to the tyranny of clergy or of Sinhalese racists. We were free!”
According to a Wikipedia article on Hoole, he left Sri Lanka because, after he had been appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Jaffna by President MR, the LTTE threatened him with death if took up the position. He didn’t assume duties and, as the threats continued, he and his family left Sri Lanka on 20 April 2006.
He returned in 2010 (after the war ended) and fled the country again in 2011 because the Kayts magistrate court had issued a warrant for his arrest for contempt of court as he had failed to attend in person a court hearing in August of that year fearing being remanded.
I invite the readers to compare what the author states and the facts I have reproduced from a Wikipedia article (which gives supporting references) and reach their own conclusions about the credibility of this person.

Left immediately after graduation and returned in the late 1990s and had to flee twice more.
As for the wiki, it refuses to say my brother Rajan is an electrical engineer (Peradenya 1971 I think) and wants proof. I cannot be bothered with such puny minds after trying twice.

Jaffan Man: “Left immediately after graduation and returned in the late 1990s and had to flee twice more.”
You left after graduation (1975) for further studies and until you returned to Sri Lanka in the 90s you worked abroad for economic reasons.
Since you have now not denied that the words “many of us Tamils” include yourself, do you still not admit that your statements that I reproduced in my first post and reproduce below amount to a misrepresentation since you PERSONALLY did not have to leave Sri Lanka for any of these reasons (racism, discrimination)?
Quote
“[M]any of us Tamils left Sri Lanka with its standardisation blocking siblings from university, and innumerable riots and compensations only when the Sinhalese were the targets of state and racist violence. We were no longer subject to the tyranny of clergy or of Sinhalese racists. We were free!

As explained in my second post, even if the words do not include yourself, your statements still amount to a mispresentation of the facts as these are not the sole reasons why many Tamils have migrated abroad over the past many decades.

By so saying, you have confirmed the accuracy of the Wikipedia statements as regards yourself.
At this stage I have to question your intelligence if you are sincere.
For the benefit of those who may not have understood my previous comments properly I have restated my point in a new comment below, to which your response is invited.

On looking at what the author has written again, it appears that he may be using the expression “many of us” to refer to some members of the Tamil community, not necessarily including himself personally. If so, there is no contradiction between that and what I reproduced from the Wikipedia.
However, he and many others fled the country during the war because of the LTTE–either because of threats of death as in his case or to avoid conscription. Some youth moved to the “racist” South for the latter reason. I personally knew of one Tamil guy who worked at the same company as me during the war and told me that he had fled the North, where he had resided, because of the Sri Lankan forces, but I learnt from another colleague that the real reason was to avoid conscription by the LTTE. Many–probably the preponderant majority-were undoubtably economic refugees making bogus asylum claims.
Some reference to the above facts would have provided balance to what the author stated at the beginning.
/
Leonard Jayawardena / March 4, 2026
This comment is for those who have not understood my earlier comments.
According to Wikipedia, the author graduated from a university in the South, went abroad for further studies and worked there many years (for economic reasons), returned to Sri Lanka in 1999 to work as a professor at the University of Ruhuna, joined the University of Peradeniya as a professor in the same year, becoming a senior professor in 2003. He served as a departmental head in the university. Was a member of the University Grants Commission and the Election Commission.
In 2006 President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed him as vice-chancellor of the University of Jaffna but, on being threatened with death by the LTTE if he took up the position, he fled the country. Returned after the war had ended (2010).
Therefore I ask, How fair is it for such a person to begin an article thus: “[M]any of us Tamils left Sri Lanka with its standardisation blocking siblings from university, and innumerable riots and compensations only when the Sinhalese were the targets of state and racist violence. We were no longer subject to the tyranny of clergy or of Sinhalese racists. We were free!”?
What an ingrate!

It seems Americans are unable to learn from mistakes of the past. They lied about Saddam Hussein having WMD’s (pretending to believe the testimony of BB the notorious liar) and illegally went into Iraq, bombing the country to rubble, toppling the man who they once supported against Iran, seized the oil, killed, maimed, and displace hundreds of thousands, and got bogged down in a quagmire.
Trump and BB are well known for lying to the world, and should never be believed, especially when justifying a war.
We hear the lies, the accusations of existential and imminent threats, and that this “Noble” war as their leader called it, is yet another WAR OF CHOICE and based on false intelligence. Iran has never attacked its neighbors unprovoked, has never killed thousands of civilians in the region, and was in the middle of negotiations when the US reneged and with the urging of the zionists started bombing a sovereign nation.
If any nation deserves to be attacked and stopped perhaps those who are attacking and bombing the most nations and killing the most number of civilians should be high on the list.

“It seems Americans are unable to learn from mistakes of the past”
This is not the first time that the US has attacked a weaker nation with overwhelming force. Back in 1972, it dropped 20,000 tons of bombs on Hanoi. That didn’t work, and the US ran away after suffering 50,000 dead. Nowadays the cowards are careful to avoid casualties.

Of Tamils who left SL, you can argue for ever if it was due to the SL army or Tiger recruitment. But why did Sinhalese leave SL in large numbers — there was a recent claim circulated on social media that 80% of recent science graduates have left or in the process of leaving and that we should charge them $15000 for exit? Ever wondered why they are not staying to celebrate the 2500 year-old cultural heritage and making SL great again?
Something is fundamentally flawed, and we do not have the intellectual courage to seek the underlying truth. On this and elsewhere, were we to reflect on what is common across communities rather than what is different, there is a better chance of finding, and correcting, our ways.

Singar A. Velan: “Of Tamils who left SL, you can argue for ever if it was due to the SL army or Tiger recruitment. But why did Sinhalese leave SL in large numbers….”
Please read a comment carefully before you reply to it.
In his article Hoole says,
“[M]any of us Tamils left Sri Lanka with its standardisation blocking siblings from university, and innumerable riots and compensations only when the Sinhalese were the targets of state and racist violence. We were no longer subject to the tyranny of clergy or of Sinhalese racists. We were free!”
I pointed out that HIS reasons for fleeing the country (twice) were different. (He had earlier studied and worked abroad after graduation but this was not because of any racism or discrimination.) Also, many Tamils fled the North and the East to avoid conscription during the war, some of whom migrated abroad, and others have done so for economic reasons. Therefore the author’s statements I reproduced above amount to a misrepresentation of the facts.
Do you understand now?

The universities lost a good number of academics after 1977 and 1983. Some returned though.
Many Sinhalese academics left in 1988-89, hardly any returned.
The number of Sinhalese academics with dual nationality is surprisingly high. Tamils had mostly lost interest in returning I suspect. Property at home could have been a driving factor in obtaining dual nationality. But the way applications were treated in the war years and after discouraged several potential applicants.
*
Patriotic reasons for one’s return especially as a dual citizen are laughable.
