An indefinite travel ban has been imposed on foreign passport holders including tourists, restricting their access to the Northern province concurrent to a visit by President Rajapaksa in the area.
According to northern sources foreign passport holders had been turned back from Omanthai, where the Army controls an entry point to the Northern province.
Military officials have stated the travel ban was imposed in the ‘national interest’ and among those who had been inconvenienced by the travel restrictions had been those of Sri Lankan origin who were attending weddings, funerals and religious rituals in Jaffna.
Even those who have been granted official permission to visit the area including diplomats and foreign nationals engaged in development projects in the North had not been allowed to proceed from Omanthai onwards.
President Rajapaksa is in Jaffna on a three-day visit for the reopening of a railway line to Jaffna. He is also due to award over 20,000 land permits to families in the area during an event today. This underhand motive of this visit seems to be to prep-up the area and boost Rajapaksa’s image among the residents of the province before the upcoming Presdential election.

Without settling Sinhalese and Muslims in Jaffna it is a FOOLISH decision to restart YARL DEVI without changing the journey.
The journey from Jaffna to Colombo must be broken in Anuradhapura. People should get down and get into another train.
Otherwise Tamils from the north will OCCUPY all seats as they occupy land, etc. without allowing anything to others. This means Sinhalese will have to sit on the floor.
If the train STOPS in Anuradhapura and a new train starts from there, non Tamils have some chance to sit and travel with dignity.
Mark my word, the RACIST MENTALITY of northern Tamils will lead to FIGHTS, DISGUST, etc. in this train. This has happened in 1970s and 1980s and will happen again.

It is claimed the objectives for the ban was to boost the image of the Rajapakse’s. But it is doing exactly the opposite, i.e. portraying them as a bunch of paranoia driven cowards, able to spin a yarn to win votes and nothing else. On the economy, our debt is so huge, it will take generations to pay them back. It would be bearable if the debt was incurred to create jobs or build factories but no, they were all spent on prestige projects and on the infrastructure whose demands did not justify the expenditure. They might have considered an expressway all the way up to Jaffna, fortunately never materialised as events show foreignesr are banned from going there anyway.

to enter the N/E without a permit from the Ministry of Defence, that too during peace time, as the govt.itself claims so. The seniors in the West, Canada & US, reserve a little money, monthly from their pensions for this trip,once a year in winter to Colombo to see their kith and kin in N/E and do the Govt. expect these old people to line up for permits,giving details of their pedigree and wasting a day.Do not understand why the govt is worsening their position with UN and the West as this decision,if true, will tantamount to breach of privileges,addition fuel to the fire and international human rights watch organizations & countries will view this as a ploy to hide facts,happening in N/E. report is true, the loser will be the Lankan Govt as this time, under the current circumstances, Tamils will not go to places where permits are issued or travel to North with a permit, fearing arbitrary arrests
or harassments on some grounds as the Tamil diaspora, overseas is under scrutiny .
An average traveller to the North spends around $200,000/- rupees,
minimum per trip and this in addition to air fares and transport to their home towns and back and much more in the event of weddings and other festivities. Most Tamils use Sri Lankan airlines, from Europe, Canada & USA who form around 50% of the ethnic traffic. What will happen now is that they will get down their kith and kin to Trichi, Trivandram or Chennai(low fares), have a good time and send them back. India has relaxed the visa rules for most foreigners and they get it on line.
What would anybody suggest will be to add the additional questions to the existing application form for visa so that they can move freely in SL.Little expenses will add up to colossus amount of foreign funds,
which the govt is bound to lose at India’s gain. the Authorities should take serious note of this and work on one application form for the visa to Colombo and the permit to the North and continue the process of issuing it on line.
With modern technologies, the intelligence people can over come this problem of facing the travellers, personally
