Rajapaksas Are Comfortable With Me – Rajpal Abeynayake

Editor of the state owned Daily News Rajpal Abeynayake has described himself as Sri Lanka’s Rush Limbaugh in an interview with the New York Times newspaper which calls him a gushing admirer of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

In an article entitled ‘A Sri Lankan Journalist Eagerly Toes the Line’ the New York Times profiles the Daily News Editor as the most influential English language journalist in the country.

Rajpal

“I think, if I may say so, that they’re comfortable with me,” Abeynayake told the New York Times, referring to the governing Rajapaksa clan.

“Mr. Abeynayake is unapologetic about violating what many see as a basic norm of journalism: giving both sides of a story,” the newspaper says.

“We have a media that is far freer than that in the U.S., U.K. or the rest of the Western world,” the newspaper quotes Abeynayake as saying in one of the many black-is-white statements he made in an hourlong interview. “Take the invasion of Iraq. Can you tell me whether the U.S. media was against it, including your newspaper?”

The reason Sri Lanka needs state-owned and state-dominated news media, he said, is that otherwise the government’s views would be ignored.

“A coterie of privately owned media could bring down the government by manipulating the news,” he said, “and that doesn’t do justice to those who elected them.”

The newspaper says Abeynayake cites Noam Chomsky and the government shutdown in the United States to defend Sri Lanka’s press restrictions.

“You cannot allow the freedom of the wild ass,” he said, referring to the animal. “And if media are manipulated to serve as the instrument of others’ agendas — like imperialists or multinational corporations — you need to counter that,” the Daily News Editor told the newspaper.

Abeynayake also dismissed the international estimates of the war casualties, and he said many of the journalists killed were spies for the Tamil Tigers.

“These were terrorists using journalism as a cover,” he said. “Terrorists get killed by governments, and, yes, that’s O.K.”

His first stint as the editor of a government-owned newspaper, The Sunday Observer, ended in 2005 after just eight months when he wrote an editorial mildly disagreeing with President Rajapaksa, the report says.

“At the time, I wasn’t sure how they’d turn out,” Mr. Abeynayake said of the Rajapaksa government. “I was skeptical that these people could deliver. I wasn’t very comfortable with them in 2005. Now, I’m very comfortable.”

Mr. Abeynayake noted that no Sri Lankan journalist had been killed since 2009, and he said that those who had fled the country were either working as agents of those countries or were looking for free tickets out.

“They are economic migrants,” he said, “just like these people who get on boats to Australia.”

Abeynayake told the New York Times that he and others at government-owned publications were no more constrained in their work than those at privately owned newspapers.

“All journalists to a very great extent are forced to toe a certain line,” he said. “In the end, you gravitate to a place where the management views are in consonance with yours. And I have gravitated to that place.”

What a pathetic travesty of journalism in the NYT. Hey you there Ed-in-Chief of the NYT… not heard of the golden rules ? the who, what, when, where etc. Cat got your reporter’s tongue at this so-called interview ? or did you go laughing all the way to the bank glad to do the Lankan government’s dirty work by agreeing to tone down your coverage of the Colombo CHOGM. Eh ?
Was that the deal that Raj came all the way over there to arrange?
Going to go easy on that coverage, are you? no accountability issues, no war crimes references, no page one space for anything controversial raised in Colombo by the Canadians and any others such as Cameron and the Prince, eh ? Else, how come he’s called ” the most influential English language journalist in the country “. What’s your criteria for coming to that conclusion.

Quote : “I think, if I may say so, that they’re comfortable with me,” Abeynayake told the New York Times, referring to the governing Rajapaksa clan.

“Mr. Abeynayake is unapologetic about violating what many see as a basic norm of journalism: giving both sides of a story”. And what’s your take on that ? rate him as the most influential ? So why the dickens did you not ask him why he admits to being such a godawful jerk instead of being a journalist, especially since he’s Editor [ THE MOST INFLUENTIAL EDITOR} and not some insignificant cub reporter ‘ Looks to me that the NYT’s got some equally godawful interviewers on its staff.
Even a British rag has higher standards of journalism than yours though you seem to have stooped down to the same level of ethics that they subscribe to. What a bloody shame !

Journalism is all about the readers’ right to know. So why the heck did you not ask him why he does not subscribe to basic ethics and tenets of journalism and give both sides of a story. The NYT might be in some awful financial bind or something to pay high salaries for the NYT’s brand of journalism.

Trust the Lankan leaders to get the right man for these sudden media jobs. Taken leave of your senses, have you ?
” gushing admirer of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa.’

Ye gods, you sound like a teen porn magazine writer.
Read the Lankan newspapers to see how every single one of them pours scorn on those for whom he has this gushing admiration. Pray tell us what he was gushing about.. and beware that you don’t put your foot in your mouth in the process.

“I think, if I may say so, that they’re comfortable with me,” Abeynayake told the New York Times, referring to the governing Rajapaksa clan.

Why do I get this feeling that come November and the CHOGM, ” THE CLAN” [A GOOD ONE THAT, “THE CLAN’ VERY APT, LIKE HOW OTHER MAFIOSI ARE REFERRED TO]IS GOING TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH THE NYT ALSO ?

“We have a media that is far freer than that in the U.S., U.K. or the rest of the Western world”

YE GODS, WHEN DID THE US, UK AND THIS ‘WESTERN WORLD’ SEND ARMY DESERTERS TO PUMP BULLETS INTO JOURNALISTS OF THIS “FAR FREER” MEDIA, SEND WHITE VANS TO ENSURE THEIR FORCED DISAPPEARANCES [ OR DID THEY GO UP IN THE RAPTURE ?]Torch website offices and equipment. Send ministers to lead thugs to smash up TV studios ?

“The reason Sri Lanka needs state-owned and state-dominated news media, he said, is that otherwise the government’s views would be ignored”
TO ME, THAT IS A SHAMELESS ADMISSION OF MERELY BEING A KEPT PROPAGANDIST OF THE STATE. AND ISN’T THAT AS FAR AS ONE CAN GET FROM THE PROFESSION OF JOURNALISM?.

That’s similar to KFC claiming its in the profession of journalism because their infomercials appear in the newspapers and their advertising manager calls himself the Editor.
      Laugh.laugh.laugh.

And the NYT lends itself to be a party to this bilgy effluent coming from the rear end of a kept, so-called editor.

“A coterie of privately owned media could bring down the government by manipulating the news,” he said, “and that doesn’t do justice to those who elected them.”

So what is this plethora of pro-government spin we see on websites and the kept press and electronic media ? What’ all that drivel ? not manipulation of hundreds of thousands of ignorant and impressionable village folk ? And you want the responsible media to permit this mass scale deception ? Is that why you call him the “most influential” ?

You call that journalism? It’s called mass deception through application of the Goebbelsian doctrine. And you’re guilty of traducing every precept of journalism because you’ve acknowledged that you DON’T GIVE BOTH [LET ALONE ALL SIDES] sides of a story. That’s a basic facet of a functioning democracy. His brand of servile propaganda simply fails the test to be classified as true journalism. How the devil can he then be the most influential journalist in the English language in Sri Lanka?

Is it State ordered spin that “does justice to those who elected them? Or the whole truth ?

Where does intellectual treachery begin ? is it not right there when a journalist prostitutes ethics and principles for a couple of bucks ?
So I therefore ask this : With what objective did the NYT become a partner to this crap ?

      What’s the story?.

      What’s the shit ?

Since when did the Editor-in-Chief of the NYT start feeding his readers drivel while independent journalists are killed in pursuance of the truth ? How about some regular space for them in the NYT?.

Are they stooges of foreign bodies conniving with them to impose selfish agendas In Sri Lanka or are they in fact not circumventing the curse of self-censorship to use those foreign bodies to publish the truth abroad where tangible results can be achieved?.
That make it evident as to who the stooge is and who the lackey is.
I can go on ad infinitum because in my mind’s eye are the sights of colleagues brutally put to death, fellow journalists kidnapped and never seen again, fellow journalists dragged out of their vehicles and bludgeoned with iron rods, still others having their homes broken into and held at knife point., others shot but mercifully saved by prompt medical intervention, others threatened with death via abusive phone calls… the list goes on. I can see the blood, the fatherless children, the widows left behind. I can smell the depth of fear on every page of most every newspaper whose editors are compelled to resort to self-censorship in deference to pleadings from wives and children.

This is the media architecture that Abeynayake shamelessly defends. The culture he defends.

It is perhaps, from one point of view, good that you did give coverage for this muck. At least it’s helped put into words what the whole nation knew. But that hardly takes the bad taste away from the mouths of men and women of integrity. Do be discriminate about those you shake hands with. You might find them tainted with the blood of our fellow journalists..
It would be horrendous when the day arrives on which such blood is used instead of oil. And we know that oil is not just used for frying but to make things slip easily from one hand to another. I suppose worse things have been known to have happened.

Since, as editor of the NYT I take it that you profess to be the complete journalist, in fairness and in the best interests of journalism and the readers’ right to know, would you please copy this and run it in your next issue by way of acknowledging my right of reply ?
I trust the CT can send this over to the NYT?
Rajpal raised the issue of the Iraq war, asking why the USs papers did not question it/criticize it…
Colin Powell had this to say in response to a similar question thrown his way :
“Europe was freed by employing hard power.. And what followed immediately after hard power? Did the United
States ask for dominion over a single nation in Europe? No. Soft power came in the Marshall Plan. Soft power came with American GIs who put
their weapons down once the war was over and helped all those nations rebuild. We did the same thing in Japan. So our record of living our values and letting our values be an inspiration to others I think is clear. And I don’t think I have anything to be ashamed of or apologize for with respect to what America has done for the world. We have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years and we’ve done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own, you know, to seek our own lives in peace, to live our own lives in peace. But there comes a time when soft power or talking with evil will not work where, unfortunately, hard power is the only thing that works
Would anyone dare say that Saddam, after he had demonstrably proved how deep the evil in him was by wiping off Kurds with mustard gas, was a man who could be trusted with chemical weapons or nuclear weapons ? What’s happening in Syria ? So, even the invasion of Iraq was not enough to serve as a deterrent to these psychopathic killers of their own people. , Saddam blocked any UN inspection of Iraq for WMD stocks for over three years. Did he kill time until he transferred incriminating evidence to an outside source and did part of that stockpile reach Syria? Yes. That’s conjecture. , But, is Rajpal trying to suggest that had that invasion been a crime it automatically exonerates any similar crimes in Sri Lanka ? Why doesn’t the NYT do a fair question and answer interview instead of this messy hodgepodge that would not make it past the editor of a Sri Lankan village school magazine.
The NYT manner of dealing with this interview that is more a monologue made to look like an interview reveals just how incredibly insensitive you can be to the deaths, bludgeoning and disappearances of free thinking, socially responsible journalists. Those who are in exile are NOT ECONOMIC REFUGEES. THAT’S A DIABOLIC LIE ONLY CAPABLE OF ISSUInG FROM THE MOUTH OF A MEMBER OF “THE CLAN” IN WHOSE COMPANY HE HAS FOUND HIS COMFORT ZONE. PATHETIC REALLY, FOR A YOUNG MAN WHO HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE WORTHY OF EXALTED COMPANY.
BUT THE TRUTH WILL ULTIMATELY OUT, AS IT ALWAYS UNERRINGLY DOES.
Incidentally, Abeynayaka is not in the least influential in his journalism. HE IS A BOUGHT AND KEPT PROPAGANDIST. He is no doubt the most INFLUENCED.

Thankfully, for every lackey in the corridors of journalism there are ten men and women of absolute professional and moral integrity.

The original NYT article had this:

Mr. Abeynayake dismissed the international estimates of the war casualties, and he said many of the journalists killed were spies for the Tamil Tigers.

“These were terrorists using journalism as a cover,” he said. “Terrorists get killed by governments, and, yes, that’s O.K.”

Interesting. So, if someone calls Mr. Abeynayake a terrorist for siding with and promoting a murderous regime, that will entitle some others to kill Mr. Abeynayake as well.

Can’t believe that this guy was a drinking buddy of the late Taraki Sivaram. He justifies Sivaram’s murder. That is some friend.

Well, all ye angry people who think that private ownership of media is the way to go.

Just take a moment to reflect.

Have you heard of a man called Murdoch. Well he is the owner of the worlds biggest media empire. He has made and broken governments. He is unashamedly pro Jewish interests. Do you think all the journalists working for him are independent. Do you think his editors act with integrity. Then you are all ill informed.

Didn’t you all believe in WMDs in Iraq. Well it was Murdoch’s private media empire who gave the truth to that deplorable lie. And it was his journalists and editors who wrote all those reams of lies day in day out.

So please, pipe down on your ire, on the hapless Rajpal.

Private media can be as biased as they want because they aren’t using public money, but government media must be as unbiased as possible because they are using public funds.

Look at National Public Radio and Public Broadcasting in the US or the BBC in the UK; both known for high standards and decent news coverage relative to the private media in those countries.

“Have you heard of a man called Murdoch.”

Have you heard of a news paper called Guardian, well it is not owned by any crazy dirty diggers, but by a non profit making trust hence the journalists are not answerable to any blood sucking leaches nor are they controlled by ruling parties.

Those who work for the Guardian fearlessly challenged their own state as well the mighty USA by disclosing Snowdown files.

Guardian which was founded in 1821 had this to declare “that it would ‘zealously enforce the principles of civil and religious Liberty… warmly advocate the cause of Reform… endeavour to assist in the diffusion of just principles of Political Economy and… support, without reference to the party from which they emanate, all serviceable measures’.”

CP Scott’s celebrated essay which was published to mark the paper’s centenary on May 5, 1921 contains the principles of the Guardian.

      Native Vedda,

The Guardian serves a different type of clientèle – a small coterie of gentrified socialites. Such a small number of people do not hold the balance of power. It is Murdoch who owns public opinion in almost all the western countries including Australia. His support is essential if a party is to win an election.

The Daily News serves the Sri Lankans. We Sri Lankans are different and most of us are quite comfortable with the public media status quo.

      • 0
        0

Not true. In the US his FOX news is famously derided as Faux News. He only holds influence with the right wing , which is by no means the majority of the nation.

        • 0
          0

A handful will deride. But the majority are sucked in by Murdoch. There are layers upon layers of sub wings within the right and left side of politics.

Furthermore most in the US are right wing when it comes to economic and foreign policies but choose to be left wing with social reforms and US internal labour rights. Murdoch is a master class who can play different tunes to cater to different moulds of minds. Ultimately they all dance to his tunes.

In SL there is no such subterfuge in our media. Most of the time we know exactly where they stand. In its crudity there is a simplicity.

A tragic but very realistic portrayal of “Sri Lankans under fascism” and anyone can see how similar it is to “Germans under fascism” which is what leads me to emphasis the fact that nowhere in history has fascism been eradicated without outside intervention.

If RA thinks he is a genuine journalist how ca he be comfortable with only giving the regime’s version of the “news”.

He talks about justice to the people who elected the regime but has he forgotten tha the Nazi regime in per war Germany was also elected by the people? Does he know what the elected Nazi regime did to the people and to the world? What kind of a journalist is this sycophant.

I was copied into an email to Rajpal by the DSA Era Group copied to the Old Thomians from the same batch.

    “Dear Rajpal,

The NEW YORK TIMES puts Rajpal Abeynayake Chief Editor, Daily News in their main Saturday profile today.

Congratulations! We all Thomians are proud of you.(sic)
Your recent Editorials are just fantastic. You really give everyone tight who try to disrupt this Governments good work. Needless to say at present we are witnessing a development hither to not experienced in this country. As a state owned newspaper, chief editor you are taking the correct path and no one should obstruct you. At times I am happy to note that you are following your maternal grand fathers footsteps doing justice to safeguard our independence as a freedom fighter. Note with great satisfaction the encouragement you give our President with your daily editorials which I very eagerly read daily at times more than once. I state with great pride that your both grandparents were Thomians in addition to your father and one of them was instumentel in persuading Warden Stone to make representations to ruling authorities in an failed attempt to save Hendy Pediris. He was accused and discharged along with the likes of Hon D S Sennanayke, Sir D B Jayatileke for conspiring trouble against the white rulers.”

It made me chuckle and smile.
It’s true that you get a few rotten apples in every basket.

Grave digger Rajpal Abeynaike is gloating
that NYT has given prominence to him. He
is also gloating that Barrack Obama now
takes not of what he writes. What a
conceited idiot this monkey is. For
all the virtues he preaches – go ask a
tart in Geneva. She already has a purse,
identity card and some dollars. Of course
they have been replaced for him in Colombo
by you know who? A man named Bee Jay

Today’s issue of the Daily News is
    a collector’s item. That conceited
sod Rajpal Abeynaike has written about
himself in the editorial. It shows
one clear thing – no donkey in the
UPFA cares what the Daily News has
to carry. Worse of it all, none
one really bothers what that pin gona
Abeynaike says. The monkey is only
    praising himself. A conceited journalistic
    whore.
