Rajapaksas Don’t Know How To Handle The Crisis In Geneva Nor The Numerous Crises At Home: UNP

The United national Party calls on the people of Sri Lanka not to be misled by the propaganda of the regime and to seek rational reasons as to why international allies who once supported us to defeat the LTTE are now acting against the ruling administration.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa

The Rajapaksas believe they can appeal to the primordial racist sentiments of certain people by this kind of juvenile handling of the country’s foreign policy crisis.

“We must understand that this militaristic regime that continues to curtail our democratic freedoms in their attempts to establish a dynasty while making Sri Lanka the drug capital of Asia is solely responsible for our current plight. Yet those who will suffer the most through international action are the personnel of the security forces who would be collectively branded as war criminals, the poorest segments of our society through tightening of economic opportunities and all the rest of us, the ordinary citizens of this country. The Rajapaksa family and their selected loyalists have secured their wealth and futures and will not to be affected by these international actions.” the UNP said today.

Issuing a statement last night the UNP called on the regime to restore the rule of law and ensure democracy and good governance in order to wade off international concerns.

We publish below the statement in full;

Despite repeated appeals to the government by the United National Party and truly patriotic elements of this country to desist from taking petty political mileage out of the Geneva human rights crisis it is abundantly clear that the Rajapaksa administration is only interested in furthering its own narrow political agendas even at a colossal cost to the country.

As we had predicted, the timing of the Provincial Council elections that coincides with a vote on a resolution at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva and now the rhetoric of the regime’s main mouthpieces prove that this government is willing to sacrifice the safety of our security forces, the economy and the overall wellbeing of the people just to remain in power. The regime is clearly trying to make the Geneva crisis in to a political rallying call by portraying it as a conspiracy against Sri Lanka. The Rajapaksas believe they can appeal to the primordial racist sentiments of certain people by this kind of juvenile handling of the country’s foreign policy crisis. We believe that the Sri Lankan people are not so gullible as to fall for such gimmicks any longer.

The UNP has repeatedly warned that the inaction by the Rajapaksa regime to address the alleged violations of human rights and the blatant anti democratic policies such as the illegal impeachment of the Chief Justice, the repeal of the 17th Amendment, introduction of the draconian 18th amendmentmilitarization of every aspect of our social, political and economic lives and the overall break down of law and order have all contributed to the current crisis. Five years later, the Government is yet to bring to book the killers of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge. It refuses to reveal the whereabouts of cartoonist Prageeth Ekneligoda. It is refusing to investigate the disappearance of Lalith and Kugan, the human rights activists in the North. The inaction and lack of will makes it clear that the Government is implicated in each of these heinous crimes, for what else prevents a democratic Government which claims to be committed to protecting the security and rights of the people from investigating the brutal murders of its citizens?

This paralysis on the part of the Government to end impunity has caused the international community to lose faith in the Rajapaksa regime’s ability and willingness to protect the rights of Sri Lankan people. International action being called for today, is a consequence of the Rajapaksa Government’s paralysis on addressing grave crimes committed in this country. Let us be clear on that. This crisis Sri Lanka faces internationally is not, as the Government would prefer the people believe, an international conspiracy or petty jealousy against the Sri Lankan state for defeating terrorism.

It is poignant to note at this point that in the ongoing discussions in Geneva there are not only concerns raised on the alleged violations in the North but also in the South. There are now demands to seek justice for the people who were massacred at Weliweriya and the calls on the regime to stop attacks on minorities by groups with high ranking officials of the government.  Rather than be outraged at these international calls for accountability, shouldn’t we as Sri Lankans be ashamed that we have not demanded the same of our Government? How is it that Sri Lankans can continue to ignore the Government’s culpability in the massacre of civilians demanding clean water or the ongoing attacks by religious extremists on minority religious communities and their places of worship?

The UNP has repeatedly appealed to the government to address the allegations raised in the international arena with the seriousness they deserve. In an attempt to protect the interests of the ruling family and their coterie of followers,  the regime has determinedly decided to ignore such advice. By doing this Rajapaksa regime has risked our nation being cast as a pariah in the community of civilized nations. Though the Rajapaksa regime is attempting to rile up tribal sentiment among the majority community with its chest beating defiance of the international community, in reality what they are doing is hiding behind the false pretense of nationalism to protect their own political and commercial interests.

The UNP has repeatedly called for a change in the discourse on human rights. We continue to educate the public on why protection of human rights by our government is in the best interest of all of us.  Irrespective of the regime’s portrayal of international conspiracies it was President Mahinda Rajapaksa himself who promised the Secretary General of the United Nations in May 2009 that he would address “the aspirations and grievances of all communities and working towards a lasting political solution” and pledged “to proceed with the implementation of the 13th Amendment, as well as to begin a broader dialogue with all parties, including the Tamil parties in the new circumstances, to further enhance this process and to bring about lasting peace and development in Sri Lanka.” Having misled and continuously lied to the Sri Lankan people and our friends abroad the regime is now claiming they are being hounded.

We once again call on the people of our country not to be misled by the propaganda of the regime and to seek rational reasons as to why international allies who once supported us to defeat the LTTE are now acting against the ruling administration. We must understand that this militaristic regime that continues to curtail our democratic freedoms in their attempts to establish a dynasty while making Sri Lanka the drug capital of Asia is solely responsible for our current plight. Yet those who will suffer the most through international action are the personnel of the security forces who would be collectively branded as war criminals, the poorest segments of our society through tightening of economic opportunities and all the rest of us, the ordinary citizens of this country. The Rajapaksa family and their selected loyalists have secured their wealth and futures and will not to be affected by these international actions.

Even at a cost to political expediency the UNP has offered our support to the Government to address these challenges. We have called on the regime to restore the rule of law and ensure democracy and good governance in order to wade off international concerns. Repeatedly the regime has chosen not to take in to account the interests of the people or this country. They do not know how to handle the crisis in Geneva nor the numerous crises at home. Whether it is securing our children from the drug menace, providing equal economic opportunities, protection of basic human rights of citizens or fostering ethnic and religious harmony in order to prevent another war the only party that can deliver is the United National Party.

The premise of UNP that ‘international allies who once supported us to defeat the LTTE’ is calculated deception. US did not do the job of dismantling LTTE for SL. It did so to punish LTTE for its annoying obstinacy. US on several occasions had warned LTTE to abdicate its terror tactics. It had insisted on LTTE giving up its arms struggle, for US to extract a reasonable solution for the travails of Tamils.

LTTE did not accede. (There were mixed signals coming from US. Hilary Clinton was quoted as opining that LTTE was struggling for liberation.)

UNP is no different from the current Regime when it comes to its approach and political response to the Tamil question. Even the tactics is similar. Strategy of course is an ever changing political gambit.

The complaint that the current leadership attempts to establish a dynasty, though true, doesn’t hold water. UNP is not much different; just not as openly voracious.

The supposition that’those who will suffer the most through international action’ will be the security forces and the poorest segments of the society is a veiled attempt to draw them away from voting for the current administration, again.

If anybody would suffer out of economic sanctions, it would be Tamils first. But, that would not be first to Tamils.

US having run aground the ‘hope’ of Tamils against SL oppression and deceit owes Tamils one!

“Even at a cost of political expediency UNP has offered to help the Government”

…Is this from the Hiru TV Comedy show?

Watching the pathetic UNP leader squirming and wriggling to find something relevant and convincing to tell the inhabitants in the West at the election rallies must be hard for the believers…

The latest I have seen is his promise to organize a protest bigger than Ukraine and Egypt combined if Rajapksas ban the “Facebook”..

Wonder whom he has in mind to attend this mother of all Ranil’s Protests?…

Because the great majority of the inhabitants, in fact 75 % of the total who happen to be Sinhala Buddhists wouldn’t know what the Hell this Facebook is , let alone having their profile pics in it…

Can the Elite and the Intelligentsia on their own do this Udgoshana aka Ranil’s Facebook Protest?.

I doubt whether even Vellalas in Wellawatta give him a hand, when their CM is now all into Development in the North to improve the living conditions of the non Vellala lot.

Unless they get Bishop Raiappu to send over his ‘ Flock”

If the UNP thinks that Ranil is doing the inhabitants a favour by Demanding our Govt and the brave Soldiers bend over to Cameron , Pillai and the Lot. it must be kidding for sure.

The great majority of inhabitants who now live in peace and harmony earning a living without getting blown up, will say , Please don’t cop any political expediency on our behalf.

Save it and bend over yourselves later with your Common Candidate,if he can make it.

    Dear UNP,

“The United national Party calls on the people of Sri Lanka not to be misled by the propaganda of the regime and to seek rational reasons as to why international allies who once supported us to defeat the LTTE are now acting against the ruling administration.”

Please do your job as the Opposition party and inform the people why our friends who helped us defeat LTTE are now turning against us?
    Why?

    Dictatorship?

    Racism

Monk Mahanama Buddhism? and its Imaginations.

We all know this land Belongs to the Native Veddah who walked, unlike the other Paras, or Para-deshis or Parangios, So why are the Sinhala Buddhist Racist Chauvinist think like Monk Mahanama imagination of 5th century is all that is needed?

    Who are they fooling?

    Let the People know.

Yes, UNP must come forward and make it clear why our friends who helped us defeating LTTE are now turning against us?

This is a very good point.

Was that at all possible to defeat LTTE if US and INdia did not help in that regard ?

What went wrong in the post war sessions to u turn by the US ?

Why the the US even today failed to question one of lanken war field men -Shravinda Silva in this regard even if he is in the states since long ?

India´s TN related problems and inner ccompulsions could be comphrehesible but why the US to go against Rajapakshe regime if they thought Rajapaskeh was just an agent worked for US and Indian agendas in the anhilation of LTTErs in May 2009 ?

Wow, Finally, long time in coming from am opposition which has virtually lost its shine on the populace. I still wonder if its too little too late. I hope not. Anyway, Great stuff for a party revival, and I hope it starts picking up the pieces sooner to take this great nation forward, and make everyone one of us to be proud we are Sri Lankan, and our country not some runaway pariah state in the eyes of the International community. All this BS of communal politics should cease immediately, BBS/SR/JHU disbanded, dabbling in politics must be banned for all monks (they can never be expected to be fair), the hand of the judiciary needs to be strengthened. Time period limits need to be placed on active politicians, there are some who are hanging on for as long as 2o years or more in power. They will never resign and go and enjoy the fruits of their earnings, until they die suddenly or chased out.

The UNHRC was given a great chance to act against Sri Lanka non other than the present ruling party. the LTTE lobby groups such as Diaspora has capitalized on it ,has taken firm steps along with the instability in Indian politics. has a clear case to present on behalf of achieving LTTE dreams of separate elam. the concerns of grave crimes in the capital and the south of SL and the ever deteriorating social and spiritual stability has given the upper hand for the international community to point finger at the present government. the suffers if any sanctions were implemented will be the poor citizen of the country.

What do they mean by international allies that helped us defeat LTTE? As far as we remember what the international community lectured us and what the current UNP leadership parroted was that LTTE cannot be defeated militarily and we should go for a power sharing mechanism with them.

UNP should just cut the crap and answer these questions if they seriously want to attract responsible patriotic votes.
    1) Will they be offering a self governing authority to TNA if they ever come to power?
    2) Will the army be pulled back from north?
    3) Will they merge back northern and eastern provinces?
    4) Will they open the military for international war crimes investigations.
    5) If yes will they also probe alleged crimes in 88-89 era?
    6) If yes would they also encourage to probe links between TNA and LTTE and sources of funding for the LTTE or would they only encourage to probe the political leadership, military, karuna, pillaiyan and KP?

We know how UNP handled international pressure. Tried to divide the country secretly in collusion with terrorists. Thank goodness CBK dismissed the perpetrators. So, UNP, shut up and go to your hole!

“The United national Party calls on the people of Sri Lanka not to be misled by the propaganda of the regime and to seek rational reasons as to why international allies who once supported us to defeat the LTTE are now acting against the ruling administration.”

And the people of Sri Lanka call upon the UNP to eliminate its power-hungry, ethnocentric and corrupt old guard, restore confidence that it would (unlike in the past) value human life and dignity, assure us of our fundamental rights in the event it somehow manages to establish a responsible government, articulate in a respectful manner (i.e. not by brash, abrasive political speeches on stages and TV, nor by in-fighting with sticks and guns) a clear vision for national progress, and mobilize the public through sustained action (and not merely through statements) to end the current period of tyrannical rule.

    Your turn, UNP.

Heavy price for Ranils coziness with UNP. After the establishment of monarchy UNP will be declated a terrorist organization.

But Ranil will be happy to turn the AC to max and watch TV. Good luck to the rest of the spineless UNP ers.

I agree Rajapaksa cannot handle issues related to Geneva.
At most, he is best suited to be the Mayor of a Municipal
Council where “arapang machan” politics is the order of
    the day.

But don’t forget, part of the problem for Rajapaksa has
been brought about by the erudite UNP leader, highly
popular, most loved and most qualified Ranil Wickremesinghe.
He flirted with the LTTE, allowed them to get down weapons
and have a lovely time. The tie coat man did not feel for
    the country.

Now, he does not speak. The voice of UNP that is coming out
in statements these days are from the Mangala Samaraweera
group. All the tough talking is done by them whilst RW
cosily stands aside. Even pathola Karu is quiet.

So now the UNP is heading in a different direction with the
Samaraweera boys calling the shots. Ranil won’t wind it. It
takes the heat off him. As Kiri Yaka says, he can tune his
a/c to max and go to sleep. The next shock will come when the
UNP is routed at Sout and West Provincial Councils. RW will
    blame the Leadership Council.

Patholaya will blame the candidates. The circus will continue.

This government is handling the crisis the way it does, deliberately. It knows very well why it is doing so. We are the fools who fail to comprehend its devious motives.

If the war was won in the right way UAS will never get involved in this matter, but after winning the war why did Sri Lankan army killed thousands of innocent Tamil people who got nothing do with. USA is not questioning the war, but killing the innocent people.
