The Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith yesterday warned the Government that foreign intervention would be inevitable unless serious allegations of rights abuses and the work of reconciliation is addressed within the country.

Issuing a pastoral letter yesterday, the Cardinal urged President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Tamil National Alliance to work towards finding a long term political solution to the ethnic conflict.
“Foreigners should not tell us what to do. We are not a pack of fools. But if we do not resolve these issues, then we open ourselves to foreign intervention,” the Cardinal said.
In his pastoral letter, the Cardinal warned that an international inquiry into war crimes could pose a serious threat to the country’s sovereignty.
In its 24-page letter, the church also asked the government to ensure accountability for politically-motivated killings going back four decades.

Cardinal has shown his biased opinions a number of times about race and religion. A person of his status should be humanistic without favoring any religion. He should stay away from politics and giving advice to politicians but only give respect to all religions irrespective of any sect or differences. Nepal was the last Hindu Kingdom but both Hinduism and Buddhism are given the same respect and veneration. We cannot blame Cardinal Malcolm or any other religious leaders for their believes but they should refrain from talking politics and especially the rotten one- the Sri Lankan politics. The politicians should never be allowed to interfere and leave the religions to be looked after by the politically correct sector. No religion is above any religion and mixing politics with religion is cancerous and has brought all the miseries and unpleasant things to our nation. Look at the Hindu and Muslim religious leaders, who hardly interfere or dabble in active politics here in Sri Lanka. Similarly Buddhist and Christian prelates should follow their example for a harmonious nation. Hope we get a sensible leader in future who could make Sri Lanka a secular nation.
