Regressive Groups Continue To Throw Hurdles At MMDA Reforms

Archaic minded groups continued to be an obstacle by throwing hurdles at the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) reforms, with the Colombo District Masjid Federation (CDMF) carrying out a signature campaign in an effort to hamper the reform process.

Muslims Sri Lanka Colombo TelegraphLast Friday, the CDMF launched a campaign to collect signatures from Muslim men against the reforms process. A letter in Tamil along with a form to list the signatories were circulated across several mosques in Colombo requesting Muslim men who attended Friday Jumma prayers to place their signature in the document which said ‘Please no changes to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act.’

The latest move however comes while a committee tasked with reforming the Act is in the process of finalizing the report which will be submitted to Parliament. “We are still working on it, but we will finalize it soon and the report will be handed over to Parliament,” a member of the committee who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the Colombo Telegraph.

The latest impediment led by CDMF has come under heavy criticism, including from Ameer Faaiz, Director – International Affairs of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC). “This campaign by this group is a very regressive step. We must acknowledge that MMDA needs to be reformed, if it is to stay on,” he said.

Faaiz told the Colombo Telegraph if such anti-reform attitudes continue, the same people who are against the reforms now will have to face a situation where the entire Act might be at risk of being abolished, if the Act is not allowed to be reformed in a timely manner.

“The State must take ownership, and ensure this law is on par with other laws. There must be equality and it is the responsibility of the State to ensure that equality among all will be enforced,” he said.

Faaiz also highlighted that while there were some theologians who opposed the reforms, there were also quite a number of theologians who had voiced their support to the reforms. He recalled how one theologian had emphasized that age is not only about being physically matured, but one needs to attain a level of understanding where a contract can be understood by someone who is signing it. “Even Muslim countries have progressed and have enforced a minimum age of marriage for females,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Amjad Saleem, who functions as an independent consultant noted that the MMDA was not cast in stone and therefore deserve discussion and reflection. “I think there should be space for improving or making things better given the new context. If there are reforms to be done, then we should embrace it,” he added.

Due to the MMDA of 1951, Muslim women in Sri Lanka are openly discriminated and suffer from laws that deny them equality. The MMDA also offers no constitutional guarantee to safeguards the fundamental rights of equality and non-discrimination of Muslim women.

Late last year, the Sri Lanka Thawheed Jama’ath (SLTJ) led a demonstration in Colombo against the MMDA reforms, demanding that child marriages be allowed. Many studies have also highlighted the ugly sides of the Act including where girls as young as 14 were forced in marriage. The report titled ‘Unequal Citizens: Muslim Women’s Struggle for Justice and Equality in Sri Lanka’ released last year also sheds light to the harrowing experiences Muslim women undergo in the hands of the Quazi court system.

Women who have also been working in the MMDA reform process has been subject to various forms of harassments, while some activists were even threatened for their reform work. (By Munza Mushtaq)

Whe are the Colombo District Masjid Federation (CDMF) people?

They are the Ulemas and Imams who want to maintain their hegemony.

      1. They believe that the Earth was and is flat and laid out like a carpet.

      2. They believe that the Sun goes around the Earth.

      3. They believe that it is “Civilized ” to marry 9 year-old girls and rape legally, and that women are just chattel to be exchanged and have fewer rights than men.

      4. They conveniently forget that Prophet Mohamed first married an older woman, and a widow at that.

      5. They do not even understand what the Quran of all about, and do not treat it like a book of knowledge, that was clearly stated by the Islamic Scholar Ibn Rashd, Averroes, in the 12th Century.

      6. Bangla Desh and Turkey are fine with the reforms.

      7. The IQ of these characters Colombo District Masjid Federation (CDMF) must be quite low and they want theur hegemony to be shown.

They should be asked to go to Saudi Arabia to practice thaie version, and follow the Devil , Satan, Iblis.

Do they follow the Iblis, Sahytan?

Getalife, do you realise that the Sri Lankan Muslim women and girls have a “life”, a slave life, as chattel, even though a slave life under the hegemony of the Ulema, Immams and men, and the reforms for the MMDA is towards getting a life for the Sri Lankan Muslim women, who do not seem ti have a life.

amarasisi sounds like the guy who just lives alone in a room with nobody to love or talk to. Honestly speaking, you need some fresh air and sunlight!. Your too worried about the Muslim community, while ignoring the perils facing our community, such as Alchoholisms, domestic violence, rising hatred among our monks etc!.. I think many Muslim women are doing well in life. I was in the negombo area a few weeks back, and the person who was manning a boutique who also happened to be its owner was a Muslim lady and her two children! So I don’t think Muslim women are as oppressed as you put it.

What you have said about Quran and Islam are totally false and incorrect.
It a is reflection of your utter ignorance of Quran and Islam.

If what you have said are correct only utter fools will be remaining in Islam. There are great scientists, professors and scholars who are followers of Islam. Are they fools?

Equal rights for woman and man is a misnomer. If it is true, man and woman should be put together in all games including cricket and foot ball. Can a man get pregnant and bear children? A man can walk on the road with a pair of shorts only. Can a woman do this? Islam recognizes these physiological differences in each gender and attaches the rights and duties accordingly but not equally.

Islam prescribes a complete way of life. It is in most of the cases obligatory on every Muslim to follow this way.
The way of life followed by Muslims do not cause any harm to non Muslims. It is not the business of non Muslims to meddle with the internal affairs of the Muslims. No body attacks Christianity, Buddhism or any other religion in the same way as Islam. In a way such attacks contribute for the growth of Islam. Islam is on a solid foundation.
Islamic faith date backs to first man Adam. The faith had different versions. Final version was named as Islam. Every Muslim have to believe in Jesus, Moses and other prophets and original Bible and other original books to be a Muslim.

What is your definition of a Muslim?

          1. One who proclaims, “There is No God, But Allah” ?

          2. 1. One who proclaims, “There is No God, But Allah, And Mohammad is a Messenger of Allah”

          3. Other Definitions and requirement?

Then how come the Wahhabites, The Wahhabi, Salafis, Tawheedis, ISIS, Boko-Haram, Deobandi etc, call Shia, Sufi, Ahmeedia and other Muslims, non-Muslims and try to kull them?

Amarasiri’s explanation is that Wahhabites, The Wahhabi, Salafis, Tawheedis, ISIS, Boko-Haram, Deobandi etc. follow Satan, Iblis, as per Hadit of Najd.

          Wahhabi sack of Karbala

The Wahhabi sack of Karbala occurred on 21 April 1802 (1216 Hijri) (1801), under the rule of Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad the second ruler of the First Saudi State. Approximately 12,000 Wahhabis from Najd attacked the city of Karbala. The attack coincided with the anniversary of Ghadir Khum event, or 10th Muharram.

Wahhabis killed 2,000–5,000 of the inhabitants and plundered the tomb of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of Muhammad and son of Ali ibn Abi Talib, and destroyed its dome, seizing a large quantity of spoils, including gold, Persian carpets, money, pearls, and guns that had accumulated in the tomb, most of them donations. The attack lasted for eight hours, after which the Wahhabis left the city with more than 4,000 camels carrying their plunder.

            AMARE,
All the Prophets from Adam to Muhammad ( the last)were Muslims. A Muslim is one who submits to the will
            of Allah.
Muslims have to believe and accept all the Prophets and the scriptures revealed to them.
That is an article of faith.
Al AZHAR was founded by the Fatimid Caliphate ( Sheeah). Muslims are not bound by their edicts.
Muslims are not expected to build their graves. Venerating people who are dead and buried is an act
of Shirk(ascribing partners to one and only God – Allah) and major sin and takes you out of the fold of
Islam. Immediately after the peaceful conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (PBOH) destroyed all idols in
Kaabah and in and around Makkah. Built up graves, considered, shrines are also to be destroyed,
whether it is a Prophets or grandson. Imam Muhammad IBN (son of) Abdul WAHHAAB ,when he saw
all the Shirk and all the pagan practices that had re appeared he along with Imam,Saud waged war against
those practices and destroyed these shrines. This is establishing Thawheed (Monotheism) the core and
foundation of Islam. These were two who were acting as per the commands of the Quran.
Amare, some others said you must be a deviant Muslim coward, parading under a Sinhala name.
You sill never get a Sinhala man acting like this. Everywhere you repeat the same comments. About time

Al-Azhar University (ahz-har; Arabic: جامعة الأزهر (الشريف)‎‎ Jāmiʻat al-Azhar (al-Sharīf), IPA: [ˈɡæmʕet elˈʔɑzhɑɾ eʃʃæˈɾiːf], “the (honorable) Azhar University”) is a university in Cairo, Egypt. Associated with Al-Azhar Mosque in Islamic Cairo, it is Egypt’s oldest degree-granting university and is renowned as “Sunni Islam’s most prestigious university”. In addition to higher education, Al-Azhar oversees a national network of schools with approximately two million students. As of 1996, over 4000 teaching institutes in Egypt were affiliated with the University.

Founded in 970 or 972 by the Fatimids as a centre of Islamic learning, its students studied the Qur’an and Islamic law in detail, along with logic, grammar, rhetoric, and how to calculate the phases of the moon. It was one of the first universities in the world, and the only one in the Arabic world to survive as a modern university including secular subjects in the curriculum. Today it is the chief centre of Arabic literature and Islamic learning in the world. In 1961 additional non-religious subjects were added to its curriculum.

Its mission is to propagate Islam and Islamic culture. To this end, its Islamic scholars (ulamas) render edicts (fatwas) on disputes submitted to them from all over the Sunni Islamic world regarding proper conduct for Muslim individuals and societies. Al-Azhar also trains Egyptian government-appointed preachers in proselytization (da’wa).

Its library is considered second in importance in Egypt only to the Egyptian National Library and Archives. In May 2005, Al-Azhar in partnership with a Dubai information technology enterprise, IT Education Project (ITEP) launched the H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Project to Preserve Al Azhar Scripts and Publish Them Online (the “Al-Azhar Online Project”) to eventually publish online access to the library’s entire rare manuscripts collection, comprising about seven million pages of material.

MULLAH, just address the issues raised. If you have a counter argument come up with supporting references and data.

Ad hominem* attacks will get you nowhere, and shoes the shallowness of your counter-arguments.

              Ad hominem*

Ad hominem (Latin for “to the man” or “to the person”), short for argumentum ad hominem, is a logical fallacy in which an argument is rebutted by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.

Fallacious ad hominem reasoning is normally categorized as an informal fallacy, more precisely as a genetic fallacy, a subcategory of fallacies of irrelevance.

There are eminent scientists believing in the Bible but they constantly admit, they do not believe in it literally, E.g. Universe was formed in 6 days etc. But you cannot do this in Islamic Quran. You either believe in it literally wholesale or become an apostate, the penalty for which is death. This was accepted in medieval times, but these days people have access to superior education, world opinions and religions, it is an impossible task.

        Amare for your information,

Because the Earth is huge and its curvature cannot be seen from a short distance, it appears to be spread out and one cannot see anything that would make one fear living on it, but this does not contradict the fact that it is round, because it is very big. However they say that it is not evenly round; rather it is indented or pushed in at the north and south poles. Hence they say that it is egg-shaped.

Thus it is known that the Earth is round, and that is not contradicted by the fact that it is like an egg. Rather the false view is that which claims that it is flat, as the Church used to believe and for that reason used to curse and burn those scientists who said that it was round.

Just go to the sea and observe, ships disappearing in the horizon ! Why it is because of the curvature of the earth. Any kid knows this.

Today scientist have come to accept the scientific facts mentioned in the Quran. A few years ago the Nobel
Prize was awarded for the one who found out about the expanding universe. This has been mentioned in
the Quran revealed fourteen centuries ago.

A few years ago the Nobel Prize was awarded for the one who found out about the expanding universe. This has been mentioned in the Quran revealed fourteen centuries ago.” Do you know the Nobel Prize is for the one who says a scientific theory first? Can you write a clean essay saying that “universe is expanding” was first postulated by Mohammed, not by the prize winner, so that we can sent it to Norwegian Nobel Committee and put forward a challenge for that award.
When they are ready to reward Nobel prize to Darwin who basically said there is no first man, but may be there a first microbe from which life evolved, then how the Quran going to date back it 14 centuries ago? Your stupidest flaw foundation is saying that there is a first man.

Can you cite from Quran Muhammad saying Earth is not round but egg shaped?

Can you tell how Mohamed has defined Universe? He said it is expanding, but to where? Is that part it expanded into is already existed or newly created. If it’s created, why did he call expanding but not created new space? If the space already existed and the objects just moved in, why is he calling it as expansion? Because Mohammed not knows all objects on the universe are orbiting so if there is boundary to universe they are bound break out of it?

Who are you? Are you really an Ignorant Mullah?

Facts, data, and observations are hard for those believers who are brainwashed and immersed in the myths, lack reason and critical thinking skills, and believe in the literal interpretation of the scriptures. This is general, and Muslims are not an exception, but prominent, courtesy of Wahhabism. Just read up on Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton and Foucault. Still 25% of american, 354% of the Europeans and perhaps more than 50% of the others still believe that the Sun goes around the Earth, as claimed by the scriptures.

By the way, Aristotle argued in 3090 BC , that the Earth is spherical, based on the shadow of the Earth on the moon. Eratosthenes measured the circumference of the Earth around 300 BC in one of the most beautiful experiments by the ancients.

Here They Are, Science’s 10 Most Beautiful Experiments

Eratosthenes’ measurement of the Earth’s circumference

At noon on the summer solstice in the Egyptian town now called Aswan, the sun hovers straight overhead: objects cast no shadow and sunlight falls directly down a deep well. When he read this fact, Eratosthenes, the librarian at Alexandria in the third century B.C., realized he had the information he needed to estimate the circumference of the planet. On the same day and time, he measured shadows in Alexandria, finding that the solar rays there had a bit of a slant, deviating from the vertical by about seven degrees.

The rest was just geometry. Assuming the earth is spherical, its circumference spans 360 degrees. So if the two cities are seven degrees apart, that would constitute seven-360ths of the full circle — about one-fiftieth. Estimating from travel time that the towns were 5,000 ”stadia” apart, Eratosthenes concluded that the earth must be 50 times that size — 250,000 stadia in girth. Scholars differ over the length of a Greek stadium, so it is impossible to know just how accurate he was. But by some reckonings, he was off by only about 5 percent. (Ranking: 7)

            Amarasiri has no chromosome disorder.

May be MULLAH has one due to excessive inbreeding. In Wahhabi Saudi Arabia, the inbreeding rate is around 60%, and they are one of the most obese nations on Earth.

Anyway, since you lack knowledge and critical thinking skills, let Amrasiri help you get the correct answers.

            “MULLAH
How many chromosomes have you got? 48? 46? What about your Chromosome # 2?”

            Answers :

You go 46 chromosomes now, bit your Primate ancestors used to have 48 , but two fused to form Chromosome #2.

      Sensational

“They use a destitute lady to show the standard for Muslim women.”

Ask the question, why are they destitute?

Is it because they are suppressed more than their fellow citizen women of other communities, on a relative basis.

When they are divorced, they are more destitute than their fellow citizens.

They are restricted in the work and the professions they can practice.

Repealing MMDA will help reducing the destitute-ness of the the Sri Lankan Muslim women.

Now Muslim women in the island do not dress in this Tamil Muslim style. Wearing the saree and just covering the head. This sort of dress, that was very common around 25 years ago, belongs to a by gone era or still worm by some elderly Muslim women, who still stick to their Tamil Muslim tradition. Now instead of progressing they have become regressive and cover their entire body and hair and most of the face in the Arab Muslim style, and try to look like some pathetic carbon clones of the gulf Arabs. The regressive extremists elements have indeed taken over not only creating chaos within their community but even to the rest.

Your women, some do not wear a blouse and only wrap up a saree. So the more you expose of your body
beautiful ,you are considered progressive. Why the heck are you buggers worried about Muslim women.?
Just take care of your women.!!!
I have no objection to your women walking about nude,as long as our society accepts it.
Today there is freedom for nudity. In that case that same freedom should be extended to those who dress
        modestly.

I agree that they shouldn’t have used that picture; it has allowed you to change the subject. We MUST have reform of MMDA – for two reasons.

First, it is only right that women should enjoy equal rights, and once that happens, population growth rates will come down. There was this article:

      https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/sirisenas-order-to-extend-wilpattu-national-park-is-it-to-please-racists-deprive-muslims-of-their-lands/

I had a very enjoyable exchange of views with Bisthan Batcha in the middle of the comments section.

Secondly, those children don’t BELONG unconditionally to the parents. They are first little, helpless, human children. And they are our citizens. What happens to each of them is my concern, although I don’t want to do anything controversial. I don’t want any 14 year old girl forced to sleep with a forty year old man; AYMAN, I think had referred to casual teen sex. I wouldn’t encourage it, but I won’t rail against it either.

I had a difficult exchange of views with a guy named “Colin” who wanted me and the Muslim lady author to make pronouncements on teen promiscuity. In some other place, perhaps! Fortunately, he didn’t demand my views on LGBT activity!

      https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/mmda-personal-laws-at-the-expense-of-fundamental-rights/

Here’s how conservatives have always been able to riddle their way through!

The fact that a Committee of Muslim Professionals and Theologians appointed by the then GOSL to examine and recommend amendments to the MMDA of 1951 will be celebrating it’s 8th Anniversary sometime in 2017 without being able to submit even a Draft Report of it’s recommendations, reflects poorly not on it’s constituent members, but rather on the Muslim Community in general and on the religion of Islam in particular.

It throws sharply into focus the ambiguity, lack of clarity and direction in many aspects of Islamic law and it’s sources of inspiration and interpretations. So much so that to the amusement of it’s non-Muslim compatriots the local Muslim community is beginning to look like a headless chicken trying to find it’s way out of a hole.

I would request my Muslim brothers and sisters to dwell on the words of Galileo Galilei “I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.”

Why do we need to have a separate act or law in the first place?

Despite whatever race or belief structure practiced by yourself, we are, at the end of it all Sri Lankan.

We should follow one law where marriage and divorce is concerned with the fundamental rights of either party enshrined at the heart of it.

If you dont like it, maybe you need to find a different country to live in…

2000 years? You don’t know your history don’t you? Islam is only around 1300-1400 years old, and like all civilizations in the past they had their heyday. Europe was in the dark-ages when they were in their golden age.

Here is Neil DeGrasse Tyson – on the golden age of Islam and its collapse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDAT98eEN5Q

plus go read up one names like, Ibn-Sīnā, Ibn al-Haytham, Ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (to name a few).

I am Buddhist, but I’ll state this very clearly. The Islamic golden age contributed to Mathematics and Science infinitely more than the entire Buddhists world had done for the past 2500 years. In-fact, what has the Buddhist world contributed to Mathematics and Science in the past 2500 years?

Sadly, Islamic civilizations are now in the dark-ages and there does not seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel. But please try not to belittle the achievements of the ancient Muslims. Their contribution to humanity is on par with the ancient Indians, Chinese, Greeks, Romans, Renaissance Europeans, and many, many more.

Part 1: What Drove the Rise of Islamic Science and Civilization?

“Islam is only around 1300-1400 years old, and like all civilizations in the past they had their heyday. Europe was in the dark-ages when they were in their golden age.”

The interesting questions to ask is why it went to great heights and why the Islamic, Science, Philosophy and Civilization declined, and was eclipsed by the West?

For centuries following the fall of Rome, medieval Europe was a benighted backwater, a world of subsistence farming, minimal literacy, and violent conflict. Meanwhile, in lands from Persia to Spain, Islamic culture, science, philosophy, reason and inquiry was thriving, dazzling those Europeans fortunate enough to catch even a glimpse of the scientific advances coming from Baghdad, Antioch, or Toledo. There, philosophers, mathematicians, scientists, and astronomers were steadily advancing the frontiers of knowledge, as well as revitalizing the works of Plato and Aristotle that had been lost or forgotten.

Central to this effort was the royal library in Baghdad, known as the House of Wisdom, where an army of scholars worked at the behest of the Abbasid caliphs.

Thre were brilliant Muslim thinkers, such as al-Khwarizmi, pioneer of algebra; Avicenna, the physician and philosopher, Gaber, who made great advances in chemistry; and Ibn Rashd, Averroes, one of the greatest Islamic Scholars and Philosophers, a polymath, renowned simply as ” The Commentator” for his writings that expounded and extended Aristotle’s great works of logic.

        Q. What Drove the Rise of Islamic Science and Civilization? It has been stated that early Muslims, based on the Quranic verses, “And say: My Lord increase me in knowledge.”(Qur’an, Ta-Ha 20:114), interpreted the acquisition of knowledge mandatory for Muslims, to explore what God, Allah, has created.

This is because knowledge is the basis of all good; it generates actions that are based on the commandments of Allah and the instructions of the Prophet . Hence, every Muslim must instil in his mind a desire to seek knowledge. Allah (Most Exalted is He) instructed His Prophet — and thus all Muslims — to ask Allah to increase him in knowledge. He said:
“And say: My Lord increase me in knowledge.” (Qur’an, Ta-Ha 20:114)

Fortunately, the Ulema and Mullah were not powerful, and different opinions were welcome and tolerated, until around the year 1,200 CE.

Rest of the story in Part 2.

Part 2: What Lead to the Decline Islamic Science and Civilization?

“Islam is only around 1300-1400 years old, and like all civilizations in the past they had their heyday. Europe was in the dark-ages when they were in their golden age.”

The interesting questions to ask is why after it went to great heights and why the Islamic, Science, Philosophy and Civilization declined subsequently?

Central to this DECLINE was HEGEMONY OF ULAMA AND MULLAH, the so-called Islamic Scholars and Theologians, who prevailed POLITICALLY with the Rulers, because of the CONTROL they had with the masses.

At that time brilliant Muslim thinkers, philosophers, were critically evaluating and analyzing what the Revelations said and what it meant, by using reason, logic, observations and common sense.

The first speculative theologians in Islam are called Mu’tazilites ( from about 723 CE). A later generation of theologians, the Ash’arites, named after Al Ash’ari, born, 773 CE, are forced by weight of evidence to admit a certain irrationality in theological concepts.

The Ash’arites, hold the middle way, between the traditionalists ( who literally interpret the Quran) saying Revelation is above reason and Observations, and the others,Mu’tazilites, who affirm that reason unaided by revelation is capable of religious truths.

Unfortunately, by 1,200 CE, due to the theology of Hamid Al-Ghazali, the HEGEMONY OF ULAMA AND MULLAH, the so-called Islamic Scholars and Theologians, prevailed POLITICALLY.

Revelation was elevated above Reason and Observations. The traditionalist Theologians were happy, and they were able to maintain their hegemony. Reason and Free inquiry declined.

The Islamic Science and philosophy has not recovered since the 12th century. With the advent of the Devil, Satan, Iblis following Wahhabites (Wahhabies, Salafies, Tawheedis, ISIS, ISIL, Taliban, Deobandi, Boko-Haram and other clones), the task of recovery has become much harder.

Meanwhile the rest of the non-Muslim world of making great progress in Science, Development and in other spheres.

Have the Muslims identified the problem, yet?

“Islam is only around 1300-1400 years old, and like all civilizations in the past they had their heyday. Europe was in the dark-ages when they were in their golden age.”

Meanwhile the rest of the non-Muslim world is making great progress in Science, Development and in other spheres.

Have the Muslims identified the problem, yet? Do they have the IQ to identify the problem?

By the mid-eleventh century, the Muslims were hard at work on three great cultural projects, pursued respectively by scholar-theologians, philosopher-scientists, and Sufi mystics. At this juncture, one of the intellectual giants pf world history was born of Persian-speaking parents in the province of Khorasan. His name was Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali.

In his day, some Ulama had elaborated a theology to compete with that of the Mu’tzalites. The Asharite school, as it was called, insisted that faith could never be based on Reason, only on Revelation. Reason’s function was only to support revelation.

Asharite Theologians were constantly squaring off against prominent Mu’tzalites in public debates, but the Mu’tzalites knew fancy Greek tricks, for winning arguments, such as logic and rhetoric, so they were constantly making Asharites look confused.

Ghazali came to their rescue. Then he wrote a book on Greek philosophy called The Aims of the Philosophers. Then he wrote the Incoherence of the Philosophers. He attacked the cause-and-effect relationships among material phenomena.

Gahazali allowed that mathematics, logic, and even natural sciences could lead to true conclusions, but wherever they conflicted, with the Revelations, they were wrong. But if science is right only when it reaches the same conclusions as revelation, we don’t need science. All the truth we need we can get from the revelations. This is the position of the theologians, and those who literally interpreted the revelations.

Some of the philosophers struck back. Ibn Rushd, Averroes, wrote a reposte to Ghazali called, The Incoherence of the Incoherence, but it did little good, even though Ghazali was shown to be error 17 times, and when the smoke cleared, Ghazali had win the day.

From this time forward, Greek-based Muslim Philosophy and science lost steam and Muslim interest in natural science foundered. It has not recovered since.

A expected, Ghazali won tremendous accolades from the theologians for his work. The political leadership of the Caliphs went along.

You all know the rest of the story.

there’s nothing wrong in having a separate law or act for their religious belief, that is a right one can enjoy in a democratic country. people who don’t like to follow that can go away from that since there is no penalty for leaving the religion.

“There is no penalty for leaving the religion.” May be.

But every newborn baby has Rights. And when they are brought up in certain ways, free-will ceases to exist for them. I dare say that we all try to influence others to agree with us rather than encourage them to think for themselves. But they bring kids up in ghettos from which there is no escape.

There is this group of people in America who cut themselves off from the majority:

Respect does not mean that the human rights must be sacrificed for respecting Religious Myths.

What the Ulema and Imams want to do is to use Religion as a cover up to abuse women and deny them human and citizen’s rights in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

Besides, they are abusing the Quran to their own advantage instead of using as a book of knowledge. Just read up the Islamic Scholar Ibn Rashd, Averroes.

I think Sinhala buddhists are really chicken. Even Lord Buddha did not allow unjustice to happen in the name of religion. Anyway, India At that time was far humane than present Sri lanka. Suffering of muslim women is not reported even by muslims. Probably they are scared of reprisals.

I heard even recently how the prospective husband barged into the room of an underage girl who came from school and statred molesting her. It was in the news paper. Sinhala buddhists should not allow muslims to be pedophiles by marrying 12 year 14 year old girls.

The best thing is expose muslims. They use religion to every inhuman act killing animals inhunanely, treating women like whores and obstructing other people without letting them sleep.

I don’t know what the MMDA comprises, but Muslims SHOULD fight against child marriages. As the Quran says that an individual can only marry under the following conditions:

    1. Reached of age where he/she can take over control of his/her properties and

    2. Has the maturity of mind to take the solemn covenant of marriage. This solemn covenant is the same type of covenant taken by the prophets before God and also by the Children of Israel. It is a weighty oath and it is doubtful a child can take it.

Equal rights for woman and man is a misnomer. If it is true, man and woman sould be put together in all games including cricket and foot ball. Can a man get pregnant and bear children? A man can walk on the road with a pair of shorts only. Can a woman do this? Islam recognizes these physiological differences in each gender and attaches the rights and duties.

    • 3
      0

There are lots of things that men cannot do , what women can do. Apart from it, earlier women were not allowed to study and now look at the AL results and the University Entrance results. They are doing far better than men. Women are living longer than men.
Women are topping legal and medical professions.

Jayanthi K was the first Sri Lankan women to climb the Himalayas. There are so many other e.g. Most of the fetes are a matter of training. I can go on giving examples if necessary

You are taking funny and stupid examples – Men also cannot walk on the road without shorts.

Physiological differences does not allow men to have more rights like the right to divorce without giving a reason. See comments above by Miss Farook

      • 1
        0

If physiology is to decide on the rights, disabled folks would have separate rights. When men and women become elderly, they are feeble therefore they should have less rights. All men are not equal. Physically and mentally they are different. Some men are superior to some men and some women. Some women are superior to some women and some men. Women and men are not homogenous groups.

Muslims, particularly Muslim men want to portray that Muslim women are happy and Muslim men treat their women well. What they’re are angry now is that the women have come into the open and exposing how Islam is misused.
Discussion on MMDACT is focussing on child marriage but there are many other issues. A man has the right to divorce without giving reasons.A woman has to prove fault.A man can divorce a woman at any time and doesn’t have to give alimony. For a woman who doesn’t have an income or a house, this is a biggest threat to her.She can be a beggar within a short time. Is there a more cruel law than this. How many women are suffering because of the unilateral right to divorce given to men.

He can marry more than 4 wives by divorcing the previous wives.MMDAct is a archaic and an inhuman law.
MUSLIMS are fighting for equal treatment in the country but not treating their women equally. They are champions of human Rights but don’t give equal human rights to their women. They are resisting to change and using mosques to do this.

No wonder why the Sri Lankan Muslim men want to hold n to the MMDA.

It gives them privileges of a slave owner, and they can treat Sri Lankan Muslim women as slaves and chattel. There is no incentive for them to lose those privileges. They are taking cover and hiding under the religion of Islam, and as currently practiced, it is a violation of the constitutional rights of Sri Lankan Muslim women.

Amarasiri, asserts, based on data, that the Ulema and Mullah evolved from Primates with 48 chromosomes, and the Ulema and Mullahs have now 46 chromosomes, and their Chromosome # 2 was formed by the Fusion of two Primate Chromosomes.

Still living in the past feeding on the hoax? Granting GSP plus approval was never based on amendments to MMDA. In fact, they only ratification required was the 21 UN world conventions, which SL had always been a signatory. Some of which included labour regulations, manufactured products compete with other Int’l markets and human rights, which was in short supply under MR’s regime. Now that the country’s HR situation has vastly improved, the EU is reconsidering granting this preferential treatment afforded to only 13 other poor and least developed countries.

The Quran on Men and Women:

The Quran, in addressing the believers, often uses the expression, ‘believing men and women’ to emphasize the equality of men and women in regard to their respective duties, rights, virtues and merits. It says:

“For Muslim men and women, for believing men and women, for devout men and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient and constant, for men and women who humble themselves, for men and women who give in charity, for men and women who fast, for men and women who guard their chastity, and for men and women who engage much in Allah’s praise, for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward.” [Noble Quran 33:35]

This clearly contradicts the assertion of the Christian Fathers that women do not possess souls and that they will exist as sexless beings in the next life. The Quran says that women have souls in exactly the same way as men and will enter Paradise if they do good:

“Enter into Paradise, you and your wives, with delight.” [Noble Quran 43:70]

“Who so does that which is right, and believes, whether male or female, him or her will We quicken to happy life.” [Noble Quran 16:97]
The Prophet of Islam (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Women are the twin halves of men.” The Quran emphasizes the essential unity of men and women in a most beautiful simile:

“They (your wives) are your garment and you are a garment for them.” [Noble Quran 2:187]

Just as a garment hides our nakedness, so do husband and wife, by entering into the relationship of marriage, secure each other’s chastity. The garment gives comfort to the body; so does the husband find comfort in his wife’s company and she in his. “The garment is the grace, the beauty, the embellishment of the body, so too are wives to their husbands as their husbands are to them.” Islam does not consider woman “an instrument of the Devil”, but rather the Quran calls her Muhsana – a fortress against Satan because a good woman, by marrying a man, helps him keep to the path of rectitude in his life. It is for this reason that marriage was considered by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a most virtuous act. He said: “When a man marries, he has completed one half of his religion.” He enjoined matrimony on Muslims by saying: “Marriage is part of my way and whoever keeps away from my way is not from me (i.e. is not my follower).” The Quran has given the raison d’tre of marriage in the following words:

“And among His signs is this, that He has created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them; and He has put love and mercy between you. Verily in that are signs for those who reflect.” [Noble Quran 30:21]

The totally unrepresentative Muslim hierarchy (comprising of only men) want a referendum restricted only to Muslims, for the reform of MDDA. The results of this could be predicted but it would be meaningless. Please, let us all Sri Lankans be guided by just one set of laws for all, whatever your religion, class or creed.

What is meant by archaic group. Outmoded, Old fashioned etc. Then Hinduism is the most outdated, then Buddhism, next Christanity and next is Islam. Aethism is not listed as a religon but is actually the most old and oudated where people worship their own ego’s and even their own bodies by giving in to their basest desires.

So now the old women in the picture has become the whipping girl and is condemned for not exposing her breasts and private parts to the lecherous public gropers and sex perverts. So is this the way you give women rights by raping them in guest houses and on the beach etc. Shame.
