Sine Kampf: Smart Patriotism Is Fabricated History

Patriotism is fierce as a fever, pitiless as the grave, blind as a stone and as irrational as a head less hen.” – Ambrose Bierce –  Devils Dictionary

Smart patriotism is a smart contrivance of Dr.Dayan Jayatilleka. He has devised it as a means of appeasing the existential angst of the Sinhala majority in the south of Sri Lanka. He contextualizes it in Dravidian designs imagined as emanating from the southern shores of the sub-continent. Legend has Arahath Mahinda arriving in the island by Air. Archeological evidence suggests that he paused to rest somewhere near present day Kanyakumari.

Dr.Jayatilleka the historian informs us that ‘many times in Sinhala history’ Dravidian incursions ‘have been responsible for the collapse of the great hydraulic civilizations and the retreat of the capital”. He asserts “this is the geography and history of the Sinhalese”

This existential angst therefore dates back to the Kalinga Magha invasion in the 12th century that setup the capital of Polonnaruwa. Coincidentally and curiously his theory emerges in the wake of Polonnaruwa re-emerging as a power repository of a new President in the second decade of the 21th century.

A distinguished writer who later reached the pinnacle of power in his country by relying on history to foster national pride has told us how to read history.

“To study history means to search for and discover the forces that are the causes of those results which appear before our eyes as historical events. The art of reading and studying consists in remembering the essentials and forgetting what is not essential”

Mahinda LionThis writer narrates in his memoirs how he discovered the magic of history from his teacher. “Even to-day I cannot recall without emotion that venerable personality whose enthusiastic exposition of history so often made us entirely forget the present and allow ourselves to be transported as if by magic into the past. He penetrated through the dim mist of thousands of years and transformed the historical memory of the dead past into a living reality. When we listened to him we became afire with enthusiasm and we were sometimes moved even to tears.”

Recalling the nostalgic prose written a century earlier it was evident that the  remarkable document produced by Dr.Dayan Jayatileke is a sort of a Melian Monologue that explains the Manichean moral duality of the Mahinda Rajapakse regime. It is also an agitprop instrument aimed at the restoration of the Ancien Régime.

As the chief ideologue of the project to reestablish the ‘historical balance’ Dr.Jayatilleka has produced an exceptionally lucid glossary of currently relevant terms such as nation, patriotism, ethnicity and all of their variants.

The German writer who ‘Penetrated the dim mist of thousands of years and transformed the historical memory of the dead past in to living reality” called his magnum opus ‘Mein Kampf”. This writer would give Dayan’s work the title ‘Sein Kampf.’

The ‘Sein Kampf’ legitimizes  political and historical distortions that gained currency in the post conflict years 2010-2015. It was the overarching the Rajapaksa project to manufacture consent in the Sinhala South.

January 8th intercepted that process. For the first time since the Vadukkodai resolution the TULF and its allies now under the Tamil National Alliance insists on a collective ‘liberation’ from the tyranny of an autocrat who kept the cadaver of ‘Pirpaharan’ pickled in the public psyche stubbornly refusing to lighten the dead weight of a tortured past. Keeping Kalinga Magha of the 12th century is necessary to keep the 20th century abomination alive in that nether space of the ‘virtual’.

Dayan’s treatise on Patriotism resonates with a substantial segment of the Sinhala South. It may well hold or withhold the key to post conflict reconciliation. It would be injudicious to trivialize a treatise that was and is intended as the compass for a return voyage from ‘Elba’.

‘Patriotism’ derives its post Westphalian connotation from the phenomenon of Prussian Patriotism that encouraged the upheaval in France demanding Liberté, égalité and fraternité. It was this strange dichotomy that prompted Marx to deride Prussian patriotism with the wry observation “The state is too serious a business to be subjected to such buffoonery”!

The smart patriot considers a “Sri Lankan nation of which the Sinhala nation and Sinhala Buddhist culture and civilization are not recognized as the core” as “ridiculously artificial and dis-organic.”

Smart patriotism insists that “the Sinhala Buddhist people have central role conferred on them by history, culture, demography and democracy in creating a Sri Lankan nation which it cannot do on its own.”

Now this is Athens addressing Melos.“Consideration of right and wrong have never turned people from opportunities of self-aggrandizement offered by superior strength.”

The smart patriot therefore is convinced that conflict is the essence of human affairs and conduct. The Smart Patriot is secure in the conviction that self-interest overrides moral principles.

This writer is no Political scientist. It is presumed however that Political Science is the study of groups brought in to contact with each other. Does political science assume that when contact becomes conflict it is an animal phenomenon that defies human resolution?

The Sinhala centric smart patriotism is an aggressive patriotism which refuses to lower the boundaries that separate ‘us’ from ‘them’. That patriotism is a Fascist patriotism. The tragedy is that the so-called purist patriots are the trail blazers of the most pernicious cultural crelolization of the Sinhala people practiced in the five post war years.

Patriot and Patriotism: these and few other words should be used very carefully in any country where wars were fought. Even if srilanka war was not comparable to that of the germans, what people feel in post war scenarios are not far different. In Germany their press deliberately control from any of harmful words being used publicly. In 2006 only, they the Germans trusted to hang their national flags – that was also after the formal request made by then national soccer coach -Jürgen Klinsmann. As if nation’s (to put it better -Rajapakshe’s) one and only know-all character be DJ, him to use all the terms in his recent article, I think so moronic. Even today, after 65years since second world war is over – there are a large number of terms that germans intentionally avoid using in their new papers. Not to that level, but still we the srilankens too need to be warned not to abuse them for arbitory sake. I think all what DJ wants/wanted is him to be called – veteran analyst -Dayan Jayathilaka (Lol).

I beleive that Pollonaruwa was made the capital of Sri Lanka by King Vijayabahu after he defeated the Cholas in the tenth century. He consecrated himself in Anuradhapura but decided to use Pollonaruwa as his capital.
Also it should be noted that the cultural ,economical exchange between the Dravidian Kingdoms and Sri Lanka was beneficial to both parties. Why only talk about the attacks?

    DR DJ,

If you can, asnwer to Sarath De Alwis. He has concluded with the following:

“The Sinhala centric smart patriotism is an aggressive patriotism which refuses to lower the boundaries that separate ‘us’ from ‘them’. That patriotism is a Fascist patriotism. The tragedy is that the so-called purist patriots are the trail blazers of the most pernicious cultural crelolization of the Sinhala people practiced in the five post war years.”

If you are smart let alone being smart patriot, have a go at responding to this article!

I find it hard to understand how the Lankan situation can be compared to the German mein kampf situation. For in Germany, Jews spoke and acted like Germans and were greatly desiring to fit into the culture of Germany. They were distinguished only by their religion and monetary and intellectual success. They had no giant mother-country bordering Germany to laision with, so culture and flow of ideas would give them greater intensity of power.

Sri Lanka however, seeks to protect her majority from too pure and intense a Dravadian culture as opposed to her Dravidio-Aryan culture generated 2 millenia ago, as per Buddhist philosophy of equality of all castes (which meant race in those times), and regenerated over the time-span till now, to produce the Sinhala race (never mind the 1% Sinhala Buddhist who attempt to declare racial purity in competition with the Dravadian purity).

Therefore, if there are any “creolized” Sinhala persons nowadays (no tragedy at all), they must speak up and lay claim to their pride and honor of being the new generation of neo-Sinhalese that will lead our country into the brave new world of Sinhala-Buddhist heritage and culture that will give endurance and anchorage to the unique geography, climate, and human and spiritual resources of our Island.

“Patriotism is fierce as a fever, pitiless as the grave, blind as a stone and as irrational as a head less hen”.

yet witless like a masquerading joker.
