Sinhala Fundamentalism Tries A Fast One-Once Again

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Writing to The Colombo Telegraph, Sharmini Serasinghe, well-known journalist, has this to say:

“It is indeed ironic and tragically hilarious, that while Sri Lanka boasts of a 2500 year-old culture, and one of the highest literacy rates in Asia (the ability to read and write), those claiming relationship to a four-legged beast (lion) today; its ‘Sinha-Le’ tribe, is unable to separate allegory and myth, from fact. After all, the ability to read and write doesn’t guarantee intelligence, common sense or wisdom, does it?

What is most hilarious is that, by claiming bloodline to a beast, they are also admitting to being subhuman, the qualities of which, they have no qualms about displaying unashamedly, in the public arena. Is this what our 2500 year-old culture has produced?”

Sharmini picks the latest searing slogan in Sri Lanka: “Sinha Le” (blood of the Sinha or lion). It is not really the latest. It is, rather an old war cry of the fundamentalist mindset.

To a people who have restricted economic opportunities around to seize and grow personally this kind of war cry does appeal from time to time. In wealthy countries like Australia individuals are too busy working in profitable ventures and seeking chances to enrich themselves and their families and trying to enjoy the good life that comes in its wake.

On the other hand, most Sri Lankans have plenty of time to waste and hang around. As prosperity grows in a country its people find their horizons widen and they tend to realise that even in a finite world there is room for everyone to practice the common social life-sustaining philosophy of “live and let live.”

On the other hand, there are “opportunities” of a different sort for leaders who stir the primordial clannish passions of their followers. Such leaders come from typically lower middle class persons who have the ambition to move up the class ladder by seeking political power and the uplifting social levers that such power brings. Once reaching their political positions such persons who are devoid of talent to make wealth by their own business acumen, take the option of eking income from the successful business classes. They become parasites on those who have genuinely made it to the top. These politicians when ensconced in power utilise their positions of power in order to rip off commissions and bribes from suppliers in business. The political elite become a new class of parasites preying on businesses.

This state of affairs has been developing for some decades in Sri Lanka but under the regime of Mahinda Rajapaksa the new parasitic class grew exponentially given the fact that Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family looked the other way when corruption allegations surfaced. Now that he is out of power there are scandalous allegations about Mahinda and his family. How much of such charges would be proved is yet to be seen but the mere conduct of the regime during its ten year rule left much suspicion and conjecture. For instance, the agencies responsible for ensuring accountability of government were brought under the President’s control by the 18th Amendment and that tragic act dismantled checks and balances on executive power. Under the umbrella of executive power even politicians in rural areas shared spoils and abused power.

With the single most dominant party, the United National Party, sticking to its original ideology of a multicultural united nation the parasitic political class seeks more and more to lean on the narrow ideology of fundamentalist Sinhala Buddhism as its line of strategy to garner votes. The silence of Mahinda Rajapaksa both in power and out over the antics of the BBS and its rowdy saffron leader, Galagoda Atte Gnanasara, is indicative of where his ideological stand is and where his strategy lies.

There is little doubt that the Sinha Le moment is tailored to gather votes for another Mahinda comeback effort. BBS and the broader Sinha Le campaign will march separately and come together. Slogans are on the walls in public places with Sinha Le cries. Hired and fooled media personnel work day and night to try and create an avalanche out of these sectarian sentiments. Similarly hired and fooled “intellectuals,” have come to the dance of the devils. Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a public speech named these accompanying orchestra.

Such violence-prone forces aren’t interested in what happens to the future of the island. They try, as was done in the past to fan fear among the Tamil population. Such fear and anxiety can only generate Tamil extremism and Tamil militancy thereby setting the stage for another civil war. Back to square one.

And what of the ordinary people who are being canvassed like this? As Sharmini Serasinghe points out, our possession of a high literacy rate does not guarantee a common sense or a critical perspective among the people. Our people have many times in the past failed to pick the fake from the real. The Sinha Le people rely on the gullibility of its mass audiences. As the quoted passage at the start says Sinha Le is not real but phoney. It is meant to dupe and win.

Will they succeed in this new prank?

Shaymon once you come of out of your pot induced stupor you will realize BBS was a western funded project (Norway) that helped immensely to polarize the minority muslim community against Mahinda Rajapaksa. It is the same powers that are using them again. Mahinda never benefited from the BBS it is MY3 and Ranil who benefited. It is in their interest now the keep the BBS alive. So instead of just heaping garbage on Mahinda Rajapaksa see for yourself who is promoting BBS.

      Patriot the fool,

BBS is western funded! You do really thank that the others are fools like! The racists like you are the real bane of Sri Lanka. You will never allow the country to progress. The Sinhala Buddhists fundamentalists are worse than anything bad one saw in Sri Lanka!

“The Sinhala Buddhists fundamentalists are worse than anything bad one saw in Sri Lanka!”

Burning Issue – It is known that “kona kepeema” leads to burning sensation. Don’t mind your disguise, read the following and write back as to who is giving our country a bad name through terrorism.

Australian counter-terrorism police have raided two homes in in the outer-northern Melbourne suburbs of Meadow Heights and Craigieburn. linked to a Sri Lankan-born Australian national, 41 year old Mohomed Unais Mohomen Ameen who appeared in a propaganda video for the Islamic State (IS). The two raided homes are believed to be those of Ameen’s two wives.

Ameen fled to Syria in 2014 and claims in the propaganda video that he is now working for the IS. In an IS video he appeals to tothers, “We need the brothers and sisters to come and help us from all around the world.”

Shyamon, Sarmini and other wannabe “broad minded” can shut their eyes to this menace. But true Sinhala Buddhists will not.

So learn to suck it Thambi.

“broad minded” can shut their eyes to this menace. But true Sinhala Buddhists will not”

By your own admission broad mindedness is not a virtue

so the answer to the Islamic menace ( not that it doesn’t exist ) is to start your own version of BS ( Buddhist state fundamentalist ) and be prepared to cut throats of infidels specially those whose top has been cut. Surely you need the help of branded true Sinhala Buddhist brothers and sisters,
because the ” non-religion ” but religious type such as the ‘awakened one’ would not go that far.

        Dear Lankan,

        You ask,

“BBS was a western funded project (Norway)” So we keep hearing. Any real proof, or is it a case of a lie being repeated enough times?

The real proof is as follows:

        1. If anything bad happens in Sri Lanka, it is always due to some westerners including the Tamil diaspora and muslims. : – Axiom No. 3 in SL Chinthanawa. (to be read with Axiom 3.1: All non sinhala-buddhists are westerners)

        2. BBS is bad :- Because it did not help MR to win. (If anything does not help MR to win, it is bad: Axiom No. 8 in SL Chinthanawa )

        3. BBS happened in SL. ( You have to trust the SL media on this point)

Axioms are self evident truths and if they are not evident to you, you are not genuine – you are some para – or you have sold out to some para.

RE: Sinhala Fundamentalism Tries A Fast One-Once Again

Can you write about the National Anthem Language?

This is the Land of the Native Veddah Aethho, not Paras.

The National Anthem should be sung in the Language of the Native Veddah Aethho, who have lived in the Land longer than the Illegal Paras.

The National flag should REFLECT the Native Veddah Aethho, and not the Paras.

The Paras are just Guests in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

The Paras are very welcome to get back to their home in India, Maha Bharaytaya!

News from the Grape Vine, Bulath Vine, Vettila Vine of the Paras, given below.

The Cabinet is reportedly divided over the opinion on the proposal to sing the National Anthem both in Sinhala and Tamil languages at the National Independence Day event this time, it is learnt.

A committee working on national reconciliation has proposed this to the Cabinet yesterday. However, a section of the Ministers was opposed to the idea. Therefore, a final decision was not taken.

The committee has made such a proposal in the hope that it would be a step forward in the direction of bringing about reconciliation among the ethnic groups. Currently, the National Anthem is sung in Tamil, mainly at events in the Tamil speaking areas.

After the ministers exchanged their views in this respect, President Maithripala Sirisena said he would decide on it after discussing it with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

He also asked the Ministers not to talk about it any further.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne are among those who stood for the National Anthem to be sung in both the languages.

During the previous rule, then National Languages and Social Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara proposed a bilingual national anthem to be worked out and it led to a controversy at that time, prompting the Public Administration Ministry to issue a circular how the National Anthem should be sung.

Here comes the spokesperson for the anti SB Yahapalana Geriatric Faction, to give a helping hand to Ms Shamini, to boost her Molotov Cocktail attacks on our Dalit Sinhal- Le. .

Our poor Dalits have been through enough misery in the first Yahapalana 12 Months.

Their staple high Tin Bread even has gone up by a few more Yahapalana Rupees for a loaf.

Our Village folk who earned a quid by shoveling dirt on Chinese donated roads are now on Plain Tea only ..

But the latest press release from Poorten’s mate from Tumpane , the Yahapalana heavy Kirielle says the UNP will clean sweep the soon to be held Mini Elections.

He goes even further to say that the Village people are lining up for miles to join the UNP.

( wonder whether Malwatta Chief pays their membership fees ? )

Why the hell is then does Kirra’s Leader Batalanda Ranil lose it in Parliament?.

And use even dirty words to attack good honest Journalists who happen to be Sinhala Buddhists. and talk about the plight of fellow SBs’ plight under Yahapalnaya.

And threaten the BBS and the Monks that he will bring even 10,000 Yahapalana suckers from Colombo to attack our Village Dalits, if they converge in Homagama Courts, when the Magistrate fronts up on the 9 Feb, after the forced vacation.

These are very dangerous times in Lanka.
The Mahinda Jarapassa family knows that the net is closing in on them and they will make every attempt to UNLEASH CHAOS in Lanka before they are held ACCOUNTABLE and PUNISHED for their CORRUPTION, CRIMINALITY and LOOTING of the public monies.
Politicians in Lanka always use RACISM and RELIGIOUS HATE SPEECH to engineer RIOTS, VIOLENCE and SOCIAL UNREST to cover up their crimes. Ranil Wickramasinghe and CBK must formulate a COMMUNICATION STRATEGY to EDUCATE the people on this.
    1. If the $3 billion stashed away in the Jarapassa family’s secret bank accounts over seas had remained in Sri Lanka there would be no economic crisis and the Rupee would not be crashing.

Recovering the $3 Billion to that was stolen by Jarapassa family, rather than borrowing from the IMF which is a rotten Capitalist organization is the solution to Lanka’s economic crisis. The IMF turns a blind eye to Financial Crime and corruption and has institutionalised financial Crimes in the Global South, because the looted funds of Southern DIctoators like Jarapassa boost the economies of the western world in the world while spreading inequality and poverty globally. The Kaiser Report on Russian TV (RT) constantly exposes this.

    2. Ranil also needs to get rid of the corrupt insider trader at the Central bank, Arjuna Mahendran must be tried for financial crimes and former Clown of Central Bank NIvard Cabraal too.

“The silence of Mahinda Rajapaksa both in power and out over the antics of the BBS and its rowdy saffron leader, Galagoda Atte Gnanasara, is indicative of where his ideological stand is and where his strategy lies.”

There is no silence, MR has clearly said that he supports the saffron robed ‘rowdy” when he compared his arrest with that of Hirunika MP. MR committed sin by building his personal family wealth at the expense of deprived and poor families with the connivance of MPs bought over with 100s of ministerial posts and his relatives bribed with perks and jobs. He was humiliated twice by the very electorates elevated him to the highest office and his popularity is on the decline, on a sliding scale. Karma is such that it catches the one who committed it either by the neck or if he stretches to the limit by the balls. He hasn’t learnt his lesson yet so he will be caught third time by the latter. Until then he will go on unashamedly to the ultimate humiliation. Another ‘strong’ but brilliant Mrs Margaret Thatcher was humiliated by British electorate even though she won 3 general elections.

For the government to take the right path, it is important to extricate xenophobia against Tamils, existing within the Sinhhala supremacists in the parliament. Their fear, if not pretended, against the fantacy of separtism in SL is ridiculous and is with lack of knowledge.

These Sinhala supremacists should be told and made to understand that Federalism is not separation. America, has 52 fedreral states and not 52 separate
countries. It has existed so for more than 200 years.

SWRD Bandaranayake, in State Council, advoccated Federalism. Later SJV asked for it. Now, TNA is asking what SJV asked. where is seapartism?

Buddhist Sinhale Fundamentalism is nothing new in Sri lankan politics. Unfortunately both UNP and SLFP used and promoted this extremism throughout the period since 1948. It started with the The Sinhala only act of SWRD, the march of JR Jeyawardena to Dalada Maligawa in protest of Banda-Chelva pact and now Mahinda Rajapakse is using the same sadly with the support of leftist leaders. Even Maithiri or Ranil are not prepared to talk or challenge against Buddhist Sinhale fundamentalism, its brutal violent actions which are against the core principle of Buddhism and humanity.

I am sure if the politicians are prepared to challenge fundamentalism people will give their support but it is our opportunistic politicians are not prepared to challenge the fundamentalism.

Shyamon, what you and Sharmini should take note of is the root cause which is accumulation of unnecessary power with the parliamentarians. If the powers were correctly distributed with statutory bodies and allocated policy making powers to the parliamentarians, then such events would not have occurred. However, still it is not too late, if the corrections are made in the new Constitution, the administrative system may self correct the errors.

It is surprising why Sri Lankans lack so much common sense. Just imagine the state of affairs if there was no Buddhism. May be there would not have been any problem.

Communalism is a mass reaction to inappropriate statements by politicians and half baked middle classes. What this country needs is justice for all. For instance allowing Saudi Arabia the instigator of islamic fundamentalism to invest in the east amongst the muslim communities has repercussions amongst the other communities. To brand and denigrate the natural fears is a sign of the time that is aggravating communal feelings. Fight for justice and fair play for every body, do not allow outsiders to interfere in the communal interactions. This country has become a joke the rulers of this country allowed outsiders to interfere , India and the west takes the side of the Tamils, The Arabs takes the side of muslims the Sinhalese have no one to back them. No wonder Sinhale has arrived at our doorstep . For god sake these so called do gooders must shut up and demand non interference in the internal affairs of this country.

“The Arabs takes the side of muslims the Sinhalese have no one to back them.”

The Sinhalese have Hindia the guardian angel. If you consider yourself as the Aryan Master race even the Aryan’s (?) scared to sympathise with you.

Why do you worry when you have all the Sinha le smart ass patriots MR, Gota, Dayan, Wimal, Vasu, Gamanpilla, Dinesh, …… on your side? They can single handedly deal with any super power.

“For god sake these so called do gooders must shut up and demand non interference in the internal affairs of this country.”

Vas is generally a Karawa surname so this means you are a one of these Demalays who were imported to the island by the Portuguese from South India and have recently become Sinha ley and like many of these Demalay turned Sinha lay South Indian imports now beating the anti Tamil drum. The west and India are trying to do something on behalf of the Tamils, only because many Demalay turned Sinhalay yakkas like you, now making up the vast majority of the Sinhaley want to kill and commit genocide on the island’s Tamil as they are all drunk with some Mahavamsa myth. Arabs or also take the side of the island’s Tamil Muslim population for the same reason. Why this Kolai veri. If you Sinha lay do not succumb to this animal Kolai veri to kill the island’s Tamil speaking population ( the Tamils and the Tamil Muslims) treat them with the respect they deserve no one will interfere. They have the same right to the island as you.

My native land is Jaffna, whereas the country of origin of your recently migrated Karawa slave ancestors is Tamil Nadu and Kerala. These two Indian states are the country of origin of the vast majority of the present day Tamil hating Sinha ley supporting now Sinhalese speaking largely low caste imported Indian Tamil morons like you.
Low breed I am a Brahmin a low caste meat eating Karawa like you will never be allowed anywhere near my home or my sight.

If you are a Brahamin behave like one. It looks as if you are a remnant of the Tamils brought by the dutch for the tobacco cultivations and converted to catholicism . Most catholics are low caste not brahmins. That explains it all.I do not dwell in casteism but you are barking up the wrong tree.

              2

I know the truth hurts and you are squealing like a pig and resorting to personal insults. However you have picked the wrong Tamil.
I Am behaving exactly like a twice born Brahmin behaves towards a low born Karawa slave import from South India, that is now beating the anti Tamil drum.
Have you been back to the fishing villages of Kerala or southern Tamil Nadu from where the ancestors of the present day Sinhalese Karawa were imported to the island a few centuries ago? You should you recently Sinhalised low born South Indian slave import.
The Dutch did import hundreds of thousands of low caste South Indian indentured labour/slaves from the Coramandel coast Tamil Nadu. However only a very small fraction of them were settled in Jaffna or in the north to work as labourers for the Vellalah landlords. They got assimilated into the Pariah caste and they hardly converted to Catholicism, as it was only the Portuguese who were Catholics not the Dutch ruling classes. So get your facts correct before you post porkies and falsehoods. Understood Karawa from South India.
More than 99% of these South Indian indentured labour that was imported by the Dutch were settled in the huge cinnamon plantations in the south of the island and the descendants of these low caste Indian Tamil labourers are the Sinhalese Salagamma and Durwa. Another bunch of recently Sinhaliesed Indian Tamils, who just like you, to hide their recent lowly immigrant Indian Tamil origin, are the biggest supporters of the Sinhalese Aryan myth, the Mahavamsa fairy tale and the biggest anti Tamils. Oh just look at you. A treat, howling screaming and frothing from your mouth, as you post your personal insults about me. Poor pathetic Tamil hating low born Karawa whose ancestors are ironically Tamil.
Funny all these recently Sinhalised largely low caste South Indian Tamil imports like you, have now become the pure sons of the soil and state the indigenous Eelam Tamil from the north and east don’t belong and are asked to go to South India. To the very same place that the ancestors of these recently Sinhalised low caste South Indian wankers ancestors arrived from a few generations ago.

“Will they succeed in this new prank?” asks Shyamon J – a regular contributor who writes and thinks intelligently. That is why this able ex-Civil Servant/Lawyer has chosen refuge Down Under. The land of Sinha Le is no place for educated, thinking and liberal Lankans. Only grovelling “officials” survived under the Rajapakse reign.

The answer to the Question is “Why not? If Mrs.B came to power cheating the people in 1970 on the “rice from the moon” trickery and
the Rajapakses won and survived on the non-existent “Tamil, Tamilnadu and Indian threat” It does not take much to fool most of our 21 million yakkos. There certainly are intelligent Sinhalese – Buddhists, Christians – but they are in the minority. So long as the Sinhala majority wallows in the mud like meeharak (buffaloes) they will be lead by shenanigan cut-throats like the Rajapakses, Gandassara Thera, Booruwans and the lot – in the name of “Sinha Le, Jaathiya, Aagama” and what not.

I hate to say this, but all signs are Sri Lanka is doomed to suffer for many more decades – because of religious extremism and scheming rogue politicians.

Look who has come to the defence of Gnanasara the mad monk. It is none other than Rajapaksa who claimed that he lost the election because of Gnanasara. The old hora Rajapaksa sees an opportunity to amass some support among the sinha le by whipping up sinhala racism in cahoots with Gnanasara.

Why the government has not exposed these undesirable elements in the political arena as what they really are: racist opportunists craving to get back on the centre stage.

Sri Lanka is not used to peace as our history shows. After the 30-year war they don’t know how to live in peace and once again we are at each other’s throat. The government is shirking its responsibilities and spends its resources on trying to find Rajapaksha’s Ali Baba caves and Ekneligoda while an unfortunate lot on wheel chairs ponder their folly of sacrificing their limbs and eyes for a lost cause while some others (as seen here) splitting polemics of their two cent’s worth eating Kiri Bath with folks and spoons and talking their own brand of Singlish in some foreign land. A war cannot be won with peace as history has shown us. This is the bitter truth of war. (This is how Machiavelli still remains a powerful inspiration to our modern day leaders) In India national anthem is sung only in Hindi, not in any other language.

“In India national anthem is sung only in Hindi, not in any other language.”

You are well informed. Thanks for enlightening us with your new and improved information on India. When Wimal Weerawansa authoritatively confirmed Indian national anthem is sung in Hindi, none of believed him.

Sice you have confirmed what Wimal believed, the Indian government has a duty to find someone who could translate Indian national anthem from Bengali to Hindi.

India has too many languages for the national anthem to be sung in many languages. Each state has its own anthem. However in countries where there are only a few linguistic groups tow or three. The national anthem is sung in all the national official languages. So what is the problem for the Sinhalese if the national anthem is sung in Tamil? The Tamil language and the Tamil people have to the same right to the island as the Sinhalese in fact the Tamil history in the island is far more older. Using a Mahavamsa fable to justify and deny the Tamil people their rights by a Sinhalese population that is now largely descended from low caste Indian Tamil immigrant imports will not work. Weerawansa belongs to the Berewa caste that is descended from the Tamil Pariahs. The Berewas beat the Bera that is the Parai or Para Melam in Tamil

While Shaymon and Sharmaine are rolling out Heavy artillery to attack our poor Sinhala Buddhists, their Religion and their Culture, the ex guardian of all that and Urumaya too, is busy building the Magapolis.

When a Journo asked him Why Megapolis?.

The answer he got is classic.

Colombo has 1000 Beggars, 16,000 Stray Dogs and 68,000 Slum Dwellers.

And Champika wants to turn the whole Western Province into the Megapolis.

What a brilliant concept, What a marvelous project.

    I am soo happy..

No beggars or stray dogs or slum dwellers in Wella Gardens.

Wonder how much it will add to my little 2 BR pad on Marine Drive..In Capital appreciation of course with our Singapore CB boss paying nearly 150 Yahapalana LKR to a Dollar..

I know Venerable Rathne is now a full blown UNP MP which wouldn’t go down well with the anti SB Faction represented by Shaymon and Sharmaine.

Rathne should in fact encourage his one time Abiththaya on this Megapolis as it is going to be the Elite Federal State of Srilanka after the new Yahapalana constitution kicks in.

Writer, is not a Sinhalese or a Buddhist though he has taken a name from Sri Lanka. From his argument it is obvious he is a “Para Singhalayek” whose ancestors have supported Portuguese in order to obtain undue favors. The family members are known traitors of Sri Lanka. Best is to ignore these fellows yet I would like to point out there is nothing known as Sinhala Fundamentalists, It is like saying American Fundamentalists, English Fundamentalists or French Fundamentalists. Sinhalese are Sinhalese there aren’t anyone known as Sinhala Fundamentalists.”Rose is a rose” This man needs to understand the application of the word under right context. Obviously he is not a Sinhala man who can be proud of his ancestry.

Do a lot of these Sinhaley supporters realise that they are not descended from Sinha Ley but from Demaley who migrated to the island from ancient medieval and quite recently and that the so called Sinha ley only became a majority thanks to the Portuguese and Dutch colonials importing hundreds of thousands of low caste Demaley coolies and indentured labour from South India and settling them along the western and southern littorals to become Sinhaley in a within a few centuries. Also due to the British declaring that many Demaley living along the western coast are not Demaley but Sinha ley. This process accelerated after independence.
Now all this Demaley turned Sinhaley are beating the anti Tamil drum and proudly stating that they are all part animal and descended from some lion that raped a hapless damsel in some dark and dangerous North Indian forest as the Gothic fairy tale called Mahavamsa told them so and want to appease this part animal instinct by devouring all the non Sinhaley population in the island.

Malinda Senevirtane says he is against Sinha Le and also against those who bash Sinha le. What a contradiction? This guy went shopping for Rajapakse and now failed to become a media advisor to Sirisena. He has therefore begun a tirade against the government.
PM says there are some Brahmins in the media mafia. Malinda tried to be one but remained a vasalaya. Same with Dayan Jaytilleka
