Sirisena Hits Out At Police For Raiding Kumar Welgama’s Estate

President Maithripala Sirisena has hit out at the police for carrying out a search operation at the Matugama estate of UPFA MP Kumar Welgama.

“I don’t know who had done it, if it was the CID or the FCID, but this is immature and the people will laugh at such acts,” Sirisena had reportedly told the Lankadeepa.

Sirisena went on to point out that if the police had received reports that anyone was keeping vehicles in an illegal manner then there were ‘appropriate’ methods to verify if it was correct instead of resorting to immature methods.

Early this week, a special investigations unit searched the residence of Welgama for bullet proof vehicles. The search was carried out based on a complaint the police has received claiming that Welgama had been keeping bulletproof vehicles in his residence illegally. However, no such vehicles were found.

Soon after the incident, the Joint Opposition expressed their protest against the search operation with Joint Opposition MP Bandula Gunawardena saying Welgama who had obtained over 200,000 votes from the people should not be treated as a criminal. Welgama is scheduled to raise the matter in parliament citing ‘privilege issue’.

That’s what old mates are for. Even if a ‘Tiger’ changes mountain, the ‘Spots’ will remain. Do all ‘Presidents’ act like this in other parts of the world? I doubt it.

Your comments of the day make me laugh from my both sides.

Anyway why to spit on looking up…. were you reborn yestreday ? Had we had any freedom of speech prior to 8th Jan 2016. I am also against all investigations being turned out to snail paces, but for one single reason, Mr Gamaralas to have come forward in terms of vehemently go for drive away Rajapakshes and the diverse risks taken by him that way -only for that reason, I worship Mr. Gamarala morning to evening I dont mind him being from a rural background. What matters is crush the head of Rajakshes atleast ot someextent until the stupid folks realize the truth. I happeneed to visit lanka in the NOv 2014 -NOW i COMPARE my travel today… there is a big change. No more show off acts. Both parties let criticisms. Even he the president is being key man to criticise and being criticised. The kind of discussion culture is given a life….. even coconut pickers add their thougts … free as had not been the case before his start.

This talkative man places and grades him as above anyone else. That alone makes him and his nature.
We remember, that his support was not given to the current govt, was the only man had guts to stand up share it, latter is somewhat unique among the men gathered to JO today though. However this man is reported to be one another foul mouth in the high days of Rajaakshe. We remember the manner he once made sexist abusive talks to former MP -Rosi senanayake.
Like we have no other good politicians, these men to have allowed to become what they are today – was done nobody else, Meeharaka Rajaakshe.
I simply dont see any wrong in searching his place for hidden vehicles or anything hidden dead bodies to be honest.
Law and order should be served equal to all. basta.

This bad mouth was no better to Mervin appu in the high days of Athigaru.

But just becasue the one to be the single man to stand and say, no he is against the current consensual politics stood him out within their bunch.

But if one would measure the nature of abusiveness, this man would also belong to the category of all high crooks of the party.

So, I dont think just vsiit of cops damage his so called image in that area.

If Rajaakshes can be called by FCID or CID, why not the kind of low lives be visited by Police ?

These men should finally know who they really are.

Right or wrong regarding this search, I don’t agree with Gunawardana’s assertion that a person who polled 200K should not be treated as a common criminal. The police has not treated him as a criminal; his estate has been searched and nothing wrong with it.

I think the police should act without any favor whatever rank the suspect is. Gunawardana well and truely explained the SLK MPs and ministers minset that they should be exempted from the application of law enforcement process as it should be. With experience from the last few years, and the way MPs have demonstrated their lack of discipline when it comes to behaving as law abiding citizens, the public view that the so called representatives of the people are the worst citizens. They erroenously think they are superior persons above the law.

That is not the case in western countries and other respected democracies, where MPs are equal to everyone else in front of the law.

When Mervin had tied a govt. servant to tree, MY3 concluded that it was a staged drama. He knows how to conduct inquiries. He thinks politicians are above the law. MR, RW, MY3 all have shown their true colours. Now it is time for voters to look for alternate leadership.

Sirisena should practice what he preaches and stop “resorting to immature methods” and be Presidential instead of interfering with those who are trying to do their jobs.

This man have got hundreds of millions by way of kickbacks for SLTB bus spare parts imported from India together with a former cricketer and a wheeler dealer.

The high profile 125Million customs bribery case was also part of that bus spare parts scandal and finally those 3 offiers got caught for asking 125Million and around 1000 million earned by this man and his nexus went unnoticed.

      Wonder of Asia.

We never trust anyone from previous regime. It was architect by CBK.Our doubt was reasonable and now it is crystal clear. Our hopes for a better country and good governance will not fade away with this kind of coward act by the MS.It is time for us to go beyond our comfort zones to completely abolish this kind of executive presidency and establish a rule of law. President must keep his hands away from judicial matters and should not interfere in law enforcement authorities at any level. That is not his duty.

President is absolutely right. If a law enforcement agency intend to investigate a missing vehicle there are enough mkdern technology available such as GPS etc to locate it. Sending police to a premises was done 100 years ago.

These are done by the UNP to achieve a dual objective. On the one hand they want to break the SLFP by humiliating former leaders while on the other hand they want to appease the UNP ers who want action by creating such illusions / circuses with the help of conartists.

Some idiots get hooked into these bogus operandi. No wonder Sri Lanka remain a developing country in spite of such a large literacy rate. My foot.

It’s now best if the President takes over the the running of the Bribery Commission and now the Police Dept – since he seems to know best how these institutions are to be run. Give him a few more days and he will no doubt add to the list.

Bribery Commission-1st kick into his own goal!

Police Dept:2nd kick into his own goal!

A few more kicks into his own goal and His Accidency will qualify for the stipulated amount of Star Points for Impeachment.
The likes of Kumar Welgama can then say Ammata Udu!
Eventually, like Aiyo,Ammata Udu will also find its way into the English Oxford Dictionary!

The president got bellyful from the public and civil societies in the
last incident where he berated the FCID for having questioned the so
called ‘war heroes’ in public and people thought he will stop criti-
cizing the actions of the law enforcement officers there after, but sadly he continues interfering in their duties. The DG,Bribery commi-
ssion meekly surrendered her resignation letter to much rejoice of
Jnt. opposition and other culprits who are to be netted by FCID.95%
of the cases investigated by the FCID/CID are completed but put on
hold due Govt. interference. It looks like as who will and who will
not face the charges, will be decided by the govt.

The law enforcement officials are trained in this field and work on intelligence they receive and they have succeeded in many cases in getting the culprits to books , specially in drug cases where some high ranking parliamentarians are involved and many billions of rupees are involved. We could see FCID and other law enforcement officers will
fold soon or act on the whims and fancies of the President, PM and the
ministers, like what happened in the last regime.
It is a sad situation for the country as other independent organiza-
tions like the Civil Commission, Judiciary and many other organizations
will fall in line.In this case, its a silly argument the Jnt.opposition
brought that he got 200,000 votes in the last election, hence the police
should tread into his areas. They should realise that there are many other MPs who secured more votes who are in the net. The latest twist by the President, the architect of 19th amendment, which gave powers
to independent organizations to act alone, is to undercut PM Ranil’s
influence in these departments as FCID/CID were going full speed ahead
in netting the culprits w/o interference by PM ,who overlooks these departments and now their wings are to be clipped and the culprits will
have lesser fear of getting behind the bars.
