President Maithripala Sirisena has hit out at the police for carrying out a search operation at the Matugama estate of UPFA MP Kumar Welgama.
“I don’t know who had done it, if it was the CID or the FCID, but this is immature and the people will laugh at such acts,” Sirisena had reportedly told the Lankadeepa.
Sirisena went on to point out that if the police had received reports that anyone was keeping vehicles in an illegal manner then there were ‘appropriate’ methods to verify if it was correct instead of resorting to immature methods.
Early this week, a special investigations unit searched the residence of Welgama for bullet proof vehicles. The search was carried out based on a complaint the police has received claiming that Welgama had been keeping bulletproof vehicles in his residence illegally. However, no such vehicles were found.
Soon after the incident, the Joint Opposition expressed their protest against the search operation with Joint Opposition MP Bandula Gunawardena saying Welgama who had obtained over 200,000 votes from the people should not be treated as a criminal. Welgama is scheduled to raise the matter in parliament citing ‘privilege issue’.
