President Maithripala Sirisena has effectively brushed aside objections expressed by a group of civil society activists and gone ahead with the appointment of Dayan Jayatilleka as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia.
According to the President’s Media Unit, 10 new Ambassadors and High Commissioners have been appointed to various missions. They are: Prof Arusha Cooray (Norway), Dayan Jayatilleka (Russia), M.M Jafeer (Brazil), M.A.K. Girihagama (Canada), S.A.H.M. Wijeratne (Poland), S.S. Ganegamaarachchi (Sweden), S.S. Premawardena (Vietnam), Anuruddha Kumara Mallimarachchi (South Africa), Austin Fernando (India) and Noordeen Mohammed Shahid (Pakistan).
Earlier, as Colombo Telegraph reported, a group of civil society activists petitioned the High Post Committee of Parliament to reject Jayatilleka’s nomination on multiple grounds. They argued that ‘Jayatilleka’s ideology and the ideology that shaped the January 8 2015 movement for change are poles apart’ and claimed that he ‘has denounced the very concept of Yahapalanaya and members of this administration.’ Jayatilleka has since rebutted the arguments of the 94 petitioners and 14 organizations.

The committee of high posts cleared DJ for appointment despite civil society objections. So who snubbed the civil society first? After such clearance by a Parliamentary body, consisting of members from a number of political parties, why must the President of the country have a different view? I am not sure what I read, but it sounded like there is still an “if” condition on Thero’s appointment. That was confirmed by last, defending essay by Thero. Normally, his essays were nasty attacks. But this one was much more humbled. It sounded like he wrote to enhance the chance and he didn’t want to spoil it by being entangled with the NGOs and they retaliate immediately.

Freshmen are molested by seniors as if it is a crime to be selected to enter university, what is more ridiculous is that these atrocities are committed by fellows who have had the privilege of being in the university already.
To this end the seniors dedicate a lot of their time and energy and go to great lengths to come up with ingenious ideas to suffer and humiliate fellow students. This is our mindset generally. Do maximum damage to those around us and enjoy that. This is a small example I am giving to illustrate how we put eachother through unspeakable stress enjoy ourselves in the most twisted of ways.

It is entirely the fault of the civil society members because the petition they sent was written in English. Was a Sinhala translation appended to that petition? It is extremely unlikely that this was done.
Quite sometime ago, a person I know visited a department of the Kandy Municipal Council to get a sticky problem sorted out. The Head of the Department was a Sinhala lady. Just before this person went in, the peon in that office warned him, “Just don’t speak to that woman in English as that will really annoy her and she will simply refuse to do your job!” This person was careful to heed the advice and got his work done.
