President Maithripala Sirisena has effectively brushed aside objections expressed by a group of civil society activists and gone ahead with the appointment of Dayan Jayatilleka as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia.
According to the President’s Media Unit, 10 new Ambassadors and High Commissioners have been appointed to various missions. They are: Prof Arusha Cooray (Norway), Dayan Jayatilleka (Russia), M.M Jafeer (Brazil), M.A.K. Girihagama (Canada), S.A.H.M. Wijeratne (Poland), S.S. Ganegamaarachchi (Sweden), S.S. Premawardena (Vietnam), Anuruddha Kumara Mallimarachchi (South Africa), Austin Fernando (India) and Noordeen Mohammed Shahid (Pakistan).
Earlier, as Colombo Telegraph reported, a group of civil society activists petitioned the High Post Committee of Parliament to reject Jayatilleka’s nomination on multiple grounds. They argued that ‘Jayatilleka’s ideology and the ideology that shaped the January 8 2015 movement for change are poles apart’ and claimed that he ‘has denounced the very concept of Yahapalanaya and members of this administration.’ Jayatilleka has since rebutted the arguments of the 94 petitioners and 14 organizations.

I do not think that there is anything sensitive about the relationship with Russia that will be jeopardized by DJ’s appointment of for that matter any other.

Some of the objections of the “Civil Society” protesters were utterly subjective as I pointed out at the time.
DJ cannot be worse than other diplomats in service today; that does not mean that he is the man for the job.
But objections should be fair and balanced.

Jayathilaka s Ideology is not far from that of Wimal Weerwanse.
But my million dollar question is the backgrounds both come from are totally different.
1. Jayathilaka – Colombo from an educated background with a father known to be a good journalist. So nothing should have gone wrong in his childhood if Jayathilaka s genetics is normal
2. Werawanse – started his rebel like behaviour from his child hood. A village boy is proved to be coming from a poor background WITH nothing valuable their parents could offer him
Both have got something in common to go after CUBAN or other revolutions but to behave the other way around when it goes with their own selfish gains. Maxisem is put aside whenever Wimal W would want to grab state funds for his newly built house. Man is proved to have nothing in his pocket at the time joined the parliament.
Jayathilaka instead got on with English speaking people from the beginign on,meaning opened himself to feed himself with facts. He even got his doctorate though late. Wimal is a school drop out. But his mouth piece is more or less like the body of a prostitute is being abused by Rajapakshe men for their propaganda work.
No matter facts would lie somehwere, but Weerawanse s focus was foreign invasion, western empirialism and several other points that saint ones would never see it right.

I don’t agree too much with Dayan on his politics and his wavering ways. The upright gentleman Mervin was my friend. But compared to most diplomatic appointments other than those from the Overseas cadre (if there is one now) he is miles better qualified to break bread with the more accomplished in the diplomatic circles in Moscow. Unlike the low levels who now serve as diplomats, who only wasted Sri Lanka’s valuable foreign-exchange by airlifting cooks to make hoppers-vangedi sambol and loads of Kandyan dancers Dayan with his know-how on Marx-Engels, Gramsci will impress much of the savvy diplomats and literati in the Kremlin circuit. The exception will be the fancied Israelis, whom Dayan rather foolishly rubbed on the wrong side in Geneva a few years ago – trying to impress the Arab lobby. Israelis don’t forget their foes easily. Dad Mervin always kept on the right side of the Israelis while being strongly pro-Arab. That’s diplomacy.
