“If they answer not to thy call walk alone…when the night is troubled with storm, O thou of evil luck, with the thunder flame of pain ignite thine own heart and let it burn alone.” ~Rabindranath Tagore
It was reported last week that President Maithripala Sirisena will be the Chief Guest at the 70th Anniversary celebrations of the United National Party (UNP). Maithripala Sirisena is not only the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka; he is the current leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), in the last six decades the SLFP has been the chief political nemesis of the UNP. Any student of Sri Lanka’s post-Independence political history would know that the SLFP, even though has always been reckoned as an alternative to the UNP, drew its major portion of membership from the left-oriented Sinhala-speaking, Swabhasha-educated electorate. Its fundamental premise was public-sector dominated, nationalization-driven economy overlaid with a nationalistic (not necessarily patriotic) veneer. When it suited them, they covered their economic policies with a nationalistic wrapper while their socio-cultural policies were coated with a socialist veneer. This mutual juxtaposition of coverings helped them to message their appeal to be more populist rather than practical and rational.
While the progressive-minded, yet not so radical voter, who would have identified with policies and principles propagated by the then left-wing parties such as the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) and the Communist Party (CP,) was attracted to the SLFP for most obvious reasons, the more militant and radical leftists were retained by the LSSP and CP and later by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). There is no doubt that a significant segment of the UNP voting bloc too may have thrown in their lot with the SLFP; but that would have essentially been those whose familiarity with the vernacular and attracted by the fivefold pillars of the Bandaranaike doctrine – Sanga (Buddhist Clergy), Veda (Indigenous doctors), Guru (School teacher), Govi (farmer) and Kamkaru (proletariat) of Sri Lankan society. When SWRD Bandaranaike, the founder of the SLFP, formed the SLFP, its core of elites may have come from the UNP. But the at grassroots level, majority of their voters would have come from the left parties that existed at the time.
We also have to bear in mind that that whenever the contest was between the UNP and SLFP, the UNP came on top barring 1960 July General Elections. Every other time it was an SLFP-led left-oriented coalition that was voted into power. While the UNP was portrayed as a political party exclusively representing the elitist, English-speaking, capitalist political entity, every other party of the coalition led by the SLFP fought among each other to be accepted as the sole representative of the ‘common man’. Largely Sinhala-speaking and bent on a fresh econo-political dynamic of ‘nationalization frenzy’, these voters, apart from the populist measures of a welfare state economy, had one singularly stark center: the Bandaranaike family’. The leadership of the SLFP was never bestowed upon an outsider and seniority was no distinguishable criterion for the selection of the leader either. In other words, the SLFP remained primarily a family-dominated political party playing to the historical character of Sinhalese Buddhists of who are more attracted to a personality cult rather than to counsel of councils.
Forged by the Swabhasha policy, the Bandaranaike doctrine, if there were any like that, included, among others, nationalization of private businesses and government takeover of private schools coupled with sweeping tilts towards quasi-socialist dogmas that played a vital and pivotal role in the mindset of the underprivileged classes of Sri Lanka society in the fifties and sixties and even in the seventies. A mindset that was shaped and buttressed by ceaseless propaganda, the SLFP became the vanguard of the rural Sinhalese masses.
The UNP did not have a persuasive alternative to this. That was until J R Jayewardene became its leader. A politician of consummate skill in both strategy and tactics, a devoted student of numbers, apart from introducing some fresh faces of men and women, and a man of uncommon discipline, J R J instilled in the minds of the UNP membership an unflappable sense of urgency and drive. The results of this six-year long campaign in the early seventies propelled the Party into a historic electoral victory in 1977 and unbroken seventeen-year long rule.
After the two terms of Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, once again, the leadership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party passed on to another family – the Rajapaksas. What happened during the Rajapaksa rule is now a stinking chapter of recent history. The party followers, mainly at the grassroots level, began the deifying process of the Rajapaksas. The war-victory against the dreaded Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) and Prabhakaran further solidified the stance of the Rajapaksas in the country, particularly in the far out rural districts where the overwhelming majority is made up of Sinhalese Buddhists.
In the wake of the assassination of the second tier leadership of the UNP, consisting of Premadasa, Gamini Dissanayake and Lalith Athulathmudali, the UNP went into political wilderness until it dawned on the current leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe that a sure route back to the helm of the country lay in a craftily laid out strategy; a strategy that involved a major defection from the Rajapaksa-centered SLFP-led coalition. Maithripala Sirisena, the then Secretary of the SLFP and Minister of Health reached a landmark decision. A decision that would have frightened an ordinary man and sent him to fits of indecision and resultant terror, Maithripala Sirisena was not afraid to take.
This is the context within which the person of Maithripala Sirisena has to be discussed and debated about. For the first time ever in the history of the SLFP, its esteemed mantle has fallen on a Sirisena, an ordinary, non-aristocratic (not that the Rajapaksas are aristocratic), a genuine product of the ’56 transformation. Steeped in the Bandaranaike doctrine, Sirisena after assuming Presidency of the country became the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. His family members are not involved in politics. And his declaration that he sought no second term added to the sincerity of purpose and heavier weight to his responsibility as new Commander-in-Chief. Given that background, Sirisena’s presumed attendance at the 70th Anniversary Celebrations of the UNP is significant. One does not have to look for any nuanced circumstances and get lost in the land of ‘beyond the obvious’ like most pundits do. Moreover, it comes amidst chaotic circumstances that prevail within the ranks of the SLFP in which the Rajapaksa faction holds substantial say, particularly among some notable parliamentarians and Provincial Councilors.
When it comes to political strategy and tactics, Ranil Wickremesinghe has proven to be no tyro either. How does a political leader who also happens to be the Prime Minister of the country play his political cards cleverly without surrendering his trumps? Ranil Wickremesinghe had massive leadership issues soon after the previous Presidential Election at which Mahinda Rajapaksa defeated Sarath Fonseka. A chaotic party dynamic and a resultant challenge to his leadership by his longtime second-in-command Karu Jayasuriya, the current Speaker of the House of Parliament, apparently have tempered the steely persona of Wickremesinghe.
Both Ranil and Maithripala know fully well that it was the bulk of the UNP and the overwhelming (well over 90% of the Tamil and Muslim), minority vote that delivered the successful results of the 2015 Presidential Elections. The strength of this uncommon coalition government of the UNP-SLFP is the strength of bond that exists between the leaders of their respective parties. That bond between Ranil and Maithripala needs to be further strengthened and any weakening or crack would certainly signal a damage to that coalition. Loose talks by some SLFP parliamentarians about defeating the UNP is just that- loose. That faction of the SLFP which continues to harbor dreams about coming back to occupy the governing seats is not only delusionary, it tells a story about as to how much they miss that corrupting taste of luxuries and over-indulgences of power they enjoyed for two full decades.
In politics, it’s all context. Only half-baked novices would glorify themselves by dwelling in insulated capsules of events and try to prognosticate and forecast and invariably be found gravely deficient in judgment and action that ensues those actions. Taken out of context, Maithripala Sirisena’s participation at a UNP Anniversary celebration would be treated as a slap on the face of the SLFP loyalists. But within the context of the above analysis, it could be in fact portrayed as a sincere attempt at serious reconciliation between the two Sinhala-dominated political parties in Sri Lanka. Maithripala Sirisena has shown grace and courage when he accepted the UNP’s invitation. It was no slap on SLFP loyalists; it is a visionary’s challenge to the status quo.

This is the best example that both grand parties can work on reconciliation and peace together.
Even if some radical fractions could interpret it according to them, in a govt – that play consensual politics, why not President takes part in constituent party s grand ceremonies.

Here is what the Good Governance advocate, who put in a tireless effort to roll Rajapakasas, Dr Jayasooriya said the other day.
“I will sack Six Cabinet Ministers and Thirteen Permanent Secs to day if I had the power.”
What does it say about this Yahapalanaya.
Yahapalana PM Batalanda Ranil couldn’t win even a chook raffle in the Village, until his cousin Whiskey Madam came in from the Diaspora with this Yahapalana Plan,
I bet my house that the Diaspora friendly Think Tanks in the West hatched it.
As the writer says UNP is the party of the Elite , Anglicans Vellalas, and the Wahabis.
Vellas detached after putting Batalnda and Bodhi Sira together,
Only Sinhala Buddhists with the dosh aligned with them for obvious reasons.
Common citizen didn’t have any thing there, except the naive poor urban and rural poor who were bought by the UNP activists sent from Colombo, with bags of money.
Thanks to Bandaranayakas many from the the village made it to middle class, mainly because of free education,
After completing his major assignmetns which were handed down by the West and the Bedouin Prince, Batalanda wants to change our free education in to a American System.
Is it going to move more village kids in to the Middle Class?.
The next big ticket item is ETCA with India.
Why would the Indian Businesses open up factories in Hambantota when they can hire Hindian labour at two Dollars a day.
Even that is nearly 25 % more than the poverty rate there at USD 1.25 a day.
And they have nearly four hundred million in the pool to pick from.
Naive Sinhala Buddhist people who barrack for these Yahapalana Politicians don’t understand these issues.
Because these Cabinet Ministers who have been hired by the West in this Yahapalana set up keep bamboozling the poor with bullshit.
Can any one name those 6 Heavies in Yhapalana Cabinet whom Mr Jayasooriya wants to sack?.
If all correct, I will send a Bottle of 200 Dollar Single Malt as the Prize.

Dear Sumane,
I initially thought you are rascist, castist, and fundamentalist but I think you are indirectly on the side of good governance (Ranil-Mithiri) because your writings make people to think that this sort writings are not belong to true buddhists or to a good nation. Mahinda and his power hungry group will be further hatred by ordinary peace loving people. Good man continue with your motives.

Sirisena will face the same fate as Sarath fonseka. Sirisena won with the UNP plus Tamil + Muslim votes. After the win he used opportunistic politicians to become the leader of SLFP. Sadly the SLFP does not see him as its leader. The first egg on the face for Sirisena will be the local elections. Where he will be completely rejected and be placed a distance third after MR’s new movement. Then at the next presidential election Sirisena going as the third candidate will erode the UNP vote base not the SLFP. So anyone saying that the JO is strengthening the UNP is simply naive. With the level of incompetence UNP has shown in governing it is anybody’s guess who will win the next election. So the question Sirisena has to ask is who is going to carry him. Not the SLFP for sure. May be his future is in leading the UNP. Given the popularity of him in the UNP he will have a better chance of ousting Ranil from UNP than Mahinda from SLFP.

How come Mr Sirisena to compare with SFs previous term ? But the stupid ilk of your sort can do so. Today, entire world praises the steps being taken by Mr Sirisena led administration. Even if investigations are seen to be on snail pace, they move forward. Unlike the days of Meeharaka Rajakashe , today people are given freedom but freedom, even press men though abuse it.. DM adds it as revenge the way Gotabaya and other Rajapakshes are being brought to the law of the country. Not only them but also any others even UNEDUCATED UNP MP mannapperuma has been brought before the law. And there is a tangible slow of finalizing those investigations but there are reasons for or that.

This is the Democracy in Sri Lankan style. You never here anything like this in
other democtratic countries. It is like Obama being the chief guest in Donald
Trums convention. Or in Australia Bill Shorten of the labour party being the
chief guest of the innogeration of Malcolm Turnbull the Liberal party chief
as the prime minister. To function as a true democracy a viable effective opposition is vital for the country. Before this charade of this new national
government over 3rd of the mps were crooks. Now it seems all of the parliament
mps are crooks.Might as well declare Sri lanka as a one party state

Wonder whether Bag man Mahendran will be seated next to the Visionary to receive the 70 Anniversary ovation from the UNP members ?.
Will Galleon be the MC?
Because he seems to be the most popular Yahapalana minister who is doing very well , according to none other than the Yahapalana supporter Prince Anura’s Party.
Galleon Ravi has bought a Warehouse as a gift for his Daughter & the Missus, according to the JVP.
Deposit was LKR 400 Million.
But Galleon went to courts to plead for a staggered repayment plan for a bounced cheque which he gave a business partner.
It was only for 10 Lakhs according to the JVP. And it was just before Galleon got the Finance Minister gig.
Now he pays LKR 400 Million as the Deposit.
Wonder how much the instalments are..
It surely must be worth a few bob because the vellalas are now selling their 3 Bedder Apartments for LKR 30 Million upwards.
Yhapalanaya is certainly good for some thanks to this Visionary.

Sumane, I have been posing the following questions to you for a long, long time, you never respond.
Would you please answer them like a man and then go on with your MARA and wellala song.
1. Did MARA swindle Tsuanami Fund ?
2. Did MARA bribe LTTE to win his election bid ?
3. Was MARA not the President, when Lasantha was murdered in HSZ ?
4. Was MARA not the President, when Bharatha Lakshman was murdered in broad day light.
5. Was MARA not the President, when General Fonseka, the war winning patriot was dragged like a dog and incarcerated.
6. Was MARA not the President, when animosity among communities was encouraged and protected, spearheaded by Balu Sena.
7. Was MARA not the President, when people demanding basic drinking water, was gunned down with utmost brutality.
8. Was MARA not the President, when poor people’s tax money was so exorbitantly spent on Rajathuma’s family and henchmen, like skinning the poor masses.
9. Was MARA not the President, when colossal plunder of public property and money was taking place in the most heinous manner.
10. Was MARA not the President, when law and order was at the lowest ebb culminating in the sacking of our sitting Chief Justice, by the thugs like Modawansa and the gang. Not to mention GOTA’s white van abductions, extortion and murders.
Mr.Sumane, just because MARA happened to be the President when General Fonseka won the war for us, we cannot hand over our beloved country and the people on a platter to MARA family to have a field day. Mother Lanka is not MARA’s Boothalaya.
Respond to above, before you pen anything silly again or else, I have all the right to conclude that you are sitting on your head.

Ansar mate,
Batalanada Ranil doesn’t do nepotism as I understand, except hiring Mahendran even after he was sacked by Lankan Mandella.
Which one of the two are related to you to get so upset?.
Is it Mahendran or it is Galleon?
As for your list, you should check with the new UNP card carrying IGP,who I thought is in charge of Batalanada Ranil’s F*****CID.
If I put my two cents worth , it will not only be contempt of court, but also may taint the impartiality of Yahapalana Investigations done by the UNP Police.

“There is a sucker born every minute” It is true in Sri Lankan politics, the rate has gone up “There is a Sucker born every Thirty Seconds and a Spin Doctor born every day”.
Do we care Maithri attends the UNP celebration, Answer is : NO, NAADA. It is a symbol of Re-union and we the people understand that there is no difference between the SLFP Mafia and the UNP Mafia. Therefore, it does not make any difference to us whether Maithri, Mahinda or Chandrika decides to attend the above unvirtuous reunion.
However, I give a damn when spin doctors attempt to hoodwink the readers with misinformation. Viswamithra says;
“The UNP did not have a persuasive alternative to this. Unbelievable bogus character certificate has been given by this writer to one of the worst, dirtiest, schemers in Sri Lankan Politics. J.R.Jayawardene was a man driven by thirst for power to be the ruler of Sri Lanka but not a patriot by any measure. He was neither a Strategist nor a Tactician. A great conniving Machiavellian; For this dirty politician of our history, popularly known as Foxy Dicky; End justified the Means.
Among his many schemes and hidden projects driven to capture the power are:

A great conniving Machiavellian; For this dirty politician of our history, popularly known as Foxy Dicky; End justified the Means.
Among his many schemes and hidden projects driven to capture the power are:
1) A Christian claiming to be a Buddhist to hoodwink the Sinhala Buddhist voters.
2) Hartal of 1953; JRJ wanted to eliminate Dudley Senanayake , he engineered the huge social uprising using the budget as a tool against Dudley. ( I was there)
3) He gave an enormous hard time and heart wrenching troubles to the gentleman Dudley Senanayake, ultimately died of a heart attack at Durdans Hospital. (I was there)
4) Did not care about LTTE killing Sinhala People outside the Colombo District boundary. Because the mostly Sinhala-Buddhists were the victims. But, when LTTE suicide bombers appeared inside Colombo, he ordered military to go after LTTE save his voter base.
5) He was the main reason why Indian Central Government supported LTTE tacitly. It was like a personal vendetta, He openly insulted and criticized Indhira Ghandhi , Mainly through character assassinations of Ghanddhi family. During his rule Sri Lanka always opposed every issue that India either supported or sponsored at the United Nations (More than 100 times). The result; there were FIVE LTTE training camps inside India. So J R Jayawardene was one of the men who fed LTTE at its infancy. (I was in NY and observed all these)
6) He has called the people of Sri Lanka the DOGS. The day when he stripped Mrs. Bandaranayake of her civic rights, the people reacted spontaneously and started to stream into Colombo from every city of the country to protest against this draconian decision. of Foxy Dicky ordered the military/police to stop every protestor coming to Colombo, including the innocent civilians. That is not all, he went on Radio at prime time news hour and said “Mama oya eka BALLEKUTAWATH colombota enna denna epa kiyala niyoga kara”- I ordered not to let any of those DOGS to come to Colombo.- (I was there and stopped at many blockades placed on Galle road from Matara to Colombo)
7) The man was dead scared of democracy and he will “shit” in his pants whenever a democratic voice is heard. That was the reason why he released Rohana Wijeweera and the clique and expected destroy Mrs. Bandaranaike and her clique.
8) First to call himself” Rajano”. Held a Perahara in Kandy somewhat similar to Kandy Esala Perahara. It was called RAJA PERAHERA. Dirty foxy Dicky came to Paththirippuwa and introduced himself as the latest king. (I was there witnessing the horrible scene in Kandy)
9) JRJ is the Father of “SRI LANKAN SLAVE TRADE”; His open market economic policies decimated the industrial jobs.( I was there too)
10) Introduction of new Constitution in 1077, known as “JR’s KNOT” paved the way for criminals and known drug peddlers to enter the parliament. The objectives were a) Never let SLFP or any other party to gain two third majority b) Further divide Sinhla-Buddhist vote (Fulfilling his ancestors wish) (I was there)
The list can go on and on…
Viswamithra where were you when all these treacherous activities were going on under the command of J.R.Jayawardene. Viswamithra, the above is a summary only; therefore don’t you ever try to sugar coat JR Jayawardene’s character, his anti Sinhala -Buddhist policies and hoodwink the readers. Spin doctors like you are having a very busy schedule these days, but I wonder for how long this charade will last.

The Ceylon National Congress (CNC) is the first Nationalistic political party formed by Sir Ponnampalam Arunachalam in 1888.DS Senanayake formed the UNP leaving the CNC because he preferred Dominian status instead of full freedom from British in 1943. It is his government disenfranchised the plantation workers of Indian descent, the Indian Tamils, using the Ceylon Citizenship Act of 1948 and the Parliamentary Elections Amendment Act of 1949.

Even founder father of the party and their clan (Senanayakes) were not Pukkha Sahib enough to Colombo Elites. So do you expect JRJayawardene to treat Premadasa, Gamini and Lalith differently.
“13th amendment is because of JRJ’s brillient politics.”
13th Amendment was India’s Idea. Foxy Dicky was made to swallow his own vomit by India so it appeared to be his idea. Dicky was never a statesman, never a good politician, never a patriot he was a sophisticated swindler.

I do not see any analysis at all. You have just compiled the symptoms of two dirty and corrupt political organizations in Sri Lanka. We, the citizens, have seen, heard, felt, tasted and smelt the results of what you have stated since the demise of Honorable D.S.Senanayake. (You have conveniently omitted mentioning the name of this noble political leader of Sri Lanka perhaps for obvious reasons)
Also you have willingly or unwittingly twisted the symptoms of two dying political parties as accomplishments. It is a vague attempt to cover-up the sins committed by them especially SWRDB and JRJ.
Right now these two political parties are without any potential leaders to lead them and clear national policy platforms are surviving on a “Life Support System” known as “SANHIDIYA GOVERNMENT”.- It is nothing but; you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. They recently extended the scratching each other’s back until 2020.
The presidential election of January 2015 and the parliamentary elections in August 2015 were the last two major moves of the End Game played by the UNP and SLFP.
More importantly, the citizens are fed-up and they do not expect or desire any “WHITE KNIGHT” to appear from the same conniving dubious Colombo elite circle or the rotten “Wanna be Elites’ from backwoods of Sri Lanka. So who cares about who attends the UNP birthday bash.
Finally, if you expect this assemblage of misdeeds and conniving political moves as a precursor for some good things to happen in the future, Viswamithra, you are sadly mistaken.

No issue of MS attending the UNP convention as the President of this country. But he should not attend as the leader of the SLFP as SLFP must remain as an alternate party to the UNP and not as a section of the UNP. SLFP leader wishing the UNP all the best and success means no hopes for the SLFP. He must allow some other person the lead the SLFP. He cannot keep both UNP and SLFP under him. It is called abuse of power for personal benefit.

” SLFP must remain as an alternate party to the UNP and not as a section of the UNP”
Rightly so, and it is a slap in the face to SLFP supporters. Now if you want to make the case that SLFP supporters are all rowdy thieves then do that, like the former president and SLFP senior advisor CBK said about the SLPF itself “don’t vote for them (the SLFP)”.
If you are willing to accept SLFP supporters (there are millions of them who voted for MR, by the way) as your fellow equals as countrymen then please respect their right to demand that their party leader supports their party and only their party, and will lose support if he does not do so.
They all still talk about an SLFP win in the next election, if you are listening.

We have for the last 68 years since Independence have progressed backwards when our neighboring countries have progressed, when then Ceylon, was far ahead of all these countries. What have we been doing all these years, we have only been finding faults of each party that was governing the country and not thinking of the progress of the country.
In my opinion what both President and Prime Minister is doing now is to bring the two main factions together and move forwards and leave them alone so that they together will achieve the desired goal, instead of criticizing and obstructing them let us all wish them well.

The history is now advancing still swiftly ,national tragedies of whole Sri Lankan that are being crushed or have been crushed by USA, UK and Indian coup of political intervene in election 2015 January 8th are immeasurably more terrible.
After MS in the 2015 January 9th being to power of state at centre of Colombo the very interweaving of US,UK and Indian and democratic and sovereignty trends ,movements and aspirations is also in evidence ,with immense difference that democratic movement are immeasurably weaker and USA , UK and Indian ones immeasurably strong.
But the People’s Movement of Democracy and Sovereignty and is ongoing a democratic revolution infinitely deeper, more closer to people and more powerful than the previous MR led bourgeoisie revolution since 2005.
Under UNP-Ranil. W… MS and CBK so-called ‘good governance and rule of law’ by Neo-liberalism of US neo-colonialism, that steadily undermined democratic revolution since 2015 January.
The current MS led regime plunderer has besieged, us oppressed and humiliated us by US and Indian against people of all Sri Lankans; but we are capable of enduring all theses burdens.
We are not along in the world. We are having Sri Lankan very loyal helpers, friends supports inside and outside country.

It is the duty of a good citizen that if he or she know anything about illegal or bad activities to inform and initiate actions through right path. And make the offenders punished and prevent further wrongs. Speaking on a platform is like a black mail. Under PTA not informing the police is an offence. That may be Yahapalanaya.
