Sri Lanka College Of Obstetricians And Gynecologists: Covering The Fallopian Tubes With A Thousand Rupee Note

By Grusha Andrews

First thing first.

I have no intention of white washing the infamous Dr Shafi Siyabdeen who has allegedly caused unconsented infertility in 4000 mothers. Whatever the truth of that allegation may be, it is obvious that Dr Shafi was involved in a money laundering exercise which would put a final nail on his professional life for sure.

Dr Shafi Siyabdeen

However, alternatively, in this weird country it won’t be a huge surprise if Dr Shafi was resurrected from the death of his profession and was made Governor of the Eastern Province tomorrow, or something.

But that is not the real issue here.

It is now ten days since a guy with a dead political life ignited the whole Sri Lankan society with Islamophobia targeting an allegation surrounding Dr Shafi. As I suggested previously we must not even mention the name of that putrid professor for Rajarata University who is trying to give oxygen to his dying political potential by igniting racism. By his own admission he and others have known of this atrocity for quite the while and waited for the opportune moment for themselves to “reveal“ it.

Gynecologist Cats That Sh*t On The Infertility Rock

It is questionable how an entire fraternity of Obstetricians and Gynecologists are maintaining an official silence (excluding one or two sporadic personal statements on Facebook by expatriate, retired Gynecologists) regarding this professional crisis that is eroding the trust of the public in the entire medical profession. The magnitude of this destruction is of a national scale. They are behaving pretty much like the cat that defecated on a rock and is unable to cover it up with sand.

Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (SLCOG) is the apex professional body for its specialty. It is also the only official body that lays down clinical guidelines, norms, guidelines for patient safety, facilitate post graduate education and is committed to maintaining the good name and the highest professional standards of the discipline. It is the foremost and the un-challengeable organization that stands for the discipline of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Sri Lanka.

When a super serious allegation is made against Dr Shafi that he made 400 mothers infertile without consent whilst under the supervision of a Consultant Gynecologist leading to a national uproar and calamity, the SLCOG is maintaining meek silence as if gone deaf and dumb. What they should have done is to immediately offer their technical expertise to the Ministry of Health without even waiting for a request. They should have immediately engaged with the post Easter Sunday Sri Lankan society still in uncertainty and shock to alleviate their hysterical reaction to this allegation. They should have issued a professional statement to control the escalation.

Instead what happened?

What happened was that a member of the council of SLCOG called Professor Hemantha Dodampahala issued a statement that women can be made infertile by pressing the Fallopian tubes with an instrument during the Caesarian Section. Theoretically it is plausible that if any live tissue, blood vessel or tube, when compressed with a surgical instrument for an hour or two will obviously lose its vitality and die. You don’t need a professor to spread that two bit theory. A child knows that.

By this logic, if a patient undergoing a surgery today in their abdominal cavity, perineal cavity of any other organ dies tomorrow, the relatives can complain that this was due to the compressing of an organ by the surgeon. From tomorrow it would be impossible for a patient to die without the doctor being implicated with murder. Tomorrow if a Muslim patient dies after being treated by a Sinhala doctor, his Muslim relatives can make the same allegation.

What Dodampahala is raping is the very nobility of the medical profession. Its humanity and vulnerability.  From tomorrow it might be impossible for a patient to die. Dodampahala has taught the public the theory of keeping the knife to the throat of the doctors.

Does The Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians And Gynecologist Have Morals?

Dodampahala and all other Gynecologists who came of Hiru and Derana TV wagging surgical instruments and instilling mass hysteria and fear are doing so irresponsibly, destroying the trust placed on the medical profession by the public. Do these Gynecologists actually have a moral background to do these things? If you search a little deep on the internet you will find the black marks and the red spots of their histories. You will find out what their political orientations are.

The President of the SLCOG has a huge responsibility to become the professional mediator between the profession and the public. Because Dr Shafi worked under the supervision of a member of the SLCOG. The President of the SLCOG should have taken immediate measures to carry out a confidential internal fact finding about the conduct of the Consultant connected to this situation. He should have come out to the public and shared the needful facts and give the public the confidence that this problem is being tackled at the professional level. He should have been the builder of confidence in the medical profession when it is crumbling in all direction. It was the moral prerogative of the President of the SLCOG.

But does Professor Athula Kaluarachchi have the moral background to do the right thing?

I write below the names of the council of the SLCOG.

Current President – Professor Athula Kaluarachchi

2020 President elect – Dr U.D.P. Rathnasiri.

2018 President – Professor P.S. Wijesinghe

Current secretary – Dr Harsha Atapattu

Other council members: Doctors Ruwan Silva, Madura Jayawardhane, Sanath Lanerolle, Chandana Jayasundare, Mangala Dissanayake, K. Muthunthan, Rukshan Fernandopulle, Janaki Kumarasinghe, Samanthi Premarathne, Professor C Randeniya, Professor Tiran Dian, S.P Akmeemana, Dharshna Abeygunawardene, Prasad Rannulu, Dammika Silva, Sudath Senaratne, H.M.J.N. Herath, Dinuka Lankeshwara, Sumith Warnasuriya, Nalin Rodriogo, Wasanha Galappaththi, P.H.P.Silva, Professor S.H. Dodampahala, A. Seethambarapillai, – K. P.D. Liyanagama, A.K..P Ranaweera, Chaminda Mathota, Chaminda Kandauda, Professor Jayantha Jayawardana, Lakshman Senanayake and Gamini Perera.

My question is: in this long list of doctors and professors, isn’t there even one person who has a moral awakening in the face of this national and professional disaster?

No Gynecologist, in fact, no doctor of any discipline today can work with pure intention towards the patient due to the deprecation of this noble profession by these individuals. Isn’t there a single person in this council who has the moral courage to oppose it?

Why isn’t s single council member of the SLCOG sanding up to put a stop to the fear psychosis, racism and gray interpretations spread by these opportunists? Why are they not resisting the fear mongering amongst the normal citizens who have no medical education?

This council has actually passed the golden hour where they should have come before the public and sat together to alleviate their fears. At least now they should get over their passivity and stop the betrayal of the noble profession by opportunists by educating the public about the reality of this issue.

At least now they should hold a press conference and correct the misconceptions of society regarding this issue and bring out the unbiased views. If they do not have the knowledge and the ability to do that there is no point of them walking lordly in their colorful robes , promoting themselves, travelling the world and using their status to increase their private practice. They are not worthy of their empty opulence.

Will they protect their colleague, the Consultant Gynecologist at the Kurunegala hospital? Will they ascertain allegations? Will they come out with their professional opinion? Wil they alleviate the “doctor phobia” among the public?

The SLCOG is childishly attempting to cover the Fallopian tubes of the entire nation with a thousand rupee note. They are a bunch of jokers like the naked emperor. The reason that these professionals cannot do their professional duty by the nation is that many of them have dark pasts behind their opulent lives. I will not touch upon those in this article. How many have got here and remain here is a topic for another article.

Reality Of The Obstetricians And Gynecologists In Sri Lanka.

The government circulars clearly state that a Senior House Officer (SHO) such as Dr Shafi cannot operate on patients without the supervision of the Consultant. But the reality of Sri Lanka is that the Consultants are somewhat scared of the SHO (Not all). The intern house officers and the post graduate trainees (Registrars) come and go. It is the SHO who is the constant id the Consultant’s life. So even the interns and the Registrars are scared of the SHO. Because the Consultants usually look to maintain the good relationship with the SHO.

Whilst the Consultant it doing private channeling it is the SHO that gives him the time and peace to do so. Therefore many Consultants don’t impose too many regulations on the SHO. Whether they come to work or not his monthly diary is signed. His full 120 hours of overtime payment is recommended and forwarded by the Consultant. Even if the SHO comes to work in the morning or not he releases the Consultant at night for channeling. So many Consultants don’t actively look for their SHO in the morning (again, not all are like this).

During the times when Registrars are not available, the SHOs carry the burden of the units. Many consultants who work away from Colombo and main cities appointed to places such as Kurunegala, Jaffna, Dambulla etc, suffer from a peculiar “Tuesday to Thursday Syndrome”. They leave their station on Thursday and return only on Tuesday. These are all illegal “leave” that the Consultants avail. It is the SHOs who cover up the Consultant’s absence.

Some Consultants get all the slave labor from the SHO such as getting his cars serviced, getting the tyres changed, going boozing, and going to clean the school of the Consultant’s children etc. Look closely in to the conduct, not only of Gynecologists, but also of Consultants of other specialties. How many days a week do they come to work?  If they do come to work, how many hours do they work? Are they in their stations even on the days they are night on call? Are they sometimes not in Yala and Wilpattu? Are they not leaving their units at the mercy of the SHO and off doing their unending recreation- photography, tiger watching and lion watching in Arica, holidaying, building holiday bungalows, building temples, running medical supplies companies, appearing on TV, singing, preaching Buddhism). Whilst they are up to these Shenanigans, it is the SHO who covers up for their physical absence.

Therefore this symbiotic relationship between the Consultant and the SHO is made with money, power, and a “special bond” .This “human relationship“ is beautiful and can’t go wrong till the SHO gets in to hot waters like Dr Shafi. When things go wrong the Consultant, just like the Gynecologist in Teaching Hospital Kurunegala is not to be found.  He will not step up to take the legal, professional and moral responsibility and show their decency. The SLCOG also does not have such decency.

How was a Shafi created?

If Dr Shafi was up to this atrocity, you must try to understand how such a powerful creature is created.

That power did not come to him because he was Muslim, political, cunning .That power came to him because the real criminal behind this crime, the supervising consultant who has the legal responsibility towards these alleged atrocity gave Dr Shafi the omnipotence to do that.

Those mothers who are creating drama on the streets of Kurunegala demanding the blood of Dr Shafi, asking that he be hanged, demanding compensation from the government should ask where the supervising Consultant who was responsible for monitoring his junior was, till this alleged ethnic cleansing happened.

If Dr Shafi is equal to a murderer, who is his supervising Consultant equal to?

The supervising Consultant of Kurunnegala Teaching Hospital who birthed, fed, petted, gave the scalpel to Dr Shafi for his own convenience and then looked away is equal to one person. He is equal to the President of our country who knew about the Easter Sunday attack, yet looked away, went to Thirupathi and then went to Singapore. This Consultant is equal to our President who knew but did nothing.

Gentlemen (and the few ladies) of the council of the SLCOG,

Reveal the truth about the Fallopian tubes of the nation that you are currently covering with a thousand rupee note. At least now cover your professional nakedness with the cloth of ethics.

You are being unmasked.

Stop your self-gratification and do a self- analysis.

Do your professional duty.

Come forward as the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and gynecologists and reveal the truth to the nation and alleviate this mass hysteria.

The SLCOG need not comment on idiotic allegations against a fellow member of the medical profession.

If an obstetrician spent “an hour or two”, ‘compressing’ fallopian tubes of a patient, neglecting the delivery of the child, each ‘caesarian section’ would take many hours.
    Hence, this cannot happen.

There was a professor who could ‘deliver’ the child during a caesarian section within six minutes.

You are right they need not comment on idiotic allegations, but unfortunately in our land of idiots ready to believe all idiotic allegations, and the ensuing mass hysteria, you have to, in ALL three languages.

May I remind you of the idiotic allegations about “goolies” put into food at a restaurant, and the sweets given to Sinhala women to make them “barren”, and the mass hysteria that we witnessed, until Government researches assured the idiots that it was simply a ball of flour? We have to admit we have a percentage of our population who still have their minds in the caveman era, where they will believe anything, however ridiculous, as long as it is about the “other”, they dislike anyway, and willing to believe anything negative about “them”.

No ! The allegations can be true. Its the duty of the hospital to investigate these women to establish their tubal patency. The SLCOG keep silent. Any doctor operates can harm any organ if he has the intension. Shaffi had a missikn to accomplish. So we have a reasonable doubt that he would have at least tried. Its yet to proove

I have worked with one who did it in ten minutes most elegantly without rushing and with just one mildly bloodstained towel at the end. Grusha, dont give this a hysterical spin.
You have nevertheless raised a a few good points. My opinion is that genocide with intent is highly unlikely. You would think so too if you had any idea of how operation theatres function.

    Grusha,
Dr. Shafi is innocent until proven guilty. Allegations of money laundering and sterilizations have to be proved beyond doubt. Not only the SLCOG is responsible to the nation, the MP for Kurunegala is also responsible to answer how he allowed this to happen in his electorate.

      Steve,
anyone is innocient until the accusations levelled at them are not yet investigated.
      :
But my question is, even if 10 days are already passed, what have GMOA or any other entities done in this regard. Their role should be to clear the doubts or not ?:
      :
GMOA thugs, are doing whatever they are asked to do so by POHOTTUWA vicious political group of the island.
      :
This country today seems to have no LEGAL system in function under PALLEWATTA BALLIGE PUTHAGE SIRISENA as the MINISTER OF law and order.:
Let alone in the days to come, BP SIRISENA should be hung by his balls not respecting the least.. for all the delibeate crimes being done by his men under his direct mediation. If anyone would argue, the bugger president is innocient. Presicent should clear the doubts. :
      .
We can ONLY beg divine forces to TAKE this BP SIRISENA from our sights. ENOUGH is enough !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sorry to tell you that it is high time all the consultants wake up otherwise everyone will be pulled up. The time you should be at work are working some where to earn more money. The fact is that hospitals are not butchers shop. This is not going to stop here all of you will be tasked and total erosion of professionalism. Don’t let this happen wake up and kill these racist ideologies now before it is too late. Not only the gynecologist all others must follow the same pursuit to establish the code of ethics. If you don’t don’t do it now it will be the doctors will have to go to the gallows. For slightest reason courts will be there for medical negligence

If this happened in a country like Japan the Minister of Health would have immediately resigned. Why don’t you ask the present Minister of Health to resign.

National Press! Are you kidding? There is no such a thing called National Press in SL. Rather, there is only a politically motivated mob screaming to lynch anybody they can in order to accomplish there private agendas! Therefore, I guarantee that these kinds essays will have no impact whatsoever on the mob. It is also possible that the current Islamaphobia is a well planned national scheme organized by the opposition who is constantly waiting for this kind opportunity!

Grusha, talking about Gyn & Obs Doctors, there are already complaints and suspicion that they are doing unnecessary procedures for extra income like elective/planned caesareans when there is no actual risks or indications, hysterectomy for fibroids which could have been easily treated with medications, ordering expensive tests and procedures which are unnecessary , in name of infertility screening.. Now what ever the expert doctor told is not true. The only way sterilization can be done is by ligation. Even then there is a very small chance of getting pregnant. So just clamping the tubes will not have any such effects , close to ligation. Also such procedure will lead to high chances of post operative complications which will lead to frequent hospital visits and inadvertently finding out the fault caused by surgeon . Clamping of tubes can lead to complication such as infection, necrosis, bleeding, constrictions, fibrosis/scarring ___-etc but rarely sterilization. Also keep in mind there are two tubes and in doing so the chances of complications are very high. Once a tissue dies it turns out a source for infection which is mostly life threatening (peritonitis). So in theory it is impossible to sterilize hundreds by such method. In Lanka a rumor becomes fact. A doctor turns a monger. And myth is way to persecute others.

    Dear Grusha,
    .
You have said, “This Consultant is equal to our President who knew but did nothing.”
    .
Yes, it happens all the time; variations in severity, publicity, etc. I have a friend who will tell me that I should have put this comment below the article about the Embilipitiya District Judge, which for some unfathomable reason has a photograph of the new Chief Justice. It’s about “Hate Speech”.
    .
I have given an account of something very similar towards the tail of comments on this article:
    .
    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/national-introspection-in-the-aftermath/
    .
I made a complaint about hate messages sent through a WhatsApp Group connected with S. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela. The message was sent by a guy named Sasanka Nirmal Basnayake. The “Supervising Consultant” in this instance was the Headmaster of the school; a humbug named Christopher Balraj, usually found in the Fancy Dress of an Anglican Priest. I made the complaint (finally) on Thursday, May 23rd, about 5.00 p.m. Reference: “I got my complaint recorded: CIB 47205/209.” I have written there in bold. I can now add(after referring my smart phone that it was taken down by constable Ajith Basnayake No 47205. (Yes, the number of Basnayakes involved was wryly commented on)
    .
Sasanka Basnayake, Christopher Balraj and I had been summoned. Only I had turned up. I travelled down to Maharagama on the Friday, was with my family in Matugama, when I received a phone call from an Inspector Bandara in Bandarawela asking when I could come up to Bandarawela to meet the two whom I had accused. He called me from 078 344 5078 I called him back from my 071 8088 263 to his 070 205 0813. Time: 4.12 p.m. Details not important, but to show authenticity.
    .
So, we met, Inspector, Sasanka Basnayake and me on Wednesday, the 29th, about 11.00 a.m. it became. But the humbug priest did not come.
    .
    Happens all the time.

If GMOA read this article will have two conflicting moods.

They will be very happy spoiling a political candidacy who had 50,000 votes in his lap that will not favor the GMOA Padeniya’s backing political party Pohottuwa.

Other think that burn their stomach is about the allegations against the SHO (not the VOG) that will direct ultimately the blame to VOGs.

This will reveal several financial misconduct of VOGs not the SHOs in return.

The big question that will come out bout the earning of VOGs and whethe they pay due portion of the income tax.

To understand this in detail Let’s draft a basic income tax balance sheet of a VOG.

    1. Private consultation of VOG on a daily basis exceed 100 pregnant ladies with a fees of rupees 1,500 each amounting to daily rupees 150,000

    2. Assuming 4 cissarian surgeries minimum on a daily bases with a fee amounting to rupees 35,000 each 140,000 rupees daily.

Combining 1 and 2 above amounts to around 300,000 per day with will result in annual income of 300,000 x 365 days amounting to 109,500,000 (109 million rupees)

If we consider 20% income tax then from each vog the country should get 20 million rupees per unnum. If we consider we have minimum 150 VOGs in the whole country then the resulting income tax only from the VOGs private practice should be rupees 3 billions.

The question is are we getting at least 10% of the tax income from these VOGs.

Answer is simply no. They don’t give receipts for the service they provide.

Can we detect those corruption by income tax authorities? Definitely yes.

Let’s wait and see whether this curroption of VOGs come out or going under the carpet.

So your calculations include all public and weekends holydays too. Do you think the VOG are robots to work like that. Why aren’ t you talk about the politicians and the businesmen who cheat on incometax? You can easily calcultate the conaultants earnings because its transparent and mind you I am pretty much sure they pay at least 75% of the due. At least they work endless nights and sacrifice their life to earn that. Do you think doing private practice after four until mid night is a joke. Its hard earned money sacrficing the best tine of life after spending more than 15 years studing to attain that level. So nobody can calculate a doctors income and say its unfair
If so the gove can prohibit private practice and all can be treated in public sectors with a never ending waiting list
Docotors are happy to give up the private practice privided that govenment treat them correct with all the fascilities allocated for that level staff officer
      Thanks

The paranoia continues in Sri Lanka. From the wheel of a ship being called Dharma Chakra, to doctors being accused of sterilization, the discrimination of Muslims continue. threats of Sharia law, Buddhist monks throwing a tantrum and going on a fast (it’s the season of fasting anyway), and fake news on social media swirling about Muslims, Halal (most not knowing the meaning), horror stories of Muslims who make up of 8 percent of the population, taking over the country and the majority of 70 percent Buddhists, and converting them forcibly, an impossible feat, but still the naive believe the impossible. We read about impending attacks on temples, and schools, and seen the warning about attacks THAT NEVER HAPPENED. Who are these low life scumbags who are deliberately spreading news that make the Muslims look bad?
    All part of the plan.
PERHAPS THE INVESTIGATORS SHOULD FOCUS ON THEM TOO, AND ARREST THEM,
FOR SPREADING HATE, AND CAUSING FEAR.

No one speaks out to protect the innocent, no one condemns the discrimination.
Friends who enjoyed the Ramadan feast and the Wattalapan shared by their Muslim friends, are no longer friends, and colleagues are too busy to speak up for their own, maybe they are also suspicious of their Muslim colleagues.

That poor woman who innocently wore a garment with a ship’s wheel, obviously did not realize exactly what it was. Muslims do not wear religious symbols, so obviously she deliberately did not wear this garment to insult anyone. She should have been released the moment it was established that it was simply a shipping wheel. What a horrible nightmare for her.

Sinhala mobs are known to react viciously to malicious rumors about sweets that make women barren, the “goolies” in food that make Buddhist impotent, and Halal has become a bad word. Beef is not sold in some areas (we are becoming India) Muslims are rudely refused to be served in shops, and Uber and Tuk-Tuk drivers refuse to transport them.

Thank you Grusha Andrews for initiating this discussion, alluding to the work habits, ethical conduct, earnings and the like of Gynaecologists. Hopefully this should lead to public washing of work habits of every Lankan particularly the exclusive Lankan Elites.
    .
In paragraph 1, Grusha has the revelation by a ‘putrid professor for Rajarata University’, {“……and others have known of this atrocity for quite the while and waited for the opportune moment for themselves to “reveal“ it……..”}.
The opportune moment to reveal is ‘after the event’.
We heard this before. After the ‘tragedy’ that was the 2019 Easter Sunday, hundreds have claimed pre-knowledge! The time to reveal was after the ‘tragedy’. And worse, some cunningly squeezing political capital.
Is Dr Shafi Siyabdeen being crucified, for what is common in ‘abortion debate’, because he is on the wrong side of the infamous Lankan language/religion-divide?
PS: The ‘tragedy’ is a heinous ‘terrorist act’.
Compare Shafi with Gnanasara Thero. The latter was freed with some 600 others on amnesty. Gnanasara is involved in anti-Muslim activities including the 2014 Aluthgama Pogrom. He fits the internationally accepted definition of ‘Terrorist’. But top Lankan political leaders are queueing for his patronage.
    The dire need is even-handedness.

If the majority community is not propagating enough to keep the numbers moving governments since late 60s should take the responsibility. They are the people who asked us to have small families, use contraceptives provided cheap condoms not Dr Shafie. Illegal abortions are it is said 1000 per day. Who perform them? Doctors. GMOA is silent.Any way if we practice Buddhism as preached all Buddhists will attain Nibbana and vanish from earth.

If not the experts the common people should ask as to why this Muslim doctor allegedly sterilised only about 5% of over 4000 mothers he attended to. If his motive was to destroy the Sinhalese wombs why would he leave out other 95% unscathed, who were presumably Sinhala mothers.

Can we please return to our common sense. Pl can the editors’ guilt request their so called journalists to ask this question from those who are trying to crucify this man,?

“Can we please return to our common sense. “

Sorry No, we are little islanders. We do not make rational and informed decisions. Our emotions govern us, we rage 24/7/52 hence we do not use our wisdom to lead us.

First we crucify all accused of misbehaviour, mob justice meted out …… after a lapse of time our middle class either use all kind of languages to justice what happened or reluctantly say we saved them.

To hell with common sense, justice, rationalism, wisdom, ………….. let the lynching mob rule the day as we have done since 1958.

SLCOG Is not the highest body that regulates the descipline of doctors. It is the srilanka medical council that acts as the watch dog of medical professional. If there is any complain against any doctor, it has to be lodged at the SLMC which will then take further necessary action.
Most part of the article reflects how ignorant the writer is.
My question is, why weren’t these allegations brought up before the Easter attacks? Why now ? And Dr shafi is innocent until proven otherwise. All 400 women who think that they were made infertile by this doctor should go to SLMC and Lodge a complain and then you get answers for all your assumption and presumptions.

“Most part of the article refects how ignorant the writer is”

I disagree. I do not know whether Grusha has a medical background or not. She certainly portrayed a believable picture of the machinations of VOGs. VOGs who were in my time in Kurunegala were multi-millioners.
You are right though with regard to the diciplinary procedure against a doctor. SLMC should take the centre stage.
However, Grusha was right to question the moral conduct of SLCOG if they have any morality left at this Juncture.

Please show where it is written that SLCOG is the highest body that regulates the discipline of doctors? You need to read the article before making false comments like that.
SLCOG is the apex body for the DISCIPLINE of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The word discipline has two meanings.

This is a good intervention by Grusha Andrews because it calls for a formal investigation, deplores the long silence of various authorities on a matter creating panic in the pubic mind, and points out reasons why the allegations may be false. But this balanced intervention is completely corrupted by the opening passage:-

“(T)he infamous Dr Shafi Siyabdeen who has allegedly caused unconsented infertility in 4000 mothers. Whatever the truth of that allegation may be, it is obvious that Dr Shafi was involved in a money laundering exercise . . . it won’t be a huge surprise if Dr Shafi was resurrected from the death of his profession and was made Governor of the Eastern Province tomorrow”

Siyabdeen is convicted as “infamous” in the opening sentence; it is asserted that “it is obvious” he “was involved in money laundering”; and shameless anti-Muslim dirt is thrown in the remark about “Governor of the Eastern Province”. Phew, conviction before trail in apiece demanding investigation!!

It is such a shame that, as Hamlet says, “a dram of eale doth all the noble substance of a doubt
to his own scandal”. Meaning the whole of Andrews’ piece is spoiled by the prejudiced opening.

Yes, I agree with you there, Professor David. I, too was puzzled by the writer’s opening passage, + wondered if I had missed some proven information about the doctor that she has access to.

But the main thrust of her article still stands, + I hope it receives sufficient publicity to compel the relevant elements in the medical profession to respond to its urgings.

        Author started with this sentence
        First thing first.

I have no intention of white washing the infamous Dr Shafi Siyabdeen ”

She wants the process done properly. She is one of those, who is believing the doctor is guilty. I don’t see lot of problem with that.

Prof. Kumar insisted on single issue CC. Those who recommended New Clown marketed him as an angel. Old King said “Known devil is better than unknown angel”. We kept writing on these pages that he was the White Flag Murderer – War Criminal. Many insisted that it was not proved. Now what?

Now things have gone upside down. Prof. Kumar accepts it. But he still has an urge to redo it. Can we afford to fly on his idea again?

The tigress knows the pain but still time and again, seeks the tiger.

        Manel Fonseka
        GA’s opening passage is unambiguous.
She has clearly used the words ‘alleged uncontested infertility to 4000 mothers’, and said whatever the worth of the allegation is.
So what is puzzling about that?

          UTHUNGAN

Yes, she has used the words ‘alleged’ + ‘allegations’ of certain accusations but she has also made two very negative statements about the doctor.
One is: ‘I have no intention of whitewashing the INFAMOUS Dr Shafi Siyabdeen.’
The other: ‘…it is OBVIOUS that Dr Shafi was involved in a money laundering exercise….’

She appears to have made up her mind about the money laundering + has decided that he is infamous even before the charges have been properly investigated as she is rightly calling for.
I had noticed these discrepancies when I posted my first comment but as I supported the rest of her article I decided to overlook them.

But in these uncertain and insidious times, any combination of outcomes seem possible.
      Thank you.

Fallopian Tubes: Dr David, let me start by saying, that I wish that I had Dr. Safi as the Gynecologist of my wife. But that is not possible for temporal reasons. Dr. Safi (our hero) was perhaps not even born at that time. So, Dr. Vishwanathan, a Tamil instead of a Muslim or a Sinhala Buddhist was our Gynecologist and he would have eaten me alive if I had so much as mentioned the words ‘fallopian tubes’. He was that tough.
      .
If there is one thing that I wished in my life, it was not to father any children. There were too many them in the world already, making it a miserable place. In fact I strongly wished that I had never got married. I consider, even now, marriage to be like a Public Toilet. Those outside are trying to get in as quickly as possible, while those inside want to get out as fast as possible.
      .
Anyway, having being pushed by circumstances to get married, I hoped that I would be at least lucky not to have any kids and took precautions. But alas! My wife manipulated things as she usually does, and before I could utter the words ‘Aiyo Sirisena’, we had a baby girl child in our hands. I must admit that I found the little thing rather cute, even smiling at me after a few weeks. But I knew the mother and I knew the daughter, which means that I knew that all these were just manipulations to trap me.
      .
To cut a long story short, I wish we had a Dr Safi at that time, who would have known my needs and provided the required services without me having to even mention the words ‘fallopian tubes’.

Andrews can suggest, additionally, because this has become a high profile case and two races’ relationship is alo dragged into it, Hospital should give him compulsory leave and pay back with arrears if he is proven not guilty.

The difficulty I have is why his wife is being investigated. If he is a hospital doctor aren’t they two must be independent employees. It was not a private abortion clinic for to connect their actions together.

We had a Buddhist P*KKA doctor and coroner (The word P*KKA as quoted by Vadudeva Nanayakkara in Parliament and a Hansard entry) is a much heinous crime. I am referring to this SInhala doctor criminal Ananda Samarasinghe. This bastard falsified autopsy reports, then covered up a murder and even lied to the CID amidst a criminal and homicide investigation with the Thajudeen muder case. what f’ing morality do you expect from the Sinhala Buddhist P*KKAYA’s. They all should be slaughter and blown into smithereens including the GMOA Mafia made of criminals. What waste that this lunatic named Zaharan to have targeted poor, innocent and defenseless church goers while the immoral p*kaya’s should have been the target starting from the Mahanayake pambayas, the saffron robe terrorist including Rathna Thera and the bloody shameless Cheevara monkeys of the BBS, Ravana and Mahason etc. “Kill them all wherever you find them” should have been the rallying cry of the IS in order to get rid of these traitors, our saffron robe terrorists and the Carlton bandits who are behind these anti communal riots. They all must be must be held criminally liable for creating and nurturing these Islamic extremists and the Buddhist Thaliban including the GOAT and K*rry Sena. Wipe all these f’rs and this country will be a liberated, so that the rule of law can be enforced and implemented.

Fallopian tubes compression is more effective and acceptable than the white van murders.

To silence the Nation, now is the time to round up all the whistle blowers and silence them permanently. I won’t be surprised if the killer squad starts its operation whistle blowers soon.

This is a shocking revelation to many especially to the medical community. However, if we simplify the story there is a doctor alleged to have commited heineous act of crime by deliberatly traumatising womans Fallopian tubes during Caesarean section hoping to minimise her chances of getting pregnant again. When there is an allegation of such nature comes to light the sensible action would be temporary suspension of the doctor and impartial adequate inquiry find the truth about the allegation. If he is found to be commited the unlawful act it will be a criminal case. However if there are no proper grounds for this allegation and if it is found to be a hoax the doctor will get an opportunity to clear his name and reputation.
This could be nothing and it could be some one is making a mountain out of a mole hole.On the other hand this could be a secretly done widespread practise of ethnic cleansing by religious fanatics. If that is the case Safi could be just the tip of the ince burg.
It is a difficult one to judge due to the subtlity and sensitivity of the isuue. No opinion of any professional body would help as one can either prove or refute this kind of allegation by giving opinions. An inquiry done properly will bring many facts related to this allegation into light.
SLCOG or GMOA are not reponsible for providig opinions for incidents like this and it is the responsibilty of the ministry to investigate this further.
Theese professional bodies are for a diffrent purpose and they are not there to give opinions for the mishaps of every Tom Dick and Harry.
Lot has been written about this issue bymany individuals but as anexperianced gynecologist I cannot see the technical difficulty of doing the alleged act.We check Fallopian tubes during Casearean and this can be done while they are iside te abdomen.

      Priya
I am glad that atleast you had the courage to state your expert opinion on crushing the fallopian tubes (FT) in this discussion.

“SLCOG or GMOA are not reponsible for providig opinions for incidents like this and it is the responsibilty of the ministry to investigate this further”

Honestly, who give two hoots about GMOA, Pariah among the dedicated doctors like you serving in Srilanka.

Dr Shafi was practicing under the supervision of VOG who is ultimately responsible for the patients. Therefore, I disagree with your view that SLCOG can wash their hands off when one their member (VOG) is guilty of serious misconduct.

why this allegations have come during a period of communal tensions?

Have seen or heard any of the victims had a hysterosalpingography to substantiate their claim of blocked FT?

There are so many unanswered questions in this debate. There is natural animosity among other communities about the choices of child bearing among Muslim community in my opinion. But, your defence of the allegatioms remind me of the story of Jesus preventing the stoning of prostitute.

What moral right do we have to blame a junior doctor who has done more than 4000 caesarian sections while his supervisor was doing private practice and enjoing the perks?

One such VOG in Kurunegala had a young mistress as a value addition to his portfolio, thanks to his junior’s hard work.

This is a bloody election gimmick, gamarala is the culprit , he might do more damage than July 83. The whole clan Mara , Wimal the pimp Gota are provoking racial hatred to win the election. The riots and this incident is taking place in Kurunegala district
Big brother Mara has his supporters here. Srilanka has gone to dogs , the consultant and the president of SLCOG should be strangled with Fallopian tubes.

Rusha you are perfect once again except perhaps as already said about this poor doctor’s allegation of being a money launderer. None of the claims have been proved so far or not even gone near anywhere. This is just mass hysteria that our country never short of. They are talented not to think, not to analyse, not to question but to simply believe. Gullible society is only a mild version. We had grease yakka, Dwarf yakka, Kotti Friday to name a fraction. In fact late Amitha Abeysekara referred to sinhala veerayas as “runner sinhas” after the kotti friday and how they bolted after hearing that kotti had arrived in Colombo. In fact I have personal experience of how a few even swearing that they saw them and in fact some claimed that they looked like aliens. One fellow promised me that he saw these aliens were chasing after a military vehicle and as expected the veerayas were running for their lives. I saw with my very eyes how the fools were running, with their sarama and sarees lifted along Galle road. Some were ever perched over speeding car. We are a very interesting and a funny bunch of people. Believe any nonsense as long as it is not possible. If I say there is no Holman (ghost) they won’t believe. If I say there is Holman then they will believe. This is how we as a race have been brought up. Naturally this poor Muslim doctor got involved in this mess by chance or because of his possible bragging. It is nothing doctors boast of the number of procedures done to improve their image and experience and invariably inflate the number. This is like flying hours for pilots. But they have to keep a log book of all their procedures besides other official registers, etc. So it is very simple to find out how many procedures this doctor had done at Kurnunagala..
    contd…..

Contd….. And more importantly what his supervising doctor was doing? Doctors are worst vultures next to politicians in SL. They are a bunch of total exploiters and they perform unwanted surgeries, investigations, etc. to make more money and support the private institutions. They come to government hospitals to just relax, mostly.

The SHO faces the brunt of it and if they are trainees then they have to dance to their tunes. As already said even otherwise it is a symbiotic relationship. The colleges etc are there to protect their shortcomings and thus keeping out of the fray because they become more liable and responsible if things are inquired into. Unless proved otherwise every doctor is a exploiter. They are just like our dirty politicians. The GMOA does not want Ministry inquiry. Then whom? Do they want Gnanasara or Gamanpulle to inquire. Come on morons. Otherwise call some foreign doctors to come and inquire. Now the jokers accept what the Tamils have been asking for so long. They are not prepared to believe their own kind, their own justice system. Judges and legal officers are sending out racial postings on social media. Now the Sinhala lawyers are backing from defending the victims? Or what a tragic situation? We are not here to pass judgment. I neither say that the doctor is guilty or not guilty. Now that such a serious allegation is made against him it has to be thoroughly investigated. All and entire circumstances surrounding this incident ought to be investigated. They thing being a minority they just can do anything they please. Is this our Dhamma? Is this what Lord Buddha taught us? Just calling as a Buddhist country and a Buddhist people is of no use at all.

Is Crusha getting upset for nothing?..
When Our Yahapalana Health Minister told the whole world that the Muslim Gyno is all clean, implying that no snipping of the Fallpean Tubes of our poor rural Sinhala Buddhist and Catholic women..

In fact the Yahapalana Health Minister went even further to remind our inhabitants that if it was a Sinhala Buddhist Gyno who did that ,the media couldn’t have cared less….

What puzzles me about that is, Moslim women don’t go to our Sinhala Quacks sorry Doctors even to get some Cough Mix, let lone letting their Fallopian tubes snipped.

The Health Minister apparently told the Kurunagala Health Director to go easy on Safi, because it is not good for Dr Ranil’s Samhindiyawaf if Dr Safi gets shafted.

Can this Gynecology College Dudes go above the almighty Yahapalana Health Minister?…

    Grusha Andrews

I’m in difficulty , whether to like or dislike what you say.

As a matter of fact, there’s a degradation of attitudes in almost all institutions/professional/semi-professional bodies in the country.

Take for example, teachers; there’re such shameless idiots that invite their own students in the school class to his/her private tuition in the evening for a fee.

Compare it with the past, where our teachers volunteered for extra work @ their own expense after school.

Parents degradation as well is there to contribute for it without taking the gravity into the consideration.

But the extent of degradation being exhibited by actions of this Dr. shafi?

I dislike your writing as it throws a bit of consolation for a probable culprit.

All the problems of the past thirty years – were due to the Tamils.
All the problems for the next thirty years – will be due to the Muslims.

By that time, due to the valiant effort of people like Dr. Shafi, the Sinhala population would have dwindled down to abut 33.33%.

    What a beautiful Island it would be – 1/3 Tamil-1/3 Muslims-1/3 Sinhala.

I vote Dr. Shafi for the Nobel Peace Price – for starting this extraordinary revolution for permanent peace in Sri Lanka.
