Sri Lanka Is The 9th Most Dangerous Country In The World

Using data from the Geneva Declaration’s latest report, London- based Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) infographic reveals surprising facts about the global burden of armed violence. Half a million people die violent deaths every year, but only one in 10 is killed in conflict zones, according to the infographic released June 25, 2013.  El Salvador is the most dangerous country in the world, followed by Iraq. Sri Lanka is listed as the ninth most dangerous country.

The Global Burden of Armed Violence reports, released on 2008 and 2011, take an integrated approach to the complex and volatile dynamics of armed violence around the world, bringing into sharp focus the wide-ranging costs of conflict and crime on development.

Indeed better to stick to your heavily censored, sycophantic and sinhala-nationalist-buddhist friendly domestic press helpfully cleared of ‘pests’ like Prageeth Eknaligoda, Lasantha Wickrematunge and Frederica Jansz. Or are you thinking Sri Lankans safe in today’s society with Gotabhaya ‘Matale mass grave’ Rajapaksa and Duminda ‘multiple homicide’ SIlva safely ensconced in the govt ranks

Countries with [violent] death rates over 30 per 100,000 population 2004-2009

    :-)
Not surprisingly, most of those are “direct conflict deaths” (courtesy of the erstwhile Sole Representatives of the Tamils (C)(R)(TM) ) according to the report.

No doubt Sri Lanka’s ranking today would bitterly disappoint the LTTE diaspora.

Are you one of these intellectuals who likes to class whole ethnic groups together according to political belief in order to avoid giving yourself headaches? Sorry to burst your bubble but there are many educated Tamils who did not think too greatly of Prabha’s methods like killing Indian PM, civilian bombings, expulsion of muslims and vote-rigging etc. You may recall many Tamil nationalist politicians dying at the hands of LTTE? Secondly do you some medical affliction that makes you deaf, blind and dumb or are you really thinking Sri Lanka is a free and safe place to live? By deaf, I assume you have not heard of confirmed murderers like Duminda Silva still at large to menace the public? By blind, I assume you have not read Amnesty International’s latest report on Sri Lanka 2012 (3 years after Prabha demise) with the lead title ‘There are no human rights in Sri Lanka’ -“In Sri Lanka, a climate of intolerance and fear continues to sweep the island as the government’s stranglehold on the population grows ever tighter”. This was the same organisation Mahinda Rajapaksa suggested should visit Sri Lanka in 1990 to investigate disappearance of JVP youth by UNP govt. By dumb, you do not believe Rajapaksa bros stirring up bodu sena to whip up hatred of muslims, encourage boycotts and engage in arson & looting will not lead to a tense climate which could easily spill over to mass communal riots? (of the type that engulfed Tamils in 1958, 1977 & 1983)?

That’s nice dear. To have been licking ones lips at the prospect of Sri Lanka being “The 9th Most Dangerous Country In The World”, reading all the ‘stats’ and preparing the “I told you so!” speech, only to be rudely awakened from that wet dream by the first few comments, what a disappointment that must have been :-) Are you by chance one of the LTTE monkeys I mentioned in the first post?

Yes there are ‘many’ Tamils who are against the LTTE, but it’s usually the LTTE monkeys who get worked up when these kinds of articles fall flat – and looking at your, er, contributions here, you do seem awfully worked up :-)

Ramanan, what in the world are you talking about? Siva Sankaran Sarma said the “LTTE” diaspora or the one’s that still want separation in Sri Lanka. He did in no way state or used the word Tamil diaspora, who to this day assist the thousands of people in the North and East of the country by providing aid and logistical assistance rather than sitting in a room on your laptop trying to troll around on an article which makes no sense as its published after 5 years from the initial collection of data. Mind you, rather than picking fights kindly assist the many men and women in our nation that are recovering from a cruel and unjust conflict. Thank you and good day to you Sir!

Ninth most dangerous ? There must be some mistake.
If killings of persons held in custody of the state is quantified for all countries,Sri Lanka will be near the top.
27 Welikada prisoners were “executed” recently,in cold blood.
A man arrested recently by police, had died next morning – immediately, police said that he died “of a heart attack”!!
Even the postmortem examination had not been done – even if it had been done, the details are, nowadays – for past few decades – kept a secret.
Strangely, even lawyers for the victims do not demand these, though these details are the most important evidence, in murder cases.
We have the most strange legal fraternity!!
In the old days, reading of the postmortem report by the medical officer was the first item on the first day of any murder trial.
The postmortem report of Lasantha Wickrematunge is still not divulged.
Same of Bharatha Luxman Premachandra whose body had 42 bullet wounds according to his daughter – the police produced ONE gun after one month to court!!
If the number of “bodyguards” per politician is quantified, sri lanka will be near the top – this is called “security”.

These stats does not provide the real picture. The data was collected from 2004 to 2009 during which the civil war was at it’s peak. after 2010, the rate has drastically reduced and if the data were collected from 2010 to the present date, the picture will turn upside down. Now SL is one of the best countries to tour to and live in according to most of the surveys done by National Geographic, Discovery etc. So nothing to worry here everyone :)

GJ writes: “Now SL is one of the best countries to tour to and live in according to most of the surveys done by National Geographic, Discovery etc. So nothing to worry here everyone”

So are you using leisure and digital media organisation endorsements as proof of Sri Lanka being ‘one of the best’ places to live in for people like Duminda Silva’s victims and all the nameless sinhala & tamil youths Gotabhaya ordered killed during his illustrious military and political career (with brief exile as economic refugee in USA)? I thought you might be more interested to read Amnesty International’s latest report 2013 ”There are no human rights in Sri Lanka’ which gives several damning assessments of SL’s domestic situation including In Sri Lanka, a climate of intolerance and fear continues to sweep the island as the government’s stranglehold on the population grows ever tighter. Remember this was the same organisation enthusiastically promoted by a young sinhala MP called Mahinda Rajapaksa in 1990 when he tabled questions in parliament asking whether this organisation could visit Sri Lanka

infographic released 2013, data is from 2011. if you all were able to use your literacy skills, maybe you’d analyze the information given to you write on the graph. Seems like Sri Lanka’s education numbers are going down or something considering the lack of critical skills displayed in the comment sections. War ended in 2009, therefore the data would look differently and Sri Lanka would be ranked higher on the scale–only logical people who have proper analytical skills are able to come to this conclusion unfortunately, common sense is unfortunately not common.

“logical people who have proper analytical skills are able to come to this conclusion unfortunately, common sense is unfortunately not common”

By ‘logical’ people do you mean the mad arsonists/sabre-rattling/public disorder creating monks of the Bodu Sena which form the vanguard of the ‘sinhala-nationalist-buddhist’ movement?

“Seems like Sri Lanka’s education numbers are going down”

Will you be lodging a complaint then about the cheating antics of Namal Rajapaksa at his law college exams when he was allowed online access to finish his paper instead of relying on memory like the other normal students?

“Any idiot with a computer can publish news these days but a real journalists are those who write sensibly.”

Unfortunately many of the ‘real’ journalists have been successfully eradicated by the idiot Gotabhaya (who learnt computer skills whilst earning his green card in USA) which is why organisations like the ‘Committee to Protect Journalists’ CPJ has released damning reports about Sri Lankan media including the statistic that Sri Lanka has 23 journalists in exile in 2012 and which it ranked 4th in the whole world in its ‘Impunity Index Rating: 0.431 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants’ worse than all other South Asian nations

I lost confidence in CT after reading this article. They claim to be what the local media are not but reading this made me think otherwise.

Another silly article with a controversial statistic. The whole of Sri Lanka is much safer than certain parts of big cities in the West. These cities include Rio De Janeiro, Paris, Los Angeles, Harlem (New York City), Malmo (Sweden), Damascus (Syria)…. these places are dangerous at any time of the day. They are known as “no-go areas”, unless you are a gangster or slum dweller.

There appear to be other studies that contradict this ranking. For example, the homicide rate in SL (per 100,000 inhabitants) at 3.6 is well below that of USA (4.8) and not far from India (3.5).
According to this study SL ‘s position in world homicide rates is well over 115.

I know this is nothing to boast about as SL should be aiming for 0 rate.

Is this one of the reasons why ICC did not allocate any significant
international Cricket matches to Sri Lanka in the next 10 years? The other, of course, is the fact despite astronomical earnings by our Cricketers BCCSL continuously cooks her books to show she is broke.
Or is it from a study of the established pecuniary records of those who head the Board. One was a man found guilty of Stock Market frauds, with his son tagging along. If our laws were clean the man should have been behind bars for a long stay. One would have thought India leads the world in having crooks leading the Board but, clearly, we are not far behind.

Sri Lanka has one of the highest “state” sponsored killings around the World. And this is even depressing as when one is killed by a a civilan who is a thug, drug addict etc. We did not have this kind of open “State” killings even during the Bandaranaike regime or the other. We also have one of the most corrupted Governments. But this should be normal taking into consideration that the majority of Sri Lankans, who are Sinhalese possess no education and have an IQ the size of a Pin head.

Most dangerous at present is the contract killings of people for money and political power. Latest information reveals that the contracts are being undertaken even by police high ranking officers as well as armed forces in Sri Lanka.Impunity is the another crime that is being committed by political power holders. The Pradeshia and Palth Saba members are being fearlessly involved in various kinds of crimes in the country with the patronage of the Government. It was a wrong calculation of putting Sri Lanka at nine. It must be less than that.
