Sri Lanka – The Comedy Of Asia!

By Sharmini Serasinghe

Sharmini Serasinghe

Once again, we see yet another version of a ‘Comedy of Errors’ unfolding on the political stage of Sri Lanka.

Over the years, this stage has seen many a comic performance, enacted by comedians of all hues, but the current scene takes the cake. Its title ‘Good Governance’ aka ‘Yahapalana’ is a joke in itself, and seemed fanciful, right from the start.

In a country where daylight robbers, drug lords, rapists, child molester, murders et al call the shots, and are seemingly above the law, with many masquerading as politicians, how on earth can there be Good Governance?

Civil society, the clergy, the media and a handful of honest citizens are shouting themselves hoarse, calling to rid the stage of these political dregs. This is indeed long overdue, but given the quality of politicians we are left to choose from, and with ‘Messrs. Honest/Clean Citizen’ in society refusing to get their hands dirty in the stinking mire of politics, what are we left with?

We have a former President; a onetime hero but today perceived as a villain by many, who cooked his goose on 8th January 2015, and now, hell bent on burning it to cinders, with a comeback on to the political stage. Honestly, has this man no self-respect?

And from what appears on the surface, the incumbent is spinning around at a dizzying speed, undecided if he’s to grant nominations to his bête noire Mahinda Rajapaksa or not.

MaithripalaIf this alleged villain Mahinda Rajapaksa, is guilty of all what he has been accused of; corruption, abuse of power, attacks on the media, human rights violations, plunder and waste of public wealth, election malpractices etc., then why bring him back to the political stage? Is it in the best interest of the country, and good governance?

Some will argue, let him return and let the voter decide. But at what cost to the rest of us, and the country as a whole?

There are many myopic nitwits out there, who are still awestruck by ‘nice roads, pavements, parks, buildings etc.’, and believe they were built with the private funds of the Rajapaksas. Fortunately these are but a tiny, insignificant minority, confined mainly to the cocktail circuit, comprising the local version of the Joneses in Colombo, who believe it’s beneath their dignity, to stand in a queue, rubbing shoulders with the common man, to cast their vote. So, they don’t vote!

And then there are those, still on reverse gear, waving the flag, “He won the war”! Hasn’t “He” been appreciated and thanked enough for that?

This saga of, to give or not to give nominations to Mahinda Rajapaksa, is now turning into a joke. It’s making many people dizzy and utterly confused, not knowing where they stand with this man Maithripla Sirisena, who they voted for.

As the first citizen of this country, it is high time he got his priorities right, and took a decision once and for all: country first, and not his party first. He cannot eat the cake and have it too.

We have had enough of a daily dose of speculative and conflicting news reports stating “reportedly Mahinda Rajapaksa has been granted/denied nominations………” President Sirisena has so far, failed to make his stand on this matter clear to the public, and is thus being regarded as “spineless”.

From what appears to be, President Sirisena has a master card, tucked up his pristine white sleeve, and couldn’t care less, about the names he’s being called, nor what he’s being accused of.

There is also the possibility that President Sirisena might be looking at the bigger picture; to bury Rajapaksa politically once and for all. This indeed would be a national service. But how he plans to do it, only time will tell!

After all, this is the meek and mild looking man, who shared a meal of hoppers with his arch rival, and pulled the rug under his feet the next day. He appears to be one of those players, who just when you think it’s all over, pulls a rabbit out of the hat. This is definitely a fox in sheep’s clothing!

All those alleged corrupt deals under the Rajapaksa government that were bandied around so freely, in the not too distant past, and then quickly tucked away perhaps for ‘future use’, seem to have been only a mere tool, to whet the wrath of the people.

After all, though the system may require the corrupt to be proven guilty before a court of law, once the seed of doubt and suspicion has been sown in the minds of the people, they become their own Judge and Jury. And by the time the wheels of Justice start rolling, the guilty will by then, be pushing daisies.

Hence, in all probability, what we are seeing now, is major political psyops at play.

To the detached, these are indeed interesting times!

Sri Lanka – The Comedy Of Asia!

*** I remember the last time we crossed swords it was when you wrote that you voted for Percy when he gave hope to the Nation that he will rid the Country of Evil ie the blight of Terrorism. But you were disappointed that it was done clumsily meaning that it could have been done without the sight of bodies being strewn across all over Nanthikadal. I took exception to the choice of words as it was painful for any Tamil to bear. Then there was the Womens Brigade which brought about the downfall of Percy whereas it was the Tamil vote which dethroned the King.
My criticisms didn’t go down well as you had a big fan club which I put down to Fatal Attraction. For me the message is important than the messenger but for many it was the other way round.

As for the topic on hand I give you Credit for your honesty and let us analyse.

Let me start by saying that Sri Lanka has been a Laughing Stock of the World for some time and with the election of MS there was a Modicum of hope that this would change.
I remember when MS paid a visit to London and met her Majesty there were some Tamils who were pretesting outside and the Queen Quipped ” Don’t they know that there is a New Government is in place in Sri Lanka and a new Order. Little did she know the nature of Sri Lankan society and how hope has turned into despair and happiness has turned into sorrow.
MS with a Masterstroke has turned all this into a Flash in the Pan. But this is a blessing in disguise for the Tamils and I am sure you are clever enough to work it out.

    1) Over the years, this stage has seen many a comic performance, enacted by comedians of all hues, but the current scene takes the cake. Its title ‘Good Governance’ aka ‘Yahapalana’ is a joke in itself, and seemed fanciful, right from the start.

***This is a materialistic world and everything depends on what is in it for me or should I say what is in it for the Majority.

    2) In a country where daylight robbers, drug lords, rapists, child molester, murders et al call the shots, and are seemingly above the law, with many masquerading as politicians, how on earth can there be Good Governance?

*** You are wrong. There is Good Governance and don’t forget these are all classed as War winning heroes and they need to be protected whatever the Crime and these are known as collateral damage which can be tolerated.

    3) We have a former President; a onetime hero but today perceived as a villain by many, who cooked his goose on 8th January 2015, and now, hell bent on burning it to cinders, with a comeback on to the political stage. Honestly, has this man no self-respect?

*** Can you blame him. He is still the darling of the Majority of the Majority. Without the Tamil vote he will still be riding high.

    4) And from what appears on the surface, the incumbent is spinning around at a dizzying speed, undecided if he’s to grant nominations to his bête noire Mahinda Rajapaksa or not.

*** I have already said this and the clue was in the Speeches made by the incumbent. He pledged to protect MR and he is Estopped from going back.

    5) Maithripala If this alleged villain Mahinda Rajapaksa, is guilty of all what he has been accused of; corruption, abuse of power, attacks on the media, human rights violations, plunder and waste of public wealth, election malpractices etc., then why bring him back to the political stage? Is it in the best interest of the country, and good governance?

*** Can you not see the Nation ( 5.8) is crying out for MR to come to finish the Job he started ie Colonisation as people like Dayan fear that the Tamils might be granted Self Governance not out of the Goodness of their heart but due to outside pressure.

    6) Some will argue, let him return and let the voter decide. But at what cost to the rest of us, and the country as a whole?

*** It is winner takes all.

    7) And then there are those, still on reverse gear, waving the flag, “He won the war”! Hasn’t “He” been appreciated and thanked enough for that?

*** That is the problem. You have hit the nail on its head. He is a War winning Criminal and the Nation is eternally grateful and they are prepared to put up with his silly habits.

    8) This saga of, to give or not to give nominations to Mahinda Rajapaksa, is now turning into a joke. It’s making many people dizzy and utterly confused, not knowing where they stand with this man Maithripla Sirisena, who they voted for.

*** It might be a worry for you and me but for the Majority it is a well rehearsed Muppet Show.

    9) As the first citizen of this country, it is high time he got his priorities right, and took a decision once and for all: country first, and not his party first.

*** AS I have already said he cannot go back on his word. He is Estopped.

    10) There is also the possibility that President Sirisena might be looking at the bigger picture; to bury Rajapaksa politically once and for all. This indeed would be a national service. But how he plans to do it, only time will tell!

*** I entirely agree and if this is what he has Crafted out I will take my hat off and salute the Commander in Chief and MR can be whisked off to the HAGUE for final Burial.

    11) After all, this is the meek and mild looking man, who shared a meal of hoppers with his arch rival, and pulled the rug under his feet the next day. He appears to be one of those players, who just when you think it’s all over, pulls a rabbit out of the hat. This is definitely a fox in sheep’s clothing!

*** But what you have not said is the Hoppers was prepared by CBK and she was also the proud owner of the Rabbit.

    12) All those alleged corrupt deals under the Rajapaksa government that were bandied around so freely, in the not too distant past, and then quickly tucked away perhaps for ‘future use’, seem to have been only a mere tool, to whet the wrath of the people.

*** Do I sense an airy sigh of relief on your part that Percy is not as bad as people thought he was.

    13) After all, though the system may require the corrupt to be proven guilty before a court of law, once the seed of doubt and suspicion has been sown in the minds of the people, they become their own Judge and Jury. And by the time the wheels of Justice start rolling, the guilty will by then, be pushing daisies.
Hence, in all probability, what we are seeing now, is major political psyops at play.

    Psyops is

tactics intended to manipulate one’s opponents or enemies, such as the dissemination of propaganda or the use of psychological warfare.

*** You make it sound like a Major Spy Thriller is being enacted in Sri Lanka. I cant wait for it to be screened and no doubt it will be a Box office hit.

    14) To the detached, these are indeed interesting times:

*** One correction for the Mentally Retarded ( I mean those whose were hit by Shrapnel ) and waiting for news of the disappeared love ones these are testing times.

      Dear Kali,

The following is a vicious and diabolical lie-

“I remember the last time we crossed swords it was when you wrote that you voted for Percy when he gave hope to the Nation that he will rid the Country of Evil ie the blight of Terrorism. But you were disappointed that it was done clumsily meaning that it could have been done without the sight of bodies being strewn across all over Nanthikadal.”

Incidentally, I don’t cross swords with others, especially those without a face or a name.

I suggest you go back and re read and I am sure you have a copy of what you posted and if I have got it wrong I will apologise.
I am in sound mind and not going though a stse of Dementia.

I remember when you made an appeal for the Unfortunate Tamil Women I complemented you with the words ” You had a Heart of Gold” and contributed to the fund.

But then you dropped the Bomshell “Percy did the Job “Clumsily “and that incensed me.

In Criminal Law there is the Men Rea and Actus Reus.

In your own words what that meant was you agreed with the Mens Rea but not the Actus Reus.

My dear Lady for your information I lost 3 members of my family and I stand by what I said. What happened at Nanthikadal was a Tamil pain and from your quick rebuttal it is obvious that you are no different . I have turned out to be not Man of Steel and will reamain so for the rest of my life.

Kali is one of the vermin that reflect her sense of hate towards the writers who openly and honestly contribute to the CT. This Kali who is known from her comments is so diabolical that she reflect her own failures in her personal and public life.

She will not publish her own article in the CT by reflecting her real name. She is so confused and gutless that she only knows to behave like an illiterate goni billa or grease yakka to terrorise the writers.

Her political life started with undemocratic and mysterious values and this Kali will not understand what is basic decency in family and public life.

In her endless razzle-dazzles comes in different forms and shapes. Her behaviour is so sadistic that must her upbringing and her young age association with the so called armed redeemers.

I will face her Kaali Koothu for commenting very out rightly when I publish my next write up.

I am horrified there is more to come from you. I thought the last one was your Last One which was full of ill thought out assumptions and further more revealing your level of Intellect. when you said that India has now become Nation that believes in Dialogue with Neighbours.
What a load of Rubbish if in Doubt ask Percy the following.

          1) Who booted him out
          2) Who gave the Marching Orders to Chinese Submariens
          3) Who ordered MS to Cancel Colombo Port City Contruction.
          4) Who is in Sampur.

There are enough Pretenders in Sinhala Lanka why do they need you.

Sharmini Serasinghe is crying. Why? Just for the fact that MR is going to come for the election fray. This writer[Edited out] does not have the common sense it seems. How on earth she decides MR’s future politically or otherwise? It is upto him and the vast majority of this country to decide whether they want him back or not. And where were these so called writers when RW losing one after the other? This ‘kolombian’ woman’s lament is another case in point how popular MR is among masses. Still!

“This ‘kolombian’ woman’s lament is another case in point how popular MR is among masses. Still!”

      Max:-
This is the reason why the ‘Masses’, not the ‘Kolombians’, have to be educated on why the Rajapakses and their Cronies are not the answer to the future Prosperity of our Country, Sri Lanka.

It is true that Rajapakse prevented the Division of the Country by a bunch of Terrorists, but that does not give him the Right to Plunder and Destroy the Country he Claims to have Single Handedly saved!

He is thereby belittling the contribution of the thousands of gallant young men and women, who gave their lives to the Cause of their Motherland. The Mothers and fathers, Sisters and Brothers, of these Youth have to be reminded of the slogan, “Api Venuven Api” again and again! Not “Rajapakse Venuven Api”!

Serasinghe’s suggestion that the cocktail circuit and the would be Joneses in Colombo are MR supporters is laughable. They even rubbed shoulders with the smelly masses, to rid the nation of MR, but to what cost. The pre-elction promises were all but forgotten within hours, and the wretched plan to create massive indebtedness for 30 long years was hatched and carried out. Unfortunately it came to light implicating the ‘cleaner than clean’ fraudsters. The cocktail circuit is laughing at the stupidity of the plebs while sharing the proceeds among themselves. Perpetual Debt, the yoke around the neck of every Sri Lankan, is aptly named.

The naive ‘Royalist’ from Polonnaruwa is no leader, but he served the purpose, paying obeisance to his underling RW. If the Rajapakses, as alleged, have been thieving, the likes of loud-mouthed Ravi Karunanayake have NOT been able to produce any evidence.

The electorate HAS the right to decide who is the better from among the ‘thieves’. Let us hope that display their wisdom.

I dont want to write a whole lot of stuff-but is kali suggesting that the LTTE terrorists who killed and maimed so many thousands were the real citizens of the country and the best law &order guys?

Come on get a life.Just see how US reacted after 9/11 . How UK and australia deal with terrorists threats and suspects. How India behaves in Kashmir. How pakistan deals with terrorists.

Yeas don’t lose your cool, Its not worth. we get what we deserve, Now you see all MY3’s sinhala long speeches are just words in the wide blue sky.The man is no leader. If he had nailed Rajapakse’s at the beginning without talking about,”only one bullet for me” we may have had some faith.
He had all the evidence and ammo to throw at least two famous family members in Borella. I mean in the large prison.Even the one who went in ended up in Paying wards of National Hospital in A/C comfort. He could not even control Prime monster! he was having his own way in central bank and other key institutions, all with his friends.
The third world cheap masses want heros not just Yakapalana words and spineless zeros. So Let’s welcome the real scavenger Hero for his second term.At least things will shine and move, Salman Khan and bollywood will visit us,China and Russia will support us, and Colombo city will look flawless.I will get a car permit!

During and just before the Jan. 7th election, Sirisena went and hid in a secret place in polonnaruwa/mahiyangana.
Is he still under threat by MR’s minions?
Did fear influence his decision to allow MR’s nomination?

ms is having some trump card.. i think it is only a wishful thinking.. MS has to know that he is taking a big risk by giving nomination to MR.when he gets an opportunity he will see that MS is finished. he is totally unscrupulous according to his own words. can we assume that the voting population in SL will finish MR because of the recent revelations on his corruption.
