The Nomination Imbroglio & A Question Mark

Shilling Demons in the Shadows.

There is hardly a dull moment in dear Mother Lanka. The country has a plethora of unsolved problems; yet. it has time and opportunity to witness the comedy drama that politics is, over there. This time, it is the furore over the President’s apparent decision to give nomination from the UPFA to his arch rival, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Mahinda fans and parasites went jubilant. As when a wicket falls on the opposite side how the fielding side flock around together in the mesmeric moment Mahinda’s men went overboard and even made announcements that President Maitripala Sirisena would be on the stage with Mahinda at the planned Anuradhapura bring-back rally. Veteran Mahinda-supporting journalists like H. L. D. Mahindapala jumped the gun, like a novice in the game, to declare that Ranil and the hundred Days program is finished. Mahindapala’s emotional amygdala hijacked his reason.

The euphoria soon fizzled out when it appeared the story had been too good to be true. On the other hand, the more articulate of the sixty-two lakhs that voted under severe pressure for Maitri on January 8th couldn’t believe their ears. Trade Unions and civil society organisations took to the streets. Despondency crept their ranks and the desperateness they had got reflected in the abuse of Maitri on social media. One Facebook joke was that Maitri had had surgery removal of his spine! The man who originated that canard was probably ignorant that if the spine of a person is removed that individual is as good as dead.

MaithripalaMaitri was not quite dead. On the evening following the night of this “decision” he addressed a crowd at Matara and vociferously announced that he would never let the soft revolution of 8th January get diluted and that he will never permit family rule again. Maitri has since sharpened his controversial position. He now states he is giving only “conditional nomination,” to Rajapaksa and also that he would not give nomination to many of the latter’s former Parliamentary cronies. This meant the isolation of Mahinda Rajapaksa. Maitri is also of the view that Rajapaksa will not get SLFP nomination; which means the High King will have to get on stage as a nominee of one of the one-man parties like the MEP or Vasu or Gammanpilla. The JHU has already left the UPFA and renamed itself sans racial connotations. The rumour machine says CBK will lead the SLFP campaign. If this does occur Mahinda Rajapaksa will be totally isolated and compelled to wear the shell of the UPFA. The rumour mill also states that Mahinda will contest on the symbol of a budding flower.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s budding days are clearly over. Maitri’s decision is also that he will have to confine himself to Hambantota and not lead the UPFA campaign; nor is he to be made a Prime Minister in the event of the UPFA winning. It is doubtful if the latter stipulations can be put to practice. How is he to prevent Mahinda Rajapaksa from wresting control of the campaign? In the event of Mahinda winning along with the UPFA he will ruthlessly seek to pressurise Maitri by expanding on his number of MPs via purchase from the opposite side. We know Mahinda too well to discard such a possibility. We also know he is a revengeful enemy and that he can be cruel (e.d Sarath Fonseka). His speech at Medamulana recently showed what hate language was. One could notice his body language and the vairaya (hate) If by any chance he is able to win along with a majority of MPs you can be sure the counter revolution will be complete and that many of the revolutionaries will be jailed or missing. This would be the opposite of what happened during the French Revolution of 1789. Mahinda will re-define the revolutionaries as conspiring agents of Western powers that are out, for some unstated reason, to ruin Sri Lanka. That is the personality of Mahinda Rajapaksa. If one needs to have an example of the opposite of a Nelson Mandela one could look at Mahinda Rajapaksa. Under such circumstances, Maitri, if he is not assassinated, will have no option but to accept Mahinda as PM. There is also the question of the legality of Maitri’s threat not to give nominations to those charged with fraud. A charge is a charge and the accused are presumed to be innocent until those charges are proved. To counter this position there is the captain’s legitimacy in picking who would lead the team. That is a subjective decision. One is in a conundrum here.

What surprises me in all these moves and counter moves is the silence of the UNP and its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. Ranil hasn’t spoken a single response -word. We also know that Ranil and Maitri are in the best of terms. Given these premises are we to infer that his entire episode is a sham? Has Mahinda Rajapaksa been already trapped as he was at the Presidential Elections when the Common Candidate was announced?

We will know in the next few days. Until then best of luck, Sri Lanka!

The Question Mark, questions are given below. Send this Comment Written in in a open letter written in Sinhala, Tamil and English and get each and every one of the 6,200,000 voters plus more to sign.

Mr. Maitripala Sirisena, “President” of Sri Lanka.

RE: MR Will Contest And Will Sign Nomination On July 10:

Nimal Siripala “Despite conditions laid out by President Maithripala Sirisena, Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said today that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would contest from Kurunegala and he would sign the nomination papers on July 10.”

Mr. Maitripala Sirisena, Shame on You, Shame on You!

Instead of becoming a Leader and a Statesman, see what you have done!

This shows that you are a

    1. Spineless

    2. Wimp

    3. Coward

    4. Liar

    5. Traitor to 6,200,000 Sri Lankan voters.

Shame on You Srisena, Shame on You.

Instead of calling Mahinda Rajapaksa and his cronies, who are Liars, Crooks, Robbers, Thieves and Criminals you join them especially their head MaRa. What a shame! Shame on you!

Mr. Maitripala Sirisena, you should have called them “Nuts”, yes Nuts.

    *****************************

    To Mahinda Rajapaksa and Cronies.

    NUTS!

The President of The Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka.

    *****************************

You should have learned from the American Soldier, Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe, who said “Nuts” to the Germans when he was surrounded in the Black Forest -Battle of the Bulge, during World War 2.

    Anthony McAuliffe

According to various accounts from those present, when McAuliffe was given the German message, he read it, crumpled it into a ball, threw it in a wastepaper basket, and muttered, “Aw, nuts”. The officers in McAuliffe’s command post were trying and failing to come up with suitable language for an official reply when Lt. Col. Harry Kinnard suggested that McAuliffe’s first response summed up the situation pretty well, and the others agreed. The official reply was typed and delivered by Colonel Joseph Harper, commanding the 327th Glider Infantry, to the German delegation. It was as follows:

    To the German Commander.

    NUTS!

    The American Commander

Anthony Clement “Nuts” McAuliffe (July 2, 1898 – August 11, 1975) was a United States Army brigadier general who earned fame as the acting division commander of the 101st Airborne Division troops defending Bastogne, Belgium, during World War II’s Battle of the Bulge.

After the Battle of the Bulge, McAuliffe was promoted to lieutenant general and given command of his own division, the 103rd Infantry, which he led from January 1945 to July 1945. On 3 May 1945, the 103rd captured Innsbruck in the Austrian alps, continued on to take the Brenner Pass, then earn the honor of joining the Italian and Western European fronts, linking up with the U.S. Fifth Army which had been fighting its way north up the Italian peninsula at Vipiteno, Italy.[2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_McAuliffe

      Dear Amarasiri,
I understand your agony, sadness and despair …. Have you seen some people not only crying but hitting hard on their chests … stop beating your chest so hard, Amere … Learn from Shyamon J, the pundit who knows everything …

He says “….What surprises me in all these moves and counter moves is the silence of the UNP and its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. Ranil hasn’t spoken a single response -word. We also know that Ranil and Maitri are in the best of terms. Given these premises are we to infer that his entire episode is a sham? MY3, your great leader before, could even rise again … He has no moral principles or policies or any other thing which is valuable … So wait and prey … Your desires and hopes might be coming in next minute … That is the beauty of MY3, the joker …

Ranil is a matured civilised politician and therefore must be watching Carefully the changing scenario.
MR & Co can say various falsehoods to mislead the people But they will be shortlived. When the campaign starts there is going to be various contradictions and confusions in the UPFA/SLFP camp whilst the UNP is poised to carry out very successfully.

Shame on you Maithri-this is the greatest betrayal ever!I am totally disgusted & ashamed that I voted for you. Now I wish you had lost so that you would by now be 6 feet below the ground.

&since you have agreed to nominate Alibaba why are u trying to side line any of his forty or more thieves? Is there a greater scoundrel in this country than MR?Did u or did u not shout about him at the top of yr voice from every stage ? Isn’t that why the ppl voted for you?

Pls nominate all of them & when u stand with them you will be ” horuth ekka heluwen “

When 63 lakhs voted for you guess they never expected that you are such an unprincipled wimp who would betray them in just 6 months !

I agree 100% that MR should not be given even a simple nomination to contest through SLFP. MS should tell him to go – jump in the nearest lake. Or better still – in Hambantota harbor.

A snake is a snake. Stuck in the belly the ‘Polanga’ was writhing at first and then seemed to be recovering, as they normally do. Now you should go for its poisonous head and not shove it down your sarong (Redda Asse daganne nethuwa).

MS is not naïve and sees all this all too well. But he is a patient man. He is probably waiting for the right moment to do it with the greatest impact.

This “Drama” of nomination to Mr. Mahinda and the “surprises” created on “minute by minute” basis by Mr. Maithripala, reminds me of the “Perahera” (procession) conducted by the village temple annually. In this “procession” (perahera) there are two people dressed, one as a “Tiger” and the other as a “Lion”. Their bodies are also painted to give effect to the appearance of the two animals. These two walk right at the end and that is the end “drama” which also gives the signal that it is the end of the “perhera”. What they do while walking? They are not simply walking. They are engaged in a FIGHT, jumping at each other to kill one another. That style of “Jumping at each other” provides all the entertainment to the spectators who line up the road. The starting point of the “perahera” is the temple and the ending point is also the temple. The “perahera” goes a circular roadway. Throughout the period it takes to completes its “march” of the devotees; these two; “Tiger” and the “Lion” continuously jump at each other; but interestingly no one makes a genuine attempt to “Kill” any one of them till the “perahera” ends at the temple – the beginning place. After the “perhera” ends these two — the “Tiger” and “Lion” discard their respective deceptive “ATTIRES” and “WASH OFF” the deceptive paints on their bodies and HUG each other and retire to have a good drink of “Kasippu” behind the temple shrubs.

The above “DRAMA” staged in our “TEMPLE PERAHERA” is called: “MAGODI SELLAMA”. Don’t you see the “MAGODI SELLAMA” now staged by our President Mr Sirisena and the ex President Mr. Mahinda. This is good entertainment for we “Spectators” and continue to enjoy the “MAGODI SELLAMA”; but please don’t enjoy that “Drink”, but these two “present” and “ex” are allowed; after all both of them would get so TIRED and EXHAUSTED.

How nice to be able to peep into my village life and draw a PARALLEL from the present day political “DRAMA” staged by these politicians.

Srilankan politics is not a straight game especially when you have the most cunning, ruthless, manipulative and arrogant leader in modern history around the corner trying to resurface from the beaten but not dead. This time we must make sure that he is polically destroyed or else Sri Lanka has we know it for the past 100 days will be gone. Thuggery, brutality, and corruption will be the order of the day. The little bit of sunshine called freedom and fearlessness will be finished. White vans, thugs roaming the roads without impunity will return. His cohorts are waiting quietly, waiting to resurface like the chairman from the Tangalle Pradasai saba who is currently in Prison for rape and murder. Don’t be fooled be wise and watch out.

I am really tired of the surreptitious vilification of the New Minority -the 38 lakhs. Too bad there are no white vans to make them disappear, this is democracy; destroy the other side. I guess name calling will have to do.

Wild accusations of corruption are one thing, but wild conjectures as to what will happen are really fear-mongering to win votes, and really sink to a low level.

Mahinda is welcome to prove his patriotism by contesting as an Independent Candidate,
without begging Politicians but his SB Voters, who he claimed visited him because of
    they loved him !!!

Here is just ONE condition – He must provide an open DECLARATION OF ASSETS FORM, instead
of blank papers in a sealed enveloped to the EC with the threat he shall never open it !!
I wonder where this sealed envelope is at held? – not with the FCID I wonder.

I like the expression, “Mahinda’s parasites’ They include Gammanpilla, Dinesh,Vasu, and that burly fellow with a female voice, Prasanna. These guys are trying to get on MR’s shoulders as the only way to survive. They have no love for the arrogant dictator.

Its not hard to set the nomination in an order. Each party can set their internal candidate screening criteria tight. In order to do that in Sri Lanka each political party needs appointed CEOs sort of to manage the party business and should market its management structure and decision making process as well as decisions.

At present only being a sub-contractor of government offices once elected to parliaments specially to ruling gang. Neither ruling party nor the oppositions has any competency to maintain relevant, timely legislation.

I was reading once the UNPs officeal party objective was stated in the website as “managing the government institutions upon elected”.

Will the UNP show the Party Objectives? Will the election commission have any visibility and screening process to evaluate the party’s past progress and then asking for public to comment on that to maintain the contesting status?

Does MS really think MR is going to honour his conditions? MR who has lied to the UN and the people cannot be trusted.MS is naive. MR and his cronies will pressurize MS if they win to make MR PM. He will yield to their pressure as he has done today! They will then impeach him!! That is the reality!! MS is a wimp who has put party before nation and expediency before principle. He has betrayed all those who voted for him.
