Sri Lankan Origin Australians (Academics And Professionals) Support Maithripala Sirisena

By Laksiri Fernando

Dr. Laksiri Fernando

Dr. Laksiri Fernando

It was a rare occasion of transcending the ethnic divide and coming together, at least in a small way, to express their concerns about the possible vote rigging on the Election Day and in the counting, among other matters. They have called upon the government and particularly the President as the Head of the Commonwealth to ensure a free and fair election having realized that so far the election campaigning has been marred by violence against the opposition supporters, breaking of election laws, misusing of state funds and personnel for the election campaign of the President.

The group of people who have come together is small and from the beginning the target was to collect around 20 signatures/endorsements from a cross section of Sri Lankan origin academics and professionals in Australia. They mainly come from Sydney and Melbourne. The signatories consist of 13 Sinhalese, 6 Tamils and 3 women. Some are well known who have been active in political and social life before their migration to Australia and still continue their involvement in Sri Lanka in various ways.

I should be very frank about this missive. The purpose is to give publicity to their statement below which is self-explanatory of which I am also a signatory. Names are at the end of the statement.

Ensure Free and Fair Election; Towards Abolishing the Executive Presidential System

MaithriWe being Australians of Sri Lankan origin, concerned about democracy, good governance and reconciliation in Sri Lanka, call upon all Sri Lankans to vote at the forthcoming presidential elections to enable urgently needed political, constitutional and administrative reforms, especially abolishing the executive presidency.

Based on historic experiences of many countries, we cannot imagine that all the changes that people desire will be achieved within a short span of time, or simply through change of governments. However, on the other hand, we strongly believe that this presidential election offers a window of opportunity to re-establish democracy, the rule of law, good governance and to begin addressing issues of social justice.

More than five years after the end of the devastating civil war that caused unspeakable levels destruction to the country, it is time to look forward and initiate reforms vitally needed to take the country into the future. This involves political, constitutional and administrative reforms at the centre and true devolution of power to the provinces, to meet the aspirations of the minorities and grievances of the poor and the marginalized in the remote areas and provinces.

We believe that it is not a coincidence that the dark period in the history of the country which started in the early eighties happened within five years of the introduction of the 1978 constitution, which established the executive presidency with enormous powers concentrated in one individual with immunity and without accountability.

Eventually, a pervasive culture of impunity and nepotism now prevails in the country accompanied by a ubiquitous presence of corruption.  Even five years after the end of the war, the country is unable to reap the full benefits of the peace dividend, nor are all people able to enjoy the benefits of economic growth. Many of the legitimate demands of the ethnic and religious minorities remain unaddressed.

  • We believe that the path to reform has to start with the restoration of the integrity and independence of institutions, and this in order should begin with the abolishing of the executive presidency. This is the urgent need of the hour.
  • Further, we believe that whatever your view you hold of the current president, the same individual should not be allowed to hold such an office for more than two terms. Thus we lend our support to the common opposition candidate, and request all citizens of Sri Lanka to do likewise. We also demand that the opposition candidate keeps the promise of abolishing the executive presidency and reintroducing the 17th amendment within 100 days of being elected.
  • We strongly call upon the government and the President, particularly as the Chair of the Commonwealth, to ensure a free and fair election without intimidation, violence or any electoral manipulation.

Well articulated. We in UK are with you. It is not about personalities this time, it is about abolishing the executive presidency and empowering the 17th amendment to be specific.

Wow! This is going to change the presidential election result! Not.

Let us look at the list:

      Mr Sarath Jayasuriya – brother of Upul jayasuriya, does not want to reveal connections of course;

      (Dr?) Lionel Bopage,and Dr Willie Senanayake – Long term associates of the extreme Tamil diaspora organiser Ravichandran;

Dr Laksiri Fernando – CT readers need no introduction!

Luther Uthayakumaran – Dubious electronics contracter with Vodaphone

Rev. Jeffrey Abayasekera – Zionist Pentecostal preacher

Asela De Mel – Coca Cola Sri Lanka

Others are largely unemployed or underemployed basket cases perhaps looking for post-election rewards.

A letter signed by such an ordinary group of 13 out of many thousands of Sri lankan academics and professionals in Australia is not going to make any difference to the people’s victory on the 8th.

A third term for the nation’s saviour!

        Pena Kiyanna,

The only thing so called “Nation’s Saviour” has saved is his own behind.

On 8th of January he will loose that too.

        Cheers!

PS: Have you shipped your Lamboghini out of SL yet? If not, do so. It is your last opportunity. On 9th of January it will be seized by Sri Lanka Customs Dept.

Well done 20 brave Siri Lankan-Australian… This is very rare, this is NOT the typical Siri Lankan mentality or way of acting. What is typical behaviour of Siri Lankans is coming in big numbers to support the current power but get into their shells when they see obvious evil acts of existing power..
In a report I saw said that over 3 million Indians openly protested against corruption, lawlessness in issues like rapes in the last year in India and got favourable outcomes.. How many Lankans showed their faces or names against barbaric Gnanasara and other Buddhist thugs’ acts like burning civilian houses and burning businesses, churches.. almost zero.. None of hundreds of Sinhalese Buddhists monks living in Australia have said single word against those attacks on Christian and Muslim temples in SL while enjoying peace in this foreign country with Christian culture
Here 20 people come forward and openly expressed their ideas against the current power is commendable and this is the democracy…

Now this typical Stupid SB “astrologist” come forward and criticise these brave Lankan individuals personalities but nothing about content or opinions they expressed…

Stupid SB “astrologist”.. Go to your special tree in your S-Buddhist temple, tie some money and put some milk/water and curse these 20 brave Siri Lankans…. This is your typical way of doing things…

      Good, However…

There is no difference . Both Australians and Martians dob’t vote, unless they have dual citizenship an and are in Sri :Lanka, the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

If the Australians wrote the Common sense Phamplet in English, Got it translated to Sinhala and Tamil and distributed to the populace, it would have made a difference.

      Common Sense (pamphlet)

However, the Sri Lankan origin Australians and others who are at other places in thgis plabet in the planet mars, canuse the social media such as Facebook, Twitter, U-Tube and others to spread the word why Medamulana Mahinda Rajapaksa (MaRa) should not ne returned to power to continue the Family Hegemony..

Can you do it…. Just Do It.

PS. Getting the Sri Lankan writers to write the Common sense Pamphlet Sri Lanka 2014 or 2015 was like herding Cattle (Harak). They kept making strange noises , Baeee, Baeee and Baeee, which onlt the Cattle(Harak) could comprehend.

If UNP, JVP, JHU, TNA, SLMC, and a lot of others with diverse backgrounds can unite to form a common opposition doesn’t it tell us that we have moved on from being divided and are looking for a peaceful future together?

Similarly if most Sri Lankans who are abroad feel the need to unite and join the common opposition doesn’t it further buttress the the same?

And who is trying to divide us be spreading rumours about separatism?

Is it not our government? Is this ethical?

Should we continue to tolerate this divide and rule nonsense that has been plaguing our country for so long?

How could a president be so selfish and insensitive to the effects of this propaganda?

MR can and will do anything to stay in power.

We have to get rid of him for the sake of a united and forward thinking sri lanka.

We have to learn from our mistakes, undo the wrongs, stand together as humans and move forward as a nation.

Realising this is a huge step in the right direction, What do you think?

    • 7
      5

But that is exactly the problem isn’t it? UNP, JVP, JHU, TNA, SLMC, and a lot of others with diverse backgrounds have united to form a common opposition only to get rid of the incumbent. After that is achieved it will be business as usual i.e back stabbing, lying, mega deals, corruption and so on.

Dr. Laksiri Fernando I personally thank you very much for your well articulated presentation.

Everyone those who are in Academic and Professional realm must honestly understand the danger and vulnerability of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s atrocious and cruel regime and deceptive prospect.

Dynasty, Dictatorship, Thuggery, Prodigality, Lavishness, Squandering of Public Fund, Intimidations and Ruthless way of Governance and numerous unacceptable facts which are not suitable for Head of State who were elected by people are utterly overflowing and abundant in Mahinda Rajapaksa’s life.

Though he loudly enunciates about good governance and democracy in his political platforms, already we have understood the reality.

Wonder Of Asia and Astonishment of Mahinda Rajapaksa regime along with family nourishment and sustenance are explicitly visible and precisely apparent.

Just only blind people can not see and deaf people can not hear but deaf people can see and blind people can hear. Very rarely we find people both are impaired and deteriorated.

Please be wise and take very worthy decision by thinking of our young generation and future generation.

Caste Your Vote For Mr. Maithreepala Sirisena.

      Dear Saman,

How do you prove those Dynasty, Dictatorship, Thuggery, Prodigality, Lavishness, Squandering of Public Fund happening in MR s regime. Probably you haven’t lived sri lanka during CBK, RW and R Prama regime. I think you are a genuine person to write very good comments about those regimes also, then you will find out who is good and validation of your comment. I live in sri Lanka for 61 years now and I know exactly what happened their. Don’t be fool and bias MR is the most patriotic and clean ruler elected by Sri Lanka after so call independency. All the allegation made for him by Champika Ranawaka and Rathana are utterly rubbish. Both of them are start their politics as active members of JVP during their university life. Probably You don’t know that. We like MR and Vote Mahinda Rajapaksha

Your head line is quite misleading. This bunch of people doesn’t represent the whole community of Sri Lankan Origin Australians. In fact I don’t know or heard of any of them before though I too live in Australia. If you want to give this heading please include some prominent Sri Lankans living in Australia. That is the least you can do.

As a Sri Lankan origin Australian i with fellow community of 100,00 have not given these 13 self appointed so called professionals to talk on behalf of us. I have never seen or heard any of these men/women attending Sri Lanka community events of significance – they seem like a bunch of stand up comedians.

I with majority of the community support the rajapaksha government who worked with the abott government to stops the bogus influx of refugees to Australia, restoring the dignity of the mother land. Long live Sri Lanka with post war prosperity.

Sri Lankan community in Australia does not live or believe what Google say. Google will only confirm these are a group met at a random BBQ with no community profile. Just because one can write articles and get them published or get a doctorate doesn’t mean they have any social acceptance.

Less than two dozens of professionals out of may be ten thousand of them. These under employed mob should ask for better deals for themselves. Go and have a free Indian meal. People in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) will decide for themselves and it will be Mahinda. Mahinda won because India asked Tamils to boycott in 2005. Then India funded Sarath Fonseka because Mahinda did not become an Indian puppet. Now India got Sirisena through Chandrika and will fail again.

“These under employed mob ” Ha Ha Ha…
Nalini may not know, these “Under Employed Mob” do not steal or misuse public money and they have positive contribution to the development of civilized world… Certainly not negative contribution to the world…
Your “Well Employed” bunch in SL, can they design, manage road development work happening in SL? Can they build straight Railway lines? Until resent past, British, Swedish people design/manage/built roads in SL, now Indians and Chinese are doing it. Can your well employed bunch run Coal Power plant efficiently, too complicated?? somehow they manage hydropower plants, but high end technological plants like Fertiliser, Nylon-6 had to be closed within 2-3 years. What happened to Russian built Petroleum, Steel, Textile, Sugar plants in 1960s ~70s ?
SL Doctors, nurses, and attendants are the most ruthless medical professionals in the world (Like most ruthless terrorists in the world…LTTE??), no respect at all to their patients who pay their salaries/income .. When these Lankan medical professional doing “underrated” work in civilized countries, they show respect to patients like other civilized professionals and respect the money they are paid… I value “underrated” work in civilized world to idle, chauffeur driven, “Sir” jobs in SL misusing public money…

I’m assuming, most of you have recently been holidaying in your beautiful motherland and sighted the development which she has gained at a very short post-war period. I now ask you to recall your memories had you been travelling before 2009, most probably you had to get off your vehicle at the check-points a quite few times, opening your baggage, etc etc. Was it a hassle free journey for you?? I very much doubt it. Okay, fine by us should you wish to go back to that brutal era or perhaps you all fancying to see her becoming another Iraq, Libiya or Egypt. The choice is your, you decide!

CHENNAI: Gearing up for a tough Presidential election in January 2015, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa described India as his relative and China as a friend. “I will not allow my soil to be used against my friends and neighbours. That will not happen in Sri Lanka as long as I’m here,” Rajapaksa said in a rare interview to a Chennai-based Tamil television channel.

I agree, the hassle of the checkpoints are true, but most of them were designed to instil fear in people’s mind and hold up the Rajapakses as our saviour. Otherwise, with all these hassle, how come, the LTTE bombers still got through. The Rajapakses are adept at saving their own skins and fattening their coffers. Let them leave our shores and live in luxury, or pray misery, in their mansions in the USA.

    Dear readers,

I think lots of people don’t know about some of these people here. I know one person here Dr Lional Bopage, He was the first secretory of JVP during the Rohana Wejayaweera era and they are responsible for thousand of innocent youth life. Those people totally destroyed and ruined our great sri Lankan culture (including political) and holecountry not only once twice. Now they are spending luxurious life out side of our great Sri Lanka and the people went behind them became ashes during Premadasa/Ranil Wickremasinghe Regim. Please let Sri Lanka to stand as developed country and we do not need to CHANG this regim and It is good for most people living in this country. If you want to make a change do it in Austrailia.

We live in Australia and know and enjoy the democratic freedoms and the high standards of honesty and decency that is maintained by politicians here and I believe this is the common experience of all Sri Lankans who are fortunate enough to live in western democracies around the globe.
There are “horses for causes”;Winston Churchill who co-ordinated and won a “World War” for the British people was kicked out by British voters at the following elections. Mahinda Rajapakse has served his cause and lived out his purpose. It is now time to build peace and establish justice for all Sri Lankans. He is manifestly failing to do this and seems to be forgoing one opportunity after another to bring about reconciliation with dignity for the minorities.
Remember how the leadership in Australia dealt with the alleged “Islamic” related threats” recently with respect towards the Islamic community and consultatively. This is the type of life and future we should and must wish for all the men, women, children and other beings in our land of birth;not one of corruption filled politicians vying with each other for the first place in deceptive, greedy immoral conduct.
President Rajapakse will always retain his rightful place in the history of our motherland but must now make way for change. For this reason alone in my view ,no matter the status or standing of the signatories in this Sri Lankan community, what they propose seems reasonable and must be supported by all who wish well for Sri Lanka.

“It was all our efforts that defeated the LTTE.”

      Not really.

“Why can’t MS and SF claim FULL Credit for winning the war? Why Give MR The Full Credit for winning the war?”

With the support of the Hindians VP won the war for MR.

“All of us defeated the LTTE, Not only the Rajapakses.”

Hindia conducted the entire war. Poor village boys paid a heavy price. From start to the end VP worked tirelessly to win the war for MR and his Sinhala/Buddhists.

MR and GR stated that without Hindia they would not have won the war.

      DR ANURA WEERERATNE

May I address you as Dr Strange Love,

Have they ever claimed to represent the entire Australians of Sri Lankan origin?

“Incidentally most of these signatories are known anti government supporters with a bias towards the LTTE.”

It is a good reason to issue joint statement of people from different background, a rare unity in diversity in opposing the corrupt, ruthless war criminals.

Why don’t you and your supporters issue statement of confident in the ruling clan?

Could you identify those who are biased towards LTTE?

Its time for you to remove your Lion flag sarong and change into white amude.

This is a well articulated appeal. It is clear in their presentation, they do not claim to represent all original Sri Lankans who are resident/citizens in Australia, although some responses falsely indicate otherwise. They make the appeal as ‘concerned INDIVIDUALS’ and they do not even claim to be eminent people as again some responses have falsely indicated. Any individual/s has a right to make an appeal as we live in a free society (unlike China, Burma, North Korea etc) as long as laws of the land are not infringed. So kudos to these individuals for having the courage, fortitude, nerve and foresight to make this appeal. I hope many such ‘individuals’ will do the same. It is refreshing to see persons from diverse backgounds coming together for a common purpose. Much the same as the Broad Opposition Alliance. Rather than slandering individuals, it will be interesting to read what concerned supporters of the marauding MR have to say why people should vote for him. Ofcourse other than now stale and hackneyed ‘won the war’ (but not the peace), ‘foreign conspiracy’ and threat from the LTTE and its diaspora. Those theme songs do not cut the mustard any longer!

The choice is clear – True and Vibrant Democracy (MS) vs unbridled Totalitarianism, Authoritarianism & Despotism with family bandyism and cronyism thrown in for good measure (MR).

Dictator MR is a veritable thief (started with Helping Hambantota Fund), an alleged murderer (e.g. Loku Athula at Temple Trees) and a serial liar (e.g.I will get rid of the EP). Furthermore, he has violated the Constitution of SL by seeking a third term. He has no respect for the rule of law (e.g. illegally got rid of CJ when her ruling re: Divi Neguma did not suit him)and routinely bribes and offers inducements to people to achieve his selfish objectives (bribed VP to prevent Tamils in the North from exercising their franchise in 2005, bribed MPs’ to cross over to achieve an illegal 2/3 majority in Parliament against the will of the people and even bribes foreigners to come and campaign for him not to mention the Professional Cricketers). It is clear this monster of a beast is not fit to govern.

Corruption and sheer waste pervades the entire society with the first family leading by example.

So voters you decide. Democracy or Dictatorship. You get what you deserve!!

EU fishing ban to hit Sri Lanka
Jan 3 (SL) Sri Lanka will have no choice but to face the fishing ban by the European Union which will take effect from Jan 15. Fisheries Minister Sarath Kumara Gunarathne said that the govt is ready to face the ban and accused former Fisheries Minister Rajith Senaratne of mishandling the matter which led to the EU to impose a ban on Sri Lankan fisheries imports. Minister said that the Fisheries Ministry has taken the necessary steps to protect the fishing industry.

*** I have a Humble reuest for all the Sinhalese intending to vote MR by hook or by crook ( From news coming out are in the majority) to campaign hard and deliver a resounding victory. This will enable us to speed up the process of ELIMINATION Of MR from outside with a telling blow which the Nation will never forget.

Australian of SL origin (AoSLo), and Others of SL origin (OoSLo) should count their lucky stars and enjoy watching the action from their peaceful adopted lands.

Of course there are many who, like dogs who to go back to check their vomit, want to return to something they left behind. So be it.

Sri Lankan politics does NOT in all seriousness rely on the favours of those who have opted for greener pastures.
