Sri Lanka’s Government controlled daily has launched a scathing attack on Britain’s Channel 4, days before a crew from the broadcaster is scheduled to arrive in Colombo to cover the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting next week.

Calling Channel 4 reporting “tacky, lurid pants-on-fire journalism that’s not fact checked, not sourced or corroborated,” the Editor of the Daily News Rajpal Abeynayake wrote in his editorial this morning that it was “journalism on the far side of the moon.”
Calling Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma “affable” – the official has been extremely concessionary towards the Rajapaksa regime – the Daily News Editorial said Channel 4’s Jon Snow was in an ignoble hurry to trip him up during a recent interview.
“The enormity of the canard boggles the mind. These people are nothing short of criminals. John Snow if he can malign a country in this way without feeling the need to substantiate what he says with an infinitesimal jot of evidence, is obviously of a criminal mindset as the charges he makes sets him up as a direct agent for seeking to maliciously prosecute key persons in the higher echelon of the Sri Lankan Establishment,” Abeynayake writes.
Abeynayake’s newspaper which has seen an unprecedented lowering of standards since he assumed the chair said Channel 4’s journalism was “a crime against humanity”.
Abeynayake’s editorials regularly and personally vilify media personnel, rights activists and opposition members – and essentially any public persons both within and outside Sri Lanka who hold dissenting views from that of the ruling Rajapaksa regime and its media bandwagon.

There is no peace in the war affected areas on Sri Lanka. Absence of fighting is not the same as the presence of peace. This was confirmed by THREE independent reports published just after the recent Northern Provincial Election. Assaulting candidates and their supporters by the military cannot be happening in peace time. Those incidents happened while the government and military spokesmen claimed the army was confined to barracks. If that is the case what is it like when the military are in the fields and forcing themselves into crowded buses without paying fares.
Rajpal Abeynayake is paid by the government to do the propaganda whereas CH4 journalists, Jon Snow and Callum Macrae are top class journalists who won many awards for their excelled professionalism. Abeynayake runs a partisan and biased newspaper and serving in such paper reveals his personality and character.
If the government or its servants including those who work in the state run media want any proof of the accusations let it agree to an impartial investigation and face the consequences.

Abeynayake has written to please his political masters. Yet, he has a few good, a few not so good and a few dumb points.
Besides, these we know it all and we know what is good for you, Western journalists should be challenged by someone. Abeynayake does that. British journalists are no Choir Boys or Girls.
I beleive massive violations of the law was committed by the military at the end of Ealam War IV. These must be investigated and criminals must be punished severely.

Have you seen any CH4 Docs on LTTE crimes for 30 years? Have they investigated fund raising by LTTE in the UK? Have they looked into their propaganda networks & lobbying in the UK? Have they talked Adele Balasingham about child soldiers? CH4 woke up once VP got cornered. All this time, while Sri Lanka was exploding, CH4 was Jon Snow was sleeping.
They want to ensure Sri Lanka’s dictatorial King goes to The Hague. Very good. But, not while a far bigger war criminal, Tony Blair is sitting pretty and globe trotting in their own backyard.

The attack by Rajpal in his editorial on Jon Snow and C4 was as a result of the interview by Jon Snow with Kamalesh Sharma and the reference to 12,000 disappearance since the end the war.
I do have a lot of respect for Jon Snow as a respected and seasoned journalist/interviewer but i have serious doubts on the figure of 12,000 disappearances. Where did he come up with that figure? Was this given by a credible source?
Equally I’m baffled Kamalesh Sharma did not question this figure or challenge Jon Snow as to the authenticity of this figure.

Sharma was struggling but he was far worse when interviewed by George Algiah (Alagaratnam)of the BBC. Think he was the word “engaging” over a dozen times in the BBC interview

Rajpal Abeynaike’s savage attack is like being attacked by a feather for the Channel 4 journalists. Rajpal is no match – intellectually or in journalistic integrity – to the journalists of the calibre of Jon Snow and Calum McRae.
Rajpal is a dog protecting his master, Rajapaksa, and that is what he is paid to do. Channel 4 is not foolish to broadcast accusations that have been thoroughly verified and if the Rajapaksa regime is cock sure they are wronged they can easily file a case in a court of law in the UK. Despite all the noise about videos and other evidence shown so far being allegedly fabricated the Rajapaksa regime had not resorted to challenging Ch 4 in the courts. I wonder why!
