State-Nation-Hero: A Clarification On Rajiva’s Observations

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

As my dear friend Rajiva Wijesinha would recall, I have, even at my most acerbically critical of the policies, ideological doctrine, structures, policy process and personalities of Govt and State, always and explicitly exempted Mahinda Rajapaksa from that critique, except for his sins of omission. As such I have never advocated the defeat/removal of Mahinda Rajapaksa and would have done so only if it represented a step forward, which would have been the case ONLY with a Sajith-Karu ticket (i.e. with Sajith or Karu as candidate, and the other as PM). At no time would I have thought positively or charitably of a post-Mahinda dispensation in which the dominant personalities were Ranil and CBK. I regard such a prospect as a dangerously reactionary retrogression.

I daresay Rajiva would have read our mutual friend Tamara Kunanayakam’s piece in the Daily Mirror, re-posted by DBS Jeyaraj under the telling caption, excerpted from the text “A Vote for Sirisena is a Vote for Ranil”. I agree with her lucid reading.

I did hope that the Maithri accord with the JHU offered the opportunity of a mid-course correction, effecting a shift from abolition to the slimming down of the Executive Presidential system, and I said this to Maithri, but that hope was belied with his Dec 10th Human Rights Day speech to the Civil Society conclave, the Maithri Manifesto and Ranil’s exegesis at the recent Business Forum.

As my good friend Rajiva knows, I have been totally against the abolition of the executive presidency, and totally for its retention in modified form (with the restoration of the 17th amendment). Even in the years of armed radical left opposition to the Jayewardene regime, for which I was indicted under the PTA and the Emergency, the executive presidency was never a target of our political or ideological attack. I am acutely aware that almost all left/progressive administrations in Latin America and elsewhere are supporters and incumbents of executive Presidential systems. I am also conscious that the executive presidency was the product or resultant of revolutions generated by progressive political thought, both liberal-bourgeois and radical and are therefore in evidence in the USA, France, Russia and China, while the parliamentary model in that of Britain with its comparatively un-revolutionary, conservative tradition.

It was clear to me by Dec 10th 2014, three days after my discussion with Maithri, that the fast-track (100 day) surrender of executive power and authority was a serious commitment and that we shall find ourselves in a situation in which the most powerful person in the country is not Maithripala, but precisely Ranil or CBK.

Given my long held and articulated views, I have two major reasons– the Exec Presidential system and the RW+CBK bloc–to support Mahinda Rajapaksa as the lesser evil. As for Gotahaya, while my policy criticisms of him remain, at least he is indubitably a patriot, unlike the pro-Western appeasers of fascist separatism, Ranil and Chandrika, who will rule the roost after Maithri abolishes the exec presidential system and abdicates power to parliament and the Cabinet on/by April 20th.

How can anyone find surprising my decision to oppose an outcome in which Ranil Wickremesinghe the official representative of the global Right, the International Democratic Union headed by the US Republicans and the British Conservatives, emerges a key decision maker, while Mahinda Rajapaksa, a staunch advocate of national sovereignty, is sent packing?

My critique of Ranil, quite unlike that of Rajiva, has remained consistent since the day in the late 1990s that Ranil linked up with the IDU and shifted the UNP’s stance on the LTTE in line with the Liam Fox agreement. Rajiva would agree that Ranil has been pretty consistently positioned (except during the Premadasa presidency and its immediate aftermath) on the ideological and programmatic rightwing of the right-of-center UNP. It is Rajiva who most memorably reminds us of Ranil’s conduct during the days of JR Jayewardene; conduct which appalled their distinguished uncle, Bishop Lakshman Wickremesinghe. Luckily for him, he passed away before Batalanda.

As for the Foreign Ministry and foreign policy, I’d rather take my chances with Mahinda and GL, — and yes, even with Gota in the mix—rather than with Mangala Samaraweera under Ranil or CBK, especially since the Maithri manifesto fails to mention ‘ non-aligned’ or ‘non-alignment’ even once, and the opposition campaign is marked by Sinophobia.

Rajiva would recall my stance during the impeachment motion against President Premadasa. It is the same compulsion– rather than any carrots and sticks– that make me get off the fence, come out in defense and support of Mahinda Rajapaksa.

I think it has always been fairly evident that I would support an electoral replacement of Mahinda only by Sajith Premadasa, while I would certainly have considered it had Maithripala Sirisena not been willing to abolish the executive presidency, leaving Ranil and Chandrika as the winners.

To conclude on a note that is at one and the same time personal, ideological and conceptual, I regard Mahinda just as I did Premadasa, as a tragic hero scorned by the Colombo elite, and my support for Premadasa and Mahinda are in perfect congruence with Rajiva’s recollection of my ideological disposition in our first substantive conversation, at Radhika’s birthday party I believe, exactly three decades ago. In my perspective and Weltanschauung, the central categories have remained the triad ‘State-Nation-Hero’; a triad with ancient roots in political and philosophical thought as well as literature, as Rajiva well knows.

I believe that the political parting of ways between Rajiva and me, just as that between me and erstwhile ideological comrades who are well-regarded commentators with a consistent track record of frontal opposition to Mahinda since 2005, is sourced in the following: their perspective is essentially that of civil society and privileges issues of governance, while mine is state-centric or statist, and privileges and operates on the axis of the dialectic of the State and the individual (tragic) hero.

Why to stand on anyone s way if any powerful group is ready to abolish the EP – which dawned all the miseries taking away respect and dignified of the life to this day – is incomprehesible.
Today, the lincumbent has completely failed the enforcement of law and order since he has no high concerns of people security. His relative to leave Singapore irrespective warrant arrest says everything about the very current law and order situation of the country. We dont know need to talk more about that.

Dayan becomes another Duminda – has lost his memory
        SUNDAY, 28 DECEMBER 2014 11:29 0 COMMENTS E-MAIL| PRINT |PDF
Dr. Dayan Jayatilleke, who had been criticizing the Rajapaksa government throughout the past as a diplomat and an intellectual, has started whitewashing the regime. This is revealed when he appeared on ‘Rupavahini’ and ITN’ on behalf of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa today (28th).

He emphasizes that Mr. Maithripala Sirisena has become a puppet manipulated by Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunga and Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleke, till very recently, stated that Sri Lanka has become the victim of human rights allegations due to politicizing of Sri Lanka’s foreign service after the war. He expressed the view that the resolutions against Sri Lanka in Geneva could not be resolved due to the bungling by the Rajapaksa government. Until a few days ago Dr. Dayan Jayatilleke criticized the Rajapaksa regime and called for a ‘change’.

However, contradicting all his views Dr. Jayatilleke has started appearing on behalf of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa. Political analysts say Dr. Dayan Jayatilleke, like Parliamentarian Duminda Silva, must be suffering from memory loss.

      Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka,

So, you are a Shill and white washer for the Medamulana Mahinda Rajapaksa (MaRa) political class, dominated by the MaRa Family, and the MaRa extended Family along with the Shills, White-washers and cronies.

“I daresay Rajiva would have read our mutual friend Tamara Kunanayakam’s piece in the Daily Mirror, re-posted by DBS Jeyaraj under the telling caption, excerpted from the text “A Vote for Sirisena is a Vote for Ranil”. I agree with her lucid reading.”

So, your current Shilling and white-washing project objective is to:

      1. Degrade Rajiva

      2. Degrade Matripala Sirisena by Saying a vote for Sirisena is a vote for Ranil.

A vote for Sirisena ia Vote for Democracy and Good governance and against the maRa family dictatorship and Cronyism.

Did you know that Medamulana MaRa kept calling Ragiva’s wife to get to change her husband to change his mind, and rejoin MaRa?. Is it the task now assigned to you?

Dayan Jayatilleka and his mutual friend Tamara Kunanayakam are used condoms, Mahinda Rajapakshe used them well and threw them into the garbage bin. Right now, Mahinda Rajapakshe is so desperate, he has dug the garbage bin and taken out the used condoms back to reuse them. Let us see how long Mahinda Rajapakshe can ride with them before they are thrown again never to be used again.

I wish they could provide a dolmetcher (interpreter) to MS in that occassion because it was important to pass to the audience.

Thanks I happened to watch the Video – I will pass this to the masses.

These perverts, thugs, and jokers SB Dissanayake, Bandula Gunewardene, Mutuhettigama, Mervin Silva, Duminda Silva, Weerawansa, Tissa Attanayake, Dayan Jayathilake, etc. are immensely contributing to Mahinda’s defeat.
I can’t wait to see what the new govt, if elected is going to do to these lowlife parasites. They should be put in jail for life.

However, the last minute game plan by Mahinda & Gota may shock all of us. In the miracle of Asia, miracles could still happen and ballot boxes could be filled in favor of Mahinda. As Mahinda’s cronies say “In good way or bad way we will be in power”. Good way is impossible so only the second option is possible. Common Opposition must be prepared to face it with people’s power.

Emotional idiots in this country – cannot visualize what is going to happen to this country if the power is transferred from MR to MS at this moment of time – MS being an easily manipulable weak character will not be in any position to deliver any good governance or establish rule of law in this country — Ranil who does not represent the majority of voters in this country will not care two hoots about poor of this country – he certainly will observe happily how his gang of hungry wolves who did not have a chance to eat a full meal for so many years eating happily and throwing crumbs towards poor and down trodden — on top of that Ranil will not care a damn whatever happen to the country as long as he remains in power – because he is not a man who has his soul and body in this country – So can anybody expect things to be better under Ranil — to make the matters worse the other character behind MS is CBK – everybody knows how she had ruin the country and virtually bankrupt it during her time at the helm — Anybody who says there will be good governance and rule of law under these guys may be insane – On the other hand MR and GR are true sons of Sri Lanka – no doubt they love this country – of course there are parasites and big mouth idiots around him – but comparatively they have done more good than bad to this country – they have provided infrastructure and frame work necessary to build the economy of this country – now it is up to enterprising entrepreneurs to use these facilities and bring more wealth to the country – one missing link in this process is low investment on education and R&D which should go parallel – the best choice of the voters should be to keep MR as EP and select a strong Parliament with strong opposition to have checks and balances on EP —

      Matilda Nangiye,
this ballige putha was found pants down in late 80ties but next time he will have to face all other brutalities in Mahinda made society after 8th of Jan. He has to be very caerful about what he has been uttering not thinking twice. Every 10 year old would raise the question today ” papa why some MPS/Ministers leave the country if as Rajapakshe says law and order is safeguarded by his regime “. There, we all are speechless not being able to deliver a constructive response to our little ones. Let all these be in this way, how do they the thugish rulers treat opposition rally holders these days are as no previous times we got to see. All these are the consequence of the MAHINDA made society to this day.

Rajiva versus Dayan – the cock fight of two intellectuals behind the proxy server!

And the audience? The incestuous community, a mixture of diaspora and local anti-rajapaksas and that includes myself (yup, I am being totally honest here)

Now Rajiva, DJ, close your computer, switch off Twitter (Rajiva!). Instead you go campaigning in one of the battlefields such as Gampaha or Anuradnapura.

Then after 8th of January we see you back and you will write beautiful articles “The Economist” style that include facts and recommendations but NO (I repeat NO) references to earlier articles written!

DJ is obviously a stronger supporter of MR. He is one person who pretends that he knows all about politics and no one else both inernally and externally. Even his recent presentations in the government TV speaks of this amply. He somehow wants to project he is a leading political analyst and most sought after.

Everyone has his/her own likes and dislikes and DJ is enitlted to his/her opinion, but all his articles all direct to one direction, I.e. supporting and projecting Sajith as a great person probably for favours recieved from his father and Ranil bashing which the readers are fed up with. Recently he was trying to show he is towing a middle path, with an expectation to find favours if Mathiree wins at the same presenting MR as a winner as well, expecting a huge overseas posting. There are enough opportunists like him in our society, who are worthless.

What a bloated ego! DJ supporting either candidate will not make an iota of difference. This puppet who was so badly treated by the Mara is trying at the last minute to show his support for Mara because he knows that Ranil will not tolerate him for even a second. Absolute disgrace and should be consigned to oblivion and the cesspit.

    Dayan,

Gota was the best defense secretary we had. Although his bro Mahinda is a kind of an accidental hero.

He had no plan to defeat LTTE. Even as Mavil-Aru operation was progressing Mahinda was dealing with the LTTE to maintain the status quo. Although the deal went sour. He was then forced to continue the operation.

It was JHU/JVP and other patriotic forces that dragged the guy kicking and screaming into battle.

If the guy appreciated the sacrifices, the struggles the country went through he would not delay reforming the system. This the crux of the matter. He does not want to reform even with the 2/3 he used to have. He delays because politically it does not have a personal benefit to him.

Ranil is a plonker too. He is no better than Rajapaske. They guy never gave bi-partisan support for the operation to destroy LTTE. That is why the guy will never win in SL on his own merits.

Ceylon’s moral compass is with the JHU/JVP. They are the little people who do big things. They keep the bastards honest. The country should support which ever side they align themselves with.

So, future Foreign Minister under MR will have Sajin VG as Deputy and Kshenuka Senevirathna as Secretary! This shameless man was attacking Sajin and kshenuka all and sundry a few weeks back.

DJ is obviously jealous with educated people like Ranil. DJ knows very well that Ranil is equally capable in intellectual terms to tackle DJ. Ranil is not a person who can speak to masses. But he is probably the best Parliamentarian we have today.

DJ will do anything to get favours from anybody and that is why he is now licking boots of MR. His massive ego and fake diplomacy cost him Paris (full term as ambassador) and now going after much bigger things. He has Permanent head Damage (Ph D) as a paper qualification and many of such types do not know what they say, write or do. Like DJ many of them cannot be understood.

There is still a slim chance of MS victory. If that happens DJ might have a repetition of what happened in 1993 when he tried to attend Lalith Athulathmudali funeral. So, beware DJ. Avoid Kanatta junction and confine yourself to the house next to Gal Palliya at Colombo 03 which you are frequenting now. Good luck shameless lackey.

It is advisable this man to go for a fitness training and get ready to face and get on with Sajin vaas and other goons – because in case MR would win by any kind of abuses – being a fm of the next cabinet, DJ has to get on rather with more idiots (there of course he is going ot be seen as a knoweldgble person).
This man to loose his credibility across the nation is what I never thought. But on the other hand, the manner DJ works these days can even cost his life since people feel that this bugger betray enitre right thinking dignified folks of the island nation.

Pray tell us ‘Doc’, what are these “sins of omission” that have exempted him from “your critique”? And how about those innumerable ‘sins of commission’ he has initiated and encouraged? Do you ever critique his plundering of state coffers? And how about that massive Tsunami theft, not to mention the impunity, nepotism and other sins of commission?

Your grudge against Ranil sounds personal. So you don’t mind MARA plundering this country & investing in white elephants that have made this nation indebted for aeons? You don’t see the massive corruption & rampant lawlessness .What is the use of freeing this country from LTTE terrorism if the result is this & bound to get worse with 8 more years of this same evil ruler. War was won under his political leadership & he should get due respect for it but it was a collective effort & don’t undervalue the part JHU played in it.MR was reluctant to go to war but JHU pushed him into it when Marvilaru was closed. Ranil has his faults but he is no thief like this man. It absolutely disgusts us to see you batting for this corrupt leader on state tv. You deserve the same medicine that the masses gave you when u tried to attend Kobbekaduwa’s funeral. You are much older now but no more wiser. You keep on saying MR’s positives far out weigh his negatives but most of us agree with the opposite. You think you know everything there is to know about politics but all I can tell you is ” get lost “

    I’ve counted 20 “I” s in the above sermon.

I’ve also learnt a new meaning for “indubitably a patriot ” from the phrase – ” …at least he is… a patriot unlike pro-Western appeasers of fascist separatism…”

Can DJ turn at least 1% of Maithiri vote in favour of Mahinda with his conditioned and hate arguments? In fact, he is doing a disservice to Mahinda by writing in a constrained manner. His pen is not releasing ink, only vomit.

After 8th January, DJ has to find a place somewhere. Where will he fit in? Will he go with the lot or find a creative path to hound the new regime?

If he stop writing after 8/1 Sri Lanka will be a better place for the politicians and the media.

I hope DJ will write about many in the Mahinda’s jamboree coalition- starting within Gota and proceeding through Mervin, Weerakotiya etc. He must promote these guys to achieve the heavenly politics in Sri Lanka.

Dayan your Doctorate is not worth a penny and let me explain to you why.

1)I have always and explicitly exempted Mahinda Rajapaksa from that critique, except for his sins of omission.

*** He was the commander in chief and what you are saing is that he was not fit to lead. Can you explain to the readers how if he was not in control of his policy makers he was fit to lead the coutry.

    2) As such I have never advocated the defeat/removal of Mahinda Rajapaksa and would have done so only if it represented a step forward, which would have been the case ONLY with a Sajith-Karu ticket (i.e. with Sajith or Karu as candidate, and the other as PM).

*** For any reasonable person removing a man like MR who cant control his own cronies would be a step forward. But not for you because you are joined in the HIP with the Hambanthotta Thug.

    3) At no time would I have thought positively or charitably of a post-Mahinda dispensation in which the dominant personalities were Ranil and CBK. I regard such a prospect as a dangerously reactionary retrogression.

*** Surely Ranil & CBK cant be worse than Gotha the Criminal and other cronies.

    4) As my good friend Rajiva knows, I have been totally against the abolition of the executive presidency.

*** As a born RACIST the above is hardly surprising.

    5) It was clear to me by Dec 10th 2014, three days after my discussion with Maithri, that the fast-track (100 day) surrender of executive power and authority was a serious commitment and that we shall find ourselves in a situation in which the most powerful person in the country is not Maithripala, but precisely Ranil or CBK.

*** The above is all sour grapes and learn to live the fact THAT win or lose MRs time is up and he is heading to the HAGUE and no force in the World stop it. Not even Maithri.

6)Given my long held and articulated views, I have two major reasons– the Exec Presidential system and the RW+CBK bloc–to support Mahinda Rajapaksa as the lesser evil.

*** Fortunately it is the Western Countries and UNHCR are the Judge and Jury and not you or the 20 million Racists.

7)How can anyone find surprising my decision to oppose an outcome in which Ranil Wickremesinghe the official representative of the global Right, the International Democratic Union headed by the US Republicans and the British Conservatives, emerges a key decision maker, while Mahinda Rajapaksa, a staunch advocate of national sovereignty, is sent packing.

*** I am a realist and have no problem conforming to International Standards but people like you who hero worship THUGS will always find it hard to give up terrorisng those who rebel.

Here is a piece of Advice for you:

You are no longer in control of your destiny but I share a common Goal with you. Just like you I want to see MR reelected with a Thumping Majority but for different reasons.

SEE YOU IN THE HAGUE with MR in the Dock with no doubt you in the Gallery waiting your turn to give evidence.

CRIME never pays. Just remember MILOSEVIC.

All must appreciate experienced DPLs DJ and Tamara K’s observations as those are honest mature well-analyzed individual opinions.

Read the one below, as appeared in the MIRROR:

Don’t you think that ,like Karu J. in the past, Tissa Attanayake made this move owing to his frustration at the way the opposition was moving:
No leadership-proper, no direction… evident revenge by Old Spent- force Politicians using SLFP connections for the purpose, like having petty minded religious leaders so-called together with many, many, incompatible groups in a “Noah’s Arc ” staying open as well as in cognito (e.g. Sobhitha +Jayantha Dhanapala who has criticized Buddhism+ ….) … N.Dissanayake (Gamini -putra) coming back forgetting why his father was nominated the richest man in “South Asia” by a respected media group… why the family had a plane ready for running away from the country (probably to Australia where his uncle WW had already run away and made arrangements)after a Referendum… why R Premadasa mentioned in parliament Ga’s name re destroying the Jaffna Library and shattering the racial unity in a big way…. etc. Tissa A, is no fool ! He is energetic and wants to start working for the COUNTRY. The wait was too long. HE MUST BE 100% CERTAIN THAT MR WILL …MR WILL… MR WILL WIN, for he would never have joined MR otherwise.
He also may have noted that all the known families and personalities in the opposition were rejected by the masses owing to massive corruption, HR violations etc and that supporting them back is futile!
Obviously, he had seen that MR first up to 2009 May , concentrated on the war which by itself was a massive project … and became the Nation’s Savior…that the country should not be given back to those inefficient politicians who could not do it and simultaneously betrayed the soldiers. Then he probably saw that since mid 2009 up to now in late 2014…5+ years, the country has been developed in an admirable , inexplicable manner and no former Govt had done it that way and could not do it. Those , COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES’ EVENT OF 2013 AND SIMILAR PARTICIPATION AND FURTHER WORK DISPLAY THAT MR HAS A BRIGHT VISION FOR THE COUNTRY.

TISSA’S MOVE INDICATES THAT MR’S WIN IS 100% CERTAIN ! HE IS NO FOOL!

He must be disappointed that the honest politicians like A. Ratnayake, M.D.Banda and U.B Wanninayake are no more!

WHEN IT CAME FROM THE HORSE’S MOUTH, WHO CAN DENY THAT A VOTE FOR MS IS A VOTE FOR RANIL WHO WANTED A CAT’S PAW TO BECOME THE SEVERAL TIMES REJECTED HEAD OF THE STATE OF SRI LANKA.

It was a surprise of sorts when I went through Dayan’s diatribes. Glossing over MR Chinthana the manifesto, the promises made and the committee formed even before election date to “revise” the constitution all apparently seem to tie up with Dayan’s mumblings. It may yet to be seen whether this was the carrot for propelling him into the FM, possibly its next head. As would Tamara be unceremoniously dumped, to which page Dayan is no stranger, his wisdom, and his alone should rattle in the corridors of power, so thinks Dayan.

If MR cares to “meditate” his problems started with Dayan actually. What he (Dayan) claims as being the saviour would return to haunt SL. The forceful push in a parallel universe gained steam after he went around town with his bountiful boast of victory, which at best was in fact an exercise of lying through the teeth. The dividends had accrued, but not to Dayan or the SL regime, but to the people of SL. It has come to haunt the regime with a vengeance that, even after pulling off all the tricks in the hat, is wreaking havoc the way the regime may have never anticipated.

When MR announced that he would set up a juduicial inquiry on the last days of the war, one has to scratch his head and wonder what was all those that he had announced or set-up earlier. After promising in his Chinthana, not once but twice, to do away with the presidency but grossly lied, he now begs for time to trim it. Just imagine, if MR is a potpourri of lies and deceits, what do you make of Dayan?

The defeat of MR will not be as satisfying as painting Dayan’s face with the brush of shame, one that has been on an accelerating propensity, as he went from hero to zero. The forces of nature will strip this man naked to the core and, perhaps, shall teach him a lesson or two in humanity. His downfall from the pedestal in a matter of days/months from his rejoicing moment is the collective punishment that will continue unabated. I have even wondered if this presidency, shaky as it is, is essentially a way of stripping Dayan of his pretenses.

Dayan who pretends to be the Only Know It All. He acts like he is neutral but a strong canvasser for MR mainky looking for a Lucrative overseas posting. GOOD LUCK to him. HOwever what he tries to preach through his articles in CT and government controlled tv, is not accepted by the general public. He is tolerated but not accepted and therefore he should now fold up and look at the circus with the elections which is far from what he would like to see and may be relax his nerves with a scotch or beer.

Not agreeing with MS is one thing, but to say one supports MR because MS is not what he wanted, after all that has been said before is unbelievable change of position. Make me believe that MR found the right price to pay. Shameful.

Prof Rajiva if you read Dayan Jayatilleka between the lines, you can guess his motive. He is indirectly using you to get a nominated MP position in the next government hoping Mahinda would win. This is why he is supporting Mahinda. The use of Bombastic words in his article and show off as a true leftist and undermining the Liberal democracy to which you advocate. He a self praising devil
