Stern Action Will Be Taken By UNHRC – TNA

By Colombo Telegraph

“We wish to make it clear that our engagement with the South African initiative is NOT a process that we have commenced with the GOSL and that appropriate action at the UNHRC is absolutely necessary to persuade the GOSL to comply with the said resolution and to discontinue with its harmful agenda against the Tamil People of Sri Lanka.” Tamil National Alliance said today.

Sampanthan

A delegation of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is presently in South Africa. This is consequent to an initiative by the Government of South Africa and the African National Congress to share their own experiences in Conflict Resolution and Truth and Reconciliation.

Issuing a statement the TNA says; “The South African initiative commenced in the year 2011 when a delegation led by their Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs visited Sri Lanka and made this offer to the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the TNA. the TNA has accepted this offer.”

“2011 was the year in which the GOSL commenced a bilateral discussion with the TNA in the month of January to resolve the 60 year old national issue in Sri Lanka. Although the TNA acted honestly and sincerely and placed on the table their comprehensive proposals for a political solution by March 2011, the GOSL defaulted in making even their response known for 5 months and 7 meetings, which forced the TNA to refuse to agree to the next date of meeting. Thereafter the President met with the leader of the TNA and the bilateral discussions recommenced on the 16th of September 2011 on the following agreements: 1. Five previous proposals to be brought to the negotiations in lieu of the GOSL’s response; and 2. Once consensus is reached between the TNA and the GOSL on certain substantive issues, the TNA would join the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC).”

However, in violation of the above agreements the GOSL walked out of the talks in January 2012. Two attempts at breaking the deadlock failed solely on account of the GOSL refusing the compromises offered. This stalemate has continued to date. And while the talks are deadlocked, the GOSL aggressively continues with its agenda of militarily subjugating the Tamil People and materially altering the demography of the North East of Sri Lanka.

“It was in this background that a resolution was adopted by the UNHRC in March 2012, which has largely not been implemented by the GOSL. In the 22nd sessions due to commence on the 25th of February 2013, this failure of the GOSL will come under focus and we hope stern action will be taken to promote justice, accountability and reconciliation.”

“In this context we are acutely aware that the GOSL will seek to show the world that some progress has been made, by pointing to the current visit by the TNA to South Africa. Therefore we wish to make it clear that our engagement with the South African initiative is NOT a process that we have commenced with the GOSL and that appropriate action at the UNHRC is absolutely necessary to persuade the GOSL to comply with the said resolution and to discontinue with its harmful agenda against the Tamil People of Sri Lanka.”

The TNA should have and should even now insist on Northern Provincial Council elections (as soon as the LTTE was defeated in 2009), in order to serve the people they claim to serve but whom they merely exploit -just as does Devananda..
TNA is only interested in international jaunts like the other political parties of Lanka..
Question is Why does this doddering geriatric not find a successor?! He is like the rest of the political leadership of Lanka – Ranil Wickramasinghe and Mahinda Rajapassa who are dictators within their party. TNA has not got a single woman politician of stature too.

      Agree with Dinuk.

TNA is a meance to Sri Lanka and to Tamils.

TNA just hopes idiotic Sri Lankan leadership will keep making massive blunders. Paving the way for the IC to intervene in Sri Lanka.

TNA is just another outfit destroying Sri Lanka from within. While enjoying all the perks Parliament of Sri Lanka offers.

Besides, TNA monkeys forgot to take any so called “stern action” against VP or his terror outfit for 30 years.

It is very depressing that the TNA seems willing to talk to practically anyone in the world except those who could, if they were approached intelligently, do the most to bring about a way forward in ethnic relations in Sri Lanka. Sadly they seem more intent in trying to gain small and inconsequential debating victories in South Africa, Geneva, London, etc than in actually engaging in discussions with the remaining 95% of Sri Lanka’s population and their representatives.

For the Sri Lankan Tamil people the TNA claim to represent, that is the Sri Lankan Tamils in the north and east of the island, this is very unfortunate. But it does, at least, show clearly that Tamil people in those regions have to find new, visionary and practical leaders to replace the present ones.

      Candidly

What do you want the TNA to do? They started the negotiation in good faith with MARA. MARA requested the TNA to submit the proposal, the TNA did so, but MARA did not even bother to acknowledge it! Why can’t you ask MARA to behave better with TNA to find a solution

“What do you want the TNA to do?”

They should participate in the Parliamentary Select Committee which the government says it will set up to make suggestions about the way forward for Sri Lanka.

There is no alternative as the TNA is in no position to impose conditions. What is the point of taking to marginal groups in South Africa, the UK,? Even the UNHRC has no powers to make any country do anything it doesn’t want to do. The TNA is just wasting valuable time.

How can you expect TNA to have faith in PSC. We all know about the latest PSC and how it functioned. Prof. Rajeeva W has stated who are culprits in bring the negotiations to a stand still. Don’t blame anyone without knowing the facts.

man, don’t talk a load of bollocks. even though i wasn’t around at that time , talks between tamil representatives and sinhala leaders started in the 50s i believe. talks from 1950 to 2012 didn’t yield any results. why?. the answer is simple. sinhala people don’t want to accomodate the reasonable demands of the tamil people. in other words sinhala people don’t want to grant political concessions to tamil people. sinhala people want to keep the power themselves and want to rule tamil people. look, sinhala government is sending monkeys to geneva to have a fight with other nations at a cost of thousands of dollars. what it means is sinhala state is prepared to go at any length to deny political concessions to tamil people. sinhala state and this adminisration is prepared to lie its way through anything.
tna cannot be blamed for staying away from talks. sinhala state is simply not prepared to talk. another prabhakaran is the answer.

Don’t bring the same old story, don’t be poisoned, if Prabaharan avoided the clash with IPKF we could have had a long peace full solution under united Sri Lanka long ago .He missed many opportunities in the past, why want another prabaharan, if another Prabaharan arise same old story will happen again, I believe you don’t have a bitter experience during last 30 years

The NP elections are being delayed only because EPDP will lose miserably,if free and fair elections are held.
The EPDP paramilitaries prey on the citizens for their existence and with the navy, keep the Kayts (islands) electorate under subjugation as it is the only one which ‘votes’ for Devananda by coercion in every election.

EPDP had one member, then 3 member of parliment, in coming election 8 EPDP member will be in Parliment

One important thing that the govt must remember when dealing with Tamils is never run away. Then they keep beating you. The good lesson was from LTTE.

As long as Tribalist Tamils are there, they will use the same game.

    Jim softy

It’s good for the Tamils the LTTE is out of the equation now. In my opinion, without the LTTE, the Tamil struggle is purified. You must have seen the TNA is already receiving red carpet reception in New Delhi, Washington, ottawa, Capetown etc. Don’t think you can play the game with the TNA as you did with the LTTE. Time to grow up and behave responsibly.

Exactly RP,that is what they really want.Red carpet treatment in all the major cities in world. They are enjoying it and do not seem it to end in a hurry. Meanwhile RP’s are waiting looking up for the sun to fall.”Without the LTTE Tamil struggle may be purified but also petrified.

Despite the gloat they hold absolute power in the country the Rajapakses shiver before the extreme Buddhist Sinhala chauvinistic cabal. This is the reason why Mahinda Rajapakse breaks every “honest
attempt to reach a settlement on the National Question” by the devious method of breaking this half-way. The trail is littered with his engineered perfidy since he commenced several rounds of talks with the Tamil leadership. All this is to hoodwink the global community, IMF/WB and donors the regime is sincere in its search for peace and reconciliation. They are not. Look at the minor issue of the singing of the National Anthem. Vasudeva N is a creation of the President to tell the world in making him Minister of National Integration, MR is serious in working towards unity. But his attack dogs Weerawansa and Ranawake are separately unleashed to wreck the very proposal of Cabinet colleague Vasu N. Vasu would not have moved far unless he had the President’s nod at the outset.

The donors and the international community are no fools. Paytime will come in stages. Feb/March in Geneve is the first instalment. Let’s not blame Sampanthan for all this. In the Lincolnian wisdom, you cannot fool all the people all the time.

Mr Sambandan is cock sure about Navai Pillai fixibg Rajapaksa soon.for eliminationg his beloved “Boys”

However he could have arranged a reprieve if Rajapaksa signed a private treaty to hand over NE to Sambandan with full Police Powers and freehold titles.

Even if Rajapksa was scared of Navai Pillai, Cameron and Harper hauling him to Hague,. how could he sign off crown land to Sambnandan, without getting the OK from the great majority of the inhabitant population?.

And the same inhabitants who are watching all the carnage in the UN liberated countries in recent times, may wonder what is going to happen to their current freedom and peace, if two thirds of the country is handed over to a Leader of a communal poltical party who acted as the proxies to the most ruthless “liberation”outfit of the 21st Century.

“However he could have arranged a reprieve if Rajapaksa signed a private treaty to hand over NE to Sambandan with full Police Powers and freehold titles” says the unsolicited regime-hack Sumanasekera.
When Sambandan and the Tamil nation ask for the restoration of their
traditional homeland in the NEP, stolen from them in different ways under the thin veneer of legality in the NEP, they do not ask for a favour in bended knees. They simply ask for the restoration of the Status Quo. This is continued to be denied because it is said the Rajapakses are mortally afraid of the priesthood and the extreme Sinhala chauvinistic wing although they know the law and natural justice are with the Tamils. It was the same fear that was expressed in respect of the Tamil Language parity and the Citizenship issue since 1956. We remember how justice was restored then. The regime must remind itself the world has changed far more towards reason than 1987. The philosophy of might is right was buried long ago. It is now a more caring world. As Martin Luther King reminded the world “an injustice anywhere is to be considered an injustice everywhere” An ostrich-like stance is not going to solve matters. Statesmanship, courage and political will is what is needed to help us unite and move forward to
peace and proserpity in the future, which is really our collective Urumaya.

    Senguttuvan:

Whole island is the homeland of everyone equally sinhala, tamil, muslim, malay, catholic. So NEP is not the ‘exclusive homeland’ of anyone rather it is everyone’s the same as the rest of the country. Otherwise who is to say which part of the island is whose? Who decides this you? Then I also have the same right as you to decide what is my homeland and I say it is the whole island and over 88% of people will agree with me. So stop talking nonsense.

If you don’t like this then go live in any western country of your choosing and demand a separate state there. Canada has a lot of space, make your demands there.

We already have a political solution brought in 1987 in terms of the provincial council system and it is functioning well. The provincial councils as they are functioning at present is the political solution, nothing more.

The govt is not going to give less than 12% of the population over 28% of the land and over 66% of its coastline. The coastal areas and the EEZ is critical to the existence and integrity of any island nation. So for less than 12% of the population to demand over 28% of the land and over 66% of the coastal resources is absurd, unjust, unacceptable and unfair at the expense of the other 88%. One citizen one vote that is how it functions. Nobody is entitled to more than anyone else whether it is rights, land, coastal resources or anything else. Each person is entitled to an equal share.

I agree with you on most of it, But what tamils need more Autonomy, more tamils is police services as well as military ,diplomats ect ect.If SL Army has its personals as per population percentage, Tamils will call SLA as our army instead of Sinhala army. will it happen in SL as you said “Each person is entitled to an equal share”?

Tamials forget all these reconciliation and war crimes if they get the Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka.

Why does Sambandan seek solace in Saud Afrika, when the Diaspora buddies Cameron and Harper are both waving the noose, one in Geneva and the other at CHOGM?.

Former citizens of Bantustans are not that well off under the ANC either, although they are supposed to be liberators who bring home the bacon.

Only jobs for these poor Black people are with the Cameron Harper supporting Gold Diggers from Canada and Britain.

By all accounts these jobs are no picnic and not conducive to Human Rights.

40 of them were shot by the ANC police for asking better working conditions.

How does that compare with out ex LTTE citizens in the North, where Mr Sambandan has taken a caveat?.

Economic Growth was 22 %,last year.

Even British Burt reckons it is pretty good going in any ones language.

So do these ex LTTErs want Sambandan to get help from the ANC to look after them?.

NP is the 3rd prosperous now, from bottom last in 2009.

Wonder whether Colombo Elite and Jaffna Elite who are of course Colombo citizens anyway, support this Sambandan venture.

Or is it just a bit of curry favoring before Geneva with his new partner Navai who I am told is also a SA citizen.

    Here’s what Monkey says :-

“We already have a political solution brought in 1987 in terms of the provincial council system and it is functioning well. The provincial councils as they are functioning at present is the political solution, nothing more..”

You have to be a Chimpanzee or Orangutan not to know Jaffna, the place and people, who needed devolution most – do not have a PC. The 1987 formulae had to come, shamefully, due to the arrival of a foreign army
is yet another factor you might not know. Even with what your Monkey brains allow you, consider – swinging from tree to tree – why the Rajapakses are afraid to allow the PC to the Tamils of Jaffna for the past 4 years. Vaanaram aiya, it is finally coming not because of the goodness of the Rajapakses but because of the threat to the regime from the international community and Tamilnadu.

TNA leaders are a fortunate lot among all the Sri Lankan MPs. They are being invited to Canada, Germany, Switzerland, USA, UK, France, New Delhi and now even to South Africa on free trips.Paying their own money they very often go to Tamil Nadu to visit their families living there in safety. Soon Sampanthan & Co will fly to Geneva to canvass against MR government at UNHRC thanks again to funding by the Tamil diaspora and NGOs. These happy-go-lucky guys are enjoying world trips that no other MPs from the opposition enjoy. I don’t think that even some government Ministers enjoy these many of foreign free trips.

All these trips by TNA leaders will not compel MR to live up to his promise he made to India and to the West soon after the defeat of LTTE that he would settle the Tamil problem. If MR wants to solve the Tamil problem he needs no Parliamentary Select Committee. He enjoys more than a two-third majority in Parliament and even if a settlement proposal has to be put to a referendum he can easily win the required simple majority. He need not touch the TNA proposals which Sambandan says were prsented by March 2011. There are other settlement packages such as the Tissa Vitharane Proposals previously drawn up after lengthy deliberations. There is Chandrika Kumratunga’s devolution package. He need not even serch for new proposals. He can satisfy the Tamils by implementing in full the 13th amendment and merging the Northern and Eastern provinces by necessary constitutional amendment.

MR has wasted four valuable years. Had he acted soon after May 2009 there would not have been the revival of the LTTE by the Tamil diaspora elements. Sri Lanka would not have been dragged to UNHRC and faced uncomfortable scrutiny by other nations. Even now it is not too date. There are many Tamils who are still prepared to back him if he comes forwarded now to end this problem once and for all. Will he rise up against the Sinhala nationalist elements and act like a statesman?

    Useful comments by reader Naga.

MR’s dilemma is even if he wants to yield to reason and give the Tamils their long due, his regime will be wiped out by the militant clergy, who privately threaten to use their countrywide “network”
(their description) of monks to overthrow the regime, if the ruling clique goes against them. MR is all too
aware he has a 2/3rd majority, the Tissa Vitharna Report and so on but his immediate concern is to prepare the wicket for his sons and the other Rajapakse clan to rule the country for the next few generations. Neither the Tamil or Sinhala interest is in his immediate agenda, as I read.

I wonder Why you denigrate the foreign travels of the TNA. I believe the solicited visit to S. Africa will bring better understanding to
the Tamil Nation from a country that suffered a similar fate. As someone given to overseas travel for many decades on business/personal matters, I now detest travel and to be on long plane rides. These, with all sorts of deranged men planning to blow up the world travelling in planes, is no longer fun or that is looked forward to.
Poor Sambanthan must be feeling similarly as well. While politically disagreeing with the TNA is in the democratic norm let us strengthen the more established and recognised entity within the Tamil formation than resort to that wretched devise “if you cannot go up, bring the man upward bound also down”

    Mr. Sambanthan,

Politics is the art of the possible. I am sure you know by now what is possible, not possible and even impossible. Please initiate and try to do what is the possible in your twilight years. For me the possible, now, is to work towards mobilising the resources – financial and human – to put the war-affected Tamils on a path to success . This may serve as an example to the rest of our country, of how community iniatives can make a difference.

Education is one area that needs urgent attention. Work towards establishing international schools- permitted by law- in the north and east and the rest of the island to provide Tamil children quality education. Has anything been done on the education front for the Tamils since Sir.P. Ramanathan and Hindu Board Rajaratnam?

Work towards improving the standards in the universities in the north and east . These universities need better quality staff, endowments and modernistic curricula. They have to be the centres that revitalise our society and take us into the 21st century. The universities in the north and east, as well as in the rest of Sri Lanka, are largely abodes for frogs in the well, by way of both the faculty and the students. Mediocrity breeds mediocrity. We need excellence in our universities.

Work towards reviving and revitalising the cooperative movement in the north and east to revive agriculture and animal husbandry and make them commercially viable and value addition oriented.

Identify areas of development in the north and east, and attract investors to bing in know how and capital.

Establish a think tank too identify the social and economic problems confronting the Tamils in the war affected areas and explore solutions.

Finally, spend time and effort to forge a close relationship with the Sinhala and Muslim people and their enlightened and progressive leaders.

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

Tamils won’t be ruling Sri Lanka as long as they call them sees Tamil and talk of Tamils – because the reality is majority will eject a majority leader. It’s the reality . People are comfortable with their own race. I don’t think we will even see a non Buddhist leader for decades to come. That’s Reality. Ranil even changed his relying to be a Buddhist. That’s life and that’s the realty.wheter we like it it not .

Tamils need to integrate with the majority and Build their identity as Sri labkans . Do we see anything by TBA
TNA to celebrate national day? – I don’t think they even identify yhemeves as Sri Lankans. Onus is on the minority to integrate.

My view is Sinhala people do not expect Tamils to change their ways and become Sinhalese.

They only have to stop asking 2/3rd of the coast line and 35% of land mass be set aside for 1/2 of Tamil population in this country while the other half lives in Colombo and an equal number of Indian Tamils live in up country both of which are in the South.

TNA was not called Tiger nominated agents for no reason. I do not see TNA as an appropriate platform for any Tamil leader who wish to build any kind of rapport with Sinhala community. My humble apologies in advance to “Sri Lankan Tamils” for even suggesting that Tamils engage in such an endeavor.

        Navin
Please grow up. Go through the data on the ethnic composition of NE since independence. State sponsored sinhala colonisation brought about these changes. Tamils would have no problem if Sinhalese come to the NE to settle at their own will. Whether you like it or not the ancestors of the SL Tamils had given them a homeland, culture, language and its the responsibility of the every Tamil to defend their ancestral heritage by bullet or pen & paper. If Sinhalese don’t listen, this country will never prosper, at best they can have only a corrupt criminal such as MARA at the helm. The nation fast becoming a paraya state – even decent Sinhalese will find it uninhabitable.

Do you remember what JR said.if I starve Tamils the Sinhalese will be happy.this is how the rulers of Sri Lanka have been fooling both Sinhalese and Tamils for decades.this mindset must change.all must elect a statesman like what America did after the civil war or what Singapore did after independence.please don’t take UNHRC lightly. They can impose sanctions.can Sri Lanka with stand any sanctions?for the GSP withdrawal already few thousand jobs have gone already.few hundred factories have closed down.MR is pouring money on ventures like Hambantora and Mihon Lanka.will they bring any benefit to Sri Lanka.all these are done at the poor people’s expense.

As a Tamil let me assure our friends Ralph and Navin we do not seek to rule Sri Lanka. All we ask for is to run our own affairs in the NEP,
as allowed to other PCs in the country. We are prepared to live with our majority Sinhala friends in the island – with some adjustments consistent with subsequent realities. Our political culture, as it is today, is far too petty for a minority person to become President or PM. The chances of a Sinhalese Christian is no better – unlike some of our Cricketers one switches names and sides. There is one even in the Cabinet, it is said, who has benefited by such a recent switch. There is, however, absolutely no way for the Tamils to become Sinhalese.
Although, it is not mere speculation that such a project may well be underway to eclipse the Tamil presence in the island.

I believe, TNA need to declare Tamil Elam. When the Government send them to jail, they need to be in Jail. This is the only way, Tamil can get freedom.

If the TNA does that [I think the TNA will have to do this appropriate time] Mahinda mama will be in mega trouble!! I understand many countries have pledged to recognise the Tamils’ right to self determination.
