Sunday Leader Had Its Fancy Relaunch, Chairman Lal And President Mahinda Were Not There

By Colombo Telegraph

Sunday Leader had its fancy relaunch on thursday at the newly refurbished race course ball room. Notable absentees were Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Basil Rajapaksa, the Chairman Lal Wickremetunge and the chief guest Mahinda Rajapaksa .

Sajithe Premadasa sang songs to the tunes of a western band. New owner Asanga Seneviratne had got the services of a reporter from another newspaper to criticise the previous editor Frederica Jansz on the mike and followed by an intro of the new editor sakuntala Perera someone or the other. A presentation showed highlighted that “some incident happened” in 2009. They couldn’t even mention late Editor Lasantha Wickremetunge’s name. None of the staff of the Old Leader were present.

Strange that Sajith should associate with such disreputable characters?

What more do you expect of Sajith?

Lal Wickrematunge was not even invited. This is what happens when one sells his soul for a mess of pottage. Sajith is a jack in the box masquerading as a politician who will sing loud for anyone who will slip cash between his oily palms. Asanga is a mere stooge. A brainless twit who simply got lucky playing broker. Lasantha must indeed be spinning in his grave. What a sad day for a legacy now all but dead that this great journalist spilled blood for.

I lost faith in Sajith when he he criticized UNSG Ban ki Moon saying that the appointment of the Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka was an interference in the internal affairs of the country. That betrayed his ignorance of the working of the UN system or his eagerness to mount the bandwagon of the Sinhala extremists. However, Sajith has a good following in the country. He may lose a sizable section of his supporters unless he proffers a plausible reason for his serenade performance at the Sunday Leader relaunch.

Saman, I was at Shevan Daniel’s father’s funeral the other day. Who came with Mervyn Silva to the cemetary? Sajith. This is the level of intellect Sajith is comfortable with.

The name “Sunday Leader” must be changed. The synonym for Sunday Leader is “Unbowed and Unafraid” which no longer is appropriate. I propose that the name for this paper should be “Yes Minister”.

what absolute tosh. we have seen photographs of the event. mandana ismail was there and if my memory serves me right she has been at the leader for a very long time. life evolves and with a new owner the leader is going another route. so unless all the people who loved the ‘old’ leader can band together and start an alternative,we must all be quiet and once in a while bemoan the loss of a paper that took everyone to task. except people important to lasantha’s quest for supremacy of the unp, his need to enter parliament and into cabinet, those who know do know that rohan pethoyagoda was the nominee of choice on the national list or lasantha but due to the results ranil could not accomodate lasantha. there is never any connection made to ravi k, the kind of money ravi k made over the deals done with the infamous sathosa sell off, oh the leader was no better then than it is now. difference is the leader has now opined to stop hammering the rajapaksas. what about the exposes on ranil? never came when it was the old leader, only under fredrica jansz. one thing we must all be grateful lal gave his editorial team full independence. he haspaid a high price in more ways than one. i am glad he got out at the top of a huge financial morass which saw the leader being sold for halfits real worth.asanga is not just a pretty face. he will do the needful and when he cant pay the banks he will sell to the best bidder. no dont be surprised if a MP buys it. people like ranil sajith and karu must be spat on for not having banded together to buy the leader and save it from the clutches of those seeking financial and political opportunism.
