System Change, Not Mere Regime Change; Let Ranil’s Sunset Be Sunrise For Our Youth

By Vishwamithra

“Can you see the sunset real good on the West side? You can see it on the East side too.” ~S. E. Hinton

Ranil Wickremesinghe‘s New Year’s message is a hollow statement. It lacks substance. It lacks any policy pronouncements. Even its content that is presumed to be dealing with the overview of the past mistakes lacks sincere introspection as to Ranil’s own past performance, more than thrice as Prime Minister and many years as a powerful minister in the UNP-led governments. Mentioning the concept of a System Change more than once is not sufficient reason why the people should believe in him as a trustworthy leader. No reasonable person would trust him anymore.

Ranil loves to present himself as an experienced politician; more often than not, he has behaved as if he has all the solutions at his fingertips. It may have been the wishful thinking of all his supporters, if he has any, that he had the potential to resuscitate the country’s dying economy. But once again, Ranil shows us that he does not seem to understand the basics of ‘just’ governance on the one hand and the presence of mind to handle the youth of the country in a more empathetic manner on the other. No leader of a country should issue an official statement from atop the pulpit that leaves more questions than answers. A wretched lack of virility of the current system was exposed yet again.

Ranil Wickremesinghe aside, it’s time we are focused, whether Ranil and Company pays any attention or not, on the most acute demand of the hour – an authentic and real System Change and how it should come about and how the subsequent system would look like.

Another year has dawned. After an eventful yet frustrating year has passed, the most provocative question that dominates almost every inquiring mind is that whether Sri Lanka is ready and willing to usher in a System Change, not merely a change in the current regime. Sri Lanka has gone through the nonsensicality of regime change- from the Senanayakes to the Bandaranaikes to the Jayewardenes and the Rajapaksas. But the real sociopolitical consequences the people expected have not materialized. The policy changes that were brought about by each change of successive regimes had not delivered the goods and services pledged on the election platforms. Time and time again, our voters have been taken for huge rides; the strange reality has been that the voters seemed to have not minded that their blind obedience was taken for granted.

It proves beyond any shadow of doubt that the voters as much as the political leaders are responsible for our successive failures. On the economic front, each regime has indulged in borrowing after borrowing to keep a nation fed, clothed, educated and healthy. Some of our staple food, rice, is subsidized by way of fertilizer grants or appropriations; clothes are subsidized by way of provision of school clothing to kids; our education is free from kindergarten to the university level and medical expenses are looked after via government hospitals. In other words, we are a welfare state whereby our population has been conditioned by an ‘entitlement syndrome’, making it impossible for any government to balance its yearly budget, leave alone making a domestic surplus. Ensuing sociocultural effects of this mind-destructing syndrome are incalculable.

That is precisely why a system change is, if not impossible, extremely difficult. The entitlement syndrome that has taken ahold of the collective Sri Lankan mindset has become a hidden controller of elections. Whoever satisfies the most, whoever is promising to keep the entitlement syndrome rolling at whatever the national cost, is bound to receive most votes. It has compelled all governments to bend over backwards to keep an ever-hungry electorate crave for more and more. This continuous dependency on government roll-outs has not only created many an economic burden on the national coffers, it has also produced a tremendous socioeconomic and culturally-starved citizenry whose cravings are sometimes second only to the avarice of the corrupt and dishonest politicians.

On the other hand, the sociocultural and economic gap so created by the harmful and disastrous economic policies totally based on ideological and doctrinaire theories is ceaselessly widening. This gulf between those who have and those who have not has in turn resulted in cultural and socioeconomic tensions between the two primary social classes, haves and have-nots, making it rather easy and pliable for the politician to exploit to the hilt. All politicians, though viewed through the sociopolitical prism might be treated as a different set of citizenry as against the general public, too are very normal and everyday members of the public. The only difference is that those who class themselves as politicians take it for granted that political power is the end all and be all. When such elements seek office through elections and assume power, thanks mainly to affiliations to the ‘connected- people’, make every conceivable attempt to make more money in order to spend even more money at the next elections. The never-ending caravan is restarted and the cycle of politicking keeps spinning at breakneck speed. Who suffers most amidst are the common man, woman and child. Regime change is mistakenly assumed as System Change.

Those who occupy the ‘Opposition’ benches in parliament make every plan to come to power at the next election, not because they want to serve the masses, but to replace those who are corrupt and dishonest with more corrupt and more dishonest frauds of their own. Absence of charismatic, honest and sincere leadership is becoming more and more apparent. The masses on the other hand, with no real alternative to be seen and listened to, will submit to this damaging and acidic process, willy nilly.

What is a System Change? Can it be brought about without violence? Can it be implemented through the existing frame of parliamentary procedures? If not, what other means is available to the youth of the country who is eagerly waiting in the wings to inherit an already damaged and wounded system?

If the present Constitution is not capable of delivering a change that is real and totally outside the current one which is becoming more and more incapable of producing genuinely fervent leaders who would sacrifice their personal goals and ambition for the greater good of the youth and yet unborn generations, then that Constitution needs to be replaced. A ruthless approach with justifiable goals and reasonably practical vision needs to be adopted. If there are no leaders who can fit the bill, then we must find such men and women who are not yet in the field. With each day spent without any effort being made to understand and assimilate the necessity for such an authentic change is time which is not spent wisely but crudely wasted!

Can the new System Change include an ongoing, continuous or perpetual audit of assets of all politicians – President, Prime Minister, parliamentarians and top government officials? Fake declarations of assets that become activated only when a petition is received or a court order is issued are an anachronism. They serve no meaningful purpose at all. Can there be an executable clause in the Constitution mandating each person seeking parliamentary election to possess a minimum level of education, not GCE Ordinary or Advanced level, but at least a basic University degree? Such proposals would serve to instill mass-confidence and trust in those who get elected to the highest Legislative body in the country. Instead of a mere inclusion of a constitutional clause as ‘rights’, can we include a ‘Bill of Rights’ declaring ethnic equality with punishment for denial of those rights, also inserted as a mandatory pursuit of ethnic harmony. Those pundits who say that morals and ethics cannot be legislated must be told to ‘go to hell’. The national priorities in the midst of the collapse of the nation’s very life and survival are more significant and critical than analytical punditry.

It is quite hard and grueling even to think on the lines I have penned in the preceding paragraphs. Yet, if a System Change is the number one priority, we must realize that it is hard and grueling to usher in a new change, a new era.

Hundreds of thousands of village masses do not have time to waste. A young village graduate who has failed in his every attempt to seek employment to suit his qualifications is reaching despair. And in his despair he is left with imperfect choices in life. He has been meeting his fiancée every evening on the bund of the nearby reservoir. While they exchange adolescent pleasantries each evening, they also wander into the dreamy world of future as to what they would do with their first child once they become parents. The young man is singing his damsel to sublime calm and delightful peace. Yet they do not seem to experience the delight of beholding either sunrise or sunset. They live in the hinterland of the country and sunrise is witnessed over top of the hillock in the east or receding sunset is beheld when darkened skies tell them that it’s time to go home.

Such consummate joy of life will never visit them again, for the time of youth is fast disappearing amidst twilight like a fading silhouette of a weary farmer retiring for the day. Empty words of politicians and harsh realities of day-to-day living are too weighty a burden to endure. A system change has to come. But that change cannot be a dictatorship of one person, an oligarchy or of the proletariat; it cannot be a monarchy, nor can it be an authoritarian regime that does not trust in elections. It must be a representative government, a government that can be representative of the people, yet with full control of the flow of matters of life; matters that really matter to the people. It must be a government with a stern, steady and stoic leadership. Unfortunately for the youth and his pretty damsel waiting for the splendor of the evening sunset beyond the unyielding woods in the distance, we don’t have such leadership in the current, stagnant and ugly mosaic of undisciplined and incompetent regime.

I just want point out the salient features of this article. 1) System change is not merely regime change / individual change 2) Voters as much as corrupt politicians are responsible for our successive failures. 3) Sociocultural effects of mind destructing entitlement syndrome is incalculable 4) the corrupt politicians promise more entitlement to earn votes 5) A system change, if not impossible, is extremely difficult in Lanka 6) Sociocultural and economic gap so created by harmful and disastrous economical policies based on SHAM ideology and doctrine (socialism) is ceaselessly widening 7) Current elections are to replace corrupt and dishonest with more corrupt and more dishonest frauds, of their own. 8) Our SHAM constitution is not capable of delivering a system change that is real. 9) Now, please tell me what is our chances of coming out of our man made misery ??? 10) To add to what Vishwa already mentioned, our so called intellectual voters are only capable of showing here , showing there ( in depth compare and contrast analysis), try every means to justify, enable, many pretend to be naive or blind (not any more because of hunger pangs) 11) Their stupidity is akin to heavy smoker / alcoholic , pointing to another who is not yet sick , forgetting all the rest who are severely sick or deceased. Some lack abstract thinking , to the extent, taking words out of context arguing , education is not good enough / requirement to do politics.

      2) I am glad that FINALLY you have ACCEPTED that mere ‘Regime Change’ will NOT result in the required ‘System Change’.
      .

      3) On 5 December 2022 I told YOU:
      .

“It is disappointing that you are AVOIDING my query – “Could there EVER be the required ‘system change’ by mere ‘regime change’ (whatever dispensation) WITHOUT addressing the CORROSIVE link between politicians/professionals/private sector/media who are the ENABLERS of Sri Lanka’s crisis?””

Why don’t you ‘go the whole hog’ and ARTICULATE the truism that REAL “system change” could NEVER be realized by ‘Aragalaya’ or any other WITHOUT addressing this CORROSIVE link?
      .

      5) On 27 December2022 I gave the same opinion (4) above to Dr. Ameer Ali when I inter alia told him:

I hope this will be the beginning of a MEANINGFUL debate on this subject which will also percolate to those in the ‘Aragalaya’. It is also hoped that the ‘Aragalaya’ will soon throw up a credible, competent, charismatic and courageous leader.

So that the middle and upper class could continue to enjoy all the benefits without sacrificing anything, … when the push come shove they could always find themselves living abroad or send their children away.

First if the saffronistas won’t reform their institutions by themselves then the state should force them adhere Buddhist principles:
          Stop Child Recruitment
Stop the saffronisa’s involvement in politics.
Force them to visit lay houses to beg for food,
Ban people visiting them in expensive/luxury vehicles,
Stop supporting a party or candidate.

Should be stopped from influencing politicians, police authorities, educational administrators, state policies, …..

Ensure Kamala, Shavendra and the 15,000 generals (retired, serving, aspiring, ..) should keep their mouth shut.

Gota please come back! ……… All’s forgiven.

It was better under Gota …… wish he never left the presidency!

Gota didn’t have a method to his madness ….. ol’ Ranil has a method to his madness.

Gota could hit or miss …….. Ranil’s aim is dead sure: on target.

Looking forward ……. to some Scotch on the icebergs.

Native, you are absolutely right. Off and on our so called opposition including Wimal, Udaya and others keep threatening ” soon there will be a nation wide struggle / protest where RW govt will be chased away” .(many deadlines have come and gone, and they keep extending their empty threats.). Plan is to provoke those youth so that these A. Holes can continue warming their chairs and enjoy the benefits. None of them did anything meaningful all these time , other than their usual far ting. By the way where is Pissu Vasu ? not a murmur. Is he around ?? I am sure the current generation is smart enough , not to get trapped.

The chosen one is already waiting on the sidelines, biding his time, patiently at Medamulana Walauwe along with his offspring Prince, for the President RW to finish off the unsavoury, unpalatable part of the remedy to be dispensed and implemented by RW!!!??
Thereafter he would “Strut out” with the Prince charming in waiting to embrace the kids and all to declare that the Saviour has arrived!!!??? And thence to sweeping victory for next massacre!!??
Anyway, that’s the Master Plan!!?? Hopefully untoward events of May 9th, 2022 hopefully does not repeat!!!??

The title of the article should be changed to –
Let the sunset of Gota be the sunrise of the people. Hate will take us nowhere, but unity can help us further in this very critical phase of the country’s economy. OR, OUR NEXT DONOR PARTNERS SHOULD BE FROM ADISABEBA…… LIKE IT OR NOT.
      .
Gota came to power by killing 270 innocent worshipers on Easter Friday. Anyone with common sense today will see that the Rajapakse brothers must be behind that disaster more than anyone else. Investigations have so far been blocked by the cooperation of the Rajapaksa gang and the so-called judiciary of the island.

leelagemalli, Do you really think that blocking murder investigations can erase the karma they create for themselves. Big mistake was that the 270 were in spiritual union with their creator and worshipping him at his throne room, though their bodies were still on earth with humans. No doubt, they would have received their resurrection bodies like Jesus did. The loss was to their families left behind.

          Dear DTG,
.
Listen, I was born a Buddhist in SL.
I believed in karma until recently.
Now I am a Buddhist but not a Sinhala Buddhist – I believe in Dhamma, I don’t like to say “Teruwan Saranai” because I only respect “Buddha and Dhamma”; “Sinhala Buddhist Laymen and Sinhala Buddhist Monks” when looking at Sri Lanka. By now I am bored of Sri Lankan culture and above all Sinhala traditions. Curse should go to Rajapaksa. In that context even, KARMA is not reacting…. whom to say ?
–
Yesterday “Sepal Amarasinghe- sinhala youtuber ” was put in jail mainly being based on the same Mahanayake Theros’ written complaints.
–
My qestion: the very same Mahanayakas stayed as if they were similar to ” kirimati gilapu kimbula- clay fed crocodiles” about the complaints made to them regarding constant child abuses in temples across the country.
Is this not paradoxial ?
.
Child abuse in temples across the country. Isn’t this contradictory?
.
The monks of the temple (dozens of them) often molest the child monks. Many of them in temples became “temple priests” because their parents had nothing to feed them. Free food and drinks are all free for the monks of the temple by Pattapal’s blatant lies.

We have children’s hospital clinical reports from some hospitals across the country about rectal bleeding in child monk victims.

With this being the reality of temple culture, even today it seems that Mahanayake Theros are not taking anything.

The Pali University story revealed more about the “criminal/terrorist/immoral activities of the monks” in recent times. Where is justice buried?
            :
But lately, I am puzzled as to how many multi-criminals persist, untethered by the so-called divine forces.
Not a single member of that famously cruel family was caught by the COVID-19 crisis. Let alone today. Where was Karma hiding?

The system change everybody and his brother seems to want MUST include pruning the influence of the clergy. Sri Lanka on closer analysis is as theocratic as Iran. Nobody can buy alcohol or meat on a Poya day. Bars are not allowed near temples. Monks are the arbiters of female fashion. Now, to cap it all, they are on the warpath against a social media activist who “insulted” the so-called Tooth relic, which is about 4 inches long.

Well, aren’t these the very things that Ranil is targeting? I really don’t understand why the author is complaining. Who, by the way, is against paid-for education? Yes, Wasantha Mudalige, who has been a “student ” for eight years and counting….
“Can there be an executable clause in the Constitution mandating each person seeking parliamentary election to possess a minimum level of education, not GCE Ordinary or Advanced level, but at least a basic University degree?” Is that really practical? Do we want more of the likes of G.L.Pieris, Ashu Marasingha, or Channa Jayasumana?
The author seems overly convinced of the value of degrees.

        One important ENTITLEMENT, Samurdhi Programme.
How long Samurdhi entitlement is available to the same person?
What does the state do to increase Samurdhi Programme receiver’s income over a period of time? The idea behind Samurdhi Programme is to reduce poverty in Sri Lanka. Are there any studies which measured the effectiveness, success and cost of this programme? Over the last 18 years did the country get value for money from Samurdhi?

The idea of Samurdhi should not be opposed however we should always remember the quote “Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime. – Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie (?)”

One more pressing matter, Ranil should stop and reverse Sri Lanka being militarised not only by the army itself but by the saffronistas, politicians, functionaries, and merchants of death.

China needs a huge army in order to open new fronts, Hindia also needs a huge army in order to protect its borders as well as from itself. Therefore Ranil could retain 50,000 men under arms and export 150,000 each to China and Hindia.

Both Milinda Morogoda (an experienced wheeler dealer is in Hindia) and Palitha Kohona (a seasoned war crime denier is in China) could work their butt off to find jobs for 300,000 …… protecting respective borders, ….. SJ could help Ranil.

      OC,
      .
The “ARAGALAYA” was supported by me and anyone with some sense until it was hijacked by fascists and a few other political thugs.
      :
But what he saw beyond helplessness as a headless head of state, the current president rejected no matter what he did.
Gota did not even allow the “presidential complex” to be misused as no other leader in recent history had done in his context.

There is initial evidence that “Gotabhaya frequented his office” as Ambassador Julie Chung prayed for him several times at the time. It was interpreted by our ignorant GOTA as “how close Ambassador Julie Chung must have been to him at such a critical time in Sri Lanka’s critical politics”. Many believed that Gota was far from responding accordingly. The damage they have done to this nation by infusing Ghanakka Katha and other myths into Gota, Mara and that maleccha family is incalculable.

Various speculative rumors are now spreading that the Sri Lankan Army did not respect the order given by Gota. Then the question arises, how current President tamed srilanken forces, immediately he became the president ?
Gota’s commands were ridiculed by the forces that could no longer respect the “inexperienced president”. This might be narrated by GOTA-MARA-SUPPORTERs in favour of them, whiile Wimal Buruwanse is telling something totally ” different conspirative new theory”:

      OC
The fiercest critics of RW seem to be those who advocated some of the harsh measures that he has taken since elected by parliament to his post.
I strongly feel that RW is trying his utmost to fulfill (even over-fulfill, as they once would say in Russian) IMF’s requirements even before the IMF parts with a penny.
I doubt RW delivering the country out of debt. But I am more dismayed at what his rivals have to offer, for they lack conviction.
      *
Meaningful change has to be along another route, but again the advocates of system/systemic/systematic change will not like it, as they seem to want to keep the system as much as they want to change it.

In my opinion, we do NOT have a GOVERNMENT but have a MAFIA that is running the country. This Mafia group should face a specially set up court that can go through their CRIMES.
A new constitution[NC] is the only way out of the current country state and not any kind of elections. NC should bar Religious dignitaries and criminals to dabble in politics. The LAW should be applied equally with the Judges being free of politicians’ manipulations.
We need to know how the political parties are getting the finance for campaigning.
I do hope there will be a turning point this year.

Naman, Good thought of Mafia in court for Crimes, but not in corrupt Sri Lanka. 2015 did it by votes in elections, the only possibility now. Can be done again by speaking to masses through genuine leaders with aragalaya votes. Constitution if amended and secular and not new, involves less waste. Religions should guide their followers in places outside the political field, or give up their robes and enter politics without misguiding and occulting the brains of the masses. Unexplainable wealth to be confiscated and given to the needy. Corruption needs to be punished. Family politics has ruined our nation.

          Thanks for the clip.
I watched only 10 minutes of the clip.
          I got the idea.
Don’t you think it is naive to think with just a youtube video clip people could get asylum status in Western countries?

It is sad we are blessed with such politicians.

How many times did these same people call for a system change? I am fed up with the phrase.
In the international arena, a new period of multilateralism emerges while the Western dominance wanes. While Russia and China lead the new world order, the Ukraine conflict marked a rapid rise of regional powers such as, Saudi Arabia, Iran, India, Turkeye and Brazil as against the Western dominance. Even Western Balkan countries are keen on maintaining their independence.
There is a new development in Ukraine.
When everyone was waiting to hear Russia’s retaliation over the Makiivka incident, Mr. Vladimir Putin astounded the world by ordering a 36-hour ceasefire in Ukraine on account of the Eastern Orthodox Christmas which falls on January 7. Out of all Christian countries (including all sects), there are only 12 Eastern Orthodox countries in the world, including Russia and Ukraine. Great leaders make great decisions without waffling!!! Russians should be proud of their President who is committed to preserving Russia’s unique and vibrant culture. As someone who is fascinated by Russia’s ancient history, I am proud of him too.
“Schastlivogo Rozhdestva” to Russians, Ukrainians and their militaries!!!

Champa, Hope this Orthodox Christmas effect is a lasting peace in all these countries. I think there is another Christmas later on in January. The world would be an excellent place for us if every day was Christmas.

A system change means the selection of Parliamentarians with the support of the voters who vote for sincere and trustworthy new members to the house and defeat all Rajpaksas, Mythiri, and others over the age of 70 years for retirement.
