Tamil Disappearances Activist And Mother Of Missing Son Arrested Under PTA, To Be Transferred To Boosa

Showing defiance even as its human rights record is coming under heavy fire in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Sri Lankan Government authorities have arrested a leading Tamil disappearances activist Balendran Jeyakumari under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act.

DBKJeyakumari and her 13 year old daughter Vibushika were presented before the Kilinochchi magistrate at the strange hour of 9 p.m. A detention order from the Ministry of Defence has been issued on Jeyakumari, to keep her in custody without trial under the PTA.

Jeyakumari is to be transferred to the Boosa detention camp in the Southern Province later tonight, according to some reports by activist groups.

Her daughter has been handed over to a child probationary officer and will be kept at the Kilinochchi hospital for treatment over the weekend, ACTC General Secretary and Tamil activist Gajen Ponnambalam tweeted.

Jeyakumari who is a resident of Dharmapuram in Kilinochchi was arrested after security forces and police surrounded her house on Thursday evening and interrogated her and her 13 year old daughter – her only remaining child for several hours.

The Tamil National Alliance said that the pair had been kept overnight Thursday in Vavuniya and were supposed to be presented before the Kilinochchi magistrate on Friday (14).

It is unclear why the police waited till night time to produce her before court.

The mother of four, who lost two sons in the war, lost a third child conscript in the LTTE at 15 years old after she surrendered him to the army in May 2009.

Activists say Jeyakumari’s best proof that her son was last in Government custody was that he was featured in the LLRC report that published pictures of ex-LTTE combatants being rehabilitated. Both the mother and daughter have attended protests organized by Mannar citizens committee and families that are looking for missing and disappeared members. She and her daughter have been featured in many video documentaries on the disappeared including “white van stories” which was previewed on Channel 4, Sri Lanka campaign said in a statement about the arrest.

The arrest and detention are sparking major fears of reprisals against human rights activists and Tamil civilians who participate in activism campaigns on various issues.

This poor Mother has lost all hope in the rule of law here – and even of life. Such is the tragedy of thousands of single-mother families, where the father was either killed or has gone missing. What has the learned Professor GLP to tell his Geneva audience of such cases of
sheer savagery. It is not surprising the immediate relatives of these people, now in the diaspora, are working day and night to fight for justice to these people under the heels of a military “junta”-like regime.

What has these Tamil families learned about terrorism and playing subservience to terrorist megalomaniacs. Nothing! They have lost their sons and daughters and husbands, and what was remaining have been salvaged for them by the government. Yet they never stop singing their praise to the terrorist murderers. Everything they did before and are still doing, are based on the fear of the terrorists guns.

This is the only language these traitors will understand. She should be freed taking into account the plight of her daughter but she should understand that she can’t collaborate with foreign elements against the country and go scot-free without any consequences. This will send across the message to Calumny Macrae that his paid actors are not at complete safety as well.

Firm decision gave us peace trying to accommodate the extremists only resulted in they thinking we are weak and they can use the world powers to bully us into submission. Good timing to remind the consequences of trying to sabotage peace.

A brutal regime supported by fundamentalist Buddhists are not bothered about the consequences to the innocent people of Sri Lanka. International community need to interfere and stop this brutality of fundamentalist Buddhists and racist actions and punish them and help the nation to bring peace and free from the racism and rule of the law.

International community is already interfering, collaborating with calumny macrae’s hate campaign is what got her into trouble in the first place.

Calum Macre is journalist. He is simply telling the truth based on the evidences gathered from those who witnessed the massacre by Sinhalese armed forces. It is the Sinhala leadership asked for international interference. In 1970, Sinhala leaders asked for India’s interference. In 1989, Rajapakse invited UNHCR. In 1989, Your Sinhala states begged international community to ban LTTE.

Pot smoking heads keep thinking lying at UNHRC will keep moving their business. Or, probably, when they change the Draft Resolutions on 18th, the goons want to have it changed it in the proper direction.

Do you expect the mother to give “THE TERRORIST STATE” a gold medal for “disappearing or killing” her son? This is the style of “reconciliation” the Sinhala Budhist are talking about!!!

      Liberal One,

You say…..”This is the only language these traitors will understand. She should be freed taking into account the plight of her daughter but she should understand that she can’t collaborate with foreign elements against the country and go scot-free without any consequences”.

Have you forgotten that is was your Big Boss…”Maha Eka” was the biggest traitor when he went to Geneva in 1989 with Vasu Dewa Nanayakkara to betray then Sri Lanka and UNP government against atrocities carried out by Sinhala Armed forces against captured JVP and other innocent people.

Wasn’t it not cllaborating with foreign governments to bertray SL and also using it to come into power.

Also don’t forget that during the 1988/1989 insurrection, it was his brother Gota who was incharge of Matale Army camp where now the mass grave and skeletons are found.

Please be more careful, specific and balance when you write your comments in future.

What is good for goose is good for gander.

      Good Luck.

There is no peace and GOSL does not want peace, this harassement of a Tamil human rights advocate proves that. GOSL and its supporters only want to ethnically cleanse the island of Tamils or keep them in a very suppresed state.

You calling her an enemy of the State only reinforces the view that you are an unabashed Sinhala supremacist. If one agrees with your logic then any peson in any nation that opposes the human rights violations of the State deserves what they get. If you were a White South African during the Apartheid era you would justify and support the incarceration and harassement of anti Apartheid activists.

A very good example of the arrogance of the Rajapaksa regime. It dared to arrest a well known woman and her child protestors on trumped up charges in the full glare of the UNHRC meeting. Regime change is the only solution.

How interesting that there’s no mention of her harbouring an “ex” terrorist wanted for the attempted murder of a police officer :D

@ado sivasankaran sarma -look bugger, there is a fellow called Karuna Amman in the Lankan parliament as a Minister. He murdered 600 surrendered policemen in the east when he was with the damn LTTE. You can kill 600 policemen and become a government minister but you cannot have an attempt on the life of one thug cop in sri lanka? You little weasel, I do not think you went beyond grade 2. Always writing some poppy cock crap and talking through your arse how great your hambantota buffalo is. This fellow and you deserve what VP got in mullivaikal.

This is what your Gotabaya says. Why charge her at the unusual hour of 9 pm? If what is said is true, charge her in court and produce the evidence. Why put her under the PTA? A few weeks ago, Gotabaya wanted to detain Ananthi Sasitharan for rehabilitation, all because she is asking what happened to her husband who surrendered to the army. Is it a co-incidence then that Jeyakumari too had been incessantly after the regime for her son who surrendered to the army in her presence. And how interesting it is to know that it is taking five long years (and possibly forever) to show the world he really exists or has been summarily executed by Gotabaya’s regime?

The reason why these two have been taken into custody is because they can give evidence at the international criminal court against Sri Lankan
army as the mother herself handed over her son to the army and now he is missing.

This woman a paid crying woman for LTTE is part of new LTTE harbouring ex LTTEer who was her so called missing son escaped from the custody. He shotand injured a police officer who was trying to arrest him from this woman’s house. All who crying for her are LTTEers…..Ananthis is not a saint, she is a wife who supported her husbands war crimes.

Just wondering as to what kind of ‘kudu’ Secretary of Death Gota is using when he gives arrest or detention orders and to a Kilinochchi woman to the notorious Boossa detention of torture center. He only knows his master plan.
Thank you Mr. Ruwan Bo(o)ru Wanigasooriya for Lankan media report and thanks a lot Professor GLP the Gon ‘Lies’ Peiris in London for uttering a very ‘smart’ answer with a ‘straight face’. You guys are great men Sri Lanka and the racist Sinhalese should be proud of…Hello hell BBS, Sihala Ravaya, JHU and all like minded men of great Buddhist principles; how happy are you all now ? Mahanayaka Theros; are you all okay with these ahimsa developments in this so called land of Buddha and Buddhism ? Even Mayanmar couldn’t do this type of benevolent and kind gestures for mankind. Great stuff and keep on, continue with everything according to Buddha’s teachings. Long live Rajapakse Buddhism, Rajapakse clan and Mahinda Chinthanaya. Everything will be great for the country and all can live in peace, I mean ‘pieces’…

Contrary to what Andy Sydney says in his comment above, this lady and her daughter were living in a house newly constructed by India for the war victims.

The full story has not emerged yet. However, the subsequent arrest of Ruki and the padre, makes both episodes ominous. The timing too seems lunatic. What is it that we do not see? Is it a fore taste of what is to come after the Geneva resolution is passed?
