Tear Up The National Flag And Dump It !

By Muhammed Fazl

Muhammed Fazl

Muhammed Fazl

I call upon all Sri Lankans to tear up the national flag & dump it & demand a new one to be designed so as to create a state of unity, equality & justice and to ward off the curse that has engulfed us all, all along!

Reasons for my conclusion;

1. SL never had lions nor was a bone ever found. We don’t have a national animal (we have a bird though) and the lion supposedly is to show bravery of the Sinhala race. The country was in existence thousands of years before the advent of the Sinhala race and it will continue to exist for thousands of years more even if the race becomes extinct! Talking of origins, neither the race, its people or the language is native and it all evolved from Asia, particularly India, Nepal etc…

And of bravery, now that is a far cry from reality. Sri lanka is a land of cowards & traitors who meekly surrendered it to the Portuguese, the Dutch and finally to the Britishers. Our independence was NOT hard fought, we just got it on a platter. Even at that stage, we were made to think that the Britishers were doing us a favor and we even said ‘thank you Sir’ on bended knees. Let us also NOT forget that it was the ‘Sinhala’ race that instigated and sustained the struggle for the division of the country during the 1983-2009 war!

Air force officer holds Sri Lanka's national flag as the sun sets at Galle Face Green in ColomboOne might wonder how the Sinhala race-led government sustained the war. First it was the ‘Sinhala-only’ policy followed by the marginalization of the minorities of every government in power that instigated the uprising of the Tamils, followed by the government’s lack of will to find a peaceful solution, give equality, separate state & religion & aiding the enemy with funds & weapons which resulted in it lasting longer with lethal devastation! Eliminating a rag-tag army of under 10,000 by a well equipped force of over 300,000 strong and dragging it for over 25 long years wouldn’t be considered ‘bravery’ in my book either. And questioning the alleged tactics of the SL armed forces, especially during the last stages of the war would definitely warrant an international War Crime Tribunal! But then again it is another long story…

The hard-line nationalist may want to portray the Lion symbol as bravery…. but in my view it is a flesh-eating, violent savage. No wonder the people of Sri Lanka resorting to violence & physical abuse at every altercation. A symbol of peace would be the need of the hour and an animal found in Sri Lanka would make it more sensible. My personal choice would be the elephant (majestic) or the peacock with its vibrant colors. (The government can request the Opposition party UNP to change their symbol).    🙂

2. It is funny to see the colors of the flag depicting the 3 different races (Sinhala, Tamil, Moor). If a dimwit thought showing the 3 different races separately as unity, I beg to differ. It is WRONG to show divisions, by doing so, it divides the population and depicts an imbalance of rights when one sect is given prominence. Race and religion is a choice one makes or is made by a parent, either at birth or by marriage or by conviction and that SHOULD be a personal matter. Besides, history has shown that race only divides the people and that no good has come to date.

Let us have one common color that does not divide the people based on ethnicity!

3.  The 4 leaves of the Bo tree is supposedly to depict Metta (loving-kindness), Karuna (compassion), Mudita (the joy in other people’s well being) and Upekkha (spiritual state) of the Buddhist philosophy. But is it a common practice or is it still in existence by and large? The answer would be a big ‘NO’!

It is not uncommon to see the flag-bearers of Buddhism (monks) themselves being lustful, vengeful, racist, and violent among other negative attributes. In this context, how realistic would it be for its ordinary adherents to follow the teachings of Lord Buddha?

So who is fooling whom with this poorly thought-of design that we call the ‘National Flag’ and that which we are ‘forced’ to embrace??

Mr. Fazl…Whew! what a furor. I commend your article ( and your courage in putting it out here, for public discourse) and have one observation. Most, if not all, of your vitriolic detractors use pseudonyms. Afraid of being confronted, I guess. That is why your article, with your actual name as the by line, is all the more commendable….and watch out for vans (of any colour :)) May the force be with you! :)

Tear Up The National Flag And Dump It !

Together with the flag, bury the Sri Lanka state that buried tens of thousands of innocent Tamils in 2009.

The Sri Lanka state has become immoral, decadent, lawless and untenable.

Let new democratic structures emerge from burial site.

Mullivaaikkaal is not the end of Tamils, it’s the beginning of the end of the state of Sri Lanka.

“Sure; destruction is going to be mutual this time!”

It is known as Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD-ness) in strategic parlance. Getting rid of descendants of Kallathonies would be made easier.

“We’ll destroy you invaders again and again like we have been doing for over 2500 years.”

No, you didn’t destroy invaders by yourself. Either Pandyans or Cholas helped you to evict invaders.

My elders tell me, last time when Hindians invaded this island it was Tiger flagged little boy VP foolishly got the invading forces out of this island while Sinhala/Buddhist armed forces were hiding behind their women folks.

The psychopath VP did all the kicking for and on behalf of the Sinhala/Buddhists to keep this island a sovereign state. It cost the stupid Tamils immensely.

For nearly 500 years this island was under white man’s rule. The last white man gave up this island without a shot being fired at him.

Don’t you think its bit funny?

It is my objective to kick the descendants of Kallathonies invaders (whose ancestors came from India, Tamilnadu as well as Bihar) out of this island.

Make sure you keep your bags packed.

“Either Pandyans or Cholas helped you to evict invaders. “

All chola kings are enemy of Sri Lankan Kings. Pandayan take assistance from Sinhalese to defeat Chola.

By the way why do u follow Islam (The religion which accept war rape and prostitution for life as right hand possess).

Some muslims say Islamic prophet muhammed is not a child abuser due to that time Child marriage was a common thing. But present day in Sri Lanka any girl over 18 can get married to any male over 18. But Over 50 girl getting married with girl in age range 18 – 30 happen rarely. Since most are not perverts. In same manner over 50 man got married to under 18 girl is a strange thing. Probably the man is a pervert. In that case Islamic Prophet Muhammed is a pervert.

      Yapa,

Do not forget that hundreds of thousands Sinhalese women are Slaving as Maids and Cleaners in Arab/Muslim countries to feed the rest of the Sri Lankans. Due to a few stupid idiots like you, they might pack those women back home. If that happens, the begging bowl that the Buddha gave you to beg the whole world will not be enough to feed you Modayas. You will have to die of starvation, so be mindful, you can talk bullshit but be careful when you act.

I can see that. The men stay at home dink, eat and rape their own daughters while their women work hard in medieval kingdoms to feed their useless, shameless, lazy husbands.

              It just like lion family.

However while the female lions go out to hunt food the male lions guard its territory from alien invasion.

But in your case when IPKF invaded this island you were hiding behind your grand mothers.

Though male lion is lazy it is providing protection to its family.

You are not even qualify to join Lions Club.

Not free education. The problem is Sinhala only education forced on the population, who ought to have the human right and option of learning in other world languages. It is continuing imposition of an imported Prakrit (Indian) language masquerading as the ONLY legitimate local language in the country. It has produced generations of ignorant people, unable to interact or to state their case effectively, with the rest of the world. Now wait for the next Geneva circus show and see the results of their suicidal language policies. They will make fools of themselves and betray our indigenous motherland, Ceylon.

Political leaders – in general – should be exemplary. Then only the folks will learn from them.

Is our curent leader – exemplary ?

How many out of his kitchen cabinet ministers are considered as exemplary – I mean by their performances ? Not even one single person… how shameful they should be ?

President is a talented leader if one wants to crush the enemies by all unethical ways; could not the previous leaders be unable to do the same job if they thought Rajapakshe-ideology should be what should have been applied in the elemination of teorror ? Why JRJ, DW, and CBK repeatedly made efforts to solve the matter through discussions ?

      – this is the only reason why the ICs have been cornering MR regime calling as “undemocratic” and ” authoritarian” with all brutal features.

Paradoxally, over 70% predominately buddhist nation voted for his rule for the first term and the second term was illegally robbed by using his all abusive tactics.

To this day, Rajapakshes have sharpened the picture that the opposition folks and International communities predicted to be the case during his second term. So only reactions from their side have been – repeately attack the messenger.

Let alone the absence of Lions in continents other than Africa, this story of impregnation of a princess by a lion is for all intents and purposes a biological impossibility.

All Citizens must feel that they all are equal in this country. Any thing that favours any one particular group or discriminate any particular group must be removed from the system. Our flag gives indication that Sri Lanka is a sinhala and Buddhist society. Constitution provides that Buddhism must be protected by the government while no duty is cast on the government t o protect other religion. I can remember Shirani Bandaranayake (former CJ) used this provision to refused an application by a Christian organisation. Therefore we must not ronly replace the flag but also remove the Sinhala Buddhist foundation from our society.

    • 4

I am going to get in trouble for pointing these facts out. If you disagree, don’t attack me emotionally (sensible Buddhists don’t give into emotion – only BOGUS Buddhists). If you don’t agree, attack my argument with facts, and lets see.

Sinhala and Buddhist are only one component of Ceylon society, albeit a major component – which is recognised. Having said that, lets look at the bigger picture. Human history of Ceylon is 100,000 years old. Sinhala and Buddhist centrists seeks to only recognize the past 2500 years! They cant help it, most of them have been brainwashed to think this way and it will take a lot of common sense and re-programming to undo this mentality.

All, except the INDIGENOUS culture and religion must be recognised as imported (although equal). Then only the discrimination feeling can be eliminated. Also, by giving primacy to the indigenous culture, we can reduce unwanted Indian interference and sabotage of Ceylon. Indian sabotage of our culture and country has been a problem since the Indian brigand Vijaya invaded.

This is one of the most thought provoking and refreshing articles that ever appeared in the CT.The lion in the flag not only depicts the beastiality but also the fact that the country as a whole has still not come out from its primordial tribal nature. As some Isreli secret services noted some time back ‘they have still not come out from the trees’.Just because the writer belongs to a particular ethnicity all these brave people start bashing him. There was never a freedom struggle in Ceylon. From Gongodagola Banda to Puran Appu all were bandits.Keppetipola fought only to gain kingship to himself.Henry Pedris was leading a gang of plunderers.D.S.Senanayake and other so called freedom fighters were donning the Europian attire and were ‘fighting’ the British,at the same time vying for knighthoods,OBE,MBE and other honors that were bestowed by Royal masters. So much for the freedom struggle!I fully endorse the author’s view that the national flag should be completely rejected and the national anthem which does not fully reflect the sentiments of all people should in the least be amended. In fact do we need a flag or an anthem to proclaim the existence of a nation, especially in the context when borders are being shattered and physical barriers are becoming slender in the onward march of humanity?

This flag must be changed cos it shows a lame old toothless lion holding a sword with its tail raised up indicating that its an old tooth less lion always with a bad stomach purging all the way, this is no way to depict a flag for a country, however its high time this unacceptable flag is re-designed to show all communities to live in peace and harmony, sri lanka is a multi racial country and must be reflected in a new flag to be designed by an open minded non racial person.

  • 4

Oh my god yes !! hasn’t this yard of Indian nylon always been the major cause of racial disharmony !!

How daft was I to think the improvements should be political reformation, education and a secular discourse – why bother, just change the flag and we’re sorted !!!

Since Sri-Lanka is such a wonderful host of nature – I think we need a green flag, possibly with white letters to connote purity and simplicity.

It may be time to redesign the flag.A country’s flag should ideally flag the uniqueness of the country. So let us think of depicting something on the flag which is unique to srilanka and what we are reknowned for.One that comes to mind is the beautiful tea estates with women plucking the leaves. What else are we well known for.Cricket?some kids playing barefoot softball cricket.Elephants?bathing at pinnawala.A beautiful leopard on a branch of a tree in yala.A beautiful beach full of tourists and surfers.

Two birds with one stone.A national flag that promotes the country too.

also i think the beautiful and unique sigiriya frescoes with those topless women are a must to depict our ancient civilization.

Probably a fitting national flag for crime filled Lanka may be a skull and two crossed bones..It’s shame and disgrace to depict 4 holy Bo leaves and a mighty lion. Mohammed Fazl wrote this in sheer disgust and frustration of what’s going on in this nation today. He is the real and true patriot and not those saffron robed thugs or the white clad fake Buddhist politicians.
Mohammed Fazl is not insulting Buddhists or Buddhism. Read his article again without prejudice, accept the facts, see the reason, do not brand him as a racist or whatever you call him. He is sincere and honest and his straight forwardness shouldn’t be taken as anti-Buddhist or anti nationalism. He didn’t hide behind a pseudonym. His honesty should be saluted. Sri Lankans who are so used to denial of every thing, just like the politicians who deny all atrocities and crimes comitted locally and internationally, should wake up smell the roses or evils happening around them without prejudice. Just because he is a Muslim doesn’t warrant criticism of this nature. He deserved to be listened to. The overall paranoid is absurd in a country of 75% Buddhists and no one can destroy Buddhists or Buddhism but themselves if they behave crazy and mad.
We have murdered enough minorities and harassed other religious people more than enough. It’s time to stop this inhuman, un-Buddhist behavior at once and live with civility. We are in the 21st century and behaving like barbarians is unbelievable. People are on the move, migrating all over the world, living in peace with others in many other countries. Why are we still living in a well like frogs ? Open up your hearts and mind. You are trying to live like normadics, aboriginals,or like Iranians under Ayotollah Khomeini. Leave politics, race, religion a side. Grow up, be human, be realistic and wise ! Things will automatically get solved by itself.

Then what is the problem of this man? Is he trying to bring the Arabic flag?
