Ten Days That Can Subvert Democracy

By S. Sivathasan

S. Sivathasan

S. Sivathasan

“The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.”– Karl marx.

Lenin changed it. In 1917 John Reed saw it, “with the eye of a conscientious reporter” as he puts it. “A slice of intensified history” he calls it so aptly. With the same intensity, the flow of Sri Lanka’s history may get perverted. Ten days from tomorrow are enough for it. International vigilance can thwart it. The country is alive to it, but remains unprepared. Danger is from the incumbent President, his coterie and his familial regime.

Portents to Make One Shudder

The caption of this article is with reference to Sri Lanka. It is in the same vein as John Reed’s ‘Ten Days that Shook the World’. It is phrased advisedly. Though confined to a small nation, it can escalate to earth shattering proportions. To the polity the eruption may even be volcanic. Signs are ominous and many have sensed it. Ceylon and later Sri Lanka never before stood so precipitously on such unpredictable terrain.

Ten Days in 1917

The allusion is to ten decisive days of the Russian Revolution. As the first successful Communist upheaval it was epoch making. The book too was same. Lenin wrote in the introduction in 1919, “With the greatest interest and with never slackening attention I read John Reed’s book …”Lenin with his sense of history took the title as appropriate.

Mahinda Rajapaksa 1

I have used ‘Ten Days’ many a time because it is not a brief period. It can change history. It can also pervert it. It can supplant humanism. It can rivet fascism. It can reinstate democracy. It can subvert it. It can make a difference between War and Peace. On this dilemma stands Sri Lanka today. In this background assistance is appealed for. A Tamil Hindu saint sang 1000 years ago “without a reminder a mother feeds milk to her infant”.

Positive Action

The imminent need is to forestall blood-letting. When the state itself sets out to lacerate democracy, people’s retaliatory capacity cannot match. The powers to assist, themselves know who they are. The course is preemption, in preparation and strike. It is known to benefactor and beneficiary alike. Why an SOS? The land is over soaked. The people can spare no more blood, whatever the thirst of it for some. It is also popular knowledge that Platonic Love, however amorous can bring forth nothing. When the yearning is for a child, words of solace are poor comfort.

Resolute Approach

Who are these benefactor powers? Who contributed most to save Europe from Hitler? Who saved the Bangladeshis from annihilation? Who tilted the balance in Libya? The world knows who. On them Sri Lanka would place her hope. To talk of international community is only to solicit opinion. To cite the UN, it is for speeches, resolutions, funds and delayed deployment. Those reputed for action are for immediacy and resoluteness.

Dejected, Despondent and Desperate

The worst moment for a tyrannical regime is when it begins to wilt, wither and waste away. This is happening to the incumbent President of Sri Lanka, with erosion of support by the day. The experience is shattering. Certain defeat is writ upon the President, the brothers and the cabal. But the mood is dangerous to the polity when the military is in desperate hands. A finger can reach for the panic button. It is precisely to prevent such an eventuality that the nation would like to see a well synchronized counter measure in place.

Anxious Ten Days

To all Sri Lankans, coming days are anxious moments. How anxious can be appreciated by those who experienced the days of The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962.

Yes the next 10 days are going to be very anxious for all Srilankans. There could be very crucial crossovers on both sides, accelerated violence, more mudslinging, more news of corruption records, and many more to follow. However, with vigilance and intelligence most of these could be overcome.
With most of the parties supporting Maithree there would be a bigger response in the public meetings and the last minute deciders and/or the swing voters would go in the way of Maithree ensuring him of a great victory. Let us hope and pray all will end in a peaceful manner.

      Yes, I wish!

However, I strongly feel that GoRa will have a go! This ill-tempered idiot with dysfunctional thinking process WILL stage a military coup on 9 Jan as the results are announced. He will not succeed, but the question is as to how long he will be able to keep and command the troops on the streets and bring the political process to a standstill and bloodshed.

The ULTIMATE SCHEMER has schemed well and ahead when MARA THE SCHEMER was planning the communal card to obtain 100% vote of the Sinhalese.

When MARA was executing this plan through the BALU SENAS, THE ULTIMATE SCHEMER ABOVE US ALL,planned his course of action from within, just like PHIROUN raised MOSES within his compound not knowing that his downfall is going to be through this baby, while killing all other male children born during that time. Similarly MAITHRI was raised within TEMPLE TREES to topple his mighty government.

Believers will definitely see a striking resemblance between PHIROUN/MOSES history with that of MARA/MAITHRI Saga.

HE is all powerful and best of all Schemers. Unbelievable…Believe it.

Listen pal, if Mahinda falls it is due to the people’s vote, not God. The All Powerful Schemer can’t even prevent planes from falling out of the sky, can’t even prevent stillborn babies, can’t even prevent Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin…..there is no All Powerful Schemer.

    • 4
      1

The Schemer continued to play the race card and the time has to Sinhalese to realise that Sinhalese are who are paying ultimately paying the price if they continued to give Mahinda another chance to ruin the nation. It is the last chance for Sinhalese to vote in an election and after this election it is a rule under a King similar to that of Sadam Hussain, Gadaffi, Polpot etc. He may allow people to open their mouth only to eat.

The hyena and the jackals are starting to circle. Salivating at the prospect of fall of their prey. Each wants a share of the meat.

Some want revenge, such as Sarath Fonseka and Chandrika for insults by the regime.

Others want to get back power that they lost or were incapable of achieving, such as Champika and Ranil.

Others such as this author savor the possibility of new employment?

      Robert.R,

You come across as a sinister or somewhat subversive individual. Don’t you think that many people, whatever their past and background, are genuinely concerned about the direction that MR regime is going? Don’t you feel that people of the calibre of Sivathasan can have and project his concerns even though he made mistakes in the past in your eyes?

Any action that will bring back good governance should be taken; defeating the MR regime should be the catalyst to that quest.

    • 3

    Ansar,
MR has been plotting ever since he was a minister to become head of the government and leader of the nation.
His first big break for finances for this enterprise was the total psunami donation which he funnelled into his private account.
The idiotic Sarath N Silva was compassionate and gave him a break – which he now regrets.
Sirisena may have been plotting likewise – nothing wrong in that, is there? I HOPE HE WINS – to free this land from the deadly, pitiless, profligate dictatorship.

    Mr Sivathasan:

A 2004 article by reporters without borders (RSF) indicates that whats happening now is NOT new.

    http://archives.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=9646

Given that the opposition includes the likes of:
Rishad Bathiudeen (who threatened a sitting judge and attacked his court premises in Mannar)

Chandirka, under whom attacks (physical and via state media) were known.
Chandrika who led the UPFA in that infamous victory in Wayamba (1999) where even woman (despite herself being a woman) were stripped naked and paraded and she turned a blind eye. Chandrika who took secret oaths to try and stay an extra year (power hungry like Mahinda who is going for a 3rd term).

Champika who has spoken out against minorities and has defended the likes of BBS.

I suspect that there will be more of the same even if the opposition comes to power.

The main differences, my friend, is that neither Maithri nor Ranil, unlike Rajapaksa, are tainted by corruption, dictatorial tendencies or thuggery.

Surely in the current culture of Sri Lankan politics these two men are like gold dust and should be given a chance to prove their claims.

Post election violence has been increasing exponentially. If we take the 1977 election violence what began as a UNP-SLFP soon turned out to be an anti Tamil pogrom.Mr.Sivathasan has quite rightly predicted that any violence if any will be on a scale never seen before.I would think if Ms has a clear win lets say around 60% chances of a blood bath is less. The problem will arise if it turns out to be a close finish.A mutiny within the security establishment is also a possibility. Will all these turn against the minorities now that both the TNA and SLMC have pledged their support to the CC? One thing is certain. This is a DO or DIE battle for MR.

  • 1
    1

Very good analysis indeed. There is a danger to democracy in SL starting from 5th January. SL may end up like Myanmar and Thailand.

MR claims India is a relative and China is a friend. But Wimal Weeravansa stirring up that NE are going to be merged. Last time MR demerged them because of a Judicial decision. The 13th Amendment agreed by a SL with her Relative India was ignored. India was made a joker of SAARC.

Now the regime is making use of Wimal Weeravansa to frighten the South saying that NE will be remerged if MR loses the election. But Wimal Weeravansa is conveniently forgetting or ignoring the fact that TNA is for a united Sri Lanka.

Now with the new proposal to grant dual citizenship to those in 10 western countries, there is a strong possibility from 9th January there may be an army take over if Maithri wins. The selective grant of dual citizenship may pave the way for the formation of S S type army under 3rd REICH during Hitler time.
This way their slogan of ” Lova thinum maga ” will become a reality with the support of an emerging Asian Empire.

    Mr.Sivathasan
Mrs Sasitharan Northern provincial councillor and member of the TNA has declared that she would not cast her vote in this Presidential Elections. As a person who received maximum votes in the Provincial elections, many Tamils would follow suit. That will go in favour of Rajapaksa.
You have categorically stated that the Tamils have to vote in this Presidential Elections with the sole idea that they would vote for Mr.Sirisena. But you have not given any clue as to why they should vote for Mr.Sirisena except for the wrong reason that it is good for the Tamils and good for the country. Mr.Sirisena is not the power in the opposition coalition. It is Madam Chandirka and Ranil Wickremasinghe and the JHU in it. In the propaganda meeting held yesterday in the North by the Opposition candidate, Madam Chandika has told that the Armed forces have to be in the North for security purposes. Her statement shows the same policy as that of Rajapaksa. I would like to ask her the security protection is from whom and for whom. Is it from India or the Tamils who live there? She has not mentioned anything about power sharing by the Tamils. As for Fonseka who was present at that propaganda meeting, I have not heard his speech but I have heard his mind when he once said that the Tamils should not ask for anything but accept what is given. I am really sorry Mr.Sivathasan to state that your article “Ten days that can subvert Democracy” is nothing extra ordinary to comment.
I wish to remind you Mr.Sivathasan that there is a curse on the Tamils for a long time and that has got to be removed for the Tamils to achieve something in Sri Lanka. Half the Tamil population is not in the North of Sri Lanka now and the Land grab by the Sinhalese in the North is going to destroy the existing Tamil population and their culture. God help the Tamils.

A twist to the anxiety and unknown future is refelected in a webnews item, as below:-

“The president also hoping that a dissolved parliament will prevent Maithripala Sirisena and Chandrika Kumaratunga from gaining control of the SLFP. He is to take this decision by disregarding the pension entitlement of MPs in the present parliament, who are eligible to draw a pension only if their term extends up to end-April 2015. He also wants to build a strong opposition and fight back.”

The 100 day target will have to be forgotten- What is the legal position
re dissolving the Parliament on 10-1-15???

    Mr. Sivathhasan –

In ten days, once again you can become an Advisor to Chandrika!

    Is that so?

Wait and see, Rajapaksa will win the Presidential election with a huge majority against your favorite Chandrika cum Sirisena.

Once Rajapaksa will be re-elected, people like you will ashamed by what you all wrote.

  • 4

Around 18 hard core criminals have been given a so-called Presidential pardon. Why at this time? There must be some reasons behind it! As never before even the armed forces are said to be engaged in political campaigning for the current regime. Many more efforts to subvert rule of law and democracy over the next ten days could arise.

Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty! Let us hope that the ordinary masses will be much alive to this dictum.

TNA Sambandan and his Apprentice Abraham say, they have no agreements with anyone.

Thy only want to kick out the President..

This was reported in the in the mainstream, Elite , Anglican and Vellala media in Colombo.

US, UK, Canada and Sweden have been trying to do the same for full five years with the UNP, without any progress.

They finally managed to hire SLFP Sirisena to do the job.

So Sambandan and Sumanthiran reiterating it in public in contrast to their machinations the past.

What happened to their demand for full 13 A with Police Powers and Land Rights?..

The answers were bit different from the two.

    Sambandan said nothing has changed,

He expects Sirisena to grant them what they are asking .

Most probably he is hedging his bets on Ranil taking over from Sira and Champika.

There are clues how Ranil can do it.

Only conclusion we can make is without an Exec President it will be all back to square one.

A new TNA in the garbs of LTTE can come along .because Sira has culled the Armed Forces by half,

    No Soldiers in the North,

And Ms Pillai and her friends in UK , Canada and US embassies will ensure that no Army movements to the North under any circumstances.

That is the Democracy which our inhabitants , the great majority who are poor rural people from all ethnic groups who live in the South will inherit, if they are naive enough to pick Sirisena as their president.

    Mr Sivathasan,

You mean democracy could be subverted within the next 10 days as if democracy has not been already subverted.

Democracy is a process. Holding election is only a very small part.

Is it a fair election irrespective of the verdict?

  • 1

In the same vein as Dev I would like to add that Gothabahaya, Mahibda, Mythripala Sirisena, Champika Ranawaka and all schemers on whichever side had better remember another quotation from a great Persian poet and mathematician.

“The moving finger writes: and having writ
Moves on; nor all they piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line
Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it”

This side or that side, those who lie, cheat, deceive or rob will in time pay a bitter price for all their iniquity. The immoral shall not inherit the earth!

Mr. Sivathasan is totally clueless, that by churning out articles, which are propaganda pieces to prop up Chandrika, Maithripala and their coalition, he is repeatedly proving among other things, that he is just a serf of his feudal mistress Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

Excerpts from article by Dr.Kumar Rupasinghe, ex-husband of Sunethra Bandaranaike:

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    The fall of Jaffna

The fall of Kilinochchi is reminiscent of the fall of Jaffna, during President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s time in 1995. Victories against the LTTE were celebrated with much fanfare and General Anuruddha Ratwatte was seen hoisting the Sri Lankan flag in the Jaffna Kachcheri. On 6th December, the state controlled Daily News reported triumphantly “ Deputy Defence Minister Col. Anuruddha Ratwatte, deputizing for President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, on the invitation of Northern Commander Rohan Daluwatte, hoisted the Lion flag in the re-taken Jaffna town at a simple, but impressive formal ceremony at the auspicious time of 11.52 am on Tuesday (5 December)… Deputy Defence Minister Ratwatte inspected a guard of honour at the former Jaffna Fort before hoisting the national flag. Martial music preceded the hoisting of flag. Some historians have already looked upon the liberation of Jaffna, Yapa Patuna of ancient fame, as a historical parallel to its re-taking by Prince Sapumal in the 15th century by vanquishing the forces of rebel chief Arya Chakravarti. Prince Sapumal later ascended the throne as King Buvenekabahu IV..”

The Time magazine commenting on the victory ceremony held on 6th December in Colombo said thus : “… In a function room in the Presidential Secretariat, (broadcast live on national television), Sri Lanka’s leader (President Chandrika Kumaratunga) stood gravely before a line of tough-looking military officers. Deputy Defence Minister Anuruddha Ratwatte, fresh from hoisting the flag in Jaffna town, presented her with a scroll rolled up inside a red velvet container. The scroll was dated “full moon day of the month of Unduwap in the year 2539 in the Buddhist Era.” It read, “Your Excellency’s rule and authority has been firmly re-established” in the historic city. The territory was not referred to as Jaffna, its official name, but “Yapa Patuna” the term used by conquerors in medieval times. The victory of Jaffna was celebrated in a ghost town where over half a million people had left in a mass exodus and moved to the Wanni. The houses were empty and only stray dogs greeted the invading Sri Lankan army.
