Tense Standoff At Jaffna University As Govt Destroys Mullivaikal Student Monument Under Cover Of Darkness

Students staged a sit in outside the campus gates overnight on Friday after authorities demolished a monument dedicated to the victims of Mullivaikal, the final theatre of battle in the civil war, where thousands of civilians perished in May 2019.

STF troops were brought in to guard the campus gates after the demonstration began. STF also patrolled the streets around the campus.

Police on the scene attempted to chase away the new Mayor of Jaffna, Visvalingam Mannivanan who had joined the students who were protesting against the demolition. Two student protestors were arrested on the scene by the police.

The bulldozers arrived under the cover of darkness and reduced the monument to a pile of rubble.

The monument was erected by the students in 2019 and reportedly sculpted by a student who lost his father when his family was trying to flee the fighting in the Government designated No Fire Zone.

Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University Professor S. Srisatkunarajah said the monument could not be allowed to stand because permission had not been obtained for its erection on campus grounds from the relevant ministry. “We were told that things that were built illegally must be removed and they must be informed after. They said they found that out through investigation and that we could not keep this at the university,” the Vice Chancellor claimed.

However photos appeared on social media of the Vice Chancellor appointed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in August 2020 showing the monument to police and security forces personnel a few weeks before the demolition happened.

Former Head of Law at the Jaffna University, Dr K. Guruparan expressed concern on Twitter that the previous Vice Chancellor had been sacked for his refusal to remove the monument.

Activists viewed the demolition as the Government’s complete inability to tolerate remembrance and commemoration of the dead by minority Tamils.

Former Commissioner for the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka Ambika Sathkunanathan, commenting on the demolition under the cover of night, tweeted “forced ‘forgetting makes people remember all the more”.

“Why are you so afraid of a memorial that remembers those that were killed during the war? Why do people’s loss, memories, pain, heartbreak & tears frighten you? Is it because you know that pain, tears & heartbreak are more powerful than weapons & force?” the formed Commissioner questioned on Twitter.

Former co-editor of the citizen journalism website Groundviews Amalini De Sayrah tweeted: Sending machines in the dark of the night to tear down a site of memory for Tamil people killed on the orders of these very same ‘leaders’ is disgraceful, racist, cruel – very on-brand for #SriLanka, constantly threatened by mourning for victims of its violence. #lka

If anyone is still not convinced that the only lasting solution for SL is division of the island equitably into Sinhala Only Elam, Tamil Elam and Muslim Elam, I pity them. All these problems are because of them. The island is meant to be 3 nations.

  • 12
    8

How the malicious one nation concept is destroying Tamils, Muslim and Sinhalese. Take this as an example.

    * Tamils cannot have their own thinking. If it goes against Sinhala views, it gets destroyed. If Tamils resist it, they will be shot dead.

    * This is a message to Muslims not to oppose cremation dictate. If they do the government will simply destroy them.

    * This is a message to Sinhalese as well. As they know, Gota failed. But this is a nice distraction that can show them he did not. He is still the tough guy they dreamed of. After fooling Sinhalese with this, Gota will carry on his failed ventures regardless.

One nation concept is badly affecting all. The island was never meant to be one nation. Just because the British left it as a one nation does not mean it must remain so. Why did the British leave it as one nation? So that its citizens will kill each other and remain backward forever. Otherwise the British would have created 3 mono ethnic nations before leaving.

      Gatam,
Out of your rambling sometimes you let loose some real points too. Whatever it is, whether Britain did it purposefully or some underestimated mistake of Uncivilized Dharmapala brand of Sinhala Buddhists, these days not just Tamil, Sinhalese & Muslims are facing trouble, but even the entire world going to be in chaos by Britain leaving Ceylon as one country. A razor blade and a flower garland are in the hand of a monkey- Double Jeopardy. If East, West & Indian super powers fight their third world war in Indian Ocean Island, Ceylon, it would be an event stemming from Britain’s mistake in 1948.
Thank you for making people to realize what have happened in 1948, much late, but at least now, which has time to prevent the worst from coming by allowing the three communities to seek their independent path.

You are not very intelligent if you think SL as one multiethnic nation has any future. It does not. This is what President Gotabaya says. He says in 2006 Tamil terrorists bombed him and he gave them the return with interest. Their leader was dragged on all fours like a dog. He says many people ask him to be as tough as the defence secretary he was!

I doubt that inciting Tamil violence is in the agenda. The government knows that Tamils are still war weary, and that all their parliamentary leaders, despite their big talk, are incapable of saying boo to a goose.
The government may hope for some silly act that may fizzle out. No more.

I have only one word to describe this shameful act carried out in the night: cowardly.
    .
These extremist sinhala buddhists are such cowards I have no doubt when they are soon to be on the back foot we will see them cry and beg for mercy while claiming they are being oppressed. On that day I hope there’s no one who will show these extremist sinhala buddhist cowards any mercy. When are we going to see the removal of unwanted budda statues that have been illegally erected in Tamil and Muslim areas by these extremist sinhala buddhists ?? Those illegally erected statues should be immediately removed; especially because they are symbols of buddhist extremism, keeping them around might promote buddhist extremism to unsuspecting sinhala youth. We must save the sinhala people from falling prey to the insecure buddhist extremist ideas.

None of the governments that came after the end of the bloody war, made an effort to unite, admit to mistakes, and work together to put this country together, and progress. They all came with their selfish agendas, and the Rajapaksa’s are hell bent on covering war crimes, and dividing the country with racist policies and open discrimination.

It seems their main purpose is to continue the divisions, show Sinhala Buddhist superiority by pleasing the Buddhist clergy (some being terroristic), and taking this country backwards, thereby hampering progress and taking us back to economic woes. Do they want to see suicide bombers on our streets again? Check points that will affect the little tourism we may have? Make money off weapons deals? If so then they are doing all the right things to achieve those goals.

    Timing of the destruction of the Monument is certainly not coincidental;
or is this to divert the attention of the Sinhala citizenry down south of the country away from the worsening Economic Crisis that is slowly but surely throttling them.

Jack or Jill this monument was built in remembrance of the dead Tamil civilians who were deliberately targeted and killed by the Sri Lankan armed forces in May 2009 and not the LTTE and even if it was the LTTE so what . They are also humans who fought for the rights of the Tamils from state sponsored Sinhalese oppression that we see now. The person who designed this monument lost his father and family in May 2009 and designed this in his memory and all other innocent Tamil dead. As for the LTTE committing war crimes don’t make me laugh. What they did was child’s play compared to what the Sri Lankan state did to the Tamils and is still doing. Sinhalese racist like you do not want to acknowledge the truth and try to justify all the atrocities committed on the Tamils as LTTE , thinking this will fool the world.

Going entirely by this article, it is clear that people in the North are divided over the existence of the monument, mainly citing reasons of the authority of construction. I am sure that those in authority are not blind and not consider what result there can be on implementing the removal of an unauthorized construction. The protest etc. is an expected reaction. At the same time, its participants too can be under surveillance. This event won’t stop here. Although my suggestion may seem insensitive to feelings of people it is important that saner counsel must prevail. Residents of the Northern Province must work together to uplift their lot. Getting branded as a “Tiger-remnant” or “New Tiger” (Novus Tigris) at this stage is not in the interest of any of the residents over there.

Bad sense another Sinhalese racist apologist. Why am I not surprised. Who told you the population in the north were divided or it was erected illegally . You racist Sinhalese government. If it was illegal why was nothing done from 2019 till now? Tamil Tigers it is better to be branded a Tiger fighting for justice , that to be branded as a Sinhalese racist war criminal committing state sponsored genocide , ethnic cleansing and war crimes , that most Sinhalese are. You are a good example of this

        7

One becomes incoherent and irrational in a fit of rage. Describing one as “Sinhalese racist apologist” in one breath and associating one as a part of a “Sinhalese government” in the next breath reveals the extent of blowing hot and blowing cold. I am not privy to the legality of the construction but my words are clear in the previous comment. Mine is a thought meant to be considered by the average population of the Northern Province in the light of these activities to prevail saner counsel. Don’t forget that Intelligence Apparatus is now on a better footing and the categorization of a Northerner as a suspected “Tiger” at this stage is not in his/her interest in the long run.

There was no necessity for this deliberate act of vandalism. This was a monument to the dead , who died a horrible tragic death at the hands of Chingkalla Sri Lankan racist rapist armed forces. This is a war crime , desecrating and destroying a monument built to remember the dead. A deliberate act to provoke and humiliate the Thamizh people not only in Eezham but everywhere. Openly stating we do not care about your feelings and your dead. What was the reason behind this. This government is deliberately provoking the and humiliating the island’s Thamizh minorities . Not allowing Muslim burials , destroying Hindu temples and erasing monuments and history in Thamizh areas. So this what the Chingkallams want and elected these racists. We want Eezham. They have failed miserably in containing the Covid crisis and the economy and now made the island part of the Chinese take away menu. The largely racist Chingkallams will now dance and be happy , when they hear this and forget that they are starving or falling ill and dying of Covid. As long as the Thamizh is contained everything is fine . Even starvation and falling sick and dying.

Junius Richard Jayawardene was implicit in the act of setting fire to the Jaffna library under the auspices of Gamini Dissanayake and Cyril Matthew I believe. The graveyard tombstones of fallen LTTE cadres were also flattened, as was the underground bunker of Velupillai Prabhakaran. The idea is to not leave any trace of history that could be a place of remembrance or worship or paying tribute. In recent times, the Confederates’ leaders’ statues have been systematically dismantled in the US as they represented an era where mankind was ill-treated. With an enhanced defence budget and a diminished health budget, I guess things are being primed for a possible locking of horns..

    Disgusting how all play politics!
    .
The typo in the first paragraph demonstrates that this is a “routine article”. The Mullivaikal massacre was in 2009, not ten years later.
    .
And mine becomes a “habitual comment” reflecting the stand I take on events that I have no first-hand knowledge of. But this I know. The Tamil student politics is justified. I firmly believe that the massacres were real; it is “understandable” that the Sinhalese Army should have indulged in all that twelve years ago – but there is no justification for this government action now. I have read up a little from other sources before commenting.
    .
Don’t cheer these heartless politicians; let us, Sinhalese, perceive the pattern. The Rajapaksas want applause. For the past few months it has been “teaching the Muslims a lesson” by cremating some of them with no scientific justification. This is teaching the Northern Tamils that they are expected to be subservient. Finally, the military regime will turn their guns on us.
    .
There is Tamil politics – but you have every right to grieve, till the end of time, that the flower of your youth were massacred indiscriminately. I’m trying to empathise with you.

Historically, Jaffna university had been a pillar of Tamil resistance. Unitary Sri Lankan state and its institutions have done their best, particularly post 2009, to install military surveillance, appoint their lackeys at the top, and even change the Tamil character of the university through admission of sinhalese students. This recent development is not a shocker.

The Rajapaksa’s seem to be sending a strong signal that they are going to be implementing discriminatory policies against the minority. Is this the way they want to distract their majority base from their failed policies whether COVID or the economy?
This is asking for trouble. It seems the blood shed and the violence we have suffered with for decades have not been enough, they want more. It seems they want the country to forget their role in the slaughter of civilians in the North, and their refusal to hold those responsible accountable, and their arrogance in dismissing the calls for accountability from the international organization. Unfortunately for them, we depend on those very nations we criticize for the aid that we need to survive, and now that our workers are not getting us the revenue from those Muslim nations we send them to, we are going to be in dire straits when it comes to the economy.
The voters who voted for these racist rascals, seem to get what they voted for.
Bulldozing monuments will not erase the truth, it will only add to the anger and feelings of discrimination.

This unfortunate incident happened no sooner the Indian Foreign Minister left Sri Lanka. It is a cowarly act of the Rajapaksas. When the JVP Monument in the Southern University cannot be destroyed, there is no reason why the Government chose to destroy the Mullivaikkal Student Monument in the Jaffna University utilizing Jaffna University’s Vice-Chancellor’s name all of a sudden. This is an unwanted exercise by the Government. Is it to show that Rajapaksas are ready to challenge when the Indian Foreign Minister insisted that the aspirations of the Tamils should be addressed by implementing the 13th Amendment after meeting the TNA. There is also suspicion that Rajapaksas are firm that China is behind them. The only answer is that the North-East Province should be declared as an Independent Territory within the Union of India which will solve the entire problems in Sri Lanka and would not be a headache to the Tamils as well as to India.

      (3) Entire Ceylonese Jaffna Tamils have died or left the Country facilitating Indian Expansionism/Colonist project in SL supervised by the FP/TULF/TNA as the local proxy since Independence. The same is for hire Nationally and Internationaly to undermine human dignity further…..with all the business enterprise connecting all the chettiars and wannabes globally.

      (4) The ground is now clear for all the “foreign interest from a geo political point of view” as India can not have foreign military in their land but can do that without upsetting the Indian masses as required in Jaffna (Remember a Tamil guy? sold Jaffna to the CIA in 50’s funny enough no info on the net).

      (5) GOSL hands are forced to manage the situation with TNA as required for the foreseeable future….and hope enough Indians in the North to make the democratic mandate in the near future.

What about removing and bulldozing all these illegally erected Buddha statues and Buddhist Viharas, many erected on Hindu temple lands and premises and evicting all these illegal Sinhalese settlers in Tamil areas . These statues , Viharas and settlers are all illegal and have no place. Remove them too . As you are so fond of keeping the law. The north and east are the ancient historical lands of the Eelam Tamils and the Muslim Tamils who live in these areas. Why destroy monuments that have been erected to remember and honour innocent dead Tamil civilians. This is a deliberate act of provocation and also to humiliate the island’s Tamils. Openly stating you are nothing and do not deserve anything. We will not allow you to remember and mourn your dead, we will steal and erase your history. We are now you are masters. However the ordinary Sinhalese have been brainwashed by their elite and politicians to think , the public purse only belongs to them and for their sole benefit . The Tamils and Tamil Muslims are there to contribute to this and pay far more than their share of taxes but should not enjoy its benefits. You never tell the readers who the Tamils are. Who and who are included/excluded? In other words who are asking a political solution for?
I never fail to give my definition of Tamils:
All Tamil speaking people scattered across the island irrespective of their religion, caste or the date of arrival.
      Thanks.

There are remembrance monuments for Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna cadres in Jayawardena and Vayamba Universty premises. Pictures of statues and fallen comrades are published in tamil
JVPnews. com website today. ( I don’t think this site has any connection to the political party JVP ) Just like LTTE, JVP too fought for a cause they believed just and proper and would therefore urge the government not to demolish the same. Although we all know different rules are applied to each community, I still make this appeal.

By the way did anyone notice a Tamil person, may be a lecturer or Registrar, shouting at the students who tried to block the demolition, wearing a tie in midnight. Surely this brown sahib of Jaffna needs some treatment.

When the Sinhalese spit Venom on the Tamils it is Nationalism, but when the Tamils resist it is communalism.
The holy Ash and the Kungkumam elongated line (not pottu) on the forehead of the Vice Chancellor is a ‘Mask’ worn by him to mislead the Hindu Tamils that he is a God fearing individual. On the the contrary God seem to fear him.

This act shows how FAILED the present government is. In order to divert the attention of the people from economic hardships they face and failure to bring back middle east workers, the Govt has started this heinous act. They tried to divert attention earlier by not allowing Muslim burials, that has back fired and it has become an international issue. A crooks Ukrain tourist project another failure.
We see war memorials especially honoring the 30 year war in military camps. In fact we also see in some Buddhist temples murals depicting historic war victories. Are these symbols not a hindrance to the unity among citizens in the country?
When we see all the judges who are sitting on the benches today, senior police officers, armed forces senior officers, senior government servants, appointees to various committees by the President and PM, the composition of all these do not represent the ethnic mix we see in Sri Lanka. Are these not an hindrance to communal harmony in the country.
How stupid can this President be to make such errors. We all expected that he will be a President to all but to see he is a President not even to all Sinhalese but to a selected group of “Racial Sinhalese Buddhists”..
