The Fall Of Mahinda And ‘The End Of History’

“Of battles won or lost—but fought…”—Che Guevara

Having argued for years that (a) Sri Lanka under Mahinda Rajapaksa is no dictatorship but a unipolar democracy because of the meltdown of the centre-right UNP under its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, and (b) that the Opposition should put forward a liberal nationalist instead, my perspective has been at least partly vindicated. Why then was Mr. Sirisena my second choice rather than my first? An obvious reason is the Ranil-Chandrika factor (or factors). The second was his program of fast-track radical political reform and its possible centrifugal consequences.

The Opposition strategists got it right and therefore they won. They outmaneuvered and outplayed Mahinda Rajapaksa and his camp, and in that sense deserved to win. The Opposition’s strategy was to win the vast majority of the minorities and a minority of the majority, by generating a split in the majority vote. It worked. The game plan was transparent and had been rolled out by Mangala Samaraweera in a Sunday paper months ago. If the 2012 video of Dr. Rajitha Senaratne is authentic (and I haven’t heard any statement to the contrary) the game-plan went a few years back and had at least one particular provenance, at the outset. He addressed a media conference that year to disclose that prominent pro-Tiger Tamil Diaspora activist Charles Gnanakone had attempted to inveigle two MPs with large financial blandishments, accompanying it with a narrative that “they” had decided to replace the Rajapaksa administration, that Mr. Wickremesinghe and Mr. Samaraweera were on board, and that at an appropriate moment, ex-President Kumaratunga will return to Sri Lanka in order to break into the SLFP.

This bears very striking resemblance to what actually went down. It worked because the compensatory vote from the majority community was not sufficient to compensate for the near-total loss of the minorities and the slice of majority votes garnered by the excellent choice of Maithripala Sirisena as candidate. To reiterate, the Opposition game plan proved to be a good one, and it succeeded.

It could not have done so if not for the intrinsic weakness of the Mahinda Rajapaksa Presidency. President Rajapaksa paid heavily for the sins of his family. The post-war model of the Rajapaksa administration was not compatible with the social needs of peacetime. That postwar model was animated far more by the doctrine, attitude, mindset and discourse of Gotabaya Rajapaksa than Mahinda Rajapaksa. If Mahinda Rajapaksa won the war with the managerial dedication of Gotabhaya, he lost the peace and therefore the election also because of the personality and policy impositions of those who failed to transcend that time and progress towards normalcy.

When the TNA leadership met President Rajapaksa before the investiture of Justice Wigneswaran as Chief Minister, they told him that they could contribute a million votes, should the Northern Provincial Council be made viable. The first item on that agenda was the replacement of Gen Chandrasiri with a civilian governor. As it turned out, Gen Chandrasiri was not merely retained but also extended, thereby dashing the hopes of the TNA and going contrary to the indications given to India. That decision was pushed through by Gotabhaya. There went the last chance of Mahinda Rajapaksa obtaining any portion of the TNA’s vote bank.

It was Dr. Rajitha Senaratne who told me that Mahinda Rajapaksa had ordered while still overseas, the arrest of the BBS rabble rousers after Aluthgama. That arrest was thwarted by an intelligence report presented to the president upon arrival, that any such crackdown would probably trigger nationwide rioting. That dereliction, coming on top of the optics of Gotabhaya at an event featuring the top BBS monks, with the consequent impression of tolerance if not patronage of the BBS by the state apparatus, caused the loss of virtually the entirety of the Muslim vote.

The grave mismanagement of foreign policy, again driven in the final analysis by the hardline defense bureaucracy, lost us the support of India, while the BBS factor lost us the Islamic states of the OIC. This created a broad Indo-US-Islamic external coalition with considerable local assets, and a vested interest in regime change. It worked.

The main challenge that President Sirisena faces is twofold. One is domestic geopolitics. The majority of the majority ethno-religious community, the core of the island’s demographics, did not vote primarily for him but rather for his opponent, President Rajapaksa. The other is that the program and platform of President Sirisena involves an untested systemic transition which may result in unstable multipolar ‘jockeying’ and prove susceptible to external and minoritarian pressure groups. I would urge him to drop the abolition of the executive presidency and the fast-track approach. Instead he should be a normal President, serve his term while retaining executive power while slimming down the surplus power of the executive through a gradualist and consensual approach. A referendum on whether the executive presidency should be abolished, retained or reformed would be a good idea. If he sticks to a fast-track abolition (and permits neoliberal economic policies as well), the Sri Lankan State will not only be scrubbed clean as it should be, but also vulnerable to centrifugal pressures (especially at its ethnic periphery) and thus weakened, retrenched, diminished. Theda Skocpol has through painstaking socio-historical research, sourced much of violent upheaval in such a retrenchment of the state.

As an early critic of the negative postwar trends, I could see it coming. However, I chose to get off the fence and support President Rajapaksa (just as I did President Premadasa), because I regarded and still regard him as far more sinned against than sinning, and his merits as greatly outweighing his demerits. Put more simply I tend to support the hero—or, as in this case, the anti-hero–especially if he is an underdog (provided it isn’t rabid, like the Tigers or the JVP of the ’80s). I have no regrets.

What has happened is not merely the defeat of a President. It is the end of a cycle; perhaps even an age. What has dawned may be a new one or a return to an older pre-war period. That remains to be seen. Yet there is something else beyond this. It is the defeat of a certain idea, project, paradigm, way of being and set of values, which may be traced back to the political struggle against the CFA and reaching a high point in the military victory and diplomatic success of the last war. The ethos could be regarded as that of wartime, or more dramatically, the Spirit of 2009. Despite all my criticisms I supported Mahinda Rajapaksa in all three of his elections- 2005, 2010 and 2015—because I shared those values more than I did those of his opponents on each occasion. This time five million people shared those views but that was not enough.

What has happened is not only an end of a paradigm but a more basic sociological phenomenon. The father of ‘elite theory’, the Italian Vilfredo Pareto, wrote of a pattern in the history of societies of the rotation or circulation of elites of two main types, for which he borrowed the symbolism appearing in Machiavelli’s The Prince, and dubbed the Lions and the Foxes. Mahinda Rajapaksa was a Lion and he represented the age of the Lion. He and it have now been replaced by the age of Foxes.

In his “The End of History and the Last Man”, Francis Fukuyama famously applauds the definitive victory of liberal democracy as a universally acceptable idea of organizing governance, but his applause is deeply tinged with regret. He views this victory as one of the end of the heroic age and values that Nietzsche had extolled (looking back nostalgically at Homeric Greece). Nietzsche had been bitterly sardonic about the imminent triumph of what he termed “the age of the flea” and the arrival of the un-heroic Last Man, whose consciousness was essentially that of a consumer. Fukuyama, a liberal who applauded the victory of liberal democratic capitalism, was nonetheless enough of a philosopher to lament that arrival.

All that said Maithripala Sirisena as President is infinitely preferable to having Ranil Wickremesinghe or Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in that role. The people have voted for change and the unipolar situation has ended. I hope the new leadership will reconsider the fast-track systemic change and instead consult the people at a referendum before undertaking any adventurist experiments with the constitution.

Don’t be too hasty in explaining the “win”. It is illegitimate.

A massive exercise of “computer jilmart” organised by the British embassy in the conduct and results release of the 2015 Presidential Election has just been revealed.

The conspiracy has involved posting the results on the Wijesya Newspaper site (Daily Mirror and lankadeepa”), exactly 5.30 hrs before (in British time) they were released in Colombo. The British embassy has organised the jilmart with Chandrika months before, and a team from Colombo University has been involved in launching it.

As part of the conspiracy, the Electoin Commissioner(Belekkaya) prescribed the use of a particular pen provided by him only, for voting. This pen has been used previously in the George W. Bush rigged American election of 2000. This explains the extremely close results against all pre-election signs, in the Rajapakse hinterland electorates.

An election petition will be filed in the very near future.

Come on folks. Yes! Many of us disagree with Dayan J – or de S, if you like. But let us not hit him below the belt. Although, I have much to disagree with him in his perceptions, I admire his learning, his analysis and his prosaic talents. Democracy, after all, has a distinguished placed for healthy dissent. I hope Dayan will, regardless, continue to contribute his thoughts to these columns – whether we agree with or like them being a different matter.

I believe I didn’t fail to notice the significance of his comment “excellent choice of Maithripala Sirisena…” If that is a message – so be it.

” Many of us disagree with Dayan J – or de S,”

He is still a war monger and a war crime denier. Dayan writes for his own amusement. He does not impress his wife with his writing. There is no need for any of us to respect and tolerate an intellectually dishonest person.

“But let us not hit him below the belt”

Please tell us what is the best spot to hit him.

The only way you can prick his ego, hypocrisy and arrogance is to hit him where it hurts.

This man has to be insulted every day of the week and 52 weeks of the year, three times on holidays.

Then, what about “Saththara Sumaney”, the President’s astrologer? He should be the prime conspirator by advising Rajapakse about his bad period ahead and 08th of January is the most apt date to hold an election!

Can you please investigate and report to us whether he is also a part of the “jilmart” orchestrated by the British High Commission as expounded by you? Thank you in advance.

it is just this man DJ feels that his voice is indispensable.

He has to get it LET ALONE today that he is the great looser of all times.

See, alone his articles posted onto CT contained only MADA against CBK, RW – he never thougth that CBKs fraction within SLPF will play a significant role in a victory. You made it clear not once several dozens of time in the past few months. Thanks to you Brother.
I hope new administration will focus on RULE of LAW and ORDER with effect from next few days. Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****Jaya wewa *****

Just because you do not understand what the man says, Just do not denigrate him, It is his opinion, He has a right to say it and there are lot of people who agree with him as well, That is what is called democracy, That is why people voted to Maithree? For the betterment of country we need a plural society with tolerance to disent,

Please argue with facts like a decent human being, This is the biggest problem in our country, Everybody try solve problems with fists. Bring people to kanatta! Is this how you teach your kids?

As He says, Gota’s policies together with the lavish lifestyle of his children and his family destroyed him, Changing flights to bring dogs, Likes of Mervin, Propaganda machines did the rest,

Mahinda should have listened to moderates like Dayan, Rajeeve.

Personally, I think Mahinda won because Sri Lankans are finding the cost of living is too high!

As he said, Maithree do not give executive powers too soon, Do things gradually, and first of all bring the rule of law, Do not let any thugs do politics and take the law unto their hands

I still believe apart from the hunger to the power, Mahinda is a moderate leader we had, People lighted crackers When Premadasa was killed, But later understood the value of the man,

          I think Srilal is right.
Not knowing your background – I am not sure whether you too get what has DJ been bubbling all these few weeks. I have not seen you before on this forum – to tell you the truth this DEBIDIYA had always been once sided – focusing on his personal gains. Even if former president MR attacked him calling him a powerful NGO worker, netherless DJ on the following day itself turned to MR s side. As it was the case with Dayasiri and other men who always got closer to most corrupted president, needless to say why DJ supported the man and his campaign on and on. I have watched him appearing in tv screens but always about the claimed victory against LTTE terror as if only MR and his vision achieved it. But people in this country since then believed that the credit should be shared by all that heartedly worked for the victory. Treating former Army commander in that way would not have done by anyone of this country buy Rajapakshes. By being close to Jackson anthony and the like artists- he got painted a Rajano story him to stay in power rather than focusing on nationl problem that kept the nation that backward for the last 30 years. He had the great chance to retire as an another Mandela but power greediness and not hearing to any good advisers destroyed president s image within a short period of time. If the opposition campaign held over 6 months, I have doubt many areas across the island would have voted against MR politics. He failed to realize that the way his politics moved was against peoples wills. Law and order is compaable to that of Pakistan or SOmalia today inthe country as I myself experienced it last November on my trip back to the island. His men worked him underworld settled what was not to be achieved. At the time, MS stages were stoned, President himself made jokes about it. this I myself watched on the screen, as if people lost even basic rights. All these were evident to all of us but even today, men like DJ are still coughing to MR further defending him. They even risk saying that it was not president but his wrong aossication made him so low…. anyways, now we the right respecting folks have finally achieved what we wanted… we have no doubt Jaya niyathai.

            Dear Samuel

Just because he supported Mahinda, You can not make a villain out of him. People have right to opinion and right to change their opinions,

I supported Mahinda, because I was convinced that his economic policy will bring fruits to the nation, I did not want it destroyed.
Democracy could wait little longer, Just because I had that opinion do not think I am an enemy, We all love our country, I am sure Dayan does that too, and you too, That is why we press our fingers in these key boards, democratically expressing our views?

I will wholeheartedly support Maithree for the good things he does and he is my president too.

All you have written here is Mahinda’a faults, Please give Dayan’s faults in facts, Defending Mahinda is his political right! Is it not? Like 47% of the country did.

We need everybody to build our country, Dayan did a great job defending our country during crucial times, Let us not forget it.

In the middle of euphoria, common sense should prevail.

By the way, Have they unblocked this web site in Sri Lanka?
We must unblock Tamilnet too, We do not have a war anymore!

WHY DO YOU THINK THAT SRILAL CANT UNDERTAAND WHAT THE JOKER DJ HAS BEEN TELLING TO US HERE ? I respect Srilal and the few of the commentators that did a great service on this forum – by bringing valuble comments. All these comments had a greater influence. Srilal was one among the few thought without CBK s mediation, nothing would have been easier for Today s opposition. He analysed it in a very intelligent way. Srilal thanks to you and other few. Srilal,

oil is going down to $40 within 2 weeks presumably and the US dollar is getting stronger and folk worldwide have to buy.
Lankan dollar is undervalued to assist the importers and black money transfer but not the women in the middle east or the garment worker women or tea/rubber women who are the real exporters- the worst of crime perpetuated on multitask’s.
Swear in he will but where will the money come from. china got its expertise and money from the chinese, japenese, taiwanese world wide when it got membership to WTO. Both sihala tamil muslim diasporas have it and can negotiate it provided there is a firm security and peace for prosperity than ethnic/religious party cock and bull- all of those beliefs is the way to commission payments instead of individual name well known to FDI investors at Lanka.

anyway you have an accounting mind and an input which she has always fancied. we all cannot be intellects then the world would be a boring square head.

It is the embarrassment that the submarines caused Hindia which made Passa about turn while in Hindia and announce his date of election to ¬The Hindu` first and its think tanks at the south block. All passas and Basils Hindian hands got knotted – war in Hindia is a very serious business.

The subs and the subsequent snub of Modi by Xi at Fiji was enough to make the Hindians fear in their dhoties- like the russian bears the chinese tigers (weretiger like you werelion) never say but take you to a cul du sac and let you have it with a hatchet- just like the indo chino bhai bye of 68. Hindians are very clever back stabbers and the RSS is very special at it- lunatics.

Hindia is the largest importer of ammunition in the world but its hardware is the discarded russian ware. So obviously Modi took refuge with Russia and signed the treaty which Manmohan held on to. This angered the Americans very much because of Ukraine crisis.Obama has recently appointed many a south Indian to high positions and even Microsoft CE is from Andhra- the american trust is dawning towards the south from the buying and selling north.Director Trade US is also Andhra Miss US is also Andhra. they are non political but wont let the chinese belittle hindia.
The only subs Hindia has are the ones that met with mishaps and the chinese strength is in its nuclear subs even against the US.
Today TATA is surviving thanks to Gordon Brown gift of £3 billion and Rover which is now 70% of its income. How times change when companies remain narrow minded _for all hindians only parse blood gets a promotion at TATA (original aryan – means place of residence of iranian as per sanskrit and persian) Present CE of TATA is a civil engg and where will he take them without another Gandhi to change names etc- but socialist brits to sell Opium but it is flawed because the collective chinese learn quick from error.

the very best of professors anywhere in the world are the practicing ones- why did Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg left the most expensive universities like a fountain head written by a russian woman around 100 years ago in the US- the virtue of selfishness, capitalism the new ideal etc.
DJ is still a dead lefty talking liberal like the now famous ¬I am sorry¬ Nick the prick deputy PM.
“You are not disagreeing, You are in-sighting to strip him naked and attack him.”

Do you know even the cool headed Brits would love to see `social engineer` centre of left T bLiar on the streets without his 12 armed SAS. They would kick him like a football and like the riots they are under control.

Political Scientist is a worst parasite than a legal eagle who wins invariably by one word of the latin dictionary.

Politicians speak the truth and sandwich them with lies DJ is just experienced in that art which makes him another emil soundranayagam with the blood of innocent tamils and sihala in both hands just for a place with the European intelligentsia. He got the opportunity at Paris but squandered by thinking English is the only language when there was René Descartes a giant greater than a Shakespeare of tragedies.
“”I do not believe in God; his existence has been disproved by Science. But in the concentration camp, I learned to believe in men.- Jean-Paul Sartre- we never judge the people we love- we love the land we were born and imagine it as the most superior because we were born there- how stupid it can be.

DJ talks of Romance, the Hindian at South Block the RSS and he does not even know the languages but thinks dual in Singlish eg in this article he loves the underdogs (like the anglo saxons) but immediately in that very sentence he is admiring the village jackal Rajapakse who built himself on lefty human rights and tsunami hora.(the 1st million is stolen Bush Sr did it too)

I have got very basic level questions to you

      a) as one who lived on the west not once several time for a diplomatic carrier, you should have been aware of the value of law and order of a country. Why is then you seem to utter not A SINGLE word in terms of lack of law and order under Rajapakshe second term

b)And why you did not talka bout the levels of corruption Rajapakshe cronnies had been doing along the last few years ? if you guys are not abusive minded, why failed to utter a single word about the gravity of abuses being carried out by Rajanoooooooooooooooooo?

RE: The Fall Of Mahinda And ‘The End Of History’

The Fall Of Mahinda And ‘The End Of History’ for the S`hills, whitewashes , cronies and other undesirables, due to people power.

We the people have voted despite great obstacles…

The C omissions may not be as lucrative as 200%, but it is steady job paying 10 to 25^ of the pluck,

Whatever DJ, the masses have given a verdict and if they wants RW and CBK then, it will be.

In recent months, you have become another Pannikiyage Wimalasena a.k.a Wimal Weerawansha in protecting the regime at any cost.

You are just a hypocrite waiting for the plum overseas post from MaRa even after MaRa famously ridicule you in a AlJazeera interview.

You have to wait another 6 long years now.

Who would read this baila? Your predictions ended up akin to those of Royal astrologer ?
People had a clear vision about the defeat of lawless culture introduced by Rajapakshes. It was you who always contributed to his stinky politics. Had you been aware of all these, not you, but a healthy 10 year old would not back the man#s agenda. But you did. That proved your ablities though daring further to utter whatever you think is right. Shame on man.. let us be in peace LET ALONE on this day – we will not go for Kiribath eating but every pfennig will be gotten from the abusers for the wellfare of the victimized nation by the second term of Rajapakshe

This guy is so amazing, now he is a pundit after the event. he is quick to blame Ranil-CBK, the BBS and Gota while maintaining MR was a saint. MR brought all of them around him including the LTTE terrorists, he looted this country or maybe you think he and his sons had toy helicopters and guns and horses. Wake up DJ or become yet another voice in the wilderness.

`President Rajapaksa paid heavily for the sins of his family’.

It is a shame that DJ is still trying to whitewash MR even now after the election result. For DJ it is the family of MR and nor MR himself who is responsible for the present situation.

Why on earth cannot this `intellectual’ understand the simple fact that these relatives were brought into the political and administrative mainstream by MR himself and MR should take responsibility for his actions.

    • 2
      2

Gamarala, please refrain from using the word “intellect” even with inverted commas. It implies some degree of intellect, when there is none. A genuine intellect will see the positive and the negative in MR, and yes there were positives which is why Lasantha called him Mahinda to the very end… but we do not forget the massive corruption, the sell out to the Chinese, the treatment of a genuine war-hero, General Sarath Fonseka etc etc etc… Dayan Silva will soon be consigned to the dustbin of history and may have to go and lecture in some poor country somewhere.

May I ask you a humble request? can you please refrain from publishing any of the articles from this hypocrite please? This is seriously affecting the balance of your esteemed journal as this low life man is trying to play around the masses as the self claimed political scientist have become joke in kissing the back of dictators starting from Premadasa Snr and now Rajapaksas.

    Hey Dayan,

By no stretch of imagination were you ever “an early critic of postwar trends”! You were exactly the opposite!!

You were a major drum-beater for Rajapakse as the best President and pushed for shameless celebrations a year after the conquering of the minorities. In your anxiety for servile faked tribute you vilely asserted that after all it is the majoritarian aspirations that were behind the protest against apartheid! The very first time you ever expressed some, still only tangential, criticism was after Weliveraya – and you did that only in an attempt to gain some self-serving mileage from a tragic event.

You need to stop rewriting your own puerile history.

Yes Dayan, the unipolar situation has ended but the dawn of the multi-polar Sirisena era may lead to chaos with the multiple forces that joined hands to topple Mahinda Rakapakse pulling on different directions. The 7% GDP growth recorded in the past five years may not be repeated for many years to come.

Sirisena’s 100 days programme for change of constitution and return to Westminister type Parliamentary Democracy looks beautiful on paper but in reality it will not get off the grounds.

The biggest losers of the Sirisena victory will be the LTTE Diaspora Tamils. Now that UNP-backed Sirisena has come to power the United States and the West will slowly back-track on the war crimes issue before the UN Human Rights Council to the dismay and disbelief of the LTTE Diaspora Tamils. US has achieved what it wanted in Sri Lanka without an Arab Sping and Sri Lanka will be in the pockets of US and the West. India too will be sidelined by the UNP-Sirisena administration.

Sampanthan & Sumanthiran Co have given hopes to the North East Tamils that a regime change would be good for the Tamils but the Tamils will soon learn that UNP-Sirisena administration with an entrenched JHU will be more tough with the Tamils than the Rajapakse administration. Expectations of the North East Tamils that Army will be withdrawn from North East will not be realized. More and more Sinhala colonizations to break the contiguity of the Tamils inhabited North East will continue unabated.

Other losers will be the ordinary Sri Lankans. In the UNP-Sirisena Administration, UNP will take an upper-hand and under UNP’s neo-liberal policies Sri Lanka will soon see the abolition of free health care and free education. These will be things of the past. Privatization of state institutions will be fast-tracked under a Sirisena-UNP administration enriching the multi-national companies. Sri Lanka will be once again game for the multi-national companies and the West.

      Naga,
Victims do not need UN or the West to punish Gota because now he has lost his impunity and him being a US citizen enable the victims to file a case against him and I have high hopes in the independence of US judiciary. It’s a pity how you have no idea how judicial system works.

Also increasing population of tamil diaspora have become potential game changers in UK, Europe and Canada where elections are won by small margins, so it won’t be sensible for politicians to ignore the vote base.

West got rid of LTTE to bring back stability in a geo-politically important place like SL. They decided to get rid of MaRa because his intimidation and human right violations on Tamils and Muslims along with China was seen as a threat to that stability.

When TNA protests in the streets of N/E after the right to gather and protest is regained by My3 as promised, if UNP or JHU were to distrupt it through violence it will to go down well with the West as that will be seen as a threat to stability as well. Also diaspora was needed at a time when MaRa intimidated and denied Tamils their rights, hope that will not be the case with my3. In that case help from diaspora will not be needed as before.

End of the day the real losers a racist Sinhala chauvinist.

Hi DJ, you mentioned, That Srilanka under MR was “no dictatorship but a unipolar democracy”? Advice prescription for you, would be; see a psychiatrist ASSP, as you are now suffering from the Bipolar Depression, following MR loosing his Presidency and your forced return home by him from the Political appointments he gave you for being Patriotically Bootlicking as ambassador for UN at Geneva and then in France. Enough is enough of you a capitalist living with leftist ideas? You like MR have been fooling many for some time. This tactics has run out, Go back and find your old job as a journalist. You were kidding the elitist readers, now start writing the truth to educate the Sinhala populous.

I thought DJ would remain silent for a while since his last article where he asserted that MR would win this election but failed badly. He is a real phony political scientist. I do not think MS or RW would need his services and he should not have any day dreams about it. He is a opportunist and trying to show he is somewhat a fan of Maithree. He does not understand that the sharp and smart strategy played by Ranil/Chandrika to sponsor Maithree as the candidate of the opposition was a master stroke on their part and further keeping it a well guarded secret until MR announced about the election for presidency and made the MR’s friends and advisers misled about their candidate. Ranil is intelligent and kmowledgeable and not a show off like DJ. Best advise form him to take back seat and relax with his family.

  • 1
    1

Dear Dr.D.J. you are wrong in your calculation.but you are right in some of your argument. that MS win is mainly due to Tamil and Muslim votes.
MR got more than 85% of sinhalese votes.

when I read the comments of most people here, If this is how those who can read and right behave and express opinions? People do you not have any decency? civilty?

Just because Dayan supported Mahinda, is he not a human being? 47% supported Mahinda? Are you planning to send them to gas chambers?

Is this the democratic society you are planning or are you the clarion birds who are starting political witch hunt?

Let everyone talk, Lasantha was killed because people could not tolerate what he wrong, I do not like what he wrote, He had his own agendas, But we should support his right to speech.

Let us build a decent society where people let others live even though they have different opinions, Is it not the reason why you elected Maithree?

Did not anyone teach you right and wrong ? Even in a Daham Pasal?

A story: there was once a man with a very large and well kept moustache. He was very proud if it and kept twirling in all the time. Unfortunately, he stumbled and fell into mud one day. He however stood up with much effort and proclaimed to the sightseers, ” But I have not got mud on my moustache!”

Dayan’s writeup, reminds me of this story which is built into the Tamil proverb, ‘ Villunthaalum Meesayila mun padavillai”.

Dayan, Sri Lanka needs emergency surgery. I has to be now, if we are to survive. We cannot afford another Mahinda Rajapakse leading our nation, using a monstrous constitution and abusing the executive presidency.

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

      Exactly.

That emergency surgery is the 100 day program. Countdown has started.

Never thought emergency surgery would be so exciting.

“”Can’t wait to see those 5 Independent Commissions in action. “”

        Hooo hoo hoo,

ditto copy of the land of associations by former colony.

If ever one needs to kill an idea set up commissions where the secretary keeps the minutes and forgets the hours.

if you push then it gives in with a poof and the execution goes hay wire.

Boris the non anglo saxon was able to not just complete before time than the workaholic Chinese but below envisaged budget. What a success and the envy of the young Chinese for his humor.

However to implement a new idea or radical software in the land of associations where debate takes place it takes a decade.

Remember Thisaranee said Passa is not the major geopolitics player with a part necklace but just a side kick- how true she proved it when the 2 subs entered Indian ocean and 48 hrs later NaMo signs the long delayed defense treaty for another 10 years with Russia- (it pained a new western oriented hard negotiating Hindia) US annoyed because it lost a sure colony partner to Russia. Final China is tamed by Russia but still with a upper hand because of its bilateral deals to the tune of $1 trillion for 30 year gas at current low prices and building of all Russian warehouses market places etc etc for self sufficiency (Russia has $400 billion reserves in foreign exchange)

Lanka gets a second to be like Switzerland with neighbors- attached detached and prosper. the national question all set for equal is a prerequisite.

Below are simple excercises for the follow readers of CT :

    A. Compare and Contrast :
    1. An Astrolger ( eg. Sumanadasa Abeygunawardne ) and a Political Scientist (eg. Dr.Dayan Jayatilleke )

    2. A Politician and a Chemist ( eg. Late Lady Margrat Thatcher, British Prime Minister) and a Political Scientist ( eg Dr.Dayan Jayatilleke ) with particular reference to U TURN.

    B.
    1. What did JVP ‘ s Rohana Wijeyaweera’ s last sentence of his concluding speech from the Dock in a Sri Lanka Court ?

  • 3

The best thing that could have happened to this country is the return of Ranil the only politician who is both honest and intelligent. Unfortunately Dayen doesn’t like him and this attitude vitiates his analysis which sounds intellectual but is really pseudo intellectual. What is his analysis? He quotes many political scientists but what is his conclusion? Is it a victory for liberal democracy? He says it is “the defeat of a certain idea, project, paradigm, way of being and set of values, which may be traced back to the political struggle against the CFA and reaching a high point in the military victory and diplomatic success of the last war” What are these values- are they liberal democratic or totalitarian fascism similar to that of the Nazis?

I am fortified by the fact that a large number of our rural peasantry voted against Mahinda despite his war victory propaganda showing that they do value other things beside the war victory- particularly honest governance and reasonable attitude to the minorities. I was impressed by Buddhist monks of the JHU like Ven Athura Eliya Rathana Thero in the conciliatory attitude he displayed to the Tamil minority. I think at last we may be able to resolve the problems of the minorities with the Sinhala Buddhist majority accepting the values for a plural society. Great credit to our ordinary masses for refusing to listen to the war cry and fear induced propaganda of the great Machiavellian MR and his vicious Fascist brother. The native virtue and good sense of a segment of our peasants( though not all) has ensured the victory of liberal democratic values. The future will depend on compromise and co-operation of the Tamil minority.

My strong opinion is Dayan Jayathilake is very biased and extremely dishonest. He did the same thing In Ada Derana by claiming that just after the election MAhinda Rajapakse would be dragged by his legs (remember ?) to Hague. All full 100% lies and dishonesty.

As Mahinda Rajapakse was the president, when UVA lost in the provincial election, he should have called a Presidential election. Because, he had two years to change the route that he was advancing. Mahinda Rajapakse did not do that. He was very confident about the way he was progressing even though that was not the any group of people in the country except his family, relatives and his henchmen like people, wanted.

Did Mahinda Rajapakse addressed the needs or tried to address the needs of any particular group of people except his family, relatives, and henchmen. The answer is NO.

Otherwise, Dayan Jayathilake very well knows that Mahinda Rajapske must have changed the course when he lost UVA. Instead, he was very stupid and and very confident, he called another presidential election to fool the voters and he did it as much as he can.

Just don’t talk rubbish Dayan Jayathilake.
