The Good, The Bad & Ugly Emerge Post Easter Sunday Massacre

By Sharmini Serasinghe

Sharmini Serasinghe

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly amongst the 225 Members of Parliament came to the fore yet again, on Wednesday 24th, during the Parliamentary debate on imposing a state of emergency in the wake of the Easter Sunday massacre.

While some spoke sense the rest did their best to outdo each other in a unique tragicomedy. For those of us who watched this pathetic performance on television, it was disgusting to see the lows some stooped to, to make maximum political mileage out of the Easter Sunday carnage. Their vitriol, and obvious hypocritical lamentations may have touched the hearts of only the gullible. To put it mildly, their stark lack of dignity and decorum given the tragic reasons for the debate left a bitter taste in our mouths.

At a time when an entire nation is still reeling in shock, sorrow, despair and fear, the last thing we needed to see was such a crude and ugly drama. This was a stark reminder of the quality of people – asinine, immature and irresponsible – we have elected to represent us and how politically bankrupt we are.

To say that politicians on both sides of the divide – the Government and the Opposition – have ‘screwed up big time’ is a justifiable summation.

To begin with, the Head of State of this country – Maithripala Sirisena – who is also the Minister of Defense and National Security, took off on a private overseas sojourn leaving the likes of Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando in charge of overseeing Defense and National Security related matters in the country.

This is the man – Hemasiri Fernando – who had prior knowledge of the Easter Sunday attacks. He along with several amongst the Police hierarchy and heaven knows how many others, had been alerted by the State Intelligence Service (SIS) of a probable attack being carried out targeting Christian and Catholic Churches. He is now on record for telling a foreign journalist “To how many Churches could we give protection? It was quite impossible to protect a large number of Churches last Sunday despite receiving prior information on these attacks”. The stark lack of remorse and downright arrogance with which he made this inhumane statement was shocking and disgusting to say the least.

Moderate Buddhists like myself demand to know from Mr. Fernando, if his response would have been the same had Buddhist temples been targeted on a full moon (Poya) day, instead. I don’t think so!

Are Christians and Catholics not our fellow humans, Mr. Hemasiri Fernando?

Against this tragic backdrop we now have a President and a Prime Minister who claim they were “not told/did not know” of a probable attack targeting Christian and Catholic Churches on Easter Sunday. What message does this convey to the people of this country of their ability to look after our interests and ensure our safety?

It is only now, Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe tells us that he, despite being the most senior member, next to the President, of the National Security Council (NSC) – the executive body charged with the maintenance of national security – was kept out of NSC meetings along with the State Minster of Defense Ruwan Wijewardene, following the failed Constitutional coup in October last year. Why did the Prime Minster fail to raise this issue publicly, before? Had he the will/backbone/spunk, would he not have insisted on or even forced himself into those meetings? After all, he had every right to do so!

It now transpires that post October 2018, it were some members of the Opposition and not the Government who sat in on National Security Council meetings. This makes the Opposition too, responsible, for the Easter Sunday carnage. They too cannot claim “we did not know”!

Further, it is now reported quoting a member of the Badriya mosque in Katankudy that they had informed the authorities in power, way back in 2012, of the extremist activities of the radicalized suspected mastermind of the Easter Sunday massacre, Zahran Hashim. Members of the mosque had even provided dockets containing detailed and vital information about Zahran Hashim to eleven authorities including the then Secretary of Defense, the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General. However, a trustee of the mosque claims, “They all fell on deaf ears”.

The hard and unpalatable truth for some is, the battle of egos between the two leaders of this country – the President and Prime Minster – and the Opposition failing to act in 2012 when they were the government in power to nip this extremist scourge in the bud, cost the lives of 253 innocent civilians, injured over 500 and has left a nation in shock, despair and utter disgust. Hence no one has the right to point a finger at the other at this juncture because all are equally culpable.

While it may not have been possible to entirely prevent the dastardly terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday, the destruction to life and property could definitely have been minimized had those who were privy to information disclosed by the State Intelligence Service had acted responsibly. And others who obviously knew but publicly claim they did not know, will have to deal with their conscience, eventually.

At this point I recall an article I wrote one year ago (March 2018), titled Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. What I stated then, still holds true.

I repeat, “Proactive – control a calamitous situation rather than just responding to it after it has happened – is not a quality our laid-back politicians and bureaucrats are familiar with. No matter which political hue they belong to, proactive they are not!

Instead, they remain inactive until the situation goes beyond control and only then do they react. Usually, too late!

Once all hell breaks loose the blame game and finger pointing starts. It’s never the responsibility of those who are rightfully responsible but the blame is laid at the doorstep of every other Tom, Dick and Harry.

Now, the country is returned to a state of emergency, a blow to the economy with foreign governments issuing travel advisories against Sri Lanka, followed by the blanket social-media blackout leaving those dependent on it for their daily bread wondering what hit them and for no fault of their own.

An entire country is now being made to pay the price for political and bureaucratic apathy!”

Alas, nothing much has changed since I penned those word, one year ago – déjà vu!

Oh my my. Looks whose here.

This woman was so worried about Gnanassara thero that to someone who have not listened to the Thero’s speeches would have thought the Thero was worse than Hitler. That’s how this woman portrayed the venerable thero.

Now 5 days after a mass bombing that is second to only the 9/11 attacks in the US, this woman comes here to give her 2 cents.

    What a farce.

Gnanasara is worse than Hitler no doubt about. We would have seen that had he the power

        Dilshan,

Does Ganasara follow Sinhala “Buddhism”, which is diagonally opposed to pristine Buddhism.

Your Gnanasara was hammering all the Muslims then. Thereafter he praises some Muslims and is blaming the Wahhabies now trying to win sympathy.

      Reggie oh Reggie,
Were you by any chance the little boy that was dumped at Gandasara Sadhu’s temple a few years ago? I am sure he treated you with such compassion, even unto giving you free enemas and colonic irrigation ( which is so frightfully expensive at Durdans) . But is that any reason to call him “venerable”? If you meant Venereal, please forgive me.

      Rtd. Lt. Reginald Shamal Perera,

Your “venerable thero” single handedly brought disgrace upon our entire Buddha sasana by behaving and speaking far worse than a common street thug. He harassed all Muslims and Christians as well. In many ways he’s the Sinhala-Buddhist version of Zahran Hashim.

Had he conducted himself decently and with integrity, perhaps people may have taken him more seriously.

        Sharmini,

I am assuming you have many speeches from the Thero and know quite well the warnings he made about Islamic terrorism.

You say he has harassed Christians. Show me one instance where he has harassed Christians. I am a Christian by Birth although I do not follow any religion now.

His harassment of Muslims (if you consider it that way) was to highlight the nefarious activities of Muslims from Kuragala to Wilpattu to bringing drugs to the country. Attempting to highlight those activities he stood in between and certainly caused them harassment. I agree.

But you have to keep in mind that harassment is a relative term. After the bombings many business now in SL do not allow anyone wearing a Burqa to enter their premises. This is also harassment. When the Army after the bombings now raids Muslim homes and Muslims neighborhoods that is also harassment.

So, from Gnanassara thero’s protests to the Burqa ban to the recent raids that is all harassment against Muslims.
But who sow the seeds that brought this harassment, it is the Muslims themselves.

It is unfortunate you don’t see it that way.

Sri Lanka is a failed state and a Banana republic and lawless state.

See how Tissa A. who was the GenSec of the largest Party of the country and a former cabinet minister did create a doctors document just before the prez elections which is affecting national security and the outcome of the election.
This week bugger was freed from the courts once after he apologized and claimed it was a fake document.

so every terrorist in the country now can accept the fault and apologize.

Mind you this fake documnets was against the 1st and 2nd citizens of the country and the defense lawyer for Tissa was none other than the current president of the BASL.

I am a Veteran of the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka and you better keep that in mind. If I was still in the Army when this incident happened then I would have taken extra ordinary measures to counter the enemy.

The minister of defence should always be a bold, smart and fearless and always-alert personality, which is totally contradictory with the current spinless joker.

The ‘I wasn’t informed’ quote states that the President, PM and the opposition leader MR has failed in their duties of being coorporative and attentive. Especially the Prez and PM have to go home, without being a joke to the world anymore as they are purely responsible for the Easter Sunday bombings, as being negligible.

Defense secretary Ponnasiri should be arrested as per Mr. Wijedasa Rajapakse’s letter to the Prez.

I would like to express the gratitude to other ethnic groups and religions who stood by the catholic community in this most disastrous moment, when the
vote-greedy goverment didn’t even care the least.

Finally, I would never ever vote again for a mainstream political party in SL as I have been fooled enough. Please use the common sense in future. We are not born to suffer.

    Thanks!

Problem with our politicians is that they appoint their “Cronies” who have not got appropriate experience and qualifications to important government positions.

It is laughable to appoint a former President of the National Olympic Committee as the country’s Defence Secretary.

It is also unthinkable to hear that without inviting the PM, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister for Law and Order for the Security Council meetings, the President and the Defence Secretary have conducted the Security Council meetings with some opposition SLFP MPs who were rejected by the people in the last general election.

It is also unthinkable to learn that the PM and the Deputy Minister of Defence were silent about this unethical and illegal procedure which allowed the terrorists to penetrate through country’s security system.

It is good that the Prime Minister was not informed about the possible attack. Even if he was informed he would not have take any action. What is the positive action he took against the Murderers and the Bribe kings in the previous regime? despite his promises prior to the elections. At least now he can claim that ‘he was not informed’ by wearing this ‘Abhaya’.
Oh ! god, please forgive all the politicians- they know not what they do. They don’t See/Hear any evil before they come.

“To say that politicians on both sides of the divide – the Government and the Opposition – have ‘screwed up big time’ is a justifiable summation.” – Sharmini Serasinghe who is boasting and pretending as sinhalese budhist to redicule sinhalese, Budhists and all sri lankan culture with her venom towards anything sri lankan. She is Promoting ‘UNUTH EKAI, MUNUTH EKAI’ fraud to protect her boss. Rani-L.
With simplistic mind and hatred towards sinhalese budhists, she talks without clothes …
Everybody knows now the reason for the carnage is due to dismantle of all security intelligence by Rani-L , Managala, Kirialles, Rajithas, Pacha Champikas and all powerful UNP’ers putting majority of intelligence officers into jail.
“The present-day rulers have a history of compromising national security for political reasons. It may be recalled that, in January 2002, the then UNP-led UNF government, while honeymooning with the Tigers, got the head of the Police Kennel Division, of all people, to raid an army long rangers’ safe house at Millennium City, Athurugiriya. This, it did even though the army had confirmed that the place was used by its personnel and their operations were legal. The government claimed that there was a plot to assassinate the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Intelligence officers who had operated from there were bundled into trucks, in full view of the media, and taken to police stations, where they were ridiculed and harassed; their identities were exposed. They had carried out a series of successful small group operations against the LTTE, in Prabhakaran’s stronghold. They killed Shankar, who was the LTTE leader’s right hand man. Beaten at their own game, the LTTE leaders confined themselves to underground bunkers and opted for a truce immediately after the change of government in 2001. The Norwegian-crafted ceasefire agreement (2002) specifically called for abandoning deep penetration operations which the LTTE feared.

Sarath Fonseka slammed the Government. I watched his speech on AdaDerana.

    Nice article Ms. Serasinghe.

These attacks by Islamic terrorists on behalf of ISIS or so claimed, must be condemned unequivocally. These are terrible attacks against humanity and all Sri Lankans of all faiths. No one should make excuses and try to drag in non-relevant arguments and facts.

Sri Lanka did not invade the Middle-East. No Catholics and Muslims in Sri Lanka have had conflicts. People have co-existed for a long time. It sickens me to see people unable to call it a Jihadi terrorist attack by extremist terrorist who have a twisted interpretation of a global religion.

Yes clearly it targeted Christians on Easter; but was an attack on ALL Faiths and ALL people in Sri Lanka in a sense because Muslims. Buddhists, Hindus and Christians were victims in the Three hotel attacks too. Sri Lanka should not allow people to be demonized for external or internal forces with vested interests. But it should not be a politically correct appeaser to soft peddle the ISIS terrorist actions. It is sickening to see people unable to accept the truth and trying to rationalize their hate.

Remember ISIS has raped and murdered thousands in Syria and Iraq for their ideology. Why should they spread their hate in Sri Lanka? It is because it was a soft target. No more checkpoints, very degraded national security and intelligence services. They even hate fellow Muslims who are Shia or Sufi. They hate the Yazidi. They are demented people who have been brainwashed.

Please I hope that this action was a one-time incident and all terrorists associated with these acts are arrested and brought to justice and maximum penalties meted out without political interference.

When tragedy strikes he is early to beat the rest to the key board. His cue will be followed by the ilk of chambers, sumane, champa, eagle eye……etc…….etc.Almost 400 are dead,50 or so children,50 foreigners who,s mistake is to believe our government that country is safe to visit and the rest are

Here is part of a news report on this Pig murderer .Please stop political correctness and call it for what it is. Muslim deviated terrorist shits. They need to be erased. They killed over 100 Tamils too in Batti.

The complaint includes preachings by Zahran to the effect that Islam should be the only religion in the island, and that Muslims should not pledge allegiance to the country..

” We gave this to the authorities in black and white. We told them that these guys were preaching some crazy radicalised fundamentalism and that there is a threat to our lives. We did this from as far back as 2012″ Jaseem told the Daily Mirror.

According to those at the National Thawheed Jamath mosque, Zahran had single handedly originated a new denomination and built a mosque through donations given by those attending “Jumma prayers” an account rubbished by Ameer.

“They opened a new mosque because they got funds from foreign entities. They couldn’t be with the other fundamentalists because the money wasn’t coming in,” Jaseem told us

Sharmini, You must not put one community against another like you do in your writings. Hemasiri Fernando failed to take action not because he didn’t care about the Catholics – his wife is a staunch Catholic. The reason for inaction was most probably that he was too lazy or he didn’t want to get gangs of so-called human rights defenders behind him if he started checking the Muslims. It could also be that he didn’t take it seriously at all. Its a bit unbelievable that ISIS should attack Srilanka and the reason ISIS has given for attacking Srilanka namely the New Zealand mosque attack goes to prove how unbelievable and even idiotic everything about this attack is.
Just to make my point clear about how connected Hemasiri is to the Christians – Its a grandfather of Hemasiri’s wife a couple of generations back who had built and donated the St. Mary’s church in Lorries Rd, Bamabalapitiya together with the surrounding land where the school stands today. They (the wife and extended family) are supposedly very active in this church. So your allegation that Hemasiri would have acted differently if it was Buddhist temples that were under threat is unfounded. The reason for inaction is simply that he is another useless politician. Hemasiri should resign other positions he has too. He and others responsible must be charged with criminal negligence and maybe involuntary man slaughter. One advice to you – you must concentrate on not allowing this kind of people to get away with negligence of this sort and not waste your energy and ours on trying to give this tragic incident a twist of ethnic or religious divide. We all have to move away from these divides now and stand together otherwise we will be totally lost.

I forgot to stress why protecting catholic churches might be of personal importance for Hemasiri. I hope anyone reading my comment will see that the threat being against the Catholic church(es) and not against Buddhist temples is not the reason why Hemasiri failed to take action. As said its a simple matter of laziness or negligence and not being competent enough to evaluate the danger. So please do not try to put the Catholics and Buddhists against each other by these spurious speculations and attempts to pit religious groups against each other. Show some responsibility in any kind of journalism these different so-called journalists are engaged in.

Yet you want us to believe the war was won by the same lazy, incompetent, …. Sri Lankan security forces. Remember they did not have to detect anything, everything was given to them on platter.

It appears this island might have to consider subcontracting its security to the Hindians.

The Fuming Democracy ” lady ” is back, and trying to somehow weave in the Opposition to share the blame too. And .. she needed to add this too..- “if it was a threat on a Buddhist temple, the response would have been different”

Ms. Serasinghe, you are a racist. It shows, though you try to pretend otherwise. Liberalism really is a disease, and it shows with you lot. So racist that even YOU don’t realise it

Well, lets summarize, you lot didn’t get your Lamborginis, your golden horses, your Dubai hotel, your $ 18Bn in foreign accounts..BUT you did deliver to us a country of the biggest bank robbers in history and more importantly a country full of terror. Our forces hard earned peace has been lost due to scum like you

For all those pitiful excuses to keep them in power ” oh but we have no white vans now.. we feel so much safer…”.. well…. we have bomb laden lorries and fanatical terrorist and security checks everywhere! We saw this coming , even if the 6.2 mn idiots who voted for these jokers did not. It was all about votes for the UNP, even at the cost of the security of the citizens of this country. Turning a blind eye to intelligence reports because otherwise they loose their precious votes!!

Ranil Wickremasinghe the man with his visionary brain according to you lot, is obviously sitting on it. Please do go to Viharamaha Devi park and ask “your SERVANT” Ranil to resign too. And yes, Sira too, we have no need for BOTH of them

On a different note, where the hell is SHYAMON JAYASINGHE- the other sorry excuse of a human being? In Australia or in Kattankudy???? We are waiting for him to pen his next fairy tale to Colombo Telegraph

SHYAMON JAYASINGHE must have had a premonition that you are around.

      words,

Only the gullible will fall for statements that contain phrases like “if it was a threat…” and “would have been different”.

No one else would give a tinker’s dime about Kussi Amma Sera’s IF, ELSE and WOULD HAVE statements.

Sorry, but I’m still looking for the “tinker’s dime.” Would you, given your self-allocated erudition, tell us who or what this is?
Or is this yet another instance of displaying stupidity in an effort to project erudition?

There is only one question which keeps haunting me. If our security can achieve this much within days (not even a week ) how much could they have achieved in a month in preventing this. Why there is no conspiracy theories raised with so much breakthrough in such short time. Sadly the common man is well aware of the usual outcome. MS will stat where he is, government will continue with business as usual, men who are sacrificed now will later be rewarded with diplomat or administrative positions, the public will conveniently forget this whole tragedy before elections and scums of Weerawansa ilk (plenty here in CT) will continue to exploit one human tragedy for another. We are truly F – – – – D.Now for those who come up with excuses, I will like to remind these shit heads did not take any pain to hide their identity. If at all they wanted the whole world to know. They gave their names, addresses, booked rooms and appeared all over CCTV.

Sharmini, as a dignified journalist though you raised the issue decided not to address fully . The question is if this threat was given before the new years day targeting worship places of Buddhists and Tamils, what could have been the reaction of our government. If the answer is different from what took place on Easter Day then it is also clear that some (if not all) of our crooked politicians not only willfully neglect but by not disclosing deceived others from taking necessary steps in preventing. Claiming ignorance is the only defence they are left with, which usually do not invite international scrutiny. So all in all with the experience of knowing our politicians for years it is crystal clear, ISIS planned the attack with our politicians exploiting the timing (before elections) to enable for their self gain. Who are these terrorist???? ISIS or our politicians .

Why no one is claiming any conspiracy theories with these quick breakthroughs. Sadly we already know the outcome .MS will continue , the government will continue, men who are sacrificed (scapegoat) will be later rewarded with diplomatic or other administrative posts, public as usual will conveniently forget this before elections and scums like Wimal and his ilk (some here in CT) will continue exploiting one tragedy for another.

Well written article by Sharmini as usual. By reading some of the comments, I feel how dumb the people are. They cannot separate the wood from the trees. I presume the Defense secretary was a Banker by profession. How on earth a Banker could be a defense secretary puzzles me. Maybe only in Sri Lanka where fools rule the roost. If he was worried about the Human rights activist chasing him for doing his job, he should have been counting money sitting in a Bank. Jokers all around!!.
when all these people received the Alert from Indian Intelligence, they would have been preparing for the New Year looking for Auspicious times and Nakath etc. Terrorist Attacks!! what nonsense. Nothing to worry!!. So they went their merry way stuffing themselves with Kavun, Kokis and other drink. With these churning inside, the brain do not function. They were totally glaced to think about Terrorists. Unless they give SF the job. Nothing will happen. Good Luck

SHAMINI SERASINGHE : You aee anti-Sinhal buddhists. I know your affiliations with the ISlam too, I mean NGO work, that is after the the Peace secretariate I can not write long er pieces of comments because of CT’s comment policy.
Join everything this way. NGOs, wanted Executive president abolished, Terrorism act abolished, buddhist bhikkus and BBS mouth shut. Educated muslims were sent overseas to be trained in ISIS. the whole world knows and Some western media talks ISIS is HIRED sildiersand their Vedios are orchestrated events under movie studio conditions, Maithripala sirisena Tried to buy Remote sensing equipment for surveillenace around the seas from an ISREal NUMBER COMPANY. iT IS NOT A ESTABLISHED COMPANY. sO, THE TRAIL IS HIDDEN ?. Ranil is a foreign agent. bond scam was not his first. HE tried it with LTTE too. Now, Mangala Wants National security legislatiionchanged. There is a National security analysis INGO, A Sinhala – sri lankan just like you. MS tried to buy ships police the Indian OCean. So, bomb attacks were needed to justify all th these. These homicide bombers are wealthy people who had Strong political connections. So that, they won’t be stopped by law enforcement. They ambushed the financial system with the bond scam. Mangala Issues TReasury bills every months with the Free media policy of Sri lanka, nothing is allowed to publish. Because, it is the Carrot and Stick policy. those who obey get Movie camaras, Lap tops and money from Mangala Samraweera’s Media Ministry which is transferred to a Drug Addict I suppose, so he might help in the drug business too. I heard christians, not catholics, also had or has plans to Spend what muslim did.that is why the govt is so careful.

So,the Politicians and Officials may have lackadaisical in acting on this so called MU”SLIM extremist activities. On the other hand,West may have tried to sell Equipment to over come this FIGHTING TERROR IN THE WORLD STAGE. Behind the FIGHTING TERROIR THEY BOUGHT EQUIPMENT FOR THE PORT. TOO.

West crying out loud for buy our stuff against Islamic Terrorism is not new news. ISIS and AL Qaeda were created by the west is not news. Srilanka had Wahabi Extemism against SUFIs is for Decades and that isnot news. Even the DARGA town violence was among Two groups of Muslims Wahabi attacking Sufis. Later they attacked a bhikku and the Procession middle of the town against it. THE PROBLEM IS RANIL TRYING TO TAKE DEFENCE MINISTRY UNDER HIM. Even earlier had requested such action. Now, Mangala Wants to change the laws. So, foreign troops can land any time. R2P is not needed to build a camp in Srilanka.
Now, Ranil is screaming. but SL Army says within a week they can handle it. Police was allowed to handle it. Army was not informed.

Sharmini Serasinghe! Please find the correct answers for these questions.

Why the Tamil and Tamil origin Christians were only targeted?

Why not a single Sinhalese Catholic Church was targeted?

Why not a single Buddhist temple or Sinhala and Government institution was targeted?

From photos of the damages and CCTV photos of the terrorists, we could come to the conclusion that the terrorists have used RDX plastic explosives!

How and from what country or organisation the terrorists were able to get this explosive in large quantities?

    Leave all these.

How not a single Catholic or Christian Sinhalese politician went to church and got injured or killed?

Was it because the Tamil Christians were to be targeted, the Prez. and the Government kept silent about the warning?

Why the media speak about the “Killing of the Christians” and not about the mass killing of the Tamils and people of Tamil origin?

The objectives of these killing could be:

    1) Giving some sort of warning to the Tamil Christians who support the Present Government, a puppet of US, India and the West!

    2) To prevent the country from coming out of the economic crises;

    3) To prevent the present Government coming to power again;

    4) To strengthen the powers of the armed forces;

    5) To get released all the Intelligence officials now in remand for war crimes;

    6) To make the Muslims politically inactive and passive;.

    7) Some sort of strong warning to the US, India and the West.

Now, who could have been behind the attack?

Shamini Serasinghe, Devout buddhist is crying out loud saying why buddhists were not attacked. both Sufis and buddhists had been targatted for decades. Only thing MEdia which have lot of freedom now do not report those. KAtaragama, Mahiyangana, Aluthgama, Dambulla, Digana are all places where buddhists were attacked. Only in digana they burned down the MAKESHIFT mosques. some times, Muslim women ” Please do not attack us, that is the mosque showing the makeshift Wahabi mosque, and they are the culprits.
Anyway, Wahabis know how to prey five times a day and to eat every time and to roll the child making machines 24/7.
Bond Scammer boss is trying to fish in that Troubled water and become the president. But, Ranil also knows that he doe snot have a winning STREAK.

This woman is a total joke. Now comes out to criticize but this is the government she and her ilk asked for. After 30 years of destruction, even a clown should have known what a tinder box Sri Lanka can potentially be. But these liberals want to have the cake and eat it too. Shame on you woman. don’t call your self a Buddhist after all the insults you hurl on the religion. I have learned one thing that works in Sri Lanka and generally in Asia. That is tough honest leadership. That is what we had before this debacle of a government came to power. Unfortunately, Sri Lankans are fools who don’t know and value a good thing when they see it. so now we are paying the price for it.

Sharmini, Pretty clear analysis of the events that led to this man made tragedy that has brought the country to its knees. In the President we have an idiot who does not understand the constitution, has’nt a clue about national security, a master at the blame game when he regularly screws things up, abusing tax payer monies globe trotting around the world, more interested in securing his position at the next election where he is going to be kicked out, a character completely devoid of decency and respectability, a vindictive, ignorant , deplorable scoundrel who does not have the welfare of the people at heart and a slimeball who the people of this country now regret voting for. He must be impeached and charged with manslaughter for not taking any action to prevent this tragedy. RW must resign as he is equally guilty of dereliction of responsibility to the people of this country. It is appalling that no meetings were held of the security council since last October and this serious breach of the constitution was not brought to the attention of the citizens of this country by the PM. Any idiot with an ounce of common sense would have raised this issue in parliament or publicised this serious breach of the constitution to put matters right. RW has proved to be a weak, spineless, manipulative, visionless and ineffective leader who is not fit to be the PM of the country. A born loser who thinks that his western attire and basic English speaking skills makes him a superior intellectual that qualifies him to lead the party and the country is completely erroneous. You would have thought that RW who has been in parliament for so many years would have shown leadership in exposing the game being played by Sirisena
