The Land Of The Cowards And The Home Of The Opportunists

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“….for what may seem

Terrible or bizarre, when once our eyes

Have had time to acclimatise,

Becomes quite commonplace.” –La Fontaine (Selected Fables)

For 12 years the semiotics of Nazi Germany shaped Victor Klemperer’s existence. As a German Jew, he witnessed how the Nazis turned the language of Goethe, Schiller and Heine into a tool; and experienced, at first hand, the diabolical results of the consequent transformation of German society and the German mind.

The Nazis would take a familiar word, give it a new meaning by implication, and use it intensely and extensively until it sank deep into the public mind and caused noxious changes in the public consciousness: “If someone replaces the words ‘heroic’ and ‘virtuous’ with ‘fanatical’ for long enough, he will come to believe that a fanatic really is a virtuous hero, and that no one can be a hero without fanaticism. The Third Reich did not invent the words ‘fanatic’ and ‘fanaticism’; it just changed their value….[i]

An analogous process is at work in Rajapaksa Sri Lanka. It was evident in renaming the Fourth Eelam War a ‘Humanitarian Operation (with Zero Civilian Casualties), the giant internment camps ‘WelfareVillages’ and the Witch Trial of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake an impeachment. It is evident in the deliberate fanning of the flames of ethno-religious racism, in the whipping up of ant-devolution hysteria, in the transformation of Gen. Fonseka from Patriotic Hero to Arch Traitor.

The latest manifestation of this toxic process of psychological and moral transformation is the case of Dayasiri Jayasekara.

The defection of Dayasiri Jayasekara was an act of pure unadulterated opportunism. In making his jump, Mr. Jayasekara, until very recently a voluble critic of Rajapaksa Rule, was motivated by nothing more than naked self-interest. Like those other UNPers who took the same path, he did what he did because he wanted to be more than a leader in the opposition, because he wanted the illusion and the trappings of power

Opportunism is common to all politics. The problem is when it is transformed from a negative to a positive value, and depicted as an honourable act.

That Ranil Wickremesinghe is a gargantuan disaster as the leader of the UNP and of the Opposition is indubitable. But that proven fact does not in any way justify the defection of Dayasiri Jayasekara (or any other UNPer). Leaving the UNP in disgust and despair can be comprehended. But joining the government, he himself excoriated as family-centric, repressive and corrupt, cannot be justified.

Unless words such as opportunism, self-interest and betrayal are invested with their antithetical meanings.

Defection from opposition to the Rajapaksas is not just an act of political betrayal; it is also an act of self-betrayal. And when such behaviour is hailed as unavoidable or inevitable, let alone wise, good or patriotic, we unwittingly collude with the Rajapaksas in creating a new moral-ethical commonsense which sanctifies not just violent repression and corruption but also opportunism, cowardliness, self-debasement and shamelessness.

(Incidentally, if Ranil Wickremesinghe becomes the President tomorrow, every single UNP defector will return to the UNP, singing hosannas to President Wickremesinghe).

Recently, the Daily Mirror carried a picture of President Rajapaksa and Duminda Silva at a public function; the Monitoring MP of the Defence Ministry is worshipping the Minister of Defence, on bended knees with his hands on his head[ii].

Worshipfully obeying the Rajapaksa Siblings is the First Precept of the Rajapaksa Reich.

From Dayasiri Jayasekara to Duminda Silva, from GL Peiris to Keheliya Rambukwella, the message is simple: if you want to get ahead in politics, observe the First Precept and become a Rajapaksa-worshipper. Abandoning your party, letting down your voters, betraying your principles and shaming yourself are not political and social solecisms but smart career-moves.

In the Rajapaksa Reich, opportunism is wisdom, shamelessness honour and cowardice patriotism; a good man is a man bereft of decency and self-respect, a man who can consume his own words of just yesterday with relish, as if they are manna from heaven.

Politics in the Rajapaksa Reich

The Rajapaksas have a contradictory relationship with the military and the SLFP. Their power-project cannot succeed without these two entities. But their very dependence on the military and the SLFP renders them vulnerable to military coup and inner-party rebellion. The solution to these incipient dangers is to remake the military and the SLFP in the Rajapaksa image, to deprive them of their relative autonomy and to turn them into witless and servile instruments of Rajapaksa power.

In the necessary task of transforming the party of the Bandaranaikes into the party of Rajapaksas, defections have an important role to play. The newcomers do not have a base in the SLFP; therefore they do not have the limited authority/autonomy of a Maitripala Sirisena or a Nimal Siripala de Silva. They are totally dependent on the Rajapaksas for everything. As complete supplicants they will have no choice but to accept every Rajapaksa depredation, support every Rajapaksa crime and defend every Rajapaksa excess. They represent the SLFP that is being born, a Rajapaksa party with a Rajapaksa agenda.

It is no accident that UNP-defector Keheliya Rambukwella is the Government Spokesman.

The UPFA voter base is eroding – and the Rajapaksa magic is waning – as the results of the last round of PC polls demonstrated. Between the Local Government elections of 2011 and PC poll of 2012, the UPFA’s tally decreased by 58,908 votes in the North-CentralProvinceand 60,454 votes in theSabaragamuwaProvince. Even if the decrease in Sabaragamua can be explained partially by the CWC’s decision to contest separately, a similar mitigating factor was not operative in the very Sinhala-Buddhist Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, where the UPFA vote decreased by about 15% in just one year.

This was before the electricity hike!

If the erosion of the UPFA base continues at the current pace, in a few years marginally free and fair elections will become as impossible in the South as they are in the North. The only way out is to weaken and demoralise the opposition parties so that they perform even worse than the UPFA, enabling the regime to win by default.

Despite the disastrous leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe and the equally debilitating antics of Sajith Premadasa, the UNP actually did better at the last round of PC polls than was anticipated. It gained 50,670 votes in North-Central and lost only 9,090 votes in Sabaragamuwa.

Thus the timing of the Jayasekara-defection.  Mr. Jayasekara wants a portfolio; the Rajapaksas want to demoralise the UNP and push ordinary UNPers into ever grater despair with high-profile defections. The Rajapaksas do not expect droves of ordinary UNPers to follow Mr. Jayasekara into the UPFA. The gain they expect from this defection is the demoralising of ordinary UNP activists and voters. If enough UNPers stay away from the polling booth in despair, the UPFA can ‘win’ big, despite its eroding support base.

Semiotic-shenanigans, media-suppression, Leadership Training and engineering defections all aim at creating aSri Lankainured to Rajapaksa Rule. An indifferent country, consisting of a rabid minority of Rajapaksa-supporters and an apathetic majority, which try to survive by emulating the Ostrich.

Though Rajapakse voter base is eroding, MR have a clear plan to gain it back.

The creation of BBS, Ravana sena is to divert the economic issues and get more sinhala buddhist votes from UNP to UPFA. (Like BJP in India did sometimes back). In next election MR would get BBS to contest election as an ally of UPFA.

Getting anti-13A, anti-India, anti-west patriotism pumped up. (similar to Hugo Chavez did)

MR have a master plan to rule for next few decades. He got 18A approved fooling all the ministers and people.

Great Stuff Thisaranee, and hats off to you – please keep it coming.

Dayasiri is indeed an opportunist and nothing more and its better we know now – but Ranil is a bloody disaster.

Hence, the only solution is for an older and one hopes wiser CBK to return as joint opposition candidate with the help of Sarath Fonseka, reclaim her place in the SLFP and try to rescue the party and the country from the Rajapassa military dictatorship…

        Yes,Ranil is a disaster.Dayasiri is a disloyal and
selfish attorney rather than a worthwhile politico.
Let’s wait and see how our”intelligent” voters going
to react about power greedy and not principle greedy
patriots. But the likes of CBK won’t help in anyway.
MR has put his party ready for many decades with
many, possible leaders next in line, though some of
them are from his own blood. He has managed to put the
whole country in complete darkness about a possible
leadership from a different camp.Ranil is totally out
from people’s mind as a match. And UNP is without a next
in line leader, another great achievement for the party
that had three outstanding candidates for the job under
JRJ.MR is fully exploiting the situation in the UNP
to his advantage and Ranil and the rebels all behave
        collectively, neglecting disastrous consequences.
MR works as the leader of both the SLFP and UNP.

@dodo: Even a shipload of good politicians are not going to do squat until the voters are ready to recognize the need of the hour and vote accordingly.

Isn’t it time everyone stopped betting on this, like it is a horse race, and start making the voters aware what the need of the hour is?

Today politicians from ALL parties are the biggest law breakers and criminals in the country. Political parties have no democracy and political culture is morally and ethically bankrupt.

In the context it is important for citizen’s to PROACTIVELY control politicians and not the other way round. Hence, civil society groups and Citizen’s organizations should draft a code of conduct and ethics for politicians and for start a MASSIVE VOTER EDUCATION CAMPAIGN so that the public will start holding corrupt politicians and POLITICAL PARITIES – particularly leaders, accountable.
A citizens campaign to educate voters based on CODE OF ETHICS AND CONDUCT FOR POLITICIANS AND POLITICAL PARTIES is the need of the hour.

@Don Stanley: I like your constructive suggestions. I wish more people come out and suggest WHAT CAN BE DONE, instead of keep pointing out what is wrong. WE ALL KNOW WHAT IS WRONG!!!

Massive Voter Education Campaign is exactly what the country needs. But what are you going to do about monks like the one who disrupted such a voter awareness program on the LLRC report in the East? I suspect it will take another violent episode to make the monks run back into the temples. Or, are the Buddhists knowledgeable enough about their religion to let the monks know what their role is in society?

For over 2000 years monks kept the ability to read and write to themselves. So we have only their version of the history of Sri Lanka. Even the kings had to send their sons to learn from the monks. At that time people had to relay on monks to understand Buddha’s teachings. But thanks to the British education system everyone can read now. Isn’t it time you read the Thripitakaya yourself and learnt what Buddhism is all about? Or, do you still need spoon feeding?

Sri Lanka’s politicians with a few exceptions are the PITS. Politicians stink – are unethical, unprincipled, criminal and unfit to lead. Democracy has become a circus in the country. Recently Jeevna Kumaratunge was attacked by protesting carpenters.

Before people take the law into their hands and start attacking criminal politicians – particularly the corrupt and criminal Rajapassa brothers – there needs to be citizen’s action to save democracy in Sri Lanka.

It is no secret that Tisaranee was playing an important role with Dayan Jayathilake during the time of Premadasa, running the Fourth Estate. They were all Premadasa/Sirisena Cooray supporters. When Ranil took over the reins of the UNP and secured power in 2002, they expected RW to call them back once again to their former posts. Sirisena Cooray too were working himself back to the UNP. RW knew what exactly their agenda was and shut the door for Sirisena Cooray as he was responsible for quite a number of high profile murders during that period. Both Tisaranee and Dayan being close to Sirisena Cooray had to pay the price they deserved and RW did not entertain them either. Both Dayan and Tisaranee still harbours that grudge against RW. Here is an instance where Tisaranee admits that the UNP at the last PC polls have increased the voter base but she does not want to give credit to RW. Tisaranee is a good writer and has exposed MR quite well in her articles right along. If only she becomes selfless and stop attacking RW when RW has cleansed the UNP of almost 90% thanks to MR, will easily pave the way when the inevitable strikes MR for RW to come back. I believe Tisaranee, in the larger interest of the country should seriously consider this and drop her hatred towards RW, as otherwise it is like cutting her nose to spite her face.

I guess to make enemies of this kind (Dayan & Tisarani)Ranil must have made some hard decisions. Being an intelligent man he would have know the repercussions of “shutting the door” to these people.

People (certainly in the case of Dayan) who would do anything and say anything to jump on a bandwagon to “success”.

Bold decisions made for the greater good of the party…..not a sign of a good leader ?

The ability to separate the wheat from the chaff….weak and ineffectual leadership ?

        I THINK NOT !

Spot on Gamini. But let’s be honest here. Gonawala Sunil was
Ranil’s man also – in the beginning. The 7/83 Welikade slaughter
of Kuttimani and colleagues leaves much Tamil blood on Ranil’s
hands too. But then, I agree Sri Lankan politics of the current times is a dirty business to be in. No angels there – of either sex or even the neutral gender. It is not a charitable thing to stay – but Ranil is, arguably, the better of the worst lot.

Ranil must forget the past and take Tisaranee aboard. She is precious with the pen and he does not have many of her calibre
around him. Ranil is far too literate for me to remind him politics is a game of strange bed-fellows. Let’s leave “the last refuge of scoundrels” for the time being.

Sengu, Gonwela Sunil was not Ranil’s man. He was an active member of the UNP under Cyril Mathew crowd before RW was put to contest the Biyagama electorate. So naturally he moved about with RW at the beginnig. Once RW came to know the real character of Gonawela Sunil he kept him out and did not make use of him as other Politicians of the day did, using Gonawela Sunil as Wambottas, Soththi Upalis and Baddeygana Sanjeewas to mention a few. So it is unfair to tarnish RW with Gonawela Sunil which many of his critics resort to. Then again it is wrong to paint RW’s hands in blood for the July ’83 tragedy as there were many seniors like Premadasa, Mathew, Gamini Lokuge et al who wielded power in the Party UNP then and RW was a new comer. It is not RW who should be apportioned blame for the ’83 mayhem but JRJ, as he should have controlled. Then again the Deshapremi lot would have overthrown JRJ if he tried to stop it, as Premadasa, Cyril Mathew, Gamini Lokuge, Sirisena Cooray with his B-I-L Somawansa Amarasinghe of the JVP, were responsible largely for the pogrom harnessing the Sinhala Buddhists, the Jarthi Arley crowd, just like what MR is doing today with the American funded BBS and Ravana Balaya et al.

Gamini – No point dragging this on. But I know several who are angry with Ranil for getting children from outside the 2-mile rule of the undeserving into
Royal College at that time – arranged by Ranil’s man G. Sunil,
obviously not for summa/nikang. Ranil knew which side of the bread the butter was on in the 7/83 period when his uncle was under threat from the chauvinists in the Cabinet. By the way, Gamini Lokuge was a junior at that time and was Mathew’s hatchet man in the JSS – also used extensively in the DDC Elections in Jaffna.

Sengu, Gonawela Sunil is not RW’s man, but was there in the UNP before him. GS as you say would have at the beginning got RW’s help to admit children outside the two mile radius, for which he would have collected money definitely. Are you inferring that RW also made money from the exercise?

Unlike all the other crossovers DJ resigned from his seat not depriving the party of nominating the next person. Standing for election from the UPFA gives the voters the opportunity to either re elect him or kick him out. All those who defected from the UNP crossed over being MP’s & continued as members elected on the UNP ticket. DJ thus didn’t deprive his party voters.

He worked hard to bring in reforms & was always in the forefront to agitate against the govt with very little or no support from the leader. Al he got was being marginalized in the party. Its natural to be frustrated for a capable & talented politician such as DJ. He was such a critic of the govt & MR & Co how they can sing praises soon after is hypocrisy At its best. But then they say in politics there are no friends or enemies. Every single politician is corrupt in some way & truth is not in their vocabulary.

Like al those defectors who later contested on the UPFA ticket & won with huge majorities DJ also will for sure. As long as Ranil remains the party leader UNP will never win another election. That’s where the selfish idiot has taken the UNP down to.

It seems like a waste of time to speak to the likes of Dayasiri Jayasekera, a political clown if ever there was one!
The picture that leads this piece speaks very eloquently of all of these “catchers,” other senior UNPers included. It is a pic. that will remain in the minds of those who first saw it as showing what our politicians are worth.
Who does one look to for leadership in this country? Are we destined to go up in flames and then hope that, out of those ashes, will emerge our new Phoenix?

Aney yako, Dayasiri Jayasekeras were heroes to people like you when they were in the opposition. Only now they have become clowns. Get a life, moron.

Similarly, Dayasiri Jayasekara was a clown for your ilk, when he was in the UNP when he revealed who this Tsunami Embezzler MR is, a Murderer, Rogue and a Schemer. Now he has become a Hero and I wonder who the MORON is? Any Guess? I doubt as you do not have the capacity.

        Dominique:
If I am a “moron” in YOUR estimation, I consider it an honour! And since you are so free with your attributions, would you show me ONE instance when I said that Dayasiri or any of his colleagues was a “hero.”
I hope the institution in which you should be confined will permit you to respond to this or is that off limits to all mental patients?

It is sad to note that Sri Lankan political parties which looses members to its opposition do not take advantage of various pictures, video clips and speeches of the member who jumped ship to expose such persons? If the UNP uses the video clips where Dayasiri Jayasekera, and Keheliya Rambukwela have attacked the President and UPFA when they were with the UNP, the masses will clearly understand how dependable these two monkeys who jump from branch to branch are. Why is the UNP not using such video clips and quotes during election campaigns?

Ranil is the most ubderrated leader today but mark my word he will have the last laugh and get back hugely.
Tissaranne I love your writing but you satisy Mara, GORA, BARA, Nara and Chara by slathing Ranil. MARA wants just that-to bring down Ranil because then the whole UNP is no more cheerio then. This is why all these rotten rats like Johnny and Dayasiri leave by attacking Ranil. By hindsight we now know that Ranil is right in keeping these rats at bay and not trusting them. Karu is pleading but Ranil simply ignores. Very good for them.

MR is playing the most dangerous political game of becomming the Dictator for life in our country.

MR has enormous ill gotten wealth not only to buy DJ but the whole Sri Lanka.

Also all of Army, Navy, Air force, both top to bottom positions in the Police force, BBS, Rawana and Rawaya balaya, Judiciary and Chief Justice, planting over 600 top executive, diplomatic, Central Bank and Monetary institutions,All Govt. Administrative, University Academic positions etc, etc, given to Family and Party members while using their influence to back him up on fulfilling his Dictatorial dream.

While this is taking place, country is heading for an economic, moral, communal, religion and social disaster.

Very soon there will be People and Trade union uprising and these could be spill over to another 1983 like Progrom. Therefore people should be educatecd on this matter and make them prepare.

There were some reports in media on this.

    http://www.srilankamirror.lk/news/9294-govt-in-a-cash-crash

Ranil has to show to Citizens how still UNP is united as a party and
how he is going to muster votes in the upcoming PC elections.

Also as I said before, Ranil has to come out from the vacuum and his cocoon and openly tell the masses on the party issues while giving them confidence.

Ranil has to capitalise on the current Economic, social and political situation in the country and use them to his advantage to win election.

Yes until we educate people on what the rulers are doing to our country on daily basis, Rajapakses with their enormous ill gotton money will pump 100 times more to deceive people.

For instant one Govt. PC member said that he spent closer to 70 Million Rupees during the last PC election to get nominated. Who has this kind of money other than making through Kappan and other ill gotten means, while Rajapakses contributing a major share of it.

When an opposition candidate spend 100 rupees on an evert Rajapakses throw in 1000 times more that what oposition spend. These are how all the Black money is collected and well spent.

While Rajapakses have monopolised all media, UNP and Ranil has to come up with an effective plan to counter them.

What I think is that UNP and other opposition Parties should operate their own independent Radio Broadcast channel to reach masses. Either through FM or any other media channels to reach whole of Sri Lanka 24 hours a day to reach both Citizens our expatriate community.

They could obtain funds through their supporters both in Sri Lanka and abroad, donors, corporations advertisements and volunteers.

Second they should distribute Flyers, hand bills, and use Internet, SMS,face book etc, using low cost but effective means to reach public, specially both villege and town folks.

Third they should work closely with all the Trade unions, protests, agitations, marches etc, to reach masses.

Fourth they should constantly volunteer to help poor and needy peopl on various volunteer programs and use those to promote their respective parties.

Fifth they should work both with Our expatriate community, and International community to send their message across Globe.

Sixth they should reach to all clergy, NGO’s, Private and public enterprises, business community, student and Teachers movements, Professional and intellectual community, womens movements etc, and organise constant seminars, publishing books, manuals, leaflets, flyers etc, to promote their respective parties.

Hire a professional Private Intelligence gathering service, security service, Marketing and research institutions, party Promotion and Media organizations, volunteers etc,to reach public and promote Parties.

It’s time for change using 21st century technology and knowledge to promote UNP.

Prepare for the Rajapakse economic collapse and the next 83 Progrom Jathi Aala Kada Kadappan Loot. It’s coming.

    Okay….Srilankans, patriots and my countrymen!
Lets form a party. Name not important. Purpose, critical. At the next General Election – To salvage what is left of Mother Lanka. With the express objective of changing the constitution. Like in the US, the cabinet comprise of 12 Ministers/Secretaries the number of which cannot be changed. Every single redundant ministry and department will be closed up. No hanky panky – You don’t serve a purpose, you did not deserve the job in the first place! Of course innocents will be caught up too but the efficiencies will create other opportunities for them. Every single contract signed by the government will be reviewed by an independent commission and if anything underhand happened, the perpetrators should reveal it voluntarily to avoid jail time or have it done for them and end up in jail. Like JR did for the hijacking – pass laws retroactively to suit this purpose. A few things will happen. Some will face up the music! Great we will forgive them after appropriate retribution. Some will flee leaving everything behind them. That serves us fine. We do not need more crooks anyway.
Revamp the structural weaknesses that have never been corrected since the British made them. And hopefully in 2050, Sri Lanka will become what Lee Kuan Yew thought it would be in 1960’s.

    • 0
      0

      Upul,

Good idea, I agree with you. Limit the ministries to 12 and send the rest home. Also we do not need an opposition. They could go home also and burn down the Parliament. That is where Sri Lanka’s biggers Comedy Jokers and actors live, wasting Tax payer money.

How can we have a Minister of Power and energy who has not even studied in science medium and has not even passed grade 12 exam.

I doubt if she knows even how to change a bulb leave alone knowing about ampiers, watts and circuits etc. That’s why her Corporation is Always break down while increasing prices whenever it feels.

As I wrote before the parliament should be closed down. No point of those Jokers arguing among each other in day time, in front of camera and go together to the bar in the evening for a whisky shot. That’s why they laugh at us, the voters. We should get rid of them for good.

Second all the development, construction, infrastructure projects, long term and short term projects, all service related project etc, everything should come under a planning committee comprised of 30 Highly qualified professionals, educated intellectuals etc, in all the fields along with their advisory board to take decisions on all the projects, implementing, Budgets, awarding contracts, supervising them, executing them and finally making Final payments.

This board should be responsible for everything from beginning to end, including calling for tenders, awarding them, executing the project and final payments etc, etc,

Also everything should be audited by an Independent recognised professional auditing and quality control company. Thereby Govt.could eliminate fraud, 10% commissions and Harbours built on rocks without ships and Jungle Airports without Planes and always breakdown power stations etc.

All complains relating to party politics, fraud, social, minority and all other issues should be directed to respective provincial courts to handle.

At the moment every 36 cents out of every rupee earned as Taxes is spent on Politicians and PC’s Pay and their maintenance. This is a crime for a third world country like us. No where in the world they allocate this much out of tax payers money. Both Parliament MP’s, Ministers and PC’s expenses should be audited.

How come one Parliament Ministers monthly electricity bill alone reach 125,000 rupees and is paid by us Tax payers.

Sri Lanka will be a much better place without these Politikka leeches, and it’s time that we should get rid of them.

These blood sucking Pin Padiyas are the curse for our country.

We know Ranil promised to bring the masses poouring on to the streets, and renewed the promise even as late as last week to kick Rajapaksa out and install his Westminister Model.

    But nothing happened or happening.

    Is it because, ,

    – Like that old Deano song, the Elite are enjoying the Church Choir where even the Muslims and Hindus sing Hyms with one Ms Kadiragarman on Sundays in Bambalapitya?.

Vellalas are busy plannig the “Activities List” for their first Vellla CM in their first mini Eelaam?.

The prolateriet deputy of the UNP is busy trying to stop potential young supporters of him becoming deserters?.

Is it fair to say or imply that they are cowards?.

Yes, they are cowards while Pimps use ill gotten Black money to buy Parliament prosti…tes who could be traded to the highest Bidder.

How much the asking price of the last Prosti…te is the question people ask.

These Pimps not only buy the Parliament but the Buddhist Clergy by giving them Land, Mercedes Benz cars, Foreign tour tickets, free Foreign scholarships, Permenant stay in foreign Buddhist Temples and all expenses been taken care by the Alibaba pimp.

Also the Soora Saradiel pimp bought the Supreme court and the Chief Justice, and the IGP, CB Governor, DIGs and other important people.

Also remember there are still white vans available for those who oppose the Pimp.

The day Kangetta comes to rob you and feed you with Punnakku will not be that far.

Await for the next Parliament comedy show.

Citizens of Sri Lanka are stupid; no argument there. But I don’t think they are that stupid. They know that their lethargy and indifference in the past was what made UNP a powerless and useless opposition. Even though Tisaranee argues that high profile defections will drive UNPers to despair and make them stay at home I doubt that will happen this time around.

I know Tisaranee doesn’t believe that either. I suspect she is pointing out the Rajapaksa game-plan, as predictable it may be. God knows, the stupid voters of Sri Lanka can sure use some help in recognizing the moronic plans of Rajapaksas. There is always a chance that they will fall pray to these stupid tricks.

People are so pathetic that there are many who still hold out hope that Rajapaksas will “turn good” someday… any day, soon.

Tissaranee you are a great writer but your problem is you cannot rid yourself of the dissappointment when Ranil disregarded you.So every time you attack him. Daya J has the same prejudice for the same reasons. You have also contradicted yourself by saying that the UNP has significantly increased its voter base while at the same time saying Ranil is a disaster. Where do you stand? You fail to see how blinded in prejudice yopu are, Tissaranee.
Today the country is governed by uneducated fools and thugs and crooks who are all making big money not caring a damn about the country.Only a man of Ranil’s stature can save Lanka. You and Dayan blame Ranil for sidelining Karu, Sajith, Gooneratne etc. But Ranil knows what these fellows have been up to. He knew about Dayasiri beforehand and so sidelined him. Ranil is silent all the time but he knows what he is about. Take Ranil out and UNP is in tatters. That’s what Mara wants. Tissaranee you are playing into MARA’s hands

A very upset Tisaranee. My sympathies……..

If UNP is getting stronger, people like Dayasiri are smart enough to stick around and build on that ever increasing popular base.

I cannot remember that kind of defections in SLFP during their darkest periods under UNP rule though there have been splits. It required some grass roots level work and a little known (though a veteran in politics) Amarasiri Dodangoda to win the Southern PC to galvanise the masses and the arrival of a new leadership under CBK to change the whole dynamics.

Dont blame Ranil . Dayasiri crossed over for political gain and because of the colossal sum of Rs.250 million he received from the govt.

I also believe this, but why the opposition cant find the facts about this kind of deals ?

Why cant free journalists bring the truth about such deals ?

Why cant free journalists bring the truth story about the health history of state back multi criminals like Duminda De Silva ?

Why cant free journalists contact Singapoian hospital authorities ?

Why the medical professionals were biased when making statements before the nation showing false Diagrams about Duminda^s head injuries ? Why dont Approbation for medical professionals and law professional work with them ? How can the general public trust these professionals any more ?

What would be the response from TOP leadership in this regard ?

So Tisaranee, what might be the story if the self-appointed, Permanent Leader of the Opposition should retire, to ‘spend more time with his long suffering wife’?

Sri Lankan political leadership is more or less based on the principal of ‘Buggins Turn’ and leadership invariably devolves on strutting sixty something Sinhala-buddhist men peddling the usual concoction of tripe that will go down well with the masses educated by rote and always dutifully willing to bow and scrape to the leader of the pack. And the leader of the pack will always stay onside with the rabid men in yellow.Simple formula, guaranteed results.

Opportunism you say. I say not. This is simply a crisis of identity. How can I as a good UNP member differentiate myself from a good member of the SLFP when both of us share the same values and world view? Both of us want to crush the minorities, kill them if possible, destroy them somehow.

Both of us want freedom, we want freedom from the law so that might may rule and plunder may thrive. Both of us want to crush the citizenry into a faceless mass of compliance that does whatever it is told. So who cares where who is? Dayasiri in the UNP is no different from Dayasiri in the SLFP. There is to my knowledge only one person who cannot get into the SLFP and that is Ranil, not because he does not subscribe to the anti minority view but because he understands democracy and parliamentary politics. He is not a good man. He is a bad man, in fact a wicked man who has done some of the wickedest things anyone can think up. But he is a democrat and probably the last one in Sri Lanka. With Ranil out of the way the UNP and SLFP will merge on the plank of sinhala buddhist anti minority fascism to form the long awaited national government that will bring fascism back to the world so that the holy swastika will once more fly high and replace the weak and secular Indian tricolor with its stupid spinning wheel.

Soon all those who do not like this picture will have to live in asylum.

Daya would have a good futture if he is in the UNP. B’cos no one is suitable to lead UNP. Ranil, Sajith or any other all good for nothing. Mahida knows it well. one day Only Daya could take the opposition leader. Mahinda Traped Daya! Daya is a fool; Mahinda is a cunning shrewd politician. He disable UNP.

I can’t understand how a vast number of people continue to refer to Ranil as “intelligent” . What ability has he demostrated over the last two decades ? Divide and rule , and destroy the party and the opposition in the process – he gets full marks for that .

Ranil has also demonstrated clearly that by his ‘born to rule ‘
attitude , his arrogance and pig headedness , he has done more harm to this country than most .

Forget Dayasiri – just a gutless , deceitful , show pony . Others will follow , possibly Rosy – the paragon of virtue , and a role model for all things feminine . Don’t forget that Big John also nearly did the pole vault early last year .Look at John in that photograph, like a little boy with Santa Claus .

Tisaranee! You pipped me to the post!
Ever since reading several volumes of Klemperer’s fascinating diaries from 1932 up to his death (the 3rd & final vol. is not so interesting) I’ve tried to get a copy of his Lingua Tertii Imperii to poach some ideas from it for looking at a similar phenomenon here. Good that u have drawn attention to it & hope someone in the language field (preferably Sinhala) here will decide to study the phenomenon here.

This is a land of impotent men except one, no matter how high they are in the power ladder.
