The Leaders We Deserve

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, competence and commonsense?”- Lee Iaccoca (Where Have All the Leaders Gone?)

The Conference of Birds’ is a peerless jewel in the crown of Islamic literature. Written in the 12th Century by the Persian poet Farid ud-Din Attar, this epic poem tells of an avian Odyssey in search of a king. The birds want the Simorgh[i] to be their king; but when they reach the distant home of that legendary bird, after an epic-journey, all they find is a lake in which they see their own reflections.

The king the birds seek is a spiritual and not an earthly one; ‘The Conference of Birds’ is generally interpreted as an allegorical poem about the quest for God. But this enchanting tale can be seen from a political angle as well, as a depiction of humankind’s eternal search for utopian systems and ideal rulers. The lesson the birds learnt is a lesson not irrelevant to humans as well: leaders are often a reflection of the people who choose them and sustain them, for good or ill.

And that, in Rajapaksa Sri Lanka, is a frightening thought.

Last week, the son of Minister Keheliya Rambukwella almost created a tragedy on a major key when he tried to open the cabin door of a plane-in-flight. The non-Lankan passengers aboard the British Airways flight had reportedly yelled, ‘Asian Idiots’ at the inebriated ministerial brat[ii]. That epithet may have emanated from not knowing which particular Asian country this intoxicated-miscreant hailed from; it may have stemmed from colonial hangovers. Either way, it is an insult to those Asian countries where ministers and their children behave like decent, law-abiding human beings.

Had they cried ‘Sri Lankan Idiots’, they would have been spot-on.

The lexical meaning of the word ‘idiot’ is ‘person so deficient in mind as to be permanently incapable of rational conduct’. The greatest idiots in this story are not Ramith Rambukwella or his ministerial father who tried to turn his mountainous misdeed into the smallest of molehills; or the Rajapaksas who have stocked their cabinet with the likes of Keheliya Rambukwella and Mervyn Silva (imagine the repercussion, for the country and even the regime, had the Ministerial-brat succeeded in opening the cabin door).

The greatest idiots are We, the People, who voted for the likes of Ministers Rambukwella and Silva, who elected the Rajapaksas, who sink into ever greater apathy with every economic-beating or political-outrage the regime inflicts on us.

In Brazil, people are protesting against the prioritisation of the Football World Cup (and the Olympic Games) over health and education, against corruption and against the mismanagement of national resources. “We want a different Brazil”, is their slogan. According to the latest Gallup Poll, the “combination of growing dissatisfaction with public services and widespread perceptions of corruption and insecurity appears to be linked to the erosion in Brazilians’ approval of their leaders. The recent increase in bus fares at a time when the government is spending billions on preparing for the World Cup and the Summer Olympic Games appear to have been the tipping point ….”[iii]

Brazil’s love affair with football is no less passionate than Sri Lanka’s love affair with cricket. And unlike Sri Lanka, Brazil had won the Football World Cup five times. Yet Brazilians have the sense to understand that international-tamashas bring very little benefit to a country; and that hospitals and schools are more important than state-of-the-art sports stadia to a people.

Brazil’s President Rousseff said “the voices of the street want more citizenship, health, transport, opportunities”[iv].

Does our own silence, in the midst of mounting incompetence and malaise, means that we are happy to be misgoverned and hoodwinked, abused and humiliated?

The principal of Raddolugama Pangnananda National School died after a fall in the Rantambe camp. He was undergoing physical exercises, as part of the military training programme the Defence Ministry has imposed on all principals. Will educationists take a stand against this humiliating practice, at least now?[v]

The Rajapaksas who gave us substandard fuel is now giving us substandard gas[vi], another historical-first. 20% of Lankan children under five-years suffer from some form of malnutrition. And the Rajapaksas are planning to build a five-acre artificial island off the Mahinda Rajapaksa Port in Hambantota, for leisure activities.

Are we so totally devoid of intelligence and sense that we cannot understand the harm that is being done to our country? Have we become nothing more than clockwork-toys in the hands of the Rajapaksas, to be wounded-up and down, against this minority or that traitor, as they wish?

Friends of Fanatics

In their determination to prevent a true Lankan unity, the Rajapaksas seem to be encouraging fanatics of every creed.

On the one hand they are facilitating Sinhala-Buddhist fanatics and encouraging deadly campaigns of hate against religious-minorities, especially Muslims. And while thus placing every Muslim man woman and child in danger of another outbreak of majoritarian-violence, the regime is also opening the door wide to the most fundamentalist variety of Islam.

Last month an MOU was signed for the establishment of a university in Kaththankudi, as part of the Mahinda Chinthanaya: “The founding of the first University for Ulamas is to be funded by Saudi Arabia. GCE A/L qualified Moulavy graduates from Mathrasas will be admitted for studies at the university”[vii]. The new university will turn out graduates who adhere to Wahabism, who will be akin to the BBS in their ‘loquacious ignorance’ of Islam’s magnificent historical contribution to science and arts and in their lethal intolerance of every creed and sect but their own.

The sectarian violence which is turning many Islamic-majority countries into charnel houses is being unleashed mainly by Saudi-funded extremist sects. As Dr Ismail Salami pointed out, “The root causes of religious extremism in Pakistan are traceable to the time when the US government sought to oust Soviet forces from Afghanistan. In those days, the ISI…was heavily mobilized by the US and funded by the Saudi Wahhabis to achieve this goal”[viii].

The Rajapaksas who gave us the scourge of the BBS may give us a Lankan Taleban as well.

The BBS has already expressed its intention of becoming involved in education. Do the Rajapaksas intend to hand over the education of future generations to fanatics of every religion, so that Lankans will never be able to unite across ethnic and religious divides to challenge the Ruling Family? Are they deliberately stoking fires of fanaticism in order to stupefy ordinary Lankans of all creeds into clinging to the Kurahan Satakaya seeking protection from the ‘religious others’?

Fear of minorities was used by Sinhala leaders from 1948 onwards to come to/stay in power.

Because Plantation Tamils voted for the left parties, they were transformed from citizens into virtual serfs.

Then came ‘Sinhala Only’.

The Burghers were demonised as socio-cultural aliens and political enemies.

Most Sinhala-Buddhists embraced this malignant, exclusionary and faux patriotism, without consideration, examination or pity.

Now the Rajapaksas seek to turn Lankans into prisoners of religious fanatics of every creed, so that they and their progeny can rule for ever.

Are they the leaders we deserve? Is congenitally stupid what we are?

Tisaranee you forgot to mention another category:-
The English educated “Sinhala Buddhist” professionals who could not work in “Sinhala Only” and so left to try their luck in countries like Nigeria, Ghana etc, and then on to Canada, UK and Australia.

The Rajapake brothers are creating a DEEP STATE whereby the ruling family and a group of influential anti-democratic coalitions within the political system, composed of high-level elements within the intelligence services, military, security, judiciary, and mafia will operate to promote a COUP D’ETAT to enable Gotabaya Rajapassa’s ascent as Lanka’s first MILITARY DICTATOR – in the name of “protecting Buddhism” from the minorities. Never mind that Sinhala Buddhism has been has distorted, perverted, MILITARIZED and destroyed by Gotabaya.

The notion of deep state that Gotabaya is creating, is similar to that of a “state within the state” and evident in many military dictatorships in the Mid East and Pakistan’s ISI which Gota works with. The political agenda of the deep state involves an allegiance to nationalism, corporatism, and state interests. Violence and other means of pressure have historically been employed in a largely covert manner to manipulate political and economic elites and ensure specific interests are met within the seemingly democratic framework of the political landscape.
The outlook and behavior of the Rajapakse family and associated predominantly military and political elites who constitute the deep state, and work to uphold national interests, are shaped by an entrenched belief that the country is always “on the brink” of being DIVIDED. This is the bogey that Rajapassa promotes in the form of Balu Sena etc. Sri Lanka liberals will need to be vigilant given the levels of militarization as the ECONOMIC CRISIS bites and people mobilize against the Rajapakse regime on the streets. Big question is will China play the role of supporter of the Gotabaya dictatorship as the US does with the Egyptian military?

Thanks to our leaders our grand children will have to pay back Rs.2, 542.2 billion or more. Now TNA and UNP are going to win some provincial councils. Best option is to get rid of 13A all together at this stage.TNA is sure to win LTTE leaders Daya Master and Thamilan also come to power. Why not repeal it completely soon.

13A is a costly mistake, total outstanding external debt of the Government of Sri Lanka as at the end of April 2013 is US$20.0 billion that is Rs.2, 542.2 billion, according to the Mid-Year Fiscal Position Report released recently.

Nation can’t afford to maintain useless diluted 13A. Complete abolition is the only option. Otherwise we get leaders like LTTE leaders Daya Master and Thamilan as well.

As Long as Mahinda Protects buddhism and sihalees from evil Islam and Muslims, we should keep him in power.

No other leader is capable of doing this.
Let mahinda finish the Islamic threat on Sri Lanka as well like he did finish the LTTE.

Uh, Saman, haven’t you heard the news? Rajapaksa did not finish off the LTTE.

LTTE leaders are now well-ensconed in the government. One is even a vice president of the SLFP, and was given a bogus passport to travel to UK, remember? Others are contesting NPC elections on the government’s ticket. KP is running an NGO with state patronage.

Remember G G Ponna demanded a Hindu university for Yarl-desh.

Remember Sinhala/Buddhism has its own university across the island.

The Islamic Republic of Kaththankudi-stan deserves its own university.

      Whats wrong with that?

Yusuf, you are so ignorant, unless of course you are non muslim assuming a muslims name. 1st of all you need not bring in the noble name in to this forum. Keep your prayers to your self. Don’t open topics which leads to tarnishing religion (any).

Then again if you know Islam even a little bit, you will know it is he who installed such rulers among us when we as Muslims don’t do our part. It is well documented. so this is something which we ourselves brought on us.

Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Minister in charge of Social Integration is sleeping on the job of preventing Hate Speech and bringing a Bill against incitement of religious and racial hatred. Rajapassa has No understanding of multiculturalism or multireligious co-existence and Neither does dead leftist Vasu!
Brilliant Analysis here and hats off once again Thisaraness for telling the truth to the Sinhalaya modayas!
Gotabaya Rajapass and Mahinda Rajapass are increasingly desperate as the BBS that they founded has become a Frankenstein that they cannot control. Thus they is promoting the Talibanization of Buddhism and Islam in Sri Lanka in order to DIVIDE, DISTRACT and RULE the Sinhalaya modayas form their CORRUPTION and CRIMINALITY and looting of public wealth by the Rajapassa family and cronies – by promoting religious extremism.
The uneducated and uncultured Rajapassa brothers are planning to destroy the multicultural social fabric of Lanka, by dividing the ethnic and religious communities, rather than give up power as they are increasingly hated by the people. Gotabaya who has militarized Sinhala Buddhism and destroyed it (just like the military in Pakistan uses Islam to rule). Gota the goon will finally have a COUP (as in Egypt) and take over as Military Dictator when the peoples protests start in the streets of Colombo..

Comrade Vasu is also suffering from “Somnambulism”. It is so acute, he is a vegetable living with “Oxygen” provided by the government in cash and kind!!! So are the other Somnambulist politicians who are “Senior Ministers”. The public is forced to pay them to “talk” while “sleeping”.

There is no rational conduct under the influence, mere fatal stupidity. The Muslims who take an extreme view (beyond the call of the Noble Quran and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) are known as Khawarijs. Defaming an Islamic Scholar is a form of Islamophobia. The author should be careful not to injure the sentiments of Muslims through out the world. Sri Lanka needs the Islamic countries and maintaining good relationships with them promotes good economic sense.

They are sane, many voted for them.
        They attend other religious rituals
        They marry across ethnic divide.
They take care of country’s coffers as their own.

They are patriotic hence they are opposed to anything foreign.

She is better than a man like you who who will not let religious bigots control Sri Lanka. She is a true patriot. She wants intergrity, honesty, and transparency in government. If there something wrong? Lesser men like you would have given up and taken up residency abroad, not her. She is a true patriot.

People can always love their country without having
to love their government. In Sri Lanka, if you really love

Duminda and Mervin while looting the country.

Either the Rajapaksa’s are shortsighted on top of their corruption, greed and arrogance, or they are used as mindless pawns by evil elements with agenda’s that do not bode well for Sri Lanka. Dividing and ruling has never worked anywhere. It is only the people and country that suffers. After decades of war and strife, it seems those who profited by selling weapons, training terrorists and soldiers, and played malicious games, will once again benefit from the blood shed by innocent civilians, the real casualties in such war games.

The Sri Lankan people are resigned to whatever their leaders do, and now hitting referees on a playing field, causing havoc on an airplane, the brats of uneducated leaders showing their arrogance, and murders by politicians, is part of the Sri Lankan way of life. The land that once boasted of following the most peaceful Teacher, seems to have gone to the devil.

Sleep walking appears to be a familial ailment within the Rambukwella family. Not long ago did the senior Rambukwella have a fall at a hotel in Melbourne Australia by missing his step in the night seriously injuring his leg. This is not a laughing matter. They must do something about it for others could also get unwittingly injured due to their somnambulism if left untreated. There also home remedies that could be tried out. Bensen

If only the “elite” Jaffna Tamil Politicians had the heart and the respect to the plantation Tamil “coolies” (as they were branded then) and embraced the Tamils in Ceylon (at that time Sri Lanka) then we would have not seen LTTE, Jathika Hela Urumaya, Bodu Bala Sena or Ravana Balaya. We would not have seen 1983 riots or any other riots that we have seen and are being continued in various forms today. AT that time the entire economy of Ceylon was dependent on Tea, Rubber and Coconut. If the so called “coolies” joined the “elite” at that time we would have seen an equitable political system and a just society which we can only dream of today.

Estate Superintendents also suffer now. The plantations industry held a silent protest today condemning the murder of an Estate Superintendent in Deraniyagala, urging the government to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

The Ceylon Planters Society said that had the authorities taken action when the deceased was assaulted two months ago, the situation would not have gone this far.

“We condemn this murder unreservedly and we want all the culprits brought to book immediately,” it said. Sri Lanka is a lawless State.

I think it is not the duty of IC to react in that way. We the people should have to protest against the opposition asking them to build up a grand opposition against the brutal leaders. I wonder how come they the rulers further claims to have a 2/3 mandate in the parliament, while its some members of the coalitions bear different opinions about all these alarming issues.

I wish arab spring like protests would right at the VERY critical moment of the country, make a lesson to brutal rulers so that R2P can be the ONLY solution protecting the rights of the people in the country.

Don’t blame the people. The ruling classes keep them stupid. The education system does not equip them with the discernment and the critical skills to enable them to be sufficiently sceptical.
They are presented with no credible opposition.
The rich and powerful stand aside and hope to game the system – they can buy good health and education for their families and as a last resort can move overseas.
The media is dominated by the state and the agenda of the ruling elite -ordinary folk cannot access the CT.
Men and women of integrity, intellect and decency do not enter the political arena as it’s made so unpalatable by the thugs and demagogues who rig the system in their favour.
The people are indeed numbed into submissiveness by superstition and circuses.
The solution cannot come from those already engaged in politics – they have all failed the people miserably.

there is an article – Playing With Fire Again – by TG – it is all about her hatred towards every thing in Sri Lanka. buddhism, sinhala buddhists, sinhala – only.

I can not understand why TG is such a hypocrite. she is using a Very Sinhala – Buddhist name and bash every thing in Sinhala.

If TG is very honest to her conscience, first she should change her name. then should start writing about Sri Lanka.

      Hey Jim Softy,

At least TG has the courage to write under her own name. What are you doing? You take a foreign pseudonym and try to defend Sri Lanka. What a coward are you.

      Jim Softy,

At least being a woman Tisaranee has Guts to call spade a spade.

Knowing that the Cowards use white van goons,Thugs,Mafia Rowdy Gangs and other underground special forces to abduct, intimidate and murder Reporters, while those same cowards are hiding behind over 100 body guards, intelligence services and special forces to safeguard themselves.

Also Tisaranee has more Guts than some of the so called Opposition party Parliament spineless crook cabbages. Those crooks are there only to serve themselves while getting Parliament Pin Padi. They are partly responsible for what’s happening to our country. Those Spineless a..s h…es.

Why do you call Tisaranee a hypocrite…..Don’t you read the newspapers to understand what is going on in the country. Being a Sinhala Buddhist qualify you to do any dirty thing under the sun and still get away from it, like our sacred Parliament.

Read the following news in today’s Sunday Leader paper.

      http://www.thesundayleader.lk/2013/07/07/no-code-of-ethics-for-rambukwella

Be realistic and don’t be another fake Sinhala Buddhist blood only lunatic.

Finally Jim Softy, please reveal your true name. Atleast use a sinhala fake name than an Imported Sudda’s foreign name.

Better be a Jimmy Dean………than Jim Softy.

At least TG has the courage to write under her own name. What do you do? You assume a foreign psuedonym and try to defend Sinhala Buddhist Sri Lanka. What an advertisement for Sinhala Buddhists. Such cowardice.

Buddagaya Bombings are a direct result of this Sinhala Buddhist Bashing campaign spearheaded by Ms T.

The list of pack members, who have become apologists for the Indian Terrorists is vivid proof.

Will this terrorism raise its ugly head in places like Nagadeepa and Seruwila?.

Recent attacks on Pilgrims and their Monks in Mahabodi Madras, and this incident now targetting the same is a clear indication that this is a growing menace to the Sinhala Buddhists.

They can avoid going to Buddagaya to save themselves. How can they do the same on their home turf is the worry.

Where is your logic? TG’s comments are not the cause, and you know it. It may have something to do with the Rohingya issue in Myanmar or the BBS activity here. TG’s bashing is to prevent such incidents. Every action has a reaction. Violence begets violence. Place the blame where it is due.

Why don’t any of you answer the question: why cannot our people rise up like in Egypt and chuck Rajapakse out? The worst leader we have had in our history.

Ha, ha, Piyumi. Have you not heard of how our brave Sri Lankans fled to the hills yelling “Onna Koti Enawa!? Just like during ancient times when our ancestors ran away from the Portuguese marauders, instead of fighting them, mistaking them for drinking blood when all it happened to be was wine. Can you ever expect our puny lankans to put up any rebellion like the Egyptians? You must be dreaming.

        Kotta Kelangu,

I think over 100,000 true patriots sacrificed their lives to change the Governing system, but ended up paying with their lives due to poor planning during the last two failed insurrections.Still some of those bones are found in Matale.

After winning the LTTE war the Regime has increased it’s military might to a very high degree, taken over Police, media, judiciary, Buddhist priests and foreign policy and due to these, a type of Arab Spring will never be successful other than all the opposition parties unite and fight together democratically on a regime change.

How far the opposition parties are united is the question to ask as some opposition leaders also act like dictators.

Only the people with all communities, races and religions standing together could bring a regime change.

We need a new direction, new type of thinking and Governance and proper qualified scholars and professionals to govern our country and not a Parliament full of uneducated and uncultured thug goats who have ruined it.

Hope there will be a change for good.

      Piyumi dear.

You mean your people ,the Moderate Vigilantes camping in Torrinto Square !.

You think their mums and dads who are trying hard to shed the extra pounds gained from the Econoic Boom and drop the Cholesterol levels wil allow that?.

If you have other plans like bussing in our rurl poor with a bottle of arrack and a few quid like in the old days, forget it.

Even if you get some JVPers, and rent a crowd from Keselwatta still our Army wouldn’t kill them wholesale like they did in Cairo.
