The Mighty Fall From Grace!

By Sharmini Serasinghe

“Anyone can deal with victory. Only the mighty can bear defeat.” – Adolf Hitler

On 19 November 2005, when you Mr. Percy Mahendra (Mahinda) Rajapaksa, assumed the mantle of the 6th Executive President of Sri Lanka, many of us, including diehard UNP supporters, hailed you as a true son of the soil, who would finally make things right, for our country. Such was the hope we optimists, had in you.

Some even said, “Mahinda is one President, who has blundered his way to success”. At the time, it sounded funny, but true. After all, you were the pleasant and simple village guy, forever the underdog in the political arena, catapulted to the top, and had to find his way around. But you seemed to get it right eventually, though rather clumsily.

When you did, what all of your predecessor didn’t have it in them to do; give full freedom to the three armed forces, to rid the country of the LTTE menace, the masses bowed to you, with gratitude and relief. Hence, you shall forever be remembered, as the leader who set us free, from a ruthless terrorist outfit!

But then, the “We Won the War” phobia came over you. When the masses voted you in, with their hearts and not their heads, for a second term in 2010, you lost it! And that was the beginning of your downfall!

Those sycophants around you made you feel like the uncrowned King of Sri Lanka, and it rapidly seeped into your psyche. You then started to act like you had the right to remain our leader, ad infinitum. And what you eventually did ruthlessly, to ensure that, is now old hat.

As our President Maithripala Sirisena mentioned in his address to the nation, this country needs an ordinary man to serve its people, as its ‘Chief Servant’, NOT a King!

That said it all!

Your Faux Pas

Your first faux pas, amongst many, was the ‘bull in a china shop’ manner in which you dealt with your predecessor Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

I quote from an article I penned in February 2007- National Interest- my foot!

“You see, those of us women, who were born to a combination of Southern plus Kandyan parentage, can be quite an unpredictable force to reckon with. We lie low until the storm blows over, and then we rise above it all with such force, and all kinds of surprises. Better keep an eye over your shoulder, there is no telling what will happen.” So now you know, what I meant by the above, eight years ago!

Your bête noire, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, returned for vengeance, got it and left!

Next on your list of faux pas, to secure your position, you broke a world record by ‘gathering’ and producing a humongous Cabinet of Ministers and deputies; many of them unfit to sweep the floors, of the hallowed Parliament. This included undesirable elements like Mervyn Silva and his ilk. Even a zoo-keeper would have found it challenging, to control such a depraved bunch.

I’m sure Mr. Rajapaksa, even you didn’t know, who most of these Ministers, Deputies and MPs were; there were so many in the circus you called a Cabinet.

Then you went an unforgivable step further, by stoking the tinderbox of ethno-religious extremism, by pampering Buddhist extremists, such as that despicable man Gnanasara, and his Bodu Bala Sena (BBS).

Things really started going wrong for you, when you showed no signs of bringing to book, such menaces to society. No matter what they did to insult and harm our fellow Sri Lankans of the Muslim and Christian faiths, you simply looked the other way. By doing so, you turned Buddhism into a mockery in this country.

Only a morally bankrupt demagogue would resort to using ethno-religious extremism, and you Mr. Rajapaksa, was such!

Never did we Sri Lankans; Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim, feel so polarized on grounds of our ethnicity and religious beliefs, as under your leadership. For this, you ought to hang your head in shame!

Had 51.3% of our people not stood their ground on the 8th of January, 2015, we would have been looking at another protracted war, this time on ethno- religious grounds, of mind boggling dimensions.

Also, those very same demons, you were pampering, might have ended up strangling you with your own ‘satakaya’. Remember what became of President Premadasa, after he gifted arms and weapons to the LTTE? Remember what Somarama did, to Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike?

Any leader, who remains too long at the helm, like you did Mr. Rajapaksa, loses touch with the common man and his woes. And this is precisely what happened to you. You got used to, and took for granted, the ‘good life’ at the top, and all the pampered glory that went with it. You appeared not to give two hoots, for what the ordinary man who voted you in, was enduring. These ‘mundane’ issues appeared to bother you, only when an election was round the corner. What hypocrisy!

Then there was that abominable ‘Victory Day’ in the month of May, which you insisted on ‘celebrating’, come hell or high water, despite thousands of your own innocent countrymen perishing, or becoming refugees in the process. The vulgar display of pomp and pageantry associated with this ‘Victory Day’, made most of us, sick to our stomachs.

Had you been a true Buddhist leader, you would have shown some compassion and sensitivity, towards all those fellow Sri Lankans, who gave life and limb to make this so called ‘victory’ possible. After all, it was our own, who perished for mistakes of your own political predecessors, and not an unwelcome foreign invader!

But no, instead you had to ‘celebrate’ this so called ‘Victory Day’, in the most crass and tasteless way possible, with such pomp and pageantry.

After the “We Won the War” phobia devoured you, many of us ceased to expect your leadership to show such qualities as wisdom, vision and direction.

You ignored the God-given opportunity to do right by the Tamil community of this country. Instead, you went on to divide the Sinhalese and Muslims as well. What were you hoping to gain, by kindling and keeping the embers of disharmony among the populace, glowing and alive?

The trauma of defeat, for one such as you Mr. Rajapaksa, must be a difficult one. The transition from ‘Honourable’ to ‘another’ must surely be unbearable.

Now that you have time on your hands, Mr. Rajapaksa, I sincerely hope you will find it in you, to repent all the wrongs you permitted to happen, under your leadership; especially, the ‘white-vanning’, disappearances and murder of so many of our fourth-estate, disliked by you or your cohort of stooges.

I also sincerely hope, you now realise, that no matter how many Gods you bribe, candles you light, coconuts you break, barks of Bo trees you kiss, and thingamabobs you clasp in your hand, when ‘Karma’ dictates “It’s time to go”, you have no option, but GO!

In this instance, ‘Karma’ made you carve out your own departure, when you placed all your faith, in a ‘quack’ astrologer, who now claims, “Not all of Nostradamus’ predictions have come true either”.

Perhaps, it would do you good Mr. Rajapaksa, to revisit the teachings of the Buddha, and take heart in his words, ‘NOTHING is permanent’!

“I never thought of losing, but now that it’s happened, the only thing is to do it right. That’s my obligation to all the people who believe in me. We all have to take defeats in life. ” – Muhammad Ali

I feel MR never thought of a defeat.

That alone hint how could a man of that grade would ever focus interntional commuinities. His guesses were almost like ones that are kept in cages for long. Whoever think that his political boldness put the stop to elemination terror. I now believe, it was just the stories spread by their favourite media instituations misleading the majority rural masses – who are the vulnerable gullible vote force of MR’s political existence.

Even if I prayed this changed to be dawn, but I never thought that people – the intoxicated and hallozinated by MR thoughts ( mama thamai miniha .. by keeping his hands on his chest.. ) would send him home this way. I really thought – he would win.. but thatproved people of the country today are intelligent than we guess about them.

Ms Serasinghe, You can join the “I told so before every one else” queue at your leasure.

It is growing by the minuite.

You probably have a spot before Maaru Sira, Hakim, Mustafa, Bathiurdeen, Sarath Amunugama, but just behind Mervyn Silva and Sajin Vas Gunawardena.

We are waiting eagerly to experience “good governance” minus nepotism. So far, have seen Ranil W appointed PM ultra-vires, and his cousin Rajiv Wijesinha and Nephew Ruwan Wijewardene in the ministry.

Probably Maaru Sira did not know the relationships of these people to his ‘Sir’ and therefore its not nepotism.

We await the appointment of Chandrika as Madam Extraordinaire, Sunethra Bandaranayake to oversee womens affairs and Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu as a special advisor on good governance (foreign currency accounts), any time soon.

      Humbug!

If Sharmini were to list out all of MR’s faux pas, she would have to write a book.

I think she summed it up under “………. is now old hat.”

Well said Sharmini. You hit the nail in the head. I am proud to know that the majority of Sri Lankans saw what you and I saw and reacted accordingly to send a clear and precise message. Sub-letting Buddhism over to the rabid BBS to abuse and denigrade at will was a clear signal to what levels these goons were willing to stoop down. What a great country we live in that we have true Buddhists who will fight such menace. Not to mention the Muslims, Hindu and Christians who stood up against those who abuses Buddhism. Well done! Hopefully the days are nearer when we will see ALL Sri Lankans standing up to rebuild a country that we can all care and share as brothers and sisters or fathers and mothers regardless of our race, cast or religion. We just need a bit of positive leadership. Im hoping it comes before the paint on my left pinky nail fades.

Lovely lessons in that article, First the man denied his defeat, then came the shock. Now he seems to be accepting his fall, rather flat on his face. This article did not touch on the corruption and nepotism, much but, I agree the King was totally blinded by his power and the bit “Those sycophants around you made you feel like the uncrowned King of Sri Lanka, and it rapidly seeped into your psyche.” was MR’s biggest mistake, and the best LESSON to the new President!
To me MR is to be blamed for everything, I mean everything what happened, starting from stealing Tsunami money, wasting state funds and allowing people around him to have a ball with state, peoples money… You are responsible and accountable! Bodu Bala sena, Some minister getting 400 million in his account,Kudu shipments in PM’s name, your sons car races and Russian prostitutes under the sacred Kandy tooth relic, It was YOU. If you had only kicked some asses starting from Namal, Mervyn to Lansas and Rohithas,You would have still won this time but only a good Leader could do it and I am sorry you are not.

The whole country agrees 100% with Ms. Sharmani Serasinghe. Mahinda Rajapaksa lost the golden opportunity to bring harmony to Sinhalese,Tamils,Muslims and others after the war. Instead he brushed salt on the wounds of Tamils and Muslims. Still there were idiots in the south who were carried over by the propaganda lies spread by state media. Let it be a good lesson to all those who believe only single sided views. After all it is the short memory of the Sinhales who forget the past quickly as predicted by Prabaharan, which resulted in Mahinda Rajapaksa getting so much votes from the south.

Yes, you couldn’t have said it better Sharmini. Hats off to you.

Phew, what an indictment, and to add to that.

When he had 2 more years to go to end his term of office, he called an early election and virtually dug his own grave, in spite of him having everything going for him. 2/3rd majority in Parliament, winning most of all the local council elections etc.

When he could have bowed out gracefully after a full period of his 2nd term like his predecessors, he foolishly attempted a third term and got kicked out unceremoniously.

When he thought the opposition was in a fray and couldn’t mount an effective challenge to his leadership, it took someone from his own cabinet of ministers to show him how it could be done.

All these wrong decisions started to happen within the last six months of his leadership. To be more exact, I like to think it started with BBS attacks on minorities, and he did nothing to serve justice. This I consider as divine justice. Others may think differently.

      Marwan:-
“When he could have bowed out gracefully after a full period of his 2nd term like his predecessors, he foolishly attempted a third term and got kicked out unceremoniously.”

If MR had followed the Buddha’s Teachings in the Kalama Sutta,'(When you Know for Yourself that something is Right)’ instead of following the Advice of a Quack Astrologer, and accepting the ‘Blessings’ of the likes of Gandassara, he would still be the President, for another two years.

Mara must be kicking Himself, now that the Veil has been lifted from His eyes, and He can see the True situation, instead of the one created by the Sycophants around Him!

Nicely written article.. My hats off to u ma’am. Turning point….. UVA elections after the Aluthgama Massacare and the inferno that followed. MARA thought he could win the election by winning ONLY the SINHALA BUDDHIST votes, but alas how wrong he was to be heavily petting Gandassara of the BBS. To a point MR’s down fall should be pointed at his siblings Gota and Basil who plundered so much wealth. and instilled so much fear on people. white van grease yaka and much more. I know of a guy who had a land adjoining the Apollo Hospital, A defender with about 6 ppl were sent to fetch himhe was asked if his name was Mr X and he said yes, he was shown all documents related to the property and he was ordered to be present at a place at a certain time. He knew where the order had come from. when he went he was asked sing already prepared documents and a small bag containing little money was handed over to him and he was asked to vacate the place immediately. Without a word he had left. I wish he can produce evidence to the bribery commission and re claim his property. The Jarapassas were doing so much crimes..they never thought a day would dawn for them to be held responsible…..Karma is sure a b****… good riddance for the losers..

” Some even said, “Mahinda is one President, who has blundered his way to success”.

Is this not true of Sirisena too. As reported in CT, it is a sad fact of life that at least half of our MPs do not even have ‘O’ levels. Our own newly minted President has been endowed with a degree in Agriculture in some foreign newspapers. Is it NOT time to set minimal educational requirements for the country’s lawmakers, and thereby get rid of a lot of the unsavoury behaviour seen everyday in Parliament ?

    Sharmini Serasinghe,

    Excellent article.
    Profoundly elaborated with correct information.
What you have mentioned is utterly and truly correct.
We all were dreaming and anxiously waiting to see the repercussion and the outcome of Mahinda rajapaksa purposely committed.
We are so fortunate to see it in our life time.
We must record and preserve these facts for our future generation.
Then no one will follow what Mahinda Rajapaksa did.

Former President Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaratunga profoundly guided her both children to profession and they gracefully behaved when she was in power but remember how Mahinda’s foolish three sons despicably behaved.

No one respect and no any moral and admirable record to find about these three morons.

No one feel any sympathy towards them. Millions of people desperately hate them and ferociously reject them.

No any single space for them to stand in our society now.

So many facts are to be written but your presentation is remarkable.

Kindly invite you to inscribe more and more for the benefit of multitude of whole mass.

    Well Done!

    Shamini:

“Then there was that abominable ‘Victory Day’ in the month of May, which you insisted on ‘celebrating’, come hell or high water, despite thousands of your own innocent countrymen perishing, or becoming refugees in the process. The vulgar display of pomp and pageantry associated with this ‘Victory Day’, made most of us, sick to our stomachs.”

After the pain and suffering MR inflicted on them, and finally robbing them of their dignity, he still had the gall to expect them to support and vote for him. The “devil you know” rang aloud. They made him president and they packed him off too. This fool had the best opportunity to heal this nation but instead his racist streak and greed for power got into his head. A liar by no small means, he will face the music eventually.

“I also sincerely hope, you now realise, that no matter how many Gods you bribe, candles you light, coconuts you break, barks of Bo trees you kiss, and thingamabobs you clasp in your hand, when ‘Karma’ dictates “It’s time to go”, you have no option, but GO! In this instance, ‘Karma’ made you carve out your own departure, when you placed all your faith, in a ‘quack’ astrologer, who now claims, “Not all of Nostradamus’ predictions have come true either”.

Very true. At the time he went to Tirupathi, someone asked me how on earth can the Tirupathi deity bless such a megalomaniac and murderer. Not that I believe in such trivialities, I told him that it is the govt leaders and the temple priests and management who offered their blessings to MR, all for money, not the deity itself. After all, the deity never spoke. I also told him that MR actually shot himself by presenting himself in front of the deity – his judgement day. I even told that he lost the election on that day. That was the perhaps the judgement of the Creator.

As for the quack astrologer, it now appear he has been playing ball with the law of probabilities. He ought to be ashamed of himself and if he values the spirit behind astrology, he should hang himself. A good astrologer would have definitely been able to predict MR’s fall from grace. This quack was/is merely interested in packing his fingers with rings and filling up his chest with his ill-gotten gains. The first and foremost dharma of an astrologer is NOT to take even a single penny and interpret in an unbiased manner, not hide behind Nostradamus. What a shameful creep.

    Sharmini,
This is the first time I read your writing. You said it with appropriate punch lines and I thoroughly enjoyed reading every line. I only hope MR has adequate language skills to understand your message. By the way did you read the editorial of the last Sunday Observer? What type of prostitution are these state owned media editors practicing? Can you please have a private chat with the State owned media moguls and advice them how to tow a neutral line and practice objective journalism without behaving like “panthakaryas”?

The makers of the best chocolates are the Flemish that is where the roman emperor Carlos 1 was born and sent 5 ships to discover Philippines for the Spanish and Indonesia for his flemish bird of VOC.

VOC came to Kandy plains with Golden Balls, Cocoa Bean, Coffee from Indonesia- VOC came the other way eastern not western like arabs portugese brits.

The dirge that they all sing at truths funeral is
`I am entirely right and you are entirely wrong`
Just like Hitler for a limited truth untill – absurdity.

Socrates started the mania for definition in Europe. There are busy words and idle words, words that do duty in workday life and words that exist only in philosophy/religion seminars, and also a distinction between definitions of Socrates and Francis Bacon and modern professor Shakespeare, who had the most intimate feeling of life and another from the concentration camp Sartre, certainly got along without trying to define anything, or rather because he did not try to define anything, and for that reason, his words had a body` which other writers lacked, and his language was infused with that sense of human tragedy and that is often missing today. We can no more hold his words down to any particular conception of woman.

I liked the Asian concept of the bamboo tree that sways with the wind than the old oak tree. That is exactly what NaMo (lathi and kakhi shorts like balloons marching at drill every morning what a funny sight for a martial race) did to China and Gota by joining Israel from now on and signing with Russia yet not far from uncle Sam.
The first world ruler was Virgin Queen Elizabeth- she listened so she won all the way.
