The Mighty Fall From Grace!

On 19 November 2005, when you Mr. Percy Mahendra (Mahinda) Rajapaksa, assumed the mantle of the 6th Executive President of Sri Lanka, many of us, including diehard UNP supporters, hailed you as a true son of the soil, who would finally make things right, for our country. Such was the hope we optimists, had in you.

Some even said, “Mahinda is one President, who has blundered his way to success”. At the time, it sounded funny, but true. After all, you were the pleasant and simple village guy, forever the underdog in the political arena, catapulted to the top, and had to find his way around. But you seemed to get it right eventually, though rather clumsily.

When you did, what all of your predecessor didn’t have it in them to do; give full freedom to the three armed forces, to rid the country of the LTTE menace, the masses bowed to you, with gratitude and relief. Hence, you shall forever be remembered, as the leader who set us free, from a ruthless terrorist outfit!

But then, the “We Won the War” phobia came over you. When the masses voted you in, with their hearts and not their heads, for a second term in 2010, you lost it! And that was the beginning of your downfall!

Those sycophants around you made you feel like the uncrowned King of Sri Lanka, and it rapidly seeped into your psyche. You then started to act like you had the right to remain our leader, ad infinitum. And what you eventually did ruthlessly, to ensure that, is now old hat.

As our President Maithripala Sirisena mentioned in his address to the nation, this country needs an ordinary man to serve its people, as its ‘Chief Servant’, NOT a King!

That said it all!

Your Faux Pas

Your first faux pas, amongst many, was the ‘bull in a china shop’ manner in which you dealt with your predecessor Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

I quote from an article I penned in February 2007- National Interest- my foot!

“You see, those of us women, who were born to a combination of Southern plus Kandyan parentage, can be quite an unpredictable force to reckon with. We lie low until the storm blows over, and then we rise above it all with such force, and all kinds of surprises. Better keep an eye over your shoulder, there is no telling what will happen.” So now you know, what I meant by the above, eight years ago!

Your bête noire, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, returned for vengeance, got it and left!

Next on your list of faux pas, to secure your position, you broke a world record by ‘gathering’ and producing a humongous Cabinet of Ministers and deputies; many of them unfit to sweep the floors, of the hallowed Parliament. This included undesirable elements like Mervyn Silva and his ilk. Even a zoo-keeper would have found it challenging, to control such a depraved bunch.

I’m sure Mr. Rajapaksa, even you didn’t know, who most of these Ministers, Deputies and MPs were; there were so many in the circus you called a Cabinet.

Then you went an unforgivable step further, by stoking the tinderbox of ethno-religious extremism, by pampering Buddhist extremists, such as that despicable man Gnanasara, and his Bodu Bala Sena (BBS).

Things really started going wrong for you, when you showed no signs of bringing to book, such menaces to society. No matter what they did to insult and harm our fellow Sri Lankans of the Muslim and Christian faiths, you simply looked the other way. By doing so, you turned Buddhism into a mockery in this country.

Only a morally bankrupt demagogue would resort to using ethno-religious extremism, and you Mr. Rajapaksa, was such!

Never did we Sri Lankans; Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim, feel so polarized on grounds of our ethnicity and religious beliefs, as under your leadership. For this, you ought to hang your head in shame!

Had 51.3% of our people not stood their ground on the 8th of January, 2015, we would have been looking at another protracted war, this time on ethno- religious grounds, of mind boggling dimensions.

Also, those very same demons, you were pampering, might have ended up strangling you with your own ‘satakaya’. Remember what became of President Premadasa, after he gifted arms and weapons to the LTTE? Remember what Somarama did, to Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike?

Any leader, who remains too long at the helm, like you did Mr. Rajapaksa, loses touch with the common man and his woes. And this is precisely what happened to you. You got used to, and took for granted, the ‘good life’ at the top, and all the pampered glory that went with it. You appeared not to give two hoots, for what the ordinary man who voted you in, was enduring. These ‘mundane’ issues appeared to bother you, only when an election was round the corner. What hypocrisy!

Then there was that abominable ‘Victory Day’ in the month of May, which you insisted on ‘celebrating’, come hell or high water, despite thousands of your own innocent countrymen perishing, or becoming refugees in the process. The vulgar display of pomp and pageantry associated with this ‘Victory Day’, made most of us, sick to our stomachs.

Had you been a true Buddhist leader, you would have shown some compassion and sensitivity, towards all those fellow Sri Lankans, who gave life and limb to make this so called ‘victory’ possible. After all, it was our own, who perished for mistakes of your own political predecessors, and not an unwelcome foreign invader!

But no, instead you had to ‘celebrate’ this so called ‘Victory Day’, in the most crass and tasteless way possible, with such pomp and pageantry.

After the “We Won the War” phobia devoured you, many of us ceased to expect your leadership to show such qualities as wisdom, vision and direction.

You ignored the God-given opportunity to do right by the Tamil community of this country. Instead, you went on to divide the Sinhalese and Muslims as well. What were you hoping to gain, by kindling and keeping the embers of disharmony among the populace, glowing and alive?

The trauma of defeat, for one such as you Mr. Rajapaksa, must be a difficult one. The transition from ‘Honourable’ to ‘another’ must surely be unbearable.

Now that you have time on your hands, Mr. Rajapaksa, I sincerely hope you will find it in you, to repent all the wrongs you permitted to happen, under your leadership; especially, the ‘white-vanning’, disappearances and murder of so many of our fourth-estate, disliked by you or your cohort of stooges.

I also sincerely hope, you now realise, that no matter how many Gods you bribe, candles you light, coconuts you break, barks of Bo trees you kiss, and thingamabobs you clasp in your hand, when ‘Karma’ dictates “It’s time to go”, you have no option, but GO!

In this instance, ‘Karma’ made you carve out your own departure, when you placed all your faith, in a ‘quack’ astrologer, who now claims, “Not all of Nostradamus’ predictions have come true either”.

Perhaps, it would do you good Mr. Rajapaksa, to revisit the teachings of the Buddha, and take heart in his words, ‘NOTHING is permanent’!

    *** Having posted my comments to welcome you back I had a quick browse and I couldn’t miss the word LTTE which without any exception is on the lips of every Sinhalese because it has been instilled in you.
    But I take issue with you and say to you that LTTE was a creation of terror by you lot ( I don’t mean you personally) starting from the Independence. We make no apologies for fighting to stay alive.
    Even though there is a euphoria post MR don’t forget the Majority Sinhalese voted for MR which is worrying.

      Need a change in majority understanding,
      Im not defending every act of LTTE, however i could’t agree with the idea (majority of majority have) that LTTE was the worse terrorist. Tamils are being subjected to worse government terrorism since independence. Since the invention of word ‘terrorism’ any act of fight for rights against the governments are being called terrorism to silence them. These truths were systematically denied by all the previous governments. If they still trying to paint it as just terrorism there isn’t much hope for a solution for the ethnic issues.

      We need more people to look at the bigger picture.

    You are doing proud to your mother Lanka and to your fellow citizens and ex- citizens who left their motherland on sad notes
    Excellent piece short and to the point covering the historical background.

    DJ, HLDM, Domyin , Shenali and the likes will be furious reading your above piece which has exposed them in many ways.

    I sincerely hope the progressive Members of the Sangha take the facts you have quoted and educate the innocent citizens who are being taken for a ride election after election using Sinhalese language and Buddhist religion are under threat. Further claim that they are the only patriots who are capable of ” Ratta Beraganeema “.

    Pivithuru Heta for all the communities within a united SL through justice and equality.

    Every sentence written has a meaning, and would be a pity if you missed the part “….it was our own, who perished for mistakes of your own political predecessors…”

    Attitudes like yours will make the reconciliation process, extremely difficult for the new political regime.

      you are right , it appears that Sinhala commentators, journalists, politicians, etc etc praise MR for defeating the Tigers, but they are still holding on to the tiger by the tail and cant let it go, thogh the tiger is dead.

      perhaps an tacit acknowledgement of the cause.

          Times are changing, perhaps DR’s mentors have lost out in the changes that are taking place in this island. She has nothing to offer to the wider readership. Her services to old codgers may continue though its a shrinking market and its less portent now than a few years ago.

          When the Chinese naval submarine ‘Great Wall 329’ arrived at the Colombo Port, Mahinda Rajapaksa may have not dreamt that even his royal astrologer, Sumanadasa Abeygunawardene’s prediction may prove wrong about his victory. Also, having declared a presidential election and when he travelled to Lord Venkateswara Temple, India, Mahinda may not have felt that the correct Temple to worship was the Temple at South Block, New Delhi. Be that as it may, Mahinda’s destiny was not changed by Maithripala who had hoppers and left him, but by the Chinese submarine ‘Great Wall 329’.
          When the first Chinese submarine came to Colombo, India summoned then Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to New Delhi. Gotabhaya was told that the presence of Chinese submarines was a threat to India’s security. But Gotabhaya decided to ignore the Indian advice. ‘Great Wall 329’ was the second Chinese submarine. India lost cool. When Indian Premier, Narendra Modi, met Mahinda in Nepal at the SAARC Summit, he issued the ‘Red Notice’.

          Mahinda placed his faith in his son, the crown prince Namal’s Indian friends. So Mahinda thought that Bollywood Star Salman Khan who topped Namal’s list of Indian friends could change Modi’s mind. ‘Indian intelligence misleads Modi. Namal has close relations with those close to Modi. Namal is beautifully handling the side of Modi’, Mahinda told those who warned him about India and Mahinda asked what could India do against him? That was the substance of what Mahinda told those who inquired about the Indian stance on Sri Lanka. As Indian foreign policy analysts believed that after the LTTE was crushed India lost her grip over Sri Lanka, Mahinda may have had thought on those lines.

          The Rajapaksa’s thought: “India cannot pressurize us because the LTTE is no more. But we have the Chinese card to pressurize India”. China took advantage of that situation not knowing much about Sri Lankan politics. China thought that Rajapaksas’ who won the LTTE war could not be defeated by the opposition. China’s relations with the opposition in Sri Lanka were limited. China did not wish to distance Rajapaksa and get close to the opposition. During the Uva provincial elections, Chinese President Jin Ping arrived in Colombo to strengthen the Rajapaksas’ and offered funds to provide economic relief to the people.

          India viewed those developments with anxiety. India knew the ground politics of Sri Lanka for decades. The Sri Lankan opposition had close links with India. Moreover, it is India who holds the key to pressurize minority political parties here. In contrast, the Rajapaksas’ behaved in a manner where they ignored the fact of the rights of the minorities too contribute at elections to elect a president. From 2005, the deciding factor to elect a president was in the hands of the Sinhala Buddhist population. The Sinhala Buddhists were with Mahinda. Hence it was difficult to break that grip. However, with the exit of Maithripala, the scenario changed. Thus, the opportunity fell into the laps of the minorities.

          Mahinda was defeated on 8 January. Mahinda’s defeat is viewed by India as a defeat of China and a victory for India. Mahinda lost due to the strength of the minorities. It has also enhanced the scope for India to gain an upper hand over Sri Lanka, after the LTTE was crushed. The Chinese “String of Pearls” are scattered across the ocean. Rajapaksas’ may be feeling that they pinched the “Sleeping Giant’ (India). This is a good lesson for decades to come, not only for Sri Lanka, but also for other leaders in South Asia.

              My Elders have been warning these two peoples (stupid Tamils & stupid Sinhalese) for many years. I made comments based on their understanding of events taking place in and around this island. I did comment here in CT, Tamil Canadian, Transcurrent, DBS Jeyaraj for many years. These people need bit of wisdom to understand regional geo-politics.

              The Tamils, Sinhalese and other analyst have been scare mongering for quite sometime. This would boost arms sales in South Asia and kickbacks to the brokers, bureaucrats, top men (always men) in the armed forces, politicians, etc.

              Those LTTE rumps believe China’s involvement in Sri Lanka would teach Hindians a lesson. Sinhala/Buddhists believed China would not only protect Sri Lanka but Rajapakse clan as well.

              MY Elders believe China threat if at all real and imminent its Hndia’s problem and not a Islander’s problem.

              They are always right.

              The choice of Tamil Eelam, Eelam, Peelam, Sinhala Eelam, Sri Lanka, Sinhala/Buddhist country will always be enforced by Hindians on this island.

    Sharmini, you have written it all very clearly,most of which I do agree.One facet of MR’s down fall is, becoming greedy of the so called 2/3rds mejority or power that he wanted at whatever cost. all the undesierables were bought over for this purpose at any cost! Assumed a mithical title of a king! You MR was considered so briefly soon after the war was over!There after MR never let that position go, instead clung to it in the most undemocratic ways.Forgot that there are others aspiring to become patriots! You got surrounded by the most undesierables who made use of your position.One such moron tied a government servant to a tree!!! On your account some became drug lords, PM’S office issued a letter to release a container load of heroin!One was illegally importing ethanol!, One in Negambo smugeles heroin mid sea!     Dear Kali,

    You are right, the LTTE was born out of frustration upon frustration flowing from a series of broken promises to the Tamils by Sinhala leaders. That said, your confession that ‘We make no apologies for fighting to stay alive’ is not something that most Tamils (including myself) will agree with. No self respecting Tamil can condone the barbaric massacre of civilians, including unarmed women and innocent children by the LTTE. Whatever the provocation, these are not actions that a cultured community would indulge in. I wish I had had the courage to shout this from the rooftop two decades ago; if I had done so, who knows, Sri Lanka may have been spared hundreds of thousands of innocent lives.

    Wake up for most SL politicians to reality. Bring back ethics, unbiased expertise, professional civic society, freedom of expression, multi-cultural harmony, distributions of democracy to poor masses, micro financial independence to poor, finally have a true feedback loop form by not ‘quacks’ but true professionals from broad spectrum of community located N to S, and W to E.

    That is a brilliant “send off party” note; perhaps he could have been
    advised to climb on his roof top and cry for mercy from the Gods
    of Budhists,Hindus, Muslims & Christians for having permitted the
    killing of those who surrendered with White Flags, reportedly after
    his promise that they would not be harmed, and even tolerated the
    murdering of a kid after feeding him – may be, just because he was Prabakaran’s son, yet claiming there was zero casualty!

    I think you have used the word ‘phobia’ (noun. an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something) in the wrong context. e.g. [quote]After the “We Won the War” phobia devoured you[end quote]

    I think you meant “We Won the War” mania (noun. mental illness marked by periods of great excitement, euphoria, delusions, and overactivity) or “We Won the War” euphoria (noun. a feeling or state of intense excitement and happiness)

    Issue with regards to Tamil expectation since independence is that, Various Tamil politicians wanted to follow the Indian Tamil political agenda at that time, driven by sush issues as Hindi as national language, fear of discrimination and political domination by the North Indians. Where the Tamils wanted England’s dominion over southern India the Madrass presidency, in order to insulate Tamiks from Indianisation. Cunning old mahatma got in to the act and shifted the Tamil conscience from India to Sri Lanka. Their is the cause of the current problem with the Tamil minds.
    Tamils are still going to the west with tears of unfair play, forgetting all bombs, mass shooting etc. over 30 yrs. Only fixated on the last stages of the war, where defeat was brutal and unforgiving. The west’s preparedness to accept the Tamil side of the storey, as the West knows that the Tamil issue if kept warm, they may have a lever to effect Indian politics.

    This “ordinary” President hasn’t said anything about the White Vans, which was the main battle cry of Ms Serasinghe and her anti Buddhist Brigades who waged the biggest Crusade against the rural Siinhala Buddhist inhabitant population,since the British , Dutch and the Portugese in the 2500 history of this small nation.

    I have been prompted by CT Monitor ( I dont know who that is ) to read the Article as I may have done you an injustice with my comments to your reference to LTTE.
    Let me give you my take on the Article in its entirity.

    1) On 19 November 2005, when you Mr. Percy Mahendra (Mahinda) Rajapaksa, assumed the mantle of the 6th Executive President of Sri Lanka, many of us, including diehard UNP supporters, hailed you as a true son of the soil, who would finally make things right, for our country. Such was the hope we optimists, had in you.

    *** I find the above truly shocking coming from a person who I thought was a woman of Compassion with a Human touch especially when you made an appeal on behalf of a Tamil Lady to which I contributed generously.
    You made this assessment of MR in the absence of any proven record of any achivement beneficial to humanity except his pledge to wipe out our freedom fighters. This puts you firmly in the 20 million Racist stockpile.

    2)But you seemed to get it right eventually, though rather clumsily.

    *** I take it that you mean he wiped out out Freedom Fighters but in the process killed thousands of innocent Tamils who were herdered into safe heavens and indiscriminately shelled causing terrible carnage. What a nice choice of words ( clumsily) from the Director of Peace Secretariat

    3) When you did, what all of your predecessor didn’t have it in them to do; give full freedom to the three armed forces, to rid the country of the LTTE menace, the masses bowed to you, with gratitude and relief. Hence, you shall forever be remembered, as the leader who set us free, from a ruthless terrorist outfit!

    *** I take issue with the above and ask you who created the LTTE and without the help of traitor India MR wouldnt have defeated the LTTE. Give full freedom to the three armed forces to rid the country of LTTE meance by stuffing the barbaric soldiers with drugs to get them into a rage and sacrifice thousands in the process.

    4) As our President Maithripala Sirisena mentioned in his address to the nation, this country needs an ordinary man to serve its people, as its ‘Chief Servant’, NOT a King!

    9) Had 51.3% of our people not stood their ground on the 8th of January, 2015, we would have been looking at another protracted war, this time on ethno- religious grounds, of mind- boggling dimensions.

    *** A correction. 51.3% of Sinhalese did stand their ground and it was only the Tamil vote which dethroned King.

    10) Somarama did, to Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike?

    ***This is the problem facing MS if he tries to solve the Ethnic problem. History has taught us why Somara killed SWRD and the same bullet will finsih MS off if he tries to dvolve power to Tamils.

    11) Any leader, who remains too long at the helm, like you did Mr. Rajapaksa, loses touch with the common man and his woes. And this is precisely what happened to you.

    *** No you are wrong and if not for the Tamil vote MR will stiil be at the Helm.

    12) You got used to, and took for granted, the ‘good life’ at the top, and all the pampered glory that went with it. You appeared not to give two hoots, for what the ordinary man who voted you in, was enduring. These ‘mundane’ issues appeared to bother you, only when an election was round the corner. What hypocrisy!

    *** I am not sure if I agree with as 51% still remember MR and his cronies as Liberators.

    13) Had you been a true Buddhist leader, you would have shown some compassion and sensitivity, towards all those fellow Sri Lankans, who gave life and limb to make this so called ‘victory’ possible. After all, it was our own, who perished for mistakes of your own political predecessors, and not an unwelcome foreign invader!

    *** I find the above an insult coming from a Director of Peace Secretariat singling out the butchers ( Barbaric soldiers who shelled 140,000 innocent civilians albeit acting under orders ) for praise without a word about those who perished due to shelling who are our Kith and Kins.

    15) But no, instead you had to ‘celebrate’ this so called ‘Victory Day’, in the most crass and tasteless way possible, with such pomp and pageantry.

    *** Are you saying with the passage of time the celebration should have been scaled down. I dont see anything wrong with celebrating in 2009 and 2014. A victory is a victory and and do you think scaling down would have lessen the Tamil misery.

    16) You ignored the God-given opportunity to do right by the Tamil community of this country. Instead, you went on to divide the Sinhalese and Muslims as well. What were you hoping to gain, by kindling and keeping the embers of disharmony among the populace, glowing and alive?.

    *** I reluctantly agree with the above but after glorifying the achievements of your armed forces it is too little too late.

    17) Now that you have time on your hands, Mr. Rajapaksa, I sincerely hope you will find it in you, to repent all the wrongs you permitted to happen, under your leadership; especially, the ‘white-vanning’, disappearances and murder of so many of our fourth-estate, disliked by you or your cohort of stooges.

    I also sincerely hope, you now realise, that no matter how many Gods you bribe, candles you light, coconuts you break, barks of Bo trees you kiss, and thingamabobs you clasp in your hand, when ‘Karma’ dictates “It’s time to go”, you have no option, but GO!

          Kali; It is not only Sinhalese who are Racists. There was a movement in the mid 1930s called ‘We Tamils’ which tried to prove that Tamils were superior to the Sinhalese. This was a time when the British ruled Sri Lanka.

          Another Movement called ‘Catholic Action’ also led by Tamil speaking people, tried to influence the then ruling British.

          SWRDB was influenced by these attitudes.

    There is a lot of Euphoria mostly among the Majority (who are few and far between) that somehow the Sinhala Nation has come to its senses and realised that they inflicted a lot of damage to the Social cohesion. Those believers are getting carried away in the hope that the Sinhalese hatred towards the Tamils will go away overnight. I respect those believers and genuinely hope that they are proved right but I am a relist and have my doubts. The reasons are as follows.

    1) 51.3 % of the Sinhalese voted for MR and that means for business as usual.
    2) If we are going to find an internal solution to the 64 year old Ethnic Strife we have to have consensus among the Majority. I don’t mean just thin wafer thin majority but a substantial majority. We don’t have even a wafer thin majority for that willingness to grant Tamils even the bare minimum.
    3) I keep saying that MS was part of the Evil Empire but that is true and leopard doesn’t change its spots easily and even if MS wanted to change he wont be allowed and he will be bumped off.
    4) There was nothing in the manifesto about Tamil Rights and how is MS going to implement such a contentious issue when the Manifesto was devoid of even a mention.
    5) Just imagine that MS finally decides to settle the Tamil issue. Will he simply go ahead and grant it and if so how would the 51.3 % of those who voted for no change react.
    Let me tell you we will have Race riots on the street which will make earlier riots look puni.
    Will he resign and go before the people for a mandate. The question is will the majority vote for it and judging by the recent poll is that realistic. I would say if he did that it will bring back MR without the need for the Tamil vote.

    So my question to those (CT Monitor,Plato, Confucius Naughty Boy) who are up in arms and brand me as the Stumbling Block to the path of Reconciliation I how do you intend to achieve your aims.
    I am not looking for just a simple ” oh yes don’t worry it is going to happen”

    For my part we have suffered for 64 long years and I lost three members of my family and I am not prepared to trust the Majority any more to deliver and that will only happen with outside help.

Contrary to what you claim the Tamils were prepared to move FORWARD and that is why despite any concrete evidence they voted for MS by an overwhelming majority for change.     Reading the above comments it is obvious that Sharmini has a big fan club and that is not surprising. But we are driven by our courage of conviction and are not prepared to be side tracked. We have not given MS an open Cheque and we expect him to deliver and we have plan “B” unlike MR who it seems is heading to Welikada before HAGUE. AG has ordered a probe to look into the Coup Plot.

    The majority of the majority have voted for status quo. This would mean that the Racist Singhalese are prepared to gloss over the misdeeds of the Rajapakse clan, essentially dismantling Democracy, as long as the Tamils are kept depraved. Yes, MS has an uphill task if, indeed, he and his new found friends want to mend matters on both counts, in the interest of the country’s progress and redemption from its international Paraya status.
    Neither India nor China had any part to play in the poll outcome. Well let us be reminded that Mr. Modi had wished for MR to be returned to power and what for ? God only knows; perhaps an affinity rooted in the Gujerat Politician’s past.
