The Return Of The Vans (“White” And Otherwise!)

By Emil van der Poorten

Emil van der Poorten

Since the recent return of my political analyses to print and electronic publication, it seems that the operators of passenger transportation vehicles of a particular description have begun to take an interest in where I live and the access to our home. Whether that is meant to be a “shot across the bows” in anticipation of a return of a new Rajapaksa regime or whether it was something more serious and sinister, I’ll leave up to the reader to decide.

Anyone, who has ever had the misfortune to try to navigate our +/- two kilometer approach road off one of Sri Lanka’s primary highways connecting the capitals of the Central and North-Western provinces can, I am sure, provide a graphic enough description of such an adventure without my assistance. Suffice it to say that it is not a journey lightly undertaken despite the wonderful view down the valley of the North Western Province once you reach your destination!

Anyway, the kadey karaya at the bottom of the hill of whom the request for access information was made was sufficiently unnerved that he neglected to note the licence plate number of the vehicle or even its colour.  Either that or he thought it might be best to give me the least possible information so as to safeguard his own interests while providing a minimum of the same commodity to mine!

The scenario sounded all too familiar and seemed to live up to the old adage about history repeating itself, first as farce and then as tragedy. One can but hope that, in this instance at least, the latter part does not hold true for us!

This little episode is probably symptomatic of what awaits us with the impending removal of the monumental incompetence of the current regime whose level of corruption was only exceeded by their predecessors who now promise to be their successors!  The emergence of a “new world order,” if I might be permitted to use that hackneyed term, that exceeds even the gross corruption of its predecessor, only seems to encourage the rape and pillage of what little is left of economies such as ours.

The newest development in that succession of events is the attempt by those on the cusp of losing their place at the table seeking to negotiate a division of the material falling off that table that will give them as big a part of the dross as possible. I do not pen those words lightly but with what is before us in seemingly plain view.

Interestingly, the Sri Lankan nation has retained a significant part of its abhorrence of corruption, threat and criminality. How else can one explain the unprecedented multitude that turned out on Galle Face not so long to express its feelings?

I “missed” the second Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) insurrection but experienced enough of the first to appreciate the fact that spontaneous combustion, no matter with or without a veneer of sophisticated conduct, is not enough, by itself, to effect change of any consequence.  All that came out of the first insurrection was the stupidity of Hector Kobbekaduwa’s “Land reform” that devastated – there is no other word for it – productive land in the mid-country of Sri Lanka. It was a knee-jerk reaction by a man of low intelligence and even lower moral and ethical standards that led to that calamity and its continuing fallout from which we are never likely to recover.

What is in our immediate future with the prospect of a return of the Rajapaksa hegemony is even worse.  We don’t have before us the resources that the Kobbedakuwa sycophants had available to them to plunder.  What awaits us is the kind of rape and plunder that we have traditionally sneered at in the “banana republics” and large swathes of Africa.  Since the gold is not going to be available for plunder, insatiable greed is going to be exercised in even more cruel and irrational forms.

Like the man said, “Be afraid, be very afraid….!”

I have it from a reliable source that the compulsive abductor has decided to use beige colour vans for his future operations after he is installed in power. Preparations are already underway and a long hit list is being compiled. He has his own way of restoring law and order.

roses are red ,violets are blue,i’d get into the van,if i was you.

during gota’s time a guy’s wife was taken by a white van.During yahapalanaya he found a white van tailing him and took off at full throttle at 160 kmh and got caughtby police for speeding. He told the officer there was a white van and that’s why he was speeding. The officer said “don’t you realise you donkey that this is now sirisena’s yahapalanaya and no more kidnappings”.The man said “yes,i know that, but knowing sirisena the firelighter i thought he was returning my wife”.

So he “missed” the second Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) insurrection……………..It explains why the killing fields of 87-89 appear so trivial to these buggers. Or the mortal fear a mere chit would create in a whole town in few minutes. Or the order given by the rathu sahodarayo to not lift coffins of their kills (of “enemies”) above knee level of the pall bearers. The current crop of JVP leaders were active members then and they know what they did.

      Hela:
I know what I experienced at first hand in 1971 and there are people who survived that terrible period in Sri Lanka’s history who can confirm those experiences. Trivializing human rights abuses simply by comparing them to other atrocities says more about the “theoreticians” than the occurrences. Why don’t you draw comparisons between Attila the Hun, Hitler and Mussolini while you are about it? Would be great for obfuscation, don’t you think? By the way, are you aware of the suppression of census figures that followed the 1971 insurrection that showed a net population loss in certain parts of Sri Lanka where the JVP was active?
Sneering hardly fills the bill when it is human suffering and terror that we are talking about. And making totally unsubstantiated accusations of my trivializing terror and killing is a cheap way of dodging the issues. Hiding under a pseudonym hardly helps the perpetrators of that kind of calumny, in case you didn’t notice.

        Emil,

No need to get upset………I merely pointed out things that you guys conveniently “miss”. While both 1971 and 1987-89 were terrible episodes there were some noticeable differences which you guys again tend to “miss”. One was the sheer difference in scale in deaths and it’s brutality by both state aligned forces and JVP and it’s affiliates. 1971 govt was at least law abiding to the point not to kill the arrested leadership of JVP while the UNP govt of 87-89 era captured and summarily killed the entire leadership (except Somawansa who escaped with the help of a govt minister). Rohana Wijeweera was said to be burned while he was still alive. 1971 govt punished the JVP leadership through a trial process so they could live to carry out their “revolution” on another day. See what you have “missed”. The question is why you and your yahapalanista ilk repeatedly “miss” such things if they not trivial to you. One other point……..Your new found darlings of present day JVP leaders couldn’t even accept Rohana Wijeweera’s ashes collected and kept by the watcher of Borella cemetery. That is the extent to which they wanted to get rid of Rahana and their own past so that they can re-borne to take the masses on another ride with the help of yours truly Samanalee Fonsekas (I can picture drooling Sarath De Alwis….) and baila Sunils.

At least ONE of the reasons you have to resort to a pseudonym is because of your talent for lying, distorting and obfuscating.
As the pithy Sinhala saying has it, “Dhanno, dhanithi.”
Your prevarications don’t do anything to conceal the facts.

            Emil,

I provided specific points which is in public domain. Your generalised denials don’t wash up. It is better to keep quiet if you cannot logically counter. pseudonyms are perfectly acceptable in these forums. What matters is the content and their logic plus representation and acceptance of that logic in the larger community. So get over your fixation on names and concentrate on the content.

Cannot agree with you more. I was there and saw it all. JVP and AKD are yet to apologize to the people of SL. They are going about business as if all is forgotten. No one in their right mind should vote for JVP/AKD.

      You are imagining things.
Sinhala/Buddhists never threatened any living being nor killed anyone.
      You are lying.
It must be LTTE which did all the killing.
It must be propaganda of Tamil diaspora fake news published by foreign media in order to undermine/tarnish the Sinhala/Buddhists, Sinhala/Buddhist country, Sinhala/Buddhist …………..

        NV,

You seems to have got onto your own tail. My exchange with Emil was on JVP insurrections and nothing about LTTE led separatist terrorist campaign. We can re-visit it if you want. It is well known you and your fellow travellers have been propagating fake news and lies about the now discredited numbers killed especially during the last phase of the war. Familiarise yourself with the submissions of The Advisory Council to Paranagama Commission consisted of three international legal experts, Sir Desmond de Silva, QC. (UK) as Chairman, with Sir Geoffrey Nice QC. (UK) and David M. Crane (USA) if you don’t understand what is fake and what is not.

Incidentally, Great Britain does not have a reputation for dishing out knighthoods to “radicals” of any description in case you haven’t noticed!

Gayantha Karunatilake has admitted in the Parliament that there were no abductions reported between 2010 and 2015. According to Gevindu Kumaratunga who appeared in 360 degrees program in Derana TV on 26 August 2019 gave figures for disappearances under UNP Governments. The numbers are very high. These goons who keep on repeating the Mantra ‘White Vans White Vans’ do not talk about the record of UNP.
Anyone interested in numbers go to derana.tv and watch that program.

      Eagle Eye:
Abductions, disappearances & torture is unacceptable. Period. That said, watching Derana TV is akin to watching propaganda films from the Third Reich about Hitler. Are you honestly suggesting that you are unaware of the clear affiliation of Derana TV and whose candidacy they are actively supporting in any future elections?

Hector Kobbekaduwa is highly venerated in Lanka including an Institute after him. These show the stupidity of Lankans. I knew HK was of low intelligence but did not know he was also low on morals and ethics. Emil, please elaborate further.

Basically HK together with Sirima, NM and Colvin destroyed our plantation industry and economy.

      Abhaya:
Some of the rural folk in the mid-country of Sri Lanka are even worse off than they were half a century ago, something that must constitute a world record of some description.. But then how would one who doesn’t know what the hell he is talking about to begin with know of that tragic reality?
Incidentally, I don’t know of any of the Kobbekaduwa clan who are suffering from anything resembling economic deprivation. Not while serving as Provincial Governors, anyway!

        Emil

I fail to understand how getting land when you had none could make them worse off. I remember those times when the elite planters were screaming that the whole economy would be destroyed and no Sri Lanka tea etc . but that never really happened right? If you think the JVP was bad, to imagine if the JVP would have had real grass-root support. Sri Lanka would have had a Khmer rouge to deal with.

May be old uncle Hector saved yours and my hide?

          Abhaya:
I had the opportunity as a young person of knowing Hector Kobbekaduwa personally, particularly since he was a schoolmate of some of my uncles and used to spend time with them in their homes. Why don’t you drop in on me sometime and I will show you about 1500 acres of productive plantation land that is now covered by mana grass, where not one cocoa BEAN is harvested and where every tree that can be used for any purpose, firewood included, has been cut down.
You people who are either monumentally ignorant of the facts or choose to lie through their teeth become rather tiresome after a while.

    My Dear Emil V,

The white van story is not proven.
The ”yahapalanaya ” mob was in power for more than 4 years and they could not prove a thing.

However the Bond scam and the Easter Sunday bombings and the Grand betrayal to USA is happening in broad daylight.

I don’t think that the white van bullshit will hold water to save incompetent RANIL.

“The ”yahapalanaya ” mob was in power for more than 4 years and they could not prove a thing.”

The president wouldn’t let the investigators charge the crooks as the crooks are Ranavirus. How could any decent functionary function properly in a corrupt system of a failed state?

“However the Bond scam and the Easter Sunday bombings and the Grand betrayal to USA is happening in broad daylight.”

Of course it is a betrayal, an American first betrayed it in 2007, Gota signed the first deal as Defense Secretary.

“I don’t think that the white van bullshit will hold water to save incompetent RANIL.”

Were you living in planet Seth between 2005 and 2015?

Are you saying Ranil planted those Easter Bombs all at the same time?
Don’t expect first class services from failed state institutions.

      Wimpy Kid:
I certainly have not sought to defend the Yahapalanaya mob from the justified accusations of incompetence and corruption.
You say “The white van story is not proven.” Let every reader of CT judge the truth of your assertion, particular taking into consideration the fact that you and those who share your opinions consistently hide under the rocks of pseudonyms.
Incidentally, if/when your patrons come to power are you going to look for payments made out to the pseudonyms?

      • 1
        1

        Emil,
I am also not defending or white washing anybody.
The point I want to make is:
The so called yahapalanaya Govt came to power promising the people to bring a just Government.
If a serious breach of rule of law in the country has occurred that is “”abduction of civilians using white vans””.
4 years is a reasonable time period to bring the perpetrators to book – who ever they are.
Why has the present government failed to be accountable to the people who voted for them?
I am not accepting (Native V)s excuse of blaming MS and MS blaming Ranil.
If the two Omigos knew that they cannot deliver what the country mandated them to do – they should have dissolved parliament and gone for fresh elections within one year.
What did they do? – held on to power – serving themselves and not the people.
On top of that – the Ranil/ MS govt failed to investigate and bring the bond scam perpetrators to book conclusively, can you call this yahapalanaya?
No one can deny that when the yahapalanaya govt came to power the country enjoyed a safe environment and we experienced it first hand when shopping in Colombo Fort area.
There was ample warning to this Govt that Islamic terrorism was active in Sri Lanka – for the last 3 years – even laymen like us knew that, simply by reading the news. This govt did not take action and did not drive and motivate the security establishment to prevent the Easter Sunday tragedy.
Why_ They wanted to appease the Muslim elite- who had connections with the terrorist and enemies of the Nation.
The agreement that the previous govt had signed with US was a limited to 10 years with limited access to facilities in Sri Lanka , I don’t see any problem

      Wimpy Kid:
It was a man who probably figures in your pantheon of heroes, the late Richard Milhous Nixon, who was most famous for his direction to his subordinates: “Deny, deny, deny.” Fortunately, he didn’t have any white vans at his disposal unlike the “national heroes” you seek to defend!

    • 0
      0

      Wimpy Kid:
Denying white van abductions speaks for itself.
Even those to whom you stooge haven’t had the brass to deny that people were “disappeared.”
Apropos “betrayals to the USA,” would it be too much to ask you to check the fact that the significant document in that regard was signed by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa when he was Defence Secretary, particularly since that is a matter of documented record?. Sorry bud, but even though the man who should be your patron saint, Richard Nixon, was best known for his exhortation, “Deny, Deny, Deny” it ultimately didn’t even work for him.
Incidentally, this is not about Ranil Wickremesinghe who is proving the old JVP statement, “Unuth ekai, munuth ekai,” it’s about decency and the rule of law in Sri Lanka, factors that you CHOOSE to ignore.

Blind eagle, in one way you are right man. What does it matter, UNP or SLFP or JVP and Gotta or Maithri or DS or Banda or Sirima. They are all the same dogs with the same tricks. That is racism and destroy the minority not through merit but through thuggery and majoritarianism. And tragically the Westminster Parliamentary system that took away democracy 100%. Just see how that Muslim doctor was made a demon by Sinhala racist politicians, Buddist Monks and even an enlightened balu dostharara Jayasumana. Racists think that when Gotta come back he will provide one way transport in white vans only to Tamils and Muslims. But that is where they are wrong. When he comes it will be free ride for all. Anyone who does not agree will have the free ride. As I always say and believe is that the moronic sinhala racism only brought this country to such a tragic, chaotic, and an ungovernable end. Most of the racists who contribute to this forum too do not live here but have deserted their so-called maubima and having a good time on the charity of suddhas tax payers. Even the patriot Gotta’s family living in the US. Basil in the US. HLD and Blind Eagle in Aussie and then strangely they pass their old age writing racist comments. This is what we call “Kuveni’s Curse”.

    For heaven’s sake!
    /
2015 Yamapalana pushers, despite their hopeless failures and desperate situation they are in ,in relation to the coming election, are still trying to revive 2015 CIA concocted lies about a non existing ‘Bheeshanaya’ of the Rajapaksa family. Their cries of white vans were not backed by a single true incident, and their accusations of Thajudeen murder, after several exhumations, has disappeared like a ‘fart in the bath’. But these Nelsons are still screaming the same lie-based abuse.
    /
These ‘pendas’ need to realise that they have no goodwill (political or otherwise) left among the Sri lankan public and they will have to crawl under the rocks along Kandy Kurunegala road after the next election.
    /
They should prepare for the consequences of the upcoming revival of the land reform program (of Mrs B and Kobbekaduwa era) and foreigners to leave our soil.
    /
More than anything else, they should find the meaning of the word ‘shameless’ in a dictionary!

      Slayer Mark2,

In Jan 2015, Old King left even the slippers inside the Temple Tree House and ran. The Number one culprit in the country, Ranil W provided the Helicopter for that escape. They did not have time to clean the basement, so there were 1000 of documents and computers and printers and data bases left behind. Ranil, who took over the key, saved them so that he protects the Old Royals. Now he had CID to destroy all unsafe documents.

But if they come again this time, Country is at edge to bankrupt; and if they tell the people that if they didn’t get bread they can eat cake, then the rest of the victory celebrations will be inside the Bastille. There will be no way out for the Olds; even the Hangbangtota port will be closed for them. (Remember when Yahapalanaya bombed the Tamil Churches, American Navy came and waiting at the Hangbangtota?).

So don’t have the foolish idea of winning the election and ruling the land again.

If he bottom is itching for new seat, rub it on a concrete floor, so it needs not to take kicks latter.
(Don’ be that stupid; write something at least that would match your level of IQ)

Be careful, dear Emil. We live in a lawless land. The mass of the voting public is nothing but a bunch of fools with a short memory span. Add to that their inherent racial and religious prejudice. The Gangster family will
be voted in – by a large number. The people will lose most of their precious rights.
Pol Pot’s Kampuchea, Mugabe’s Zimbabwe will be nothing compared to what we are
in for. Within the next decade or so, SL will turn out into a battle-field with major players in the global scene physically present – no different to the fate that sunk
Beirut and Syria. Our Sinhala-Buddhist majority asked for it. I am naturally sorry for the millions of good innocents who will eventually suffer for the folly of living with near troglodytes.

    Backlash,

don’t worry about this forthcoming backlash. It is karmic cycle. I agree majority of the majority race are innocent but they have to pay for the minority’s karma. When Kuveni was betrayed, raped and murdered I knew this was coming. Smart arse HLD and Blind Eagle escaped the calamity. Kampuchea and Zimbabwe will be nothing compared to future Dukka Deepa. It will be chaotic. Markets will sell human flesh and minimas rolls, patty and cutlets. Every town and village will be governed by the White Van Authority. So let us watch the fun.

Ha..ha…this is after the Muslim Dosthara kathawa gone puss and even forgotten. Muslim dostharara kathawa exposed 100% the bankrupt policy of the racists and their cooked up ithihasa. Now coming to a Dhemalu dosthara. Guys before that first deal with that Sinhala balu dosthara and the mahanayaka and Beraya and Chandana. The guys have no end for their history making. So weapons found and what else found? Former JMO Colombo is a scapegoat just until the election is over ad KINK Family comes back to power. No end of Sri Lankan History.

The only politician comparable to Richard Nixon in Sri Lanka is Ranil Wickramesinghe.
Flanked by dodgy Arguna Mahendran. and Ravi Karunanayake the crooked accountant.

        Wimpy Kid:
Perhaps you’d care to comment on the FACT that when Mahinda Rajapaksa was in power and Ravi Karunanayake’s passport was impounded, Mr. Rajapaksa gave RK periodic special dispensations that permitted him to travel overseas.
These corrupt politicians will continue to scratch each other’s backs till the cows come home!
