The Sihalaramaya Syndrome

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“…superficial unity, which is the result of the denial or the sacrifice of differences”. – Tagore (The One Nationalist Party)

The regime reverted to business-as-usual literally on the day Navi Pillay left Sri Lanka.

The first salvo of lies against the UN High Commissioner Human Rights was fired, predictably, by the state-owned Sunday Observer: “UNHRC chief Navi Pillay’s request to pay a floral tribute during her recent visit to the North had been rejected by the government. Informed sources said that Pillay had initially informed of her desire to offer a floral tribute to the late LTTE terrorist leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran at a location in the North. However the Government had turned down Pillay’s request”[i].

The regime’s lie is characteristically inane, and obscenely so, given Ms. Pillay’s unequivocal criticism of the Tigers: “The LTTE was a murderous organisation that committed numerous crimes and destroyed many lives“. As Ms. Pillay explained,  “…when I go to a country, I like to honour the victims, all victims, victims of LTTE, soldiers, families…. I have done this, for instance, in Moscow, done this in Guatemala…. I thought that I could do it here….”[ii]

Protest outside the UN office in Colombo the day after by Buddhist monks who oppose Pillay’s visit – Photo AFP’s Ishara Kodikara/ Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Sri Lanka Facebook page

Not only did the regime prevent this humane gesture of reconciliation by threatening to cancel the entire Mullativu segment of Ms. Pillay’s visit; it concocted a tissue of lies about and around her request, just hours after the UNHRC Chief left the island.

In an interview given to the Foreign Editor of ‘The Australian’, Greg Sheridan[iii], President Mahinda Rajapaksa lamented, “I must admit we lost the propaganda battle. I must admit we lost that badly”[iv]. The Sunday Observer’s blatantly apocryphal tale about Ms. Pillay wanting to pay a floral tribute to Vellupillai Pirapaharan is an excellent indication of why the regime lost the ‘propaganda battle’ and ‘badly’ – and will continue to do so.

Ms Pillay is a South African Tamil of Indian origin. As she herself pointed out, she considers herself a South African and not a Tamil. She was a veteran of the anti-apartheid struggle. The first non-white woman to set up a legal practice in apartheid South Africa, she defended anti-apartheid activists, exposed the repressive deeds of the White Supremacist rulers and fought for the rights of the political prisoners in Robben Island (she advocated for Nelson Mandela). She was nominated by Nelson Mandela as a judge of the South African High Court at the end of the Apartheid era[v].

Regarding Ms Pillay as a Tamil is as ludicrously irrational as regarding Barack Obama as a Kenyan.

The Rajapaksas fail to accept or even perceive this reality for the same reason America’s ‘Birthers’ regard Mr. Obama as a non-American – racism. In Rajapaksa eyes anyone of Tamil origin anywhere in the world is nothing but a Tamil and, therefore, a real/potential Tigers. The Siblings fought the Fourth Eelam War – and are building peace – on the basis of this perniciously and dangerously erroneous belief.

The regime’s perception of Navi Pillay as a Tamil and therefore a Tiger is indicative of why a lasting peace and a genuine reconciliation will evadeSri Lankaso long as the Rajapaksas rule

A Divisive Peace

Around the time a mob of Sinhala-Buddhist thugs attacked the Grandpass mosque, a temple in Jaffna also came under attack. The name of this temple, set up by a Sinhala-Buddhist supremacist organisation under the patronage of the military, is symbolic of everything that is wrong in the Rajapaksa approach to peace – Sihalaramaya.

Sihalaramaya was reportedly a brainchild of Rev. Magalkande Sudantha Thero, the Convenor of the Sinhala Ravaya. This monk has been associated with a number of violently intolerant deeds, including the recent burning of a meat shop in Tangalle[vi]. According to an article in the Irida Divaina (of August 18th 2013, by Dinasena Ratugamage and appropriately captioned ‘Inane Piety which creates Religious Wars’), Sinhala Ravaya has ‘resettled’ several Sinhala-Buddhist families in Navakkuli, Jaffna. The temple was built allegedly for these resettled families. At the time of the attack there was only one monk in the temple.

Sihalaramaya is one of the many temples built in the North, post-war. In the absence of a civilian population of Buddhists to provide for their needs, these temples and the few monks residing in them become totally dependent on the military for everything. This dependent relationship would cause the temples to be perceived by many a Tamil as yet another alien institution managed by the military, a symbol of an oppressive and unjust status quo.

As the writer very correctly points out, building temples in areas devoid of civilian Buddhists is not a recipe for peace but one for a new religious conflict.

No one could have ‘resettled’ Sinhala-Buddhist families and built a temple in the North without Rajapaksa blessing. The Sinhala Ravaya would have received the go ahead for this divisive move because it accords perfectly with the Rajapaksa idea of peace and nation-building.

In a post-civil war/insurgency situation, political leaders can opt to build national cohesion either through inclusive or exclusionary means. The inclusive way involves political and socio-economic reforms which create a sense of belonging in the hitherto marginalised/alienated segments. The exclusionary way is to focus on the identity of the dominant group (ethnic/religious/class/caste) and to create a cohesiveness based not on a balanced commonality of interest but on the fear of the ‘Alien Other’.

It is the second – exclusionary way – the Rajapaksas have opted for. The Lankan nation the Rajapaksas talk about is no more real than the LTTE’s ‘Tamil speaking people’. That wholly imaginary concept was based on the subsuming of Muslim identity and the denial – and indeed criminalisation – of Muslim interests. It led to not to Tamil-Muslim harmony but to Tamil-Muslim enmity. Similarly the Lankan nation advocated by the Rajapaksas will cause not ethnic reconciliation but new, and deadlier, faultlines in an already fissured land.

Imagine what would have happened in the post-Insurgency South, if the Premadasa administration believed the power hunger of the JVP to be the sole cause of the insurgency, refused to admit the existence of any systemic errors or injustices, discounted the need for radical reforms and opted for a policy of achieving systemic stability via extraordinary security measures, leavened by a modicum of physical infrastructural development[vii].

What if the government suspected every Sinhala youth from subaltern castes of harbouring anti-systemic yearnings and treated them as real/potential subversives to be either punished/kept under surveillance?  What if those villages in the Deep Southwhich were once under de facto JVP control were turned into garrisoned territory? What if President Premadasa did not believe that an ‘unjust system’ produced the JVP, and consequently, refused to implement ‘a whole package of policies’ to ‘radically’ change the status quo?[viii]

South would have become increasingly militarised. There may have been stability for a while, but this superficial quietitude would have been bought at an increasingly unaffordable price, both financial and socio-political.

The refusal to allow even the UNHRC Chief to mourn all the war-dead, the existence of a temple called Sihalaramaya in Jaffna and the assault on it by an unknown entity indicate why under Rajapaksa rule hatred will not die and violence will proliferate.

[iii] As stated at the end of the piece, Mr. Sheridan was in Sri Lanka as the guest of the Rajapaksa administration. In choosing Mr. Sheridan for this role, the regime acted cleverly. Mr. Sheridan is known for his reactionary stances; he supported Suharto, opposed Obama at the 2008 election and believes that history will judge George W Bush to be a great leader. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/a-great-president-for-these-terrible-times/story-e6frg6v6-1111112208118

[vii] “Let us look at the events of ’88-’89. What we saw in Sri Lanka was an attempted revolution backed up by an incredible and unparalleled brutality and a counterrevolution of almost equal ferocity… But while we deplore the violence, there is no point in being moralistic and judgemental, of one side or the other. Rather, it is for us the living to understand the causes, the underlying causes, and work towards their removal. It is not for us to point fingers or to score cheap debating points. Rather it is for us see that we pull together to eliminate for all time the roots – the political, the social, the economic, the cultural and indeed the spiritual roots – that brought forth the terror. Let us not forget that the dead and the living have been alike, often helpless victims of forces far beyond their capacity to control” (Ranasinghe Premadasa – A Charter for Democracy).

[viii] “This package of policies is aimed at confronting poverty and alienation directly. We cannot wait for the benefits of growth to trickle down. The Janasaviya programme is one of our main instruments for this purpose… We are planning to implement the majority of recommendations of the Youth Commission Report…. We have decided to implement 43 of the 51 recommendations straightaway. We are also breaking down the barriers between the administration and the people through our policy of Presidential Mobile Service…” (ibid).

This reminds me a script for a stage drama some people wrote recently:

    The actors were King Kekille (KK), Henchman-1 (H1), H2, H3, State media man-1 (SM1), SM2, a UN official (UNO).

KK: Hey, H1, remember your son got caught in a bad case and I got the anti-narcotics to forget it?
H1: Oh, yes KK, thank you very much for that. I will never forget such favors.
KK: You know what? I cannot sleep these days. A UN official is visiting to talk to citizens?
    H1: So what?
KK: So what? scratch your dumb brain a little more! Can’t you see that the peaceful society is going to wake up and talk?
H1: Ok, I know what to do. We should call an immediate meeting of more H’s and SMs. We will share work. if you need mud, we will supply in tons!
KK: Ok, kata kata! You can’t spill a word about this outside!

UNO: Your excellency, KK, I had a very busy but a productive time in your country. I saw a lot of new constructions in the flooded areas. But I have to caution you that people affected by floods need not only new bridges, but also their washed out lands too. True, the deed documents were lost in the flood, but there should be secondary mechanisms to honor their land rights.
KK: Who told you that my H3 and bros grabbed their lands?
UNO: Ah, that is news to me. And, I have to caution about some wildly inaccurate and offensive statements made by your H’s in the cabinet and some SMs. Aren’t those remarks indecent?
KK: Oh, I don’t know about SM’s because there is unconditional media freedom in this country. Regarding the H’s in the cabinet, I do apologize. You know, I have a very diverse cabinet with diverse views. Sometimes when one thinks this is reasonable, somebody else thinks it is crap. Often crap gets majority vote. See?
UNO: I do understand. But I will raise these concerns within UN too.

Why did you take a Muslim name? You don’t want to disgrace your Sinhala-Buddhist brand ha? But Buddhism teaches to be mindful. You sometimes forget your fake identity and write – Leela at the end of comments. Just a kind advice to be a bit more honest.

WHY cant you accept that SL is a Sinhala Buddhist country ? Just like Malaysia which is a Malay muslim country or Indonesia Pakistan, Afganistan . Even better the UK is a Christian British Country . France is for the French . Germany for the Germans . Italy for the Italians . The middle East for the Muslims . Get real ,face facts and not try to instil your distorted views on the gullible and naïve . OR are you trying to mimic the fashionable views of the COLOMBIANS ????DID you not hear David Cameron say that the UK is a Christian country but they will not undermine other religions . Or do you dispute David Cameron as well. ?

sarojini, srilanka minus the jaffna kingdom is okay to be called sinhala bhuddhist.Bring it back to what it was before colonialism and call it what you will.If you are incorporating the jaffna kingdom now into srilanka then you can’t call it sinhala bhuddhist anymore. The choice is yours.Like south sudan and turkish cyprus separate it and have your share and call it what you want.

You cant have the cake and eat it too.If you want the jaffna kingdom of the hindu tamils then yu can’t call this a sinhala bhuddhist country. If you don’t want it give it back and come to an arrangement where the people of jaffna ancestry are all sent back to it and call the srilanka minus the north a sinhala bhuddist country.Remember when you give it back you will lose control of the vital palk strait. If i was sinhalese i would be happy to have the present arrangement and call this country a sinhala, tamil and muslim country where we all can live as brothers and sisters and our only identity is srilankan.

No need of all this unnecessary ethnic and religious crap titles which are tearing the country apart.

“WHY cant you accept that SL is a Sinhala Buddhist country”

The SL constitution does not say so. The SL history book Mahavamsa does not say so. The Sri Lankan people (except a few Sinhala-Buddhists racists) do not say so.

Sinhala came from India, Buddhism came from India. Do you have any valid evidence to prove that SL is a Sinhala Buddhist country?

Just because the Sinhala Buddhists are more in number (majority), that does not mean that the country is exclusively for them (sole owners).

Sri Lanka does not belong to Sinhala Buddhists. It belongs to all the people who choose to live there.

The SinhalaBuddhist is the ONLY race in this entire world that believes the majority race in a country are the sole owners of the country and all others (minorities) are aliens. No wonder the Suddhas called Modayas.

MR prop machine regularly churns out that there is no one but MR to lead Lanka, this has not worked as most you speak with in Lanka including villages close to Colombo have realized the real MR.
They also know that electoral fraud (count)is at play.

How does one beat electoral fraud? Register and turn out to vote in large numbers, live screens must display count at counting centers and the tally district, islandwide should be live on TV,electoral monitors should not only be at booth but in regional centres and Rajagiriya.

Majority Lankans, armed forces, civil service too have their own minds and know a complete change is important.
Greg Sheridan after he was purchased wrote a seriously biased, one sided story re boat issue that he may even put Rajpal to shame.GS was purchased and flown to Lanka as damage control for human smuggling side business.
Kids growing up now see their president meeting Gadfly, Musaveni,Swazi King,Belarus man…that’s the quality compared to Sir J,Mrs B,JR,RP,CBK meeting real world leaders and would never have touched these despots.

Monks on this photograph are an absolute disgrace to Buddhism.

They should disrobe themselves. Leave Buddhist monkhood.

See the rulers would accuse these monks and army soldiers in the weliweriya incident in which forces took the lives of several youth injuring dozens. But the environments should be made clear for them not to grow their aggressions is the resposibility of the rulers. So long ignorance and indiffernce is filled in the minds of rulers, nothing can help us bring forward. These are single persons that should be warned and even need rehabilitated. Gota macro brains seem to have overseen this sofar, if his brain according to the masses of the country should be most fit to safegurad the security in the country today.

      Ben Hurling,

“Monks on this photograph are an absolute disgrace to Buddhism.”

      “Leave Buddhism to Buddhists. Period.”

According to Theravada Buddhism, thee is the Triple Gem

First Gem, the Buddha, the Founder of Buddhism

The Second Gem, The Teachings, The Dhamma, in the Pipitaka

The Third Gem, The Sangha, The Monks. The Monk Hegemony.

Ben, you mean to say that the Sangha, should leave Buddhism and let it be a Double Gem?

The Buddha and The Teachings? Absolutely. The Monks appointed themselves, as the Third Gem, like the Pope and Dick Cheney.

      You have my Vote.

The Catholic Church used to have 7 Sacraments. After Martin Luther, the Protestants had only 2 Sacraments.

Theravada Buddhism needs reformation to take care of Monk Hegemony and Racism.

Need a Martin Luther of Buddhism.

        Correction,Typo

        “The Dhamma, in the Pipitaka”

The Dhamma, in the Tipitaka, the Triple Basket.

The Tipitaka (Pali ti, “three,” + pitaka, “baskets”), or Pali canon, is the collection of primary Pali language texts which form the doctrinal foundation of Theravada Buddhism. The Tipitaka and the paracanonical Pali texts (commentaries, chronicles, etc.) together constitute the complete body of classical Theravada texts.

Add to this the oft heard and repeated Sri Lankan Buddhist stanza, ‘Dhana, Sila, Bhavana.’ What the monks have put first in the heirarchy of importance is ‘Dhana’. All else is secondary.

We already have a Martin Luther king. Unfortunately he have passed away. According to him Sanga is people who follow the Dharma not the monks who is portrayed in this pictures.
The people who are portrayed in this picture a Thugs with a Uniform(yellow robe).
I am by birth is Jaffna Tamil and believer of Real Sinhala Buddhism which was preached by Most Venerable Kotte Devanda Maha Thero.
If anyone interested please Google the above name and listen to my teachers dharma explanations. You will be so Pleasantly surprised for the Buddhist explanations.

Sinhala Child Monks-the underage poor Sinhala village boys, too young to understand religion or politics are being coerced into joining the Sinhala Buddhist chauvinist sects. Animal sacrifice is cruel but let us save the children before saving the Goats.

Slaughtering animals in the Temples for religious purposes is cruel and primitive, so is the dedication of young children to the Temples, monasteries, and religious sects. When they can`t even decide what to eat, how can they decide whether they want to become a monk or a layman. Isn’t is more primitive and cruel? The Buddhist Sri Lanka`s political leaders must pay attention to this and stop this sordid practice.

The child monks are torn away from their poor Sinhala Buddhist parents by radical Buddhist sects to serve as foot soldiers in their attempt to foist Sinhala chauvinism upon the country. Rampant Buddhism, violent and self-seeking political monks have been the bane of Sri Lankan politics. The politicians promoting child monk recruitment have not set an example by being ordained themselves or having their own children or grandchildren ordained.

Let us Stop the child abuse and save the poor Sinhala children before saving a bunch of goats from a function once a year.

Firstly, these monks (yak, scary looking devil dancers, mean is more than written on this guys face!) should be rehabilitated with the LTTE terrorists.. at least the remnants of them still in rehab. Secondly, the power hungry and selfish fascists that leverage these monkeys should be put out of business..whether impeechang or external intervention or a simply hi-tech drone operation from an aircraft carrier miles away..

In a country where ants and cows are not killed .. human blood is shed at the order of some minister or family business… or after a bottle of gal arrack… killing the last known terrorists.. i.e. the ones in the top rung of power does not really matter… the country needs peace that badly… and its fate both social and economic needs that bad a desperate rescue!!

The belligerent look on the face of the the monk in the foreground is frightening.
So much hate in a disciple of The Buddha is unbecoming – are these young monks being taught to hate minority groups?
The lakehouse papers appear to be promoting such hate.
The Buddha never ordered his disciples to build temples in his name and worship him.
He only wanted them to follow his teachings.

These kind of monks should be subjected to therapies. Authorities should take these issues serious and provide them with anti-aggresssion therapies. Germans provide trainings while the prisoners keeping in prisons. So, the same trainings we should learn from developed world through diplomatic channels. So long the rulers and their authorities would not make genuine efforts in this regards, criminal energies of this mind sets would go up exponentially. Accusing the monk on the pic is not fair because his capacity should be low as the monk who burned himself on last vesak day of the country as human sacrifice could stop the cattle slaughter in the country.

5 years ago, there were no enough IT personnels to some countries in Europe. But within the following years, they changed the system providing more placements students to study the subjects. Now they dont want to hire anyone out of Europe. See, in the same manner, if no enough, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists is the case, they the rulers have to invest no for night car races or any recreational parks, but for the mentioned areas. How can one expect from the rulers – that would intend to invest more in Education to do so is the key question here ?

So long Criminal minded ruling bunch are in power, nothing like reduction of crimes will be the case. That is for sure.

The point was to point out that:

          1. The Monks are there to protect the regime, the Maras whether they the Regime is at fault or not from the UNHCR and not about the country or the people.

          2. They are using Buddhism to do that, and the respect of the Sangha, the so-called Triple Gem, to do that and making a mockery of the enlightened Buddhas teachings.

This is not Buddhism. This is Mara-ism, Devil-ism, Satanism.

The education they got was Sinhala Theravada Buddhist Racism- the Curse of Lanka.

Lanka would have been better being Jain ot Hindu, (like Bali , Indonesia.)

“Pillay had initially informed of her desire to offer a floral tribute to the late LTTE terrorist leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran at a location in the North” If you will forgive me, Tisaranee, this is not true and can be highly inflammatory. As she explained before she left,
in other theatres of conflict (Guatemala, Rwanda) she visited on official duty she played floral tributes to those who perished in those conflicts. Her good intention, as she maintains, was to remember the soldiers, civilians and the militants who perished. She let her intention known to GoSL authorities in advance. The moment she found the situation different here and can be cause for unnecessary tension, she respected the stance of the local authorities. Let us be fair by her.

She was quoting what the Sunday Ovserver said- she wasn’t saying that as part of her own opinion.

I’m afraid, Senguttuvan, that the company of such illiterates like JimS and leela are making you jump to conclusions without reading the articles in question…

So far,no tributes – floral or oral – to thousands of JVP youth killed in cold blood by the police and army.
Now the Matale skeletons have revived their memories & the issue is being ignored & buried, as Gota was the commander in the region of the ‘disappearances’.
We are a nation which kills our own youth who rebel against injustices.
We even kill prisoners who protest against ill-treatment – the report is slowly being ‘buried’.
No other nation has done killings on such massive scale.
Now another “dummy” commission has been installed to probe “disapparances” – only because of UN insistence.

The picture says it all. Vituperative hatred far from the teachings of the Buddha. Religon being transformed into a vehicle of hate and terrorism by the the so called custodians and teachers, the Taliban of Sri Lanka.

    Premadasa greatest prime minister
As presidentbrutal to the rural youth
    JVP uprising a class struggle
    Castes were on both sides
    Premadasa is the best example

Child ordination helps create these monks
It is often not the calm and docile that is sent away to the temple

Premadasa presided over one of the most brutaly repressive periods of modern Sri Lanka. The current UNP leadership of Batalanda fame is part of that legacy. However no one has been called to account for that brutality. Pillai’s of our time never talk about it though she is willing to spend a disproportionate amount of time and energy (based on her own account) to punish those who hurt her kith. There are hugely more pressing HR issues all over the world that demand immediate & deeper attention of UNHRC though powerful members of that council would be more than happy for the head of the organisation to spend her time on a largely peaceful situation.

That is so true rot in the island started with Premadasas. But don’t you think ,even he looks like a saint compared to this lot?

At least the present lot stopped the massive scale of deaths & destruction that was going on for 30 years.

Of course Premadasa getting Air Lanka to fly to Fukuoka in order to deliver his in-laws flowers may be trivial to the scale what’s occuring now.

I am Catholic and have a deep respect for Buddhism. I have met many monks on my travels to remote villages in the south who were full of love and compassion. The monks in the photo look so full of hate, are these the kind of people that the ‘Sinhalese Buddhists’ want to be represented by? Religious extremists of any stripe should be crushed like cockroaches because they harm and discredit their respective religions.

Most Europeans and West Asians have about 2% Neanderthal and about 1.5% Denisovan Genes. Please do not curse the forefathers.

“I am Catholic and have a deep respect for Buddhism. :

Very good. You perhaps understand Buddhism and Understand Catholicism more than many Buddhists and Monks do.

Unfortunately a good number of these Buddhist Monks do not understand Buddhism, Theravada or Mahayana, and they are just for the ride, because they were pushed to be Monks when they were little, just like what many other religions do.

The problem lies with the system. They should be made to make a decision when they are 21.

After all the Enlightened Buddha was 29, when he decided to be an Ascetic.

A picture saying a thousand words. Anger, being a self imposed altered state of mind, has no one else to be blamed but the perpetrators themselves. It is unfortunate that a lot of misguided youth monks of this country are being brainwashed with wrong or maligned information, and are sent to the forefront to stage their protests and vent their vengeance in public. We have already witnessed too many pictures of well fed, healthy specimens of marauding monks, which depict them in various poses in state of anger. Far from the calm, serene and harmless Buddhist monk we all know and love to respect. This is now the new face of Buddhism seen thru hate, anger and contempt. We can only expect this phenomenon to get much worse if nothing is done to arrest it now,

The monk in the picture is a sexually abused kid who is depending on someone else for his meals and abode…So, he has to sing for his survival. At least he is trim and muscular compared to the pot bellied bretheren of his.

All I could say is Rajapakses are producing the next Generation of Buddhist Talibans an Al Quedas in Sri Lanka.

These samll Samaneras are being brainwashed, abused and manupulated by these BBS, Rawaya,Ravana Balakaya Monks to be extrimists and Racists with the blessings of Rajapakses.

    groundviews.org/2013/08/27/ravana-balaya-uses-children-in-protest

First of all 99% of these Buddhist Samanera children are mere “Economic Refugees” who are from poor families whose parents have the next best choice available after either send them to an Orphanage or to send them to a Buddhist Aramaya….now a “Madrasa” to become Buddhist Monks while they get all the free meals, Board and Lodging, free education, health benefits scholarships and all other perks and benefits.

According to Higher Education minister 80% of these Samaneras Leave their Robes after Graduation from a university with a hatred towards society…….and these are the left over uneducated, unqualified brainwashed fanatic extremists who are been used by Rakapakses to hate the society for their political agendas.

Lord Buddha changed his life to be a monk only after “Sasara kalakirila” means after seen the sorrows of life, he started looking for enlightenement and the result was Buddha.

Also he left his Palace crown (he was a king), his Princess, two children and his harem.

Therefore how come these seven year old children deciding to be Buddhist monks at this tender age of seven years other than mere economic Refugees now becomming Political Sinhala Buddhist Racist Talibans.

They are been brain washed, abused and taught hatered to be Extrimists who could become Terrorists later in life to be used by the vested interested Politicians like Rajapakses who use them to stay in power.

Rajapakse used these Brainwashed Buddhist Monk Racist Fanatics to stop Cattle slaughter, while monopolising the Beef industry in Sri Lanka.

Now Rajapakses are not only arresting people who are caught transportng cattle but also confiscating their cattle.

BUT THE CATTLE ARE BEEN SLAUGHTERED INSIDE SELECTED ARMY CAMPS AND DISTRIBUTED AMONG KNOWN CUSTOMERS BY RAJAPAKSE BEEF MAFIA. This is similar to Rajapakse’s monopolised Drugs, coacin, Ganga, Kasippu, casino and Brothel and Prostitution Mafia cartel.

Also Rajapakse used them to hit at Muslim communities and their churches and businesses, Christian communities and their churches….amd may be followed with Hindu community also.

Await for more Rajapakse instigated Buddhist Sharia Laws in Sri lanka similar to the one banning cattle slaughter while they monopolised Beef industry.

These misguided, misdirected, misled and mis-used Buddhist monks should be enlightened, educated and directed towards to be positive, loving and caring citizens by some educated, qualified and intelligent persons and organizations, so that they will be more worthwhile, more positive and more productive citizens to our cuntry.

And mind you there are around half a million saffron robed monks in this country today. All of whom will not bear legitimate children possible only through legal marriage. We already know that celibacy is not an option for most monks, since it involves self control, abstinence and suppression of carnal feelings, which are all natural processes taking place in our bodies all the time. It is genuinely impossible to avoid or neglect all instances of these naturally occurring human desires without committing sin. To add to it further, love, romance, sense of belonging, experience of a legitimate family union and socializing including its many social responsibilities, caring for off-springs are all self deprived or starved of to these monks, and they give sermons to lay people on the importance and goodness of holy matrimony, encourage the bearing more and more children, good family values and the whole gamut, without they having the license to set the good examples for others to follow. Makes no sense. Naturally their warped habits and abuse and criminal offenses committed against young students placed under their custody, including flings with those of opposite gender are quite high in this country, but never get reported nor investigated but simply swept under the carpet due to controlling powers of monk hegemony. Then what good can can we expect from them that could benefit this country, except thru lip service. One small thing and they fly into a rage, looking more and more incorrigible.

    Tisaranee,
Thank You for highlighting this unsavoury aspect of our present state.
Alas, this evil genie has escaped from the bottle with a little help from our political friends from the deep south who hope that the ensuing chaos and confusion can be controlled to their advantage. The whole sordid state is a disgrace to decent buddhists and buddhism and does no favour to Sri Lanka’s already tarnished image globally. While the ten percent of us who read the english media and internet will discern the damage, those who read the vernacular media would probably think all was sweet and light in the land of the dhammapada. The sad thing is that these evil people, having been given their head will now not retreat until they have their biggest prize; a sinhala-buddhist hegemony. That, after all, is what the sinhala-buddhist army fought for and culminated in the buddhist flag flying high above Nandikadal lagoon.

What is the difference between child soldiers and these child monks???

Both are brain washed to hate. If you give a weapon to these child monks and tell them to kill the Muslims and Tamils they will do it without any hesitation.

The Sinhala-Buddhists are abusing Buddhism to the maximum. What will the non-Buddhists think about Buddhism? It is not a surprise if they call Buddhism Barbarism.

You are right, Sri Lanka is the only country in the world where Buddhism is abused to such a level (brought to the level of Barbarism) and that also by the so called Buddhist monks.
