The Soap Opera Unfolds

I suppose I should have used the local terminology, “teledrama,” rather than the Euro-American (and pejorative) term. However, I do believe that my choice is more reflective of the really nasty events that are beginning to unfold, complete with what appears to be maliciousness bordering on the psychopathic, seemingly balanced off by abject cowardice parading as “patience” and “adroit maneuvering.”

On a previous occasion I described how Gotabaya Rajapaksa was being accorded preferential treatment in the matter of interrogation by the Criminal Investigation Department who, rather than summon him to their offices as they would any ordinary Banda or Biso, were making house calls at his convenience.

Now, we have the spectacle of “special considerations” being accorded the self-same individual at the behest at no less a person than the Prime Minister of this country. If that worthy’s compass needed setting he had to look no further than Wijedasa Rajapakshe, one time Rajapaksa acolyte who bailed out, absolutely ignominiously, from the highest elected position in the BASL after his house was allegedly fired on and after what I distinctly remember was a personal “courtesy call” from Mahinda Rajapaksa. Wijedasa Rajapakshe and Lakshman Kiriella come bearing the same burden, both being old henchmen of Mahinda, who might have left his side but who obviously know on which side their bread is buttered: on both sides if they had their druthers! Both are now buying “insurance” from the Rajapaksa horde to cover any “adverse eventualities.” I have proof positive of Mr Kiriella buying his particular piece of “insurance” through a favour to a superannuated member of the soon-to-be-consummated dynastic coming together! As they say, “any port in a storm” and one takes one’s opportunities as they come along! It is now also very apparent that for reasons that have been documented by other writers to Colombo Telegraph and other publications not attached to the hind teat of whichever group happens to be in power (and that likely to succeed it, too) that circumstantial evidence points to the Prime Minister being complicit in this enterprise.

Wijedasa

If that worthy’s compass needed setting he had to look no further than Wijedasa Rajapakshe, one time Rajapaksa acolyte who bailed out, absolutely ignominiously, from the highest elected position in the BASL after his house was allegedly fired on and after what I distinctly remember was a personal “courtesy call” from Mahinda Rajapaksa.

These are simply opportunistic and abject cowards – from “leader” to common-or-garden “foot soldiers” – parading as political strategists, feathering their own nests at the expense of those who put them in power in the expectation of Justitia omnibus. As each day passes, their colours are becoming more evident to anyone pretending to anything resembling grey matter in their cranial cavity. One doesn’t need to go far back in time for examples of those who, in one breath, denounced some political leader and the next moment was seen in that very person’s fond embrace, literally! Remember the ranting and raving of, first, Johnston Fernando and then Dayasiri Jayasekera against Mahinda Rajapaksa, the former even being accused of plotting to take the then-President’s life! Remember what they did next? If you don’t, remember where they still are, perhaps, pending another migration into the embrace of some other leader capable of handing out something “suitable!”

One can but hope that the Sujeewa Senasinghes and Harin Fernandos of the United National Party display some of the intestinal fortitude that they have already given evidence of possessing and raise the concerns of the people of this country within their party circles because if that doesn’t happen and the inevitable denouement follows, the Rajapaksa horde will not extend to them anything like the courtesies that their self-appointed “seniors” are extending to those who raped and pillaged this country.

Many of us have already been accused of impatience in the matter of holding to the fire the feet of those who claimed to be ready to remove from the body politic all that the Rajapaksa regime stood for. Considering the escalation of pandering to the law-breakers and the unbelievable equivocating that is unfolding before our very eyes, we should have been even harder on our “saviours” in the hope that they wouldn’t betray us. Many of my friends lapse into “didn’t I tell you so?” every time I cross their paths and I have to admit that the term “chagrined” comes to mind when I am confronted with what they keep reminding me of.

However, in practical terms, the Ranil/Maithripala duo are the only game in town for the foreseeable future and we need to do everything in our power to ensure that, even if they aren’t progressing at the speed they promised at the inception, that they don’t deviate from the promised path. NOTHING LESS WILL SUFFICE. They have begun to provide us with pretty substantial evidence of their capacity to betray us and every man, woman and child with expectations that justice, civility and decency were to prevail after the Rajapaksas were sent packing has just cause to complain. To suggest that they are doing us some kind of “favour” by mouthing platitudes while pandering to the very people they were mandated to remove from the day to day affairs and governance of this country is beyond ludicrous! If they haven’t got the cojones to do what needs to be done or if they feel that it would pay them better NOT to fulfill the people’s mandate they should, in the name of God, GO! If they refuse to do what they promised to do they should be REMOVED and the sooner the better.

The irony of the Kiriellas, Vasantha Senanayakes, Navin Dissanayakes and Wijedasa Rajapakshes pandering to the Medamulana Mafia (MM) is that the MM didn’t think them fit to hold anything resembling important (and lucrative?) office when awarding such positions was not only in the jurisdiction of the MM but exercised more than freely insofar as people of that ilk were concerned! 0ne form of “justice” one might see in the event of a return to power of Mahinda Rajapaksa and co. would be these purchasers being left out in the cold or, at best, being tolerated no further than the Rajapaksa pilikanne! That would be rich indeed!

    Emil van der Poorten –

    RE: The Soap Opera Unfolds

Thanks for the write up. Expose, expose and expose.

“On a previous occasion I described how Gotabaya Rajapaksa was being accorded preferential treatment in the matter of interrogation by the Criminal Investigation Department who, rather than summon him to their offices as they would any ordinary Banda or Biso, were making house calls at his convenience.”

Why did not they send a White Van for Gotabaya Rajapaksa ? Are they Cowards?

“Now, we have the spectacle of “special considerations” being accorded the self-same individual at the behest at no less a person than the Prime Minister of this country. If that worthy’s compass needed setting he had to look no further than Wijedasa Rajapakshe, one time Rajapaksa acolyte who bailed out, absolutely ignominiously, from the highest elected position in the BASL after his house was allegedly fired on and after what I distinctly remember was a personal “courtesy call” from Mahinda Rajapaksa.”

So Ranil Wickramasinghe ia a COWARD? The Data Supports That? No Backbone. We need Sarath Fonseka or the JVP.

    So Nothing Happens.

Emil – I have to agree on the gist of where you’re coming from. Kiriella seems to put his foot in it nearly every time he opens his mouth. Ranil has made what has turned out to be some disastrous appointments – Mahendran for one, and some of those so-called ‘ministers’ as well. Maithri will have to put his foot down with some force if he wants his ‘Palanaya’ to live up to expectations.

For sure ‘due process’ will take time if we are not to go the way of the previous regime, but surely, there is enough evidence to charge individuals for some of the felonies they committed when ‘in power’? Why not, is the question most of us are asking. So the possibilities of what you postulate that “…These are simply opportunistic and abject cowards …… feathering their own nests at the expense of those who put them in power in the expectation of Justitia omnibus”, are well founded.

Let’s hope whatever ‘investigations’ are going on, some positive results will result SOON!

Too bad Emil, looks like there won’t be an end anytime soon to your fight for good governance. The new regime is proving to be not the ideal rulers you were hoping for. I’m pretty sure they are going to keep you busy as ever rather than let you enjoy your morning bliss …… a nice cup of coffee, watching marvelous news on TV. No rest for the wicked, eh?

Mr Sirisena should keep in mind that Maithriya is a means to an end – in this case to clean up Sri Lankan Politics – not an end in itself. If he thinks it is, then he should transfer the Government into more appropriate hands, and enter the priesthood.

In an Article today in CT, Jagath Asoka wrote “I would say to Mangala Samaraweera, if you cannot take any action, just shut up. People are getting tired of empty rhetoric. Forget about locating billions, just find some coconuts stolen by them and then prosecute them.”

People are getting tired and restless. If Mr Maithripala’s inaction continues he and Ranil are going to be dumped at the next elections. The minorities, if they find they are once again being denied justice, will see to it the duo are dumped. After that Mahinda Rajapaksa will ensure both of them are debowelled and cremated. And they would have deserved it.

Advise to Maithripala Sirisena: Immediately charge the Medamulana Mafia for “stealing coconuts”, keep them in remand prison, buy time for professionally investigating the bigger crimes, make sure they go to jail for ever. Ranil and Maithri should realize, that in addition to serving the interest of the country, they are also saving their own lives.

Emil. did you expect anything else.Ravaya carried a comment on them ie MR and RW which when translated meant that they have the same roots. This had been the bane of Sri lanka, they scratch each other’s back, forgetting the voter. The voter – the two legged grass eaters end up eating more grass.

With S.B.Dissanayake and Vijayamuni Soysa joining the cabinet Mithripala Sirisena’s yahapalanaya is fast becoming a yakapalanaya. Very soon we are going to see an uprising similar to what we saw in the middle east.

On another point, I was shocked to see the interview in Ceylon Today where the former minister of sports Mahinda Aluthgamage, the “paga king” has condemned the present minister of sports Navin Dissanayake. At least if Mahinda is a honest person he should have known that the present minister is not stealing from the sports ministry. What right has Mahinda Aluthgamage got to condemn the present minister. All Sri Lankans knew how Mahinda got to wear Gucci shoes!

“They have begun to provide us with pretty substantial evidence of their capacity to betray us”

This all began with a betrayal – what do you expect? At least Ranil has been true to his party, and has held power all this time. And we know what he wants and what he stands for.

As Maithripala Sirisena said in his election manifesto “there will always be corruption”. Looks like no “Mega Corruption” no “Mega Projects”
