The Turning Point: Opposition On The Offensive

Nov 16th 2021 was the current Opposition’s equivalent of the Feb 18th 2015 Nugegoda rally of the pro-Mahinda JO forces, but Nov 16th 2021 was more impressive and significant.

Feb 18th 2015 was most striking because of its unprecedentedly rapid turnaround time after the January 2015 defeat.

Though it took far longer due to Covid-19, the SJB demonstration of November 16th 2021 was a more crucial turning point.

It is the day the democratic Opposition went on the offensive. It is the day that hope was reborn in the ranks of society as a whole. The same was true of Feb 18th 2015 in its time and I wrote as much, but the first factor that makes things radically different today is the depth and extent of the national crisis, economic and social.

Thus, the significance and potential of the SJB manifestation is qualitatively greater. It can be the spark that ignites the process culminating, through many intermediate, even dangerous phases, in a democratic transition if not transformation.

There is a second factor that makes Nov 16th 2021 more important. It is the size and extent of the protest, counting the significant numbers that were prevented by the state from coming to Colombo.

The third factor that makes it more significant than even Feb 18th 2015, is the sheer scale of blocking by the regime, which was not the case in 2015.

The SJB’s ‘smart’ demonstration of November 16 in Colombo, the unplanned local protests at every venue that the prospective marchers were stopped by the Police (500 roadblocks, reported The Island), the sizzling speech by Sajith at the edge of Galle Face proved that this was the indispensable formation in the democratic Opposition; the indispensable leading force and main force of the Opposition.

At the political level the competition is now indubitably between the SLPP and the SJB. The SLPP regards its main challenger for power as the SJB, or more accurately, Sajith’s SJB.

The Nov 16th events set an example of resistance to the general public, the entire country. Sajith’s Galle Face speech had a simple message: “Enough of this curse…we are committed to forming a government of the people (‘podujana aanduwak’)”.

It constituted a declaration, echoed in parliament the next day by SJB general-secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, that the SJB was determined to evict the government through people’s power direct action and elections.

What does Nov 16th mean further afield? For the JVP it means that either a broad bloc is necessary with the SJB or competition must be stepped up in the struggle to change the administration.

The JVP, though far more powerful in the mobilization of social forces, especially the unionized of town and country, is far more vulnerable on its own than is the SJB which has political real estate.

It seems to be solely the pathological sectarianism of the JVP’s leader that forestalls, possibly forecloses, a united front with the SJB.

The SLFP will have to decide whether it can go it on its own, or stay within the government and survive electorally, or join the SJB as a junior partner of a centrist convergence.

The SLFP surely has to abandon any hope of overtaking the SJB.

What is true of the SLFP is truer still of the smaller parties of the ruling coalition. Can they stay in government and avoid the fate of the LSSP-CPSL in 1977? Can they move out and survive at the next election? Can they enter a bloc with the JVP?

Or, would it not be most prudent for the smaller allies of the SLPP to form a united front with the SLFP under the latter’s leadership and then enter negotiations with Sajith and the SJB?

The United National Party (UNP) has been totally replaced and superseded by the SJB. It

has no realistic option but to dump its eternal leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, pick someone willing to work with Sajith and under his leadership, and either join the SJB or enter a united front with it as a (very) junior partner.

The civil society intelligentsia must realize that none of its formulae so far, which do not recognize the central role of the SJB and the leadership of Sajith Premadasa, are relevant. Re-thinking is on the agenda.

Left-oriented civil society intellectuals must learn that if they truly stand for a progressive outcome they must constructively engage with the SJB and nudge it leftwards, strengthening, inter alia, the populist centrism of Sajith Premadasa.

Liberal-cosmopolitan civil society must realize that its values can only be realized by acknowledging that the dominant discourse will always be that of Sajith Premadasa as expressed at Galle Face on November 16th: a ‘Podujana Aanduwa’; a government of the common people, the masses.

    Time for the opposition parties to get their act together and try to stop what will otherwise be a family dictatorship. People are finally opening their eyes, and realizing that the criminals behind the Easter day bombings were not only these idiot Jihadists, but there were others with their own agenda behind that terrible massacre. They also realize now that racism is a tool used by this regime, to divide the country, and set the majority against the minority, and that pardoned felons, murderers, corrupt cronies, and war criminals, cannot run a country successfully with the best interests of the people, but only for themselves. We were bombarded with information about corruption with the previous regime, but this one is worse, considering the nepotism going on in the leadership. How many more off shore bank accounts have been opened since they took over? It would be interesting to know.

    They are also realizing that the man they thought was their savior, because he ended a war (and accused of war crimes), has made blunder after blunder, all at the expense of the people. They have even sold chunks of our land to China. How patriotic is that Sinha Le?

      It is good if Tamil politicians in the North take note of this. They have been fooling the Tamil community in Yapanaya for a long time. But situation is changing. It is becoming harder for Tamil politicians to fool the Tamil community all the time.

          Nimal, isn’t it pity that a street protest is now the glimmer of hope to starving Lankans. DJ is writing as though it’s a cards/ sports game where strategically teaming up to get back to the top. In that case he admits there is no principle or manifesto as such to any political party other than teaming up to retain power. No doubt Rajapaksas have to go, but isn’t it a repetition since independence. Lankans pick absolute crooks so that losers get together in unseating the don to continue the same. Who ever get elected its those same crooks hold position. As DJ says if they get together and dethrone the naked king there will be tussle to get positions, intermittent theatrics to pull the rug by those dissatisfied lot, power struggle, infighting and holding government for ransom. We are aware what and all RW did to see SP loose election. With such voter mentality there is no hope or recovery for a failed nation.

        Only solution is to give Tamils their own country, give Sinhalese their own country and give Muslims their own country in the island.

        Until then SL will be a mess.

        If it is a presidential election, TNA and SLMC will definitely support SJB. That means most Sinhalese will oppose SJB. That’s the end of the SJB’s power even if it wins because TNA always contests alone at the parliamentary election. What happened in 2015 will happen.

        The other side is worse. Because TNA and SLMC supports SJB, most Sri Lankans will have no option than to support useless, racist, corrupt Rajapaksas. In another few years they will topple the SJB regime and grab back power.

        The same old story of SL. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

        One island, three nations. Sinhala Only Elam, Muslim Elam and Tamil Elam!

      I cannot understand why some people say “………. he ended a war….”. He was just the Supplies Officer who robbed state funds during that time. It is true that one of his stooges wrote a book named “Gota’s War”. Should not also forget how he left the Army and the Country long before the actual battle started.

No doubt, if a diplomatic position would be offered to you tomorrow ´, you would not think twice, but pack your bag and leave to Russia or Europe. So what is the difference between you and the vulnerable voters in this country ? You would forget almost your parents, if any interviewer would put you above ” as most experienced diplomat in recent times bla bla ” but to get in to their bang wagon filled with various kinds of racists. All these are becoming clear to all today.
      Your inconsistent behaviour should also be responsible for the fall of this nation. Mahinda Rajapkashe should nt have been kept above to the manner you did it then. He is just an actor, not taking things seriously.

    None of the regimes that ruled this country used racism to set the majority against minorities.
    Racism is the tool used by V-Tamil politicians in Yapanaya from the time Sinhalayo gained independence to prevent unity between Tamil and Sinhala communities for their political survival. They gave the impression to Tamils in Yapanaya that Sinhalayo are their arch enemy and they are their saviors. Even now some Tamil politicians use anti-Sinhala racism to hang on to power.

    Sri Lanka is facing a bleak/uncertain future. The military regime of Gotabaya will survive because the army has to survive as well, like what is happening in Burma. The Rajapakse family cannot let a new regime take over. The coming dictatorship will last as no other country or UN are bothered.
    Sri Lankans are not welcome in other countries too.
    The rot commenced with “Sinhala Only” and now it is “Rajapakses only”
    More unnecessary projects on borrowed funds will sink the economy soon.
    There will be hunger and unemployment of the majority.

      Justice, Sri Lanka is nothing like Burma which has been under military rule since independence. SL has a long history of democratic elections, although many were flawed. GR and the Rajapaksas know very well that the will of the majority cannot be supressed with guns. It was the majority that brought them to power and it is the majority that will get rid of them when the time comes.

      Rajapakshes are not the ‘Podu Sathura’ – ‘Common enemy’. They are the ‘Sathura’ (enemy) of Tamil terrorists who massacred Sinhala Buddhists for three decades in order to grab land belong to indigenous Sinhalayo to create a separate State for the Dravidians brought to Yapanaya by Portuguese and Dutch because they had the spine to stand against the deadliest terrorists in the world (Tamils) and eliminate them.
      For indigenous Sinhalayo they are heroes because they defeated LTTE Tamil terrorists and unified the country. Sinhalayo will not chase them from the country because, unlike Tamils they are grateful to leaders who brought them peace.

    Dayan is reading too much in to the rally. The rally was a pro-test march, not a pro-SJB march. There can never be a government of the people, with leaders like Sajith.

    The protesters were rallying to remonstrate their opposition to the burden dumped on their shoulders by the current regime, not to demand that democracy be upheld.

    It will take several elections before our Democracy gets legs to stand on!

Then a man with teeny behaviour s , his record breaking high crime acts, Gota became the Fuehrer. If bugger gave priority to discussions before his issue of Gazette s, they would have been powerful but all of them were reversed sofar. Majority in the country would nt care much about when they cast their votes, even rapists, motherfuckers could well hide behind Sanga costume for any low doings.a Hypocrisy and stupidity would nt leave them even if we would keep on dreaming. South asian mentality will work like an incurable cancer in them for another few decades so long main stream media would nt take it serious.               Abhiseka s videos are good. But Sepal s sounds as if he is ” siyalla dhath – know-all nature”. So I dont respect any of them. If I had time, I would have spoken with a cross section of the hell, during my last stay, however, it was not easy.

              Sorry, it was not my million dollar question, but just a pertinent one in today s context. Any polburuwa could easily get elected no matter who he is… if he would promise – a packet of rice along with a glass of arak, those Kadamandiya bps would become ” wine karapu ewun wage- uncontrolleble but slaves”. … Unawatuna area people are familar to me,because we had few hotels there – the owners being my relatives.

              Besides, very same SEPAL is totally against Ranil, yet today, but in the same time not yet a single word thrown against Mahinda- blood sucker of the nation… what do you make of this ?… That is why our ISKOLEMAHATHTHAYA (sinhala man) feels that SEPAL s nature is not yet clear.

              To be honest, I dont want to be pessimitic, but not the least sign there at the end of the tunnel, in terms of a better future. In the days to come world press will compare it with SOMALIANS and TAHITIANS. Not to every politicians but the curse should go to Medamulana BPs.

    That does not seem to be the case.
    No vision, mission or objective!

    I cannot contest the author’s comparison of the two public gatherings of Feb 18th of 2015 and November 16th of 2021 nor the issue of the use of Police, legitimate or otherwise. Sri Lankans always gloat at chasing away of an “undesirable” government to elect the significant “opposition” to power, only to say, “Our vote was wasted on another set of corrupt megalomaniacs who will make hay while the sun shines.” Who on earth expected “Bond-scams”, “Sugar daddies” and “Garlic daddies” after the respective elections? What is the cause? Those who are always happy with any government will sing the ballad “Politicians may come, and politicians may go but we the racketeers will go on forever.”. The key question that any political leader must ask himself or herself is how can I get rid of the racketeers? If the honest answer is “I have no answer to that issue” then whosoever political leader going on the street now is yet another humbug. The last paragraph addressing the Liberal-cosmopolitan civil society is interesting. On a sample basis their response was “does this fellow have that International recognition?”.

    JVP lost its way since joining the UNP in 2010 to support the common candidate. Dropped to just 3% and then even lower.

    This will prevent the JVP from joining SJB again unless it is a parliamentary election where SJB agrees to field as many JVPers with it. Can SJB do it like UPFA did in 2004 when JVP won 39 seats at the expense of the SLFP?

    SLFP and UNP are now dead.

    UNP must join SJB. The problem is SJB is a village party. UNP is a city/town party.

    SLFP must join JVP and other small parties to survive.

    Whatever happens the next parliament will be a hung parliament.

    Thero carried a major campaign for Ranil in 2014. Wrote many long uncalled consulting essays in CT that how to win Old King. In Feb 2015, he read Old King’s note in Narahenpita meeting, standing shoulder to shoulder with Muduthedu Vegama. Then he started to wind up Joint Comedy Club to break out from Yahapalanaya; he joined Ranil’s Club and went to Russia to drink all free Vodka. Then he and the New King started to cut the Branch they were sitting on; worked against the Yahapalanaya. It sounded like Thero lifting Ranil on the Papaya tree and pushing it down to fall with Ranil. I don’t know whether that was a blacksheep work or a sheepish job. Now neither Thero has his Russian job nor the New King has a minister post. Now, Thero is back again on the Drumstick Tree like the Vampire of Vikramaditya. This time he is clinking on the shoulders of Valaiththodam Jr, instead of Old King. Muduthadu is a VC. Alone without his partner, Thero still has turned around the Join Comedy Club. Working on Old King. Thero doesn’t control the parliamentary votes. It is always done by the Joint Comedy Club. Like in 2015 Old King, 2019 Ranil and New King, Thero is targeting Hitler King in the next election. Operations were always successful for Thero; but never Sinhala Buddhists survived after elections.

Because a set of morons who do not have any common sense decided to organize a protest bringing people from faraway places to Colombo while the country is grappling with a deadly pandemic. These guys ignored the health guidelines given by health experts. Only ‘Thanakola’ eating ‘Punnakku’ drinking voters will cast their votes to this kind of irresponsible people who put the lives of ordinary people as well as the whole country at risk to gain political advantage. These guys who talk about ‘Saapaya’ (Curse) have forgotten how they brought ‘Saapaya’ to this country when they were in power.
    Not only the guys who organized but those who decided to participate knowing the risk are also morons. May be lot of people took the risk and joined for a packet of rice and some ‘Gal’. If they thought in that line, it is a rational decision at a time food and liquor are so expensive.

      At least we didn’t have food shortage and starvation prospects under the previous regime whatever other bad outcomes the had to change!!!
      The problem enunciated recently, by the president, “YOU CHASE US AWAY AND ELECT THOSE WHOM YOU DISCARDED, AGAIN”, rings loud and clear, which is the manifestation of illogical use of franchise!!
      HE is absolutely right in that thought and bringing to the forefront the disastrous action of the SL voters, whether they are SB’s, Catholics, Muslims, Burghers, Malays and parses’ or Tamil background, not matter!!!
      The effect and outcome of “Bath Parcel and ¼ Gal Bottle influence” – the Common Factor (CF) on electors voting decision has been disaster!!!.
      This is not right and rational under any circumstances.

    There is a divine law by which every Country is goverened by and the Citizens are very much connected with it by their thoughts and actions.

    There is no truth in blaming Politicians.

    We need to think without prejudise and make known to politicians clearly that we need a governence that can provide equal opportunity to all citizens.

    While gauranting religous freedom to all, same should be granteed to those who do not agree with organized religions and athiests.

    We keep refusing to accept reality .

    Politicians fail to deliver because it is not possible to deliver to different demands of each Citizen’s personal wants and not needs , if its needs then it would be a basics needs common to all citizens .

    The moment I saw the headline and the author’s name, I knew how the article would end: “Make Sajith President”. What Dayan should also add is “Make me Minister of Foreign Affairs”. This is the man who read MR’s speech at Nugegoda, who went as Maitree’s Ambassador to Russia, the man who advised Maitree during the latter’s unconstitutional coup in 2018. SJB seniors should warn Sajith about Dayan.

    I have to talk about Buddhism and Buddhist people because they are the deciding people in this country. Buddhists think they are majority, so they they are special and they can decide what they want. So, what is the point in crying about turning points? Why the turning points?
    How many turning points Sri Lanka need to have to realise the what is true Buddhism and What is fake Buddhism? If you have a clear understanding of Buddhism you don’t need to wait for turning points. Frequent Turning points means you are confused about Buddhism and Buddhist leaders.
    Please understand those who are greedy of power and money cannot save Buddhism. There is no majority rule in Buddhism. Buddhism is sharing love and kindness.

      I wish to disagree, when you see the outcome of one such claimant’s performance up to now!
      We need:
      1. Just,
      2. Righteous (Not “Darmista” – it was disaster last time)
      3. Open minded and receptive towards public/electorate opinion
      4. Secular
      5. Benevolent, well educated, Intelligent/wise person
      6. Honest, Caring and Humane
      There is a dearth of such quality specific people in SL. True.
      We have at least, 3 years to the day (1095 days) of serious and persuasive search without any filibuster to accomplish this masterly deed!!
      ‘Are up to it’ is the million dollar question?
