The Unholy Alliance – A Threat To Maithri (Good) Governance

By Hilmy Ahamed

The call by the ex-socialist turned ultra capitalist, Wimal Weerawansa for an unholy alliance of the left to support the candidature of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to be the Prime Ministerial candidate at the next parliamentary elections could be the real threat to good governance and rule of law initiated by the MaithriRanil nexus to steer the country out of corruption, nepotism and all forms of misrule that existed during the last decade under the Rajapaksa regime. The threat could be real when one takes in to consideration the desperate predicament of some of Rajapaksa’s cronies in parliament, who may not even get nominations from the SLFP under a Maithri/Chandrika leadership. The need to safeguard their ill-gotten wealth is probably the cause for their strategic move to promote Mahinda Rajapaksa to the fore as a Sinhala Buddhist leader who would safeguard the interest of the Sinhalese. Sri Lankans are well aware of the antics of these corrupt and unethical political animals, and Mahinda too would be reluctant to gamble, knowing the possible outcome of another failure. The new guard SLFP would never want to go back to another Rajapaksa nepotism. The current opposition leader, Nimal Siripala de Silva has reached his dream position of heading the opposition and a possible Prime Ministerial candidature. He would not entertain any proposal that would drive him back to insignificance; So, Nimal Siripala would be Maithri-Ranil’s best bet to keep Rajapaksa in retirement at Medamulana. It is yet to be seen whether extremist Buddhist forces would attempt to bring Gotabaya Rajapaksa to the fore and continue their campaign of hate. Some of them have claimed in the past that they have selected their candidate to take over from Mahinda Rajapaksa. Could Gotabaya be the genie that would pop out of Aladdin’s lamp to save the Bodu Bala Sena and other extremists?

Gotabhaya with BBSThe leftist’s firebrands of Sri Lanka, who were once considered the custodians of good governance concepts have shed their red blood and infused themselves with dark blue. They see no evil or corruption amongst the Rajapaksa clan. They obviously are fighting for their political survival and seem to already miss the privileged perks enjoyed under the Rajapaksa regime. Opportunistic politicians of the caliber of Weerawansa could be expected to hide behind sheep’s skin, but the likes of Dinesh Gunawardena, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Tissa Vitarana and DEW Gunasekera are the biggest disappointment. These four real leftists were probably not corrupt; hence they may not posses the resources to retire and survive out of political office.

The huge public demand to fast-track investigations in to the corruption and misrule of the Rajapaksa regime is unprecedented, yet it is important to put in place mechanisms that would ensure that the Rajapaksa form of corruption would never be repeated in the country that our children would inherit. The Maithri-Ranil duo would have to quickly spring a surprise on the leftist nexus that is building up to pose a threat to the government’s commitment to democracy. It is time to confine these (former) firebrands into cold storage, forever. Failure would encourage racism and communalism to thrive as seen from their approach, including the remarks by President Mahinda Rajapaksa insinuating that this government is a proxy of Tamil/Minority separatist groups. This remark alone has rejuvenated the dying Bodu Bala Sena in to action.

The Bodu Bala Sena’s Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero’s attempts to forge an alliance with other Sinhala Buddhist forces including the Jathika Hela Urumaya should be a cause for concern to the Maithri-Ranil administration which is already showing signs of cracking. President Mahinda Rajapaksa probably would not touch them with a barge pole, as they were architects of his defeat at the Presidential elections of January 2015. The extremist Buddhist monk, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero and his compatriot and Chief Executive Officer of the Bodu Bala Sena, Dilanthe Withanage probably would have a place in history when narratives of the fall of the Rajapaksa empire is recorded.

Re-emergence of their hate campaign on the minorities, that was encouraged and allowed to be undertaken with impunity by the then Rajapaksa government would probably have no place under the Maithri-Ranil administration. The two leaders are fully aware that the single most important factor that made the Muslims and Christians to overwhelmingly vote against President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the violence and pogrom unleashed by the Bodu Bala Sena. The assumption of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa that he could win without minority votes that proved to be his downfall, would certainly be in the minds of Maithri and Ranil.

While corruption, nepotism and breakdown in law and order were of equal concern to all communities; the fear and helplessness experienced by the Muslim and Christian communities due to the intimidation of the Ven. Gnanasara’s clan cannot be expressed in mere words. Today, they are able to sleep in peace as the fear of powerful persons who were behind these extremists are no more. Their numerous attacks on the places of religious worship and businesses would not have gone unchallenged, if the minorities felt that they had recourse to justice. Further, their attempts on two occasions to invade and threaten Muslims in their own bastions of Grandpass and Slave Island would have caused a repeat of the 1983 rioting if not for the timely intervention of the Muslim religious, political and civil society leadership. The few who attacked could have been surrounded by thousands of Muslims who reside in these areas that could have caused another major blemish on Sri Lanka.

The Muslims and the Christian minorities voted for President Maithripala Sirisena in unprecedented numbers expecting him to re-establish the rule of law in the country and ensure peaceful co-existence. There were deep concern over the partnership of the Jathika Hela Urumaya in the coalition of the common candidate, but the stand taken by Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero and Ven. Sobitha Thero provided the necessary confidence for the minorities to stand by the common candidate. If only 200,000 voters from the Tamil, Muslim and Christian minorities had voted in favour of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the dreams and destiny of Maithri, Ranil and the country would have been shattered.

It is time that President Sirisena and Prime Minister comes out boldly and silences these anti-social elements who thrive on causing divisions between communities for their selfish motives and destroy the peace.

    Hello Himly,

Allow me to clarify one thing. BBS could not have had support of the Rajapaskes.

I say that with confidence because of a conversation that is said have taken place between Dr. R. Senaratne and M. Rajapaske to take BBS into police custody.

BBS like other crooks were simply a feature of Mahinda Rajapaske who thrived on impunity. What is special about BBS in particular Gnanasara is that he is not a regular miscreant.

There were more than one indication giving credence to an idea that BBS was an orchestration by some other party who exploited Mahinda’s flaw with law-and-order to undermine the guy.

Hilmy please refer to MR as Ex-President and NOT President R.

Second the parliament of Lanka is full of corrupt crooks who are not being investigated because Ranil wants the whole parliament to be the Govt.! This ia a very bad idea since we need
      1) clean government
      2) an opposition to provided CHECKS and BALANCED in the parliament which has a fair share of uneducated and corrupt thugs, criminals and morons!

Ranils idea is a far greater threat to good governance and democracy. Why has Duminda Silva and Mervin Silva not been arrested till now? Cos Ranil wants to be their Prime Minister!

Dinouk, as far as I know, we are expected to address them as president X, Y or Z. It is also the same with Ambassadors. We are expected to address them as Ambassador XYZ. If anyone knows better, I stand corrected.

Vibhushana , you must be living in another planet. The Rajapaksa’s were fully behind the BBS after the Norwegians funded them to take off. They realized that Gnansara had enough nuisance value to keep the Buddhists distracted by creating fear psychosis among them. When they were doing it fairly successfully, he wanted to extend it to garner the Buddhist vote. He got GOTA to do the dirty work.

Muslims and Christians of minority are vote for MS. He is elected by Tamils Muslims and Christian sectors, represtantitive of that vital interest of anti-democratic forces in Island.

But all Sri lankna minority elements must have of their own social roots; hence that irrespective of political, Racial, Ethical and Religion believed must which understood that Under the leadership President Mahinda Rajapakese had been liberated entire country from Terrorist clutches of Tamil-LTTE terror outfit. People of Islanders has been victims by Tamil-Terrorist more than 30 years during war against People of Sri lankans by Tamil political class.

Tamil genocide activities has been carry-out against Sinhalese Buddhist by LTTE in hidden & secret support by Tamil political class in North and Tamil diaspora in US Europe and UK.

During that time Muslim Congress of Hakim and All Sri lankn Muslim congress Party of Risadin Buddhudien gave their moral support to LTTE to killed Sinhalese Buddhist as much as possible in many parts of island.

We quite understand that how Muslims are allied with Tamil nationalist want root out to be eliminated Sinhalese Buddhist from ours inherited land and their civilization 2600 years by Tamil terrorist and Muslim jihadist living in this land.

Vasu was “yesterday’s discarded goods” from a long while ago.
He is finished and will never return to parliament, so he is making a last desperate fling; travelling hand in hand with unconcealed Sinhala racism in the name of fighting “imperialism and neo-liberalism”! It is beyond belief that this pantaloon can’t see what a spectacle of contempt he has become. Tissa is halfway down the same path; DEW is not far behind Tissa.

MR should form a 100% sinhalese buddhists party with hardliners who can make the lives of minorities miserable….they should take the country into absolute turmoil…then only sinhalese parayas who sold the country for minorities realise their fate…come on MR

Yes, and make the country another Zimbabwe. I think the african leaders were a lithe better tan our dictator Rajapaksa. See how that murderer Gota is even refusing to give a statement on his private armory both in land at sea. The government immediately has to take him in to custody and send him to the same cell as Sarth fonseka and this time around, make sure that he speaks and speaks about everything including the Duminda Silva’s drug carter, Dilith Jayaweera’s stock mafia, Johnstons illicit alcohol and the Ethonol kings

Hilmy, you are being compassionate to these bunch of rogues who stole everything possible from the country and people. The children considered everything around them including teenage girls as their property to do anything they want. There has never been photographs as we have seen of the royal brats. It is important that the young girls who were raped by these monsters are provided justice.

The current government and the president will learn their bitter lesson if relief is not provided for the Muslims and christians to live in peace without threats from Bodu Bala Sena and all the violent Buddhists. We have voted to have peace and if the ones who adorn the robe are allowed by this government too to act as thugs, we too will have to take the law in to our hands and deal with them. It wouldn’t take much to bring this street thug in the same style as he does

all people who support mahinda should understand one important thing.finishing LTTE in no way gives the immunity to plunder the country.
think of the ruthless misgovernance and family rule that followed the defeat. are you ready to forgive MR and his people for everything they have done. you will definitely ask for evidence etc. once it is given you can sat everything is cooked up then there is no end.tere were instances in history all crimes of worst criminal rulers were tolerated by a few people because of very crafty indoctrination. now see MF is getting isolated by his own party and people who benefitted by him. basil disappeared and SBD is hiding. WHY?

Hilmy, in all your writing, you are protecting the murderer Gota. He is responsible for the death of over 40,000 tamils during the final days of the war. He ordered the army to shoot surrendering LTTE cadres. He was responsible for the murder of many of your colleagues – journalists. He was responsible for the white van murders, above all, he was responsible for the tragedy that befell the Muslims, He was responsible for the destruction of many mosques. Yet, you defend him. WHY?WHY?WHY. Did he help you????

Fazeel, thank you for your comment and appreciate your concern. I have no political connections or do not benefit from any politicians. So, there is no need for any politician or politically powerful to help me as I have done nothing for them. I have met Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa many times on issues related to the Muslim community in Sri Lanka and he has helped the community on many occasions. Of course everyone accuses him of having a hand in nurturing the BBS. I do not believe that he would have done anything on his own will. If he had any role, he may have been asked by President Rajapaksa to turn a blind eye to the nuisance created by the BBS, hoping that he would benefit politically. The BBS was the cause for President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s defeat. From the understanding I have of Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, he is someone who doesn’t mince his words. If he was truly backing BBS, he would have declared it at that time. There was no one who would have challenged him because everyone feared him. He also posses some very good qualities and he is a very good administrator. He cleaned and beautified the city of Colombo. We are beginning to see the mechanism that he set up crumbling. I agree that the current administration doesn’t have the same loyalty from the army workforce as he did, but our political leadership needs to find ways of continuing the good work done by the previous government.
