There’s Little To Cheer About Ranil Wickremesinghe

By Malinda Seneviratne

Malinda Seneviratne

The impending vote of no-confidence on Ranil Wickremesinghe has excited some while made others very anxious. True to form Shyamon Jayasinghe has bravely come to defend Wickremesinghe (Read ‘Why Ranil is still needed). Jayasinghe, again true to form, plays relative merits in this exercise, for it is no longer possible for him to give his hero the character certificate he would have loved to. Wickremesinghe, simply, has shamed himself too much for that kind of blank-cheque-endorsement to fly.

The agitation of this die-hard Ranil/UNP loyalist is not surprising, but in the excitement Jayasinghe seems to have missed a lot of buses. As usual. I say ‘as usual’ because not too long ago he offered a sunshine story about how Ranil and the UNP has turned the economy around (‘The political tug-o-war in Sri Lanka is cockeyed and absurd: only Ranil talks of economic goals’), the errors of which were pointed out in an article titled ‘The Cockeyed & Absurd Claims About Ranil’s Economic Expertise’.

First of all, there’s no provision in the constitution (read the 19th Amendment) to remove the Prime Minister through a no-confidence motion. However, if the majority hold that it does not have faith in Ranil Wickremesinghe, then his position becomes tenuous, considering a) there’s is palpable disappointment in the man within the party, b) the majority of the voting population has rejected the UNP, which secured less than 30% of the vote, and c) the symbolic power of such a verdict.

But then again, Wickremesinghe is not one to take such issues into account. His machinations to keep control of the party leadership are clearly Machiavellian. He had no qualms in accepting the Prime Ministerial post despite not having majority support in Parliament in January 2015. It is quite possible that he would be nonchalant to the last.

The Parliamentary arithmetic obviously favors Wickremesinghe, never mind that he has lost the confidence of the people. There are stories about UNP MPs planning to cross over, but these are just that: stories. We will know when we know. For now, with the 16 TNA MPs pledging to support Ranil, the move by the Joint Opposition (which, let us not forget was initiated by a UNP MP, Range Bandara whose silence appears to have been purchased since) appears to be heading towards failure. The numbers just aren’t there. Why then, did they go ahead, is the obvious question.

Well, a ‘loss’ would give the JO ammunition on several counts. First, they can point out the mismatch between popular sentiment and Parliamentary composition. Second, in the event  President Sirisena and the SLFP backs off, they can expect a further erosion of that party leading to further gains for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna at future elections. Third, it will give relief to Ranil Wickremesinghe in the internal battles of the UNP, thereby paving the way for him to contest the Presidential Election in 2020; he is, without doubt, the preferred opponent of the SLPP.

We will know for sure as time goes on, so let’s stop the speculation right here and focus on the motion.

Here’s a dictionary definition. A motion of no confidence is a statement or vote which states that a person(s) in a position of responsibility is no longer deemed fit to hold that position, perhaps because they are inadequate in some respect, are failing to carry out obligations, or are making decisions that other members feel are detrimental.

The question then is not whether Ranil is the best option (highly debatable, that, anyway!) but whether or not he is fit. It is not even whether those being asked to determine ‘fit’ are morally fit themselves to pass judgment.

Now Shyamon indulges in a long harangue about Ranil’s virtues, comparing Ranil’s emotionlessness with Mahinda’s showmanship. He talks about Ranil’s ‘savvy knack about Sri Lankan politics.’ Well, the ‘knack’ is so savvy that the man led his party to over two dozen electoral defeats, but all that Shyamon seems to have forgotten.

Shyamon takes pains to paint everyone but Ranil as self-serving, short-sighted politicians. Here is a lovely description: “Ranil Wickremesinge’s very dress appearance seems an anachronism. His effort toward installing good governance systems  in the island is subject to ridicule by our pollies. Even most of his own party men do not grasp  the need for such systems. The substantial gains that his government has realised thus far, goes undervalued. Ranil’s  farseeing economic policies and strategies are just a nuisance as they have “no impact” on the voting public.”

Good governance and Ranil Wickremesinghe don’t go together. He has not been averse to bashing skulls and he does interfere with media heads. He hasn’t abducted any journalists, yet, but he was a silent approver of countless abductions, proxy arrests, torture and extra-judicial killings by the UNP government in the 1980s.

His economic policies are not farseeing because he has proved beyond a shadow of doubt that he doesn’t understand the first thing about economics (as was pointed out in the articled linked above). And Ranil is among the most self-serving politicians this country has seen. If Shyamon takes the trouble to read the UNP’s constitution he would learn that Ranil is all about himself and not the party. It was not emotional maturity (as Shyamon believes) but Machiavellian manipulation that allowed Ranil to keep control of the party.

Shyamon glosses over the Bond Scam. He does admit that Ranil could have done better with his appointments but says nothing of the fact that both Arjuna Mahendran and Ravi Karunanayake were ‘looked after’ by Ranil following their respective resignations.

Ranil is no innocent. Shyamon hasn’t heard, perhaps, of Christopher, of Soththi Upali, of Ranil’s exploits at Batalanda. They are all coming out now after his confidant and fall-guy of 33 years tendered his resignation.

None of this counts here. What counts is his involvement in the Bond Scam. He protected and defended Mahendran, who is now on the dodge. He, together with Sirisena, moved to dissolve Parliament just before the COPE report on the Bond Issue was to be released. He got his minions to remove critical sections of the second COPE report. He has clearly prevailed on the Attorney General to treat him with kids’ gloves at the Bond Commission hearings. He gave appointments to both Mahendran and Karunanayake. He is yet to tell us how the UNP, which couldn’t pay the Sirikotha electricity bill, unleashed a multi billion rupee election campaign just 8 months after Sirisena came to power. All this has to be cleared before he can be cleared of involvement in the Bond Scam.

Anyone who votes against this motion would be endorsing all these things. Shyamon says ‘the nation needs him to remain.’ If one played relative merits such a position could be taken, although its defense would be tough.  He thinks that Ranil is needed ‘if Sri Lanka  is to be saved from the mad world of selfish loonies.’ A selfish loony to save Sri Lanka from selfish loonies? I would think not.

Ranil does not, as Shyamon believes, ‘stand apart’. He is a part of the bad lot and is among the worst, clearly.  The only difference is that he wears a coat and a tie. That might fool the Shyamons of this world, sure, but then again the world is not made of Shymons and only Shyamons.

you could come up with definition and with political jargons but ground reality is different . Look at the quality of MR or Goata, or any one now in Sri Lanka. Look at the quality of MS and anyone right now. I do not agree with what Ranil did in Central bank case. That is a grave mistake.. He had apologised to that now . But the truth of matter is there is no one to suite him or excel better than him. That is true .. We expect that he would perform far better than this but he did not deliver it.. He supported corrupt people in former government . His uncle JR would be laughing for this political blunder of his nephew: do you think that JR would have behaved like Ranil .. Ranil behaved like a child . He did not set as a role model for politics . It is said MS wanted to punish all wrong people but It was Ranil defended all corrupt people. Now he sets a bad example for all next generation of politicians in Sri Lanka that they could help each others in corruption. Now corruption is done by all politicians: Ranil is perverting the course of justice: he did not allow the justice takes in right course..
yet, No one is there to replace him now… I do not think Goata could do any better.. or Champika or anyone else could do better, I do not know anything about new law and order minister .. Unfortunately we do not produce leaders .. |Consider Lalith.& Gamini.. They had some charismatic leadership qualities. Ranil did not guide others to leadership..After all childless Ranil is a crafty and foxy politician. He will get away with this motion.. He is cleaver enough. I hope he had learned his lesson now.

      DR SULAIMAN from UK,

Oh! Ranil W has apologized for his conduct in Bond scam and now his all sins has washed away as if he had taken a bath in Ganges. Would you also accept the apology of the Mahinda R as well? You have to be consistent now haven’t you?

And yes indeed. There is no one in Sri Lanka who excels in stupidity and bigotness than Ranil W.

Note what the racist monk said

“If they start coming here and have that much of an imprint, we will have a similar problem to what we’ve had with the upcountry Tamils,” he says. “There is no way to send these people back.”
      http://dbsjeyaraj.com/dbsj/archives/58562

The lazy bums’ ancestors betrayed the people by letting the foreigners in, refused to work hard, and unable to redistribute the estates to the descendants of the original owners even under socialist governments (most estates were newly constructed at the time than grabbed from up country people).

      Thanks for the news.

Read the article first. There is nothing racist about the monks comment’s. When Ceylon was a colony, the Indians brought over by the British were indeed foreigners.

Would Native V. have approved if the Sinhalese worked hard for their oppressors rather than refusing? The Tamils of course will work hard for anyone so long as there is money to be made, now that’s what you call a racist comment.

But most of the so called present day Sinhalese may be even you are descended from South Indians Indians brought over by the Portuguese and Dutch. Many of the so called original Kandyans are also from South India. Look at their names a Tamil who is who. Banda/Bandara from Tamil Pandarar. Menicka from Tamil Manickam. The higher you go in Kandyan society the more Tamil you are by heritage. Don’t post nonsense you anti Tamil with a Tamil name.

Taraki is a Tribal name of some Afghani Pasthun people.

Taraka Sanskrit for “crossing; ferryman; star; eye”.
                Taraka – a Telugu name.

                As per Wiki

            Taraki

We know it is difficult to own up your mistakes though the Sinhala/Buddhists are in total control of the state and government since 1948. By virtue of being majority the state is controlled by the Sinhala/Buddhists. The recent development through out the island selling prime lands to foreigners through front and back doors beg questions? Who decided to borrow loans for Colombo harbour, Matala airport and Hambantotta harbour to either build them or expand them? Who authorise all three projects? What part did Tamils or Muslims have in the decision making? The stupid bigoted Sinhala/Buddhists have been cocking up every project small or large and blame the people who have nothing to do with any of the projects. When questioned their stupidity you turn around and accuse us being racists.

Who made the decision to let Portuguese, Dutch, Brits, Hindians, ….French, …now the Chinese in? In fact it was the betrayal, mismanagement and capitulation of the Sinhala/Buddhists that lead the foreigners to occupy and rule the island for nearly 450 years and recent example IPKF occupation. Who do you think betrayed the Kandyan kingdom? Where did the Portuguese recruit Lascarins (Mercenaries Recruited from Loacal Population) from? The Jaffna Kingdom was captured by the Portuguese using 3000 Sinhala Lascarins.

Are you saying Sinhala/Buddhists never worked for foreigners, supplied them with local produce, bought any foreign goods, …. joined their armed forces, man their bureaucracy, drank their liqueur, ………… provided Kandyan hospitality, …………………………?

            What a big bull?
I suggest you prepare yourself before you start typing in these forums.

Native your sleight of hand is admirable. Many uncautious readers will be swayed by it.

Your first paragraph – every Government since 1948 has had Muslims and Tamils in the Cabinet and beyond. Your claim that they made no decisions is laughable.

Your second paragraph. Very true, the Kandyan chieftans betrayed their King, but this has nothing to do with Indian Tamil immigration under the British or the monk’s comment.

Your third paragraph. Of course Sinhala Buddhists worked for foreigners. Have you not read Nobodies to Somebodies? But that has nothing to do with the fact that the Sinhalese refused to work as slaves on the estates.

Unlike you, I have no insults to end with, only admiration for your Rajapakse-standard claims. You should have been a politician.

Mate NV, whatever you write lose it’s power of persuasion the moment you throw insults at a particular group of people, your arguments sound childish, if you want a good debate my suggestion is to refrain from personal attacks and calling an ethnic group bigots. thugs or racists. There are bigots. thugs and racists in each and every ethnic group, but your approach of insulting a whole group is immature and amounts to hate speech.

The best cause of action is and what they deserve is insult.

” calling an ethnic group bigots. thugs or racists. “

How do you want me to address a saffron clad thug, Right reverent, Holy Sea, His Holiness, …………………… ? How do you want me to address a bigot, racist, a national hangman, a thief, a robber, a stupid, an ignorant, …………………?

Look I am not here to debate, on the contrary I am here to call a spade a spade, no more no less.

By the way you don’t seem to notice nor do you advise other blatant racists, bigots, hate speech, ………………… Double standard perhaps, obsessive hypocrite, selective blindness, maybe rationality has already bid goodbye, …………………….

Is that why your ancestors and the ancestors of 50% of the so called present day Sinhalese were imported from South India by the Portuguese and the Dutch? Whether one work abroad or home slavery is judged by how they are treated, kept, driven, ……………….. by their employers, exploiting economic and social conditions back home.

We allow your ancestors to live, prosper and convert to various religion including Sinhala/Buddhism and later Sinhala/Buddhist fascism in this island although they too were Kallthonies.

Not only we should have given citizenship to all those who toiled and died in order to develop estates but also to those who came here to seek asylum from religious prosecutions and environmental disasters. We need to be consistent with our immigration policies.

Therefore while encouraging people who desperately need a new place, inviting them to come and settle down we also must send all those Sinhala/Buddhist fascists and former ethnic cleansers Karuna, Pillayan, KP, ………………backed to their ancestral country of origin, South India. I guarantee you a seat in the first boat back to India.

That might fool the Shyamons of this world, sure, but then again the world is not made of Shymons and only Shyamons. ” I think that this man is the leader of Black Coat Mafia who steals government treasury and central bank without any fear and remorse.
The other man is “Pol Sambal”. He said, I think in his rubbish first speech to the nation, that he mentioned that he ate Pol Sambal and Rce in a “Belek Pigana” in his child hood days . These two and Wellala TNA got together and put our country back into another 25 years. I am counting the days to see that this useless government would end soon.

I kindly request that you write an article about “Yahalapalanya”, “Pol Sambal” “Appa” and boru TV shows on “Waga Sangramaya”, “Parisara Sangramaya”, “Wasvisa Nathi Hetak”. There were a lot of Sangramayas carried in front of TV cameras. Plus he acted before TV cameras showing how he eats his humble “KehelKole” rapped lunch taken from home. You have enough material to write a good episode.

They think that we are first class “Donkeys”. Because most of the young Sri Lankans voted for this Yahaplanaya government thinking that they will create an Utopia.

But People like us never voted and never forget how they sacked the government servants who participated in a strike for Rs.300.salary hike 1980. We never forget Batalanda and Suriyakanda. We never forget the game of Kalagedi and Lampu in 1983. We never forget the bicycle chain gangs who killed strikers. I think that there should be a special court to take legal actions against this horrible and disgusted man for his past and present crimes including the bond scam.

Ranil Wickremasinghe has still not lost the faith of the public. He is the preferred choice of the public. Ramil’s policy of developing the economy will be promoted and encouraged by the West. People are anxious that Ranil should be given an opportunity and a free hand. The honeymoon between the Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremasinghe has been bitter since the inception itself. President was an obstacle for Ranil’s economic development policy. The corrupted politicians in the SLFP wanted to get rid of Ranil because of their frustration for failure to plunder the wealth of the country. If Ranil is given power and a free hand, economy of the country is bound to boom. People are aware of it.

Ostensibly you set out to take a dig at Shyamon but it is clear your main target is RW. By implication your suggestion is MR team is better?
You say ~ “………..tell us how the UNP, which couldn’t pay the Sirikotha electricity bill, unleashed a multi billion rupee election campaign just 8 months after Sirisena came to power…………………”.
Did it ever occur to check as to how the transition SLPP (few months old, without even a head office) rolled out billions at the recent LC elections?
You mentioned ~ “……..For now, with the 16 TNA MPs pledging to support Ranil……..”.
They have not done that…….not yet
Your tail wagged mentioning ~ ” …………..They are all coming out now after his confidant and fall-guy of 33 years tendered his resignation….”

Dig deeper, you might come to a totally different conclusion. Who else facilitated the scam within the Central Bank/Treasury establishment?

” Ranil and his West appeasing is the biggest obstacle for UNP.”

Oh well, the west opposing SLFP and the clan benefited the most and continues to benefit. All you have to do is simply revisit the contemporary history of this island from 2005 to date.

      “Most of all no patriotism.”

      Gunaratnam,
please educate us on ‘being a patriot’, what does it entail?, ………………
How do you connect patriotism to nationalism, aspirations, deep misplaced emotions, paranoia, national identity, identity, ………. history of ideas, philosophy, social psychology, anthropology, linguistics, artificial nationalism, artificial patriotism, ideal conception of nation, ..?

What is your special claim for a nation for you or anyone to be patriotic?
How do you define power and prestige your imagined claim brings to you or your fellow dreamers?
Do you accept that your special claim means often tyrannising the people in your pursuit of chauvinistic ideals?

Please ignore my comment if you haven’t got a clue.

For Ranil all that matters is Ranil. He is selfish to the core. What has he done during the last 3 years? Oh, the bond scam…that’s enough damage for the years to come.
