Those Who Should Have (But Haven’t) Considered What Niemoller Said!

By Emil van der Poorten –

Emil van der Poorten

When I received from a friend a piece about the very recent investigation of the ethnicity of a prominent member of Sri Lanka’s publishing community by her local constabulary, I was struck by the fact that this lady was one among those whom I’d already categorized (stereotyped?) as among those who disapproved of Sri Lanka’s slide into fascism but who’d done nothing about it and would continue in that same indifferent mode.

To say that the content of her letter was disturbing would be to understate the case. However, suffice it to say that what she’d encountered was in no way surprising to anyone who’d paid even the slightest attention to the serious deterioration of the quality of life in Sri Lanka, with its descent into an indescribable state given the manner in which we started our independent years.

That letter described, in chilling detail, persistent efforts by her local police to ascertain her ethnicity and that of her family and neighbours of Islamic persuasion even though, while her name clearly indicated the connection to Islam, her demeanour and public persona certainly did not suggest even a hint of the Wahhabi ultra-conservatism that many in her community are accused of.

That old lyric of the flower-power years asked of those who turned a Nelsonian eye on the abuse of civility and civilization, “When will they ever learn?” I cannot but invoke that line given that it is so appropriate in its application to those who believe themselves to be politically-sophisticated Sri Lankans.

I have in the past raised this issue, particularly pointing an accusatory finger at such as the “forums” that spend their time tut-tutting around the periphery of the worst abuses of the last vestiges of the rule of law in this land. And suffice it to say that I will not cease to raise this as a damned serious lapse on the part of those with any pretensions to the defence of law, order and elementary decency in this country.

Admittedly, the forces of civilisational darkness keep getting more powerful by the day because the more the-powers-that-be recruit from the ranks of the violent and outright criminal element in our society the more powerful they are likely to get because the recruited individuals and groups, by their very criminality, are increasingly dependent on an all-powerful government for their very survival. Need one spell out then that, when the political tide turns, the likely fate that awaits those who have deliberately visited mayhem, up to and including death, on those who have stood in their path to self-aggrandisement and unbridled power and authority?  Even though few of that number have an excess of brain cells to apply to a contemplation of their likely fate when the tide turns, they are not so stupid as to believe that anything but a “sticky end” awaits them when Sri Lanka’s “Judgement Day” arrives.

That fact is the glue that binds better than any 21st century space age adhesive. And it does, because in circumstances where the ruling clique are devoted single-mindedly to plundering the country in any and all conceivable ways and their acolytes are permitted absolute and complete free rein as long as they do not get in the way of that primary goal, the sky is the limit!

Those who visit all kinds of misery on anyone daring to display the temerity to stand in their way know that once their protection – inclusive of heavily-tinted vehicle windows concealing the occupants, heavily-armed personal security and immunity from what used to be the long arm of the law – is all that keeps them from the inevitable wrath of people who are increasingly hard put to feed themselves and their families.

Suppressing dissent in any and every way possible is seen as the only way to keep the masses from throwing this flotsam and jetsam of a once-civilized country back into an ocean that will take it away from our shores. However, this lot is not making any preparations to “go gently into the night!” Far from it, particularly because that particular option is not likely to be available to those who’ve practiced violent criminality in the name of “governance.”

There is, of course, the business of having various elements of this fermented fruit salad that passes for a national government continue to circle the wagons, firing up, down and sideways at anything moving or stationery.  Given the composition of the current government, this is not hard to accomplish, particularly when it now has become par for the course to have to extend apologies to our giant neighbor despite the fact that Narendra Modi’s lot are the most natural allies that our government could ever have wished for from across the Palk Strait.  Despite the fact that our international credentials in the matter of ill-mannered behavior have been well and truly established, continuing personal abuse of leaders of other countries cannot, in any way, rebound to our advantage and, somewhere along the way, that personal abuse could well cause enough irritation to provoke a response when it is least expected (and most injurious).  Shooting at anything that moves does have some risks attached to it and the recent abject apology to the Indian government could well be the tip of that particular iceberg.

In keeping with the ludicrous invitation extended to the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, to visit Sri Lanka and observe the unfolding Miracle of Asia is the spectacle of jurists from London being invited for all-expenses-paid holidays in Sri Lanka as “advisors” to the current familiocracy’s “investigative” efforts.  One of these men has apparently publicly pronounced his belief that killing 40,000 civilians in order to free 300,000 of their friends and relations, allegedly all being held hostage, is perfectly acceptable “collateral damage.” This certainly reminds me of a certain Desmond de Silva whom I had the misfortune of having in a sub-teen cricket team that I captained such a very long time ago!  It also brought to mind the conduct of his father who, perhaps for the wrong reasons, was a well-remembered member of the Kandy bar and a UNP “stalwart” who avoided any revenge by a vindictive SLFP by keeping his head down, not doing anything to display opposition to it, until JRJ came along to elevate him and others of his ilk to positions of some importance and significant income as Ambassadors. His grandfather whose statue still stands in a little park in Kandy town with one of his hands behind him in a manner that many have suggested was most appropriate was a legend in his time, assuming one wishes to be remembered for the reasons that George E. De Silva was.  Suffice it to say that the third generation also now appears to give ample evidence of the ability to advance its own fortunes, irrespective of what that entails.

Applying the term “ludicrous” to all of this, coming as it does from a government that consistently claimed that there were “zero civilian casualties” in the final days of the war against Prabhakaran’s horde, doesn’t begin to describe our Sri Lankan reality!. However a sidebar to all of this is the fact that a number of writers to various political and current affairs publications, now wearing cloaks of faux-objectivity, are letting leak admissions that a government (and family) that has been very kind to them, might be guilty of some human frailty. This ranges from little “confessions” that members of the Rajapaksa Regime might not have been perfect in the matter of “reconciliation efforts” to acceptance of the fact that members of that group have been in the business of smuggling baby elephants and forging documents in the crudest manner possible to “legitimize” such action.  The next thing you know, some member of the Dead Left will even admit that his leader might be overlooking capital crimes in order to advance their collective political fortunes!  After all, this is the Miracle of Asia and one must be forgiven for living in expectation of more similar miracles to come!

That the allegedly-intelligent, moral and ethical segment of our population chooses to turn a blind eye to all of this certainly suggests nothing less than a suicidal impulse to ignore what Pastor Niemoller had to say about Nazi Germany!

Mr Poorten’s gripe is getting worse ..Isn’t it

First I thought Mr Poorten has embarked on a new mission to protect our Wahabi brethren from BBS,after taking care the Durian guarding community from the bad Sinhala Buddhist dalits..

    But it is not.

It is a plug for Ms Pillai’s 40,000 fatalities figure which forms the basis of her Investigation.

Did these 40,000 people voluntarily go to support Mr Prabakara?.

Were the other 260,000 just onlookers who managed to escape?.

I mean War Criminals would just shoot and shoot but won’t sort or wouldn’t have the time to check the papers.

Mr Mangala Samaraweera who is a good friend of the Wahabi Journalist as well as Mr Poorten,is going to give evidence to both panels.

    Would Mr Poorten follow suit?.

Or just front up to Ms Pillai’s Panel, so that he won’t be grilled on the accounting side of his evidence.

      K.A. Sumanasekera;
Never fails; the gibberish that I seem to provoke from the pseudonym you use! The 40,000 figure was used by YOUR expert, Sir Desmond de Silva, at a gathering of what appear to have been xenophobes of your kind in London! How about putting that in your pipe (with the other substances you seem to use) and smoking it?

“De Silva observed that no country when confronted with a hostage situation can guarantee that an attempt to free the captives will not result in some civilian casualties. “In fact, the death of some hostages has occurred in many operations that are directed against hostage takers. The crime therefore is not committed by the forces of law and order, but by the hostage takers, in this case the LTTE,” he noted.” (Excerpt)

        Emil,
as you can see no numbers were mentioned, but the blame was laid SOLELY on the LTTE like many others have done. You unfortunately, mentioned the number 40,000 as accepted fact. It isn’t.

At least get your generations right. It is “Grandpa’s and Granny’s” house that I live in and I am not about to apologise for earning an honest living without acting as a shill for s government trying to cover up a killing in Northern Ireland (check http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2012/dec/12/pat-finucane-de-silva-report for details which would be a bit more truthful than if published in your journal of choice, The Daily Noise). But then, what would you and your handlers know about earning a living without raiding the public purse or doing cover-ups?

This is what DBS Jeyaraj who is without question one of the most anti-LTTE and (recently) most pro-Rajapaksa commentators reported:
“At the dinner organised by the Association of Professionals of Sri Lankan origin held in April 2012 at The Grange City Hotel, Tower Hill, London to coincide with their Annual General Meeting, Sir Desmond de Silva who was the guest speaker said that killing of 40,000 Tamils by the Sri Lankan security forces to liberate 300,000 Tamils held by the LTTE cannot be called a war crime.”

Also, Sir Desmond who seems only too ready to resort to “Right of reply” with regard to any publication critical of what he has to say with regard to his support of the Rajapaksa government has been curiously silent about what Jeyaraj has published, Mangala Samaraweera’s media release and what appears in CT on this very subject.

            Emil,
De Silva does not have to be a supporter of the Rajapkse government to have said the words as I have quoted, and I am NOT aware that he is. He also denies ever having been invited to or attending the said conference. I myself would have been quite happy to have made the observation as it appears in my above comment. That would not necessarily make me a supporter of the government, but ONLY as a nationalist who loves mother Lanka.

I doubt that DBS Jeyaraj was at the meeting or at the hotel on the said date where quite a lot of Sri Lankan events do take place. I am sure you are not suggesting that he is an ardent follower of DBS Jeyaraj’s blog.? I myself became aware of it only a few weeks ago.

I have now found the article by Samaraweera that you refer to which appeared on the DBS Jeyaraj blog. The allegation against Sir Desmond de Silva was made by Samaraweera (6/8) and NOT by Jeyaraj. In fact the comment that DBS Jeyaraj was a government supporter was a red herring. The Daily FT, in which an article written by a Darisha Bastians, (who in no way can be labelled a government supporter), made the same allegation, was forced to publish a retraction and an apology. If the allegation had any substance the Daily FT would not have done this. That says it all.

International Advisory Council Appointed To Advise On Domestic Missing Persons Probe

          Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam
          July 18, 2014 at 2:47 am

At the dinner organised by Association of Professionals of Srilankan origin held in April 2012 at The Grange City Hotel, Tower hill London, to coincide with their Annual General Meeting, Sir Desmond De Silva who was the guest speaker, said that killing of 40,000 Tamils by the Srilankan security forces in order to liberate 300,000 Tamils held by the LTTE cannot be called a war crime. Most of the Sinhalese present at the meeting applauded him. Several Tamils who were present at the meeting raised objections to it, but it went unheeded. How can such a person with a biased racist view could be in the panel to inquire about war crimes committed by Srilankan security forces.

“Did these 40,000 people voluntarily go to support Mr Prabakara?.”

      You need a few Dorians.

On second thought, having had dorians what would you do afterwards?

Do you remember ritual poems (pantis kolmura) which demands

      Utum govi kulaye kapuvek araganne?

Take a kapurala (poosari) from the noble Govi caste.

So you have no chance of becoming a Kapurala either.

Perhaps you still have a chance when your Vellala mates get the Homeland from Rainbow Ranil…..Or could it be Sobitha, or CBK…or Shirani B

“then what @mara-siri? roll up tightly and stick it up somewhere? “

Lankaweb is constipated with all the lies of Sinhala “Buddhists” and Shills and there is no room for Amarasiri to stick it there at lankaweb.

Yes, Amarasiri is sticking it a lot of places, and the myth holders and liars cannot take it who run the lankaweb, like lorenzo, Jim Softy, Leela, Sumanasekera and other Shills.

At least CT posts your opinions, but Amarasiri is NOT afforded that at Lankaweb.

Why Double standards? It was like the Church banning the Copernican Heliocentric Model.

        Post Script:
Are there liars at Lankaweb? Why is that Amarasiri’s posts give indigestion and constipation to the moderators of Lanka Web when Amarasiri points out the lies and distortions? Is it because Lankaweb is a lie and distortion spreading media of the para-Sinhala Buddhist racists, and there is no room for alternate opinions from Agnostics and Egalitarians? So Lankaweb’s following claim is a lie, and therefore they are liars.

Before Amarasiri started posting on Colombo Telegraph, posted a few posts, but they stopped posting. Then started posting at CT. Them about 1 month ago started posting, and after a couple pf posts, they sopped it.

I am of opinion Lorenzo et al like Jim Softy are that crowd. Did you notice how quiet they were to this complaint by Amarasiri about these Double Standards.

            They practice Double Standards.

They have writers like Shinali Shill Waduge, “Academic” Nalin de Silva ( of the Forest -Portuguese), and few others, who are so brainwashed by Sinhala Buddhism, they cannot think outside the Box. They are shills and whitewashes. Reminds me of Wahhabis.

            They are Para-Sinhala “Buddhist” Wahhabis.

          Amarasiri,
I am sorry to hear about the unprofessional manner Lankaweb has handled your grievences / posts. Since Native Vedda has given you a wealth of contact and other identifying information of this mob (see below), why don’t you take up your grievences with them once more, this time copying your correspondence to CT as well. Hopefully that will force them to act more professionally. Best of luck.

Government plotting to destroy Buddha sasana –Ven. Asgiriya Mahanayake Thero

    http://lankaenews.com/English/news.php?id=14394

Lanka-e-News-06.Aug.2014, 11.55PM) ‘The Government has hatched a conspiracy to destroy the sacrosanct Buddha sasana ,’ no less a Buddhist prelate than Shyamapoli Maha nikaya of the Asgiriya chapter, Mahanayake Ven. Udugama Sri Buddha Rakhitha Thero disclosed. ‘As a member of the Maha sangha it is necessary to expose this without fear, and it is our responsibility to rescue the Buddha sasana from this disaster ,’the Mahanayake added.

The Mahanayake who attended the commemoration ceremony of ‘National dhaham pasala day’ held at the Matale tourist hotel school auditorium yesterday (04),made this shocking revelation .Interestingly while the Mahanayake was exposing the situation in the country that is imperiling the Buddha sasana , the Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne of the Rajapakse government too was present and intently listening.

The Mahanayake went on to elaborate on the dire dangers besetting the Buddha sasana as follows :

‘When constructing temples , a letter has to be issued regarding the land to the government. This requirement is unnecessary .There is no necessity to take steps to meet that requirement. Don’t place signatures on them. Don’t sign for monies paid by the government.

It is stipulated that if the government money is being spent for the construction of temples , the land must be transferred based on documents. This is a government gazette notification.

From the point of view of the maha sangha this gazette notification merits criticism. Whether the Prime Minister (P.M.) is aware of this , we do not know. Being the Buddha sasana Minister the P.M. ought to know this . Notices from the provincial councils have been sent requesting to transfer the lands on which the temples are being developed at state expense .There were also secret information from a source that the Premier is to going be removed from the post.

It is we who requested to appoint you as the P.M. We cannot become timid cats nor can we send cats to perform those onerous tasks. If when temples are being built , letters are being sent inquiring about the ownership of the land , isn’t this a conspiracy aimed at destroying the Buddha sasana ? the Ven. Mahanayake questioned.’

Dimu Jayaratne who spoke subsequently said , he was not aware of what Mahanayake revealed. ‘It was my view that there was no such gazette notification. In any event I shall probe into this and take action ,’ Jayaratne noted.

Myth and Fantasy of the Sinhalas. The Children of the Indian Emperor Asoka were responsible for converting the King of Lanka and his people to Buddhism is nothing but a TISSUE OF ABSURDITIES AND PURE INVENTION of Sinhalas.
    Thursday, 16 June 2011 – 9:45 AM SL Time

The entire Sinhala Buddhist civilization myth is based on the famous flight of Mahinda, the son of Empire Asoka to the island and the conversion of an ancient ruler of Sri Lanka to the Buddhism. The Sinhalese are also proud of the arrival of Bo Tree by Sangamiththa, the daughter of Empire Asoka.

IS THE EMPIRE ASOKA`S CONNECTION TO THE SINHALESE JUST A WILD FANTASY OF THE SINHALESE?

Although the Mahavamsa says that Asoka handed over his own children to the temple and sent them to Sri Lanka to convert the King of Sri Lanka to Buddhism, Asoka has made no mention of this in his own Edicts.

Prof. Herman Oldenberg (1854-1920), the great German scholar of Indology and professor, studied and researched the Buddha and his teachings in Pali. His study on the Buddha, published in 1881, helped popularize Buddhism and still remains continuously in print. In association with Thomas William Rhys Davids (1843 -1922), the British scholar of the Pali language, he founded the Pali Text Society in 1881. Professor Oldenberg translated three volumes of Vinaya Pitakaya texts and many other Pali texts and sutras into English. Thus the contributions made by these German and British scholars in providing broader access to the Buddhist scriptures written originally in Pali, (the language in which the texts of the Theravada school of Buddhism is preserved) are enormous.

In Herman Oldenberg`s assessment the stories related to the conversion of Sri Lanka to Buddhism by Mahinda and Sangamitta are PURE INVENTIONS. As referred to by G.C. Mendis in The Mahavamsa or the Great Chronicle of Ceylon (1950 edition, page xvi and xvii) there are doubts as to why Asoka in his 13th century Rock Edicts, in the Rock-Edict XIII in particular, has failed to mention his own son Mahinda and daughter Sangamitta being handed over to the temple, and also their role in converting the Sri Lankan king to Buddhism.

Asoka, the Mayura emperor, whose imperial name was Devanampriya Priyadarsi, ruled from 273 to 232 BC. His Rock Edicts belong to the 13th year (260 BC) of his rule and the conversion of the Sri Lankan King to Buddhism took place – according to Sri Lankan chronicles – in the 18th year (255 BC) of Asoka`s rule.

The contradiction is that there is a five year discrepancy between Asoka`s edict entries about the missionaries having already been dispatched to Sri Lanka, and the Mahavamsa records of the actual arrival of the missionaries in Sri Lanka. This is beyond comprehension.

Although the Mahavamsa says that Asoka handed over his own children to the temple and sent them to Sri Lanka to convert the King of Sri Lanka to Buddhism, Asoka has made no mention of this in his own Edicts.

The question that begs an answer is: if Mahinda and Sangamitta were really handed over to the temple to become Buddhist missionaries, and if they did really convert the Sri Lankan King Devanampiya Tissa to Buddhism, why would Asoka their father have neglected to record these important events in his own edicts? The NAME SANGAMITTA is, as V.A. Smith thinks, SUSPICIOUS FROM ITS VERY MEANING.

There are quite a number of discrepancies in the Mahavamsa compared to other historical, archaeological and scientific records. Thus Dr. G.C. Mendis, Lecturer in History, University of Ceylon, in his foreword to the 1950 edition of The Mahavamsa (The Great Chronicle of Ceylon), translated into English by Wilhelm Geiger, assisted by Mable Haynes Bode Ph.D, discusses at length these discrepancies as quoted below. Defrayed by the Ceylon Government Information Department, this edition of the Mahavamsa was published in 1950 (and is available on line at: http://www.sinhalanet.com/

The Mahavamsa with all its historical importance, enormity and glory, should be only treated as the oldest and longest MYTHICAL chronicle, a historical poem written by great CREATIVE AUTHORS.
The wild fantasies of `Lion Ancestry` and the myths about the origin of the Sinhala race as pre-destined, true custodians of the island of Sri Lanka and guardians of Buddhism – should be put to rest among the other mythical fairy tales. This needs courage and wisdom from grass root level, as it takes a lot to stand against the nationalistic agenda and the divisive nationalistic culture driven by Sinhala political leadership at the top.

As long as the mythical stories of Mahavamsa are being elevated to reverence as HISTORICAL PROOF of the ORIGINS of the Sinhala race and their historical mission as CUSTODIANS OF BUDDHISM, there will be no true understanding of our common true history.

THE TEACHING OF OUR HISTORY SHOULD NOT BE TWISTED AND TURNED INTO ILLUSIVE NATIONALISTIC SUPERIORITY OF ONE ETHNICITY AGAINST THE OTHER. All those who are born in Sri Lanka, who live and breathe on the paradise island of Sri Lanka today, do descend from shared common origins and are entwined together with one common history, common dreams, hopes for a peaceful prosperous future. We all have collective ownership of our common heritage. We all, with no exception, should have equal birth rights to get inspiration from our common history and common heritage.

It is laughable when all these analyses about what buddhism is and is not come from moors, christians and hindus with little knowledge and much less interest at heart on the subject matter. Theses have been exhaustively examined by prominent buddhist scholars -the likes of late senarath paranavithana, gunapala malalasekerra et.al. With this background, the clowns who make the biggest anti-buddhist ramblings on this forum appear like the proverbial monkeys in a burnt out forest.

The beauty of buddhism is it is not about the messenger – devine or otherwise – but the message. Unlike Islam / Christianity, buddhism does not need the whole world to be Buddhists. No evangelising, conversions, forced, cunning, or otherwise.

“Ehi-passiko”, meaning come and listen, analyse, reason out, see if it agrees with your own understanding, find out if it is helpful to you and /or others around you – both living and even inanimate things like rivers, mountains, oceans and the like- if so accept it , practise and move forward – else reject it.

Dhamma – or the teachings / the way things are – are not to be stuck to – rather it is like a raft one uses to cross a river. After crossing ther river, do not carry the raft on your back -it will cause an unnecessary burden. Rather leave it behind at the river bank and continue your journey.

Buddha did not say “I am the One, the only One. Those who accept me and worship me will go to heaven, others will perish in hell” or similar. If you are inclined for this type of proclamations, Buddhism is not for you, go find another teacher.

Thanks for the article, i was just humming the tune when will they ever learn ♫ Joan Baez – Where Have All The Flowers Gone ♫
You can lead a man to CT but you can’t make him think because they run away – the volatile hit and run terror on CT on any thread.

When will the Sihala Tamil Muslim learn? Mahanama, Koran Bible etc only add to the misery.

India and China alone have 43 ethnicities and Yakkos the S|T|M think they know them while they don’t even understand the many languages and dialects plus most have not even set foot there. To top it these nations are as corrupt as the worlds Boru Lankava. I see this diplomacy that government talks of as finding shills and oiling them which is most disgusting- it makes all hell break loose.

Just because we meet one person from an ethnicity does not mean you understand but it is only constant observation in the real that gives the picture- you can never hide this fact under the carpet it is there to stay.

Social/Political worker cannot solve a problem in the field of development because it is beyond his scope and understanding when the rest like services get knotted as one for people to live. I see this all over Europe; some get better than others for several reasons while the voiceless stay that way with bare minimum – but when you fight it is hell on earth. That is where Lankans are walking.

That sad fact is that today NOT too many of us would put our head above the parapet given the predilection of our fellow citizens to indulge in a bit of stone throwing (or worse) when they do not like what you say.

Apropos Desmond, how nice of him to take on the onerous task of washing some dirty linen for the Regime. The less chivalrous would say that this is his metier, but Dessie himself would say ‘Respice Finem’. So, Wait and see.

Good people, my cook-woman is putting the finishing touches to my favourite Rambutan Cheesecake and as usual this is a huge distraction. Check up on the amazing properties attributed to our humble ‘hairy balls’ – and enjoy the fruit in season.
