President’s Counsel Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, a former ambassador and political appointee of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and top end criminal lawyer has been hired to appear for the petty thief that broke into the Panadura residence of UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera last week.
Warnakulasuriya is appearing in the robbery case for suspect Hiran Priyankara who was granted bail after stealing several items from Samaraweera’s residence.
The President’s Counsel told the Panadura Magistrates Court that the alleged robber had been engaged in a sexual relationship with Samaraweera and had been granted laptops and other gifts by the UNP Parliamentarian.
The suspect’s wife has also submitted an affidavit to Court detailing the long term sexual relationship between her husband and Samaraweera. The Keselwatte Police has been instructed to launch an investigation into the alleged relationship.
Spearheaded by the Ceylon Today newspaper, owned by former Samaraweera associate Tiran Alles, the rebel faction of the UNP is now calling for an inquiry into the UNP Communications Chief’s sexuality.
The newspaper has persisted in propagating speculation that the suspect was involved in a liaison with Samaraweera and is soon expected to launch a campaign to have the MP arrested for violating the Penal Code.
Homosexuality remains a criminal offence under Sri Lanka’s Penal Code and carries a prison term of up to 12 years.
Warnakulasuriya, who is the father in law of UNP MP Buddhika Pathirana – a UNP member also owned and operated by the Sirasa Media Network is believed to have been recruited to appear on behalf of the robbery suspect by Maharaja Chairman Kili Rajamahendran, reliable sources told Colombo Telegraph.

Mangala introduced that sewage spitter
Mahinda Abeysundera to politics and
the media. He betrayed him wholesale.
He introduced Tiran Alles (or Allus) to
politics. He has also betrayed him.
Isn’t he a poor judge of people?

“Homosexuality remains a criminal offence under Sri Lanka’s Penal Code and carries a prison term of up to 12 years.”
What a joke? In this time and age? How come? Is it Uganda we live in?
Answer is simple. Hypocrisy. Sri Lanka has leading politicians who happen to have a homosexual orientation. They do nothing to educate Sri Lankan society about this issue. Instead they survive in the existing hypocritical social system. Exploit it. And even thrive. They never bothered to change this awful, outdated law.
Now gates are open for enemies of Samaraweera to misuse the penal code based on his sexuality. Just to get back at him.
Cheers!

This could be the biggest Sri Lankan knob-jerker since Sir Joseph WEST RIDGEWAY had to deal with in the HECTOR MACDONALD case in 1900. Sir Joe as some of you may know was the Governor of Ceylon and godfather of Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike who went on to become the FOURTH PRIME MINISTER of our blessed island paradise. It was recorded that Sir Joe advised Hector, who was accused of sodomy and pederasty involving sons of some of the English and Native Ceylonese, to return to London in order to prevent embarrassment in Ceylon. It is anachronistic of course that our Penal (surely Penile) Code continues to criminalise homosexuality given that, at a guess, good clutches of our best and smartest are not averse to ‘a bit of the other’.

Our enslaved mindset does not allow us to think of ourelves.
We will only change this outdated anti gay law, if we are advised to do so by masters in the West.

Ben Hurling: point taken and it is indeed sad that we Sri Lankans have to follow or copy, imitate others, and cannot formulate solutions for the issues that confront us. Our statute books are littered with anarchic, anachronistic and obsolete laws that go back to colonial times. So much for our national and political leadership over sixty odd years.

Oscar Wilde that brilliant wit of the 19th.century was accused of Homosexuality and eventually had to pay the supreme price.Sir.Edward Carson QC.also an Irishman, had appeared on behalf of the complainant.Oscar got the better of Sir.Edward under cross-Examination on the Literary side. But on the material side of the case,Sir.Edward won the day.It was a cruel blow. This was in the 19th.century.Society has advanced since then and in the UK.homosexuality has been legalised.Being Gay does not disqualify any person in seeking employment. The problem in Srilanka is that the Law is selectively applied against political opponents.Murder,Rape and similar criminal activities are galore. We are now in the 21st.century.Why not have positive Legislation on the Gay issue?Civilised world does not treat this a crime any longer.

MR want’s to finish off Mangala, because he is the threat to all their woes. Why did a man like awarnakulasuriya represented a petty theft. He is now rewarded with the diplomatic post of Singapore. Some of these UNP members who are in the pocket of MR is shouting to take action against Mangala. Is only being gay is a crime in the penal code. What about bigamy?. How many of the MR clan sleep with other women? Can you name or count them. You need some allegations leveled at him when an election is approching. Time to break the silence Mangala.

Answers to your questions need to be discussed under Law of Contract. The parties mentioned are not insane and therefore questioning what happens between consenting parties in a bedroom should only be done by third and fourth parties directly affected by the act performed by consenting first and second parties. To others it is a story with imagination. It becomes nationally important when the consenting parties are policy makers and if it can be proved that the relationship has influenced national policies.

Tiran is asking the GODFATHERS of RAPISTS, MURDERERS, EXTORTIONISTS and NATIONAL WEALTH LOOTERS to take action against someone who is ALLEGED to have homosexual relationship with an alleged robber. Which is a criminal offence – homosexuality with another person or killing another person! We are against homosexuality as it is abnormal for us but that doesn’t mean it is abnormal for those who are born like that.

Mangala was a powerful Minister in the first Rajapaksha government but he gave up everything because he could not agree with the policies of it while big shots in the UNP crossed to the government side to become Ministers and enjoy perks.
So People like Mangala are very very rare.

They all deserve the pox!
None of the characters mentioned in the comments above mine deserve a second glance in a civilized society. Unfortunately we are not anymore!
Tiran Alles started life as a thug and was thrown out of Royal AND Ananda. This was despite his father being principal of DS Senanayake College at the time. He has no A/L’s unless he printed a certificate himself.
Somehow he managed to ingratiate himself to the powers at the time and became Mangala’s henchman.
We have all been educated about the LTTE bribe to prevent a UNP victory. Mangala has been playing with the truth on that hoping to get maximum mileage from it. He still is.
Remember the time Tiran’s home was fire bombed? These days he has ‘protection’ because he is doing the Rajapakses’ bidding.
Whether Mangala is gay is a foregone conclusion. Afterall, he WAS Mangala Innocence! When there are many laws being openly flouted and lives are being lost, prosecuting him for a private lifestyle is a stretch. Then, stretching things is a Sri Lankan habit, and the sycophants from the govt. side will make sure we are entertained with the truth as well as the lies for months to come!
For now, let the truth prevail and liars be exposed.
That is the job of a free press. Not to repeat any lie uttered by anyone.

There are two separate interesting anecdotes involving S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike,G.G.Ponnampalam and W.Dahanaiake.
In the first incident, G.G. was addressing the Parliament on some topic and SWRD has said that the way G G was speaking he has one leg in Tamil Nadu and the other in Ceylon (as it was known then). GG is said to have promptly retorted,” From what I have heard about my friend I dare not keep both my legs together”. In the second incident, there had been some allegations about women being taken to Srawasti(the then MPs hostel) and someone has said that ,”With our (Caretaker)P.M. any woman will be safe.
That much for being ‘gay’. Both these incidents it is said was taken by the entire house with laughter. In modern days this is not a matter to waste your time legally or otherwise. Surely Hemantha who posed as a forward looking person with Hewamanne,Sachi,Gamani et al should not waste his time on this.
/

Rajapaksa won’t charge Mangala with homosexuality because they know this would invite strong Western response since the West is now quite pro active in pushing for homosexual rights abroad (except in Arab countries that are Western allies).

The French President, for all to see – lives with another lady out of wedlock. The French say – and I agree – that the newest indiscretion of President Francois Hollande is his private affair. Soon President Hollande is due to make his first visit to the White House – where there will be the courtesy Ball (Dinner) For all I can see in that permissive society he may be tolerated to take one of his
two women (so I presume) and everyone may live happily thereafter.
However. it will not be tolerated in stoic Britain if he visits the British Queen. The point is, at the rate the world is speeding towards recognising same-sex marriages/living in’s will we soon see a French or any other male President from France or wherever – doing the Ball Room dance with his own male choice – or the reverse???

Will this Draconian penalty of 12 years for something which is common in the West, appear in the Cameron Harper List of HR violations at the forthcoming Court Sessions in Geneva?.
Will the UNP , TNA manifesto promise to abolish it if they are brought to power by the Diaspora West?.
These are the questions which the ordinary punters in Srilanka are worried about.
Mangala surely can’t be that dumb to dob his bum boy for fleecing the former of a few bottles of imported grog.
There must be something more to it for sure.
Mangala is not only the Right Hand man of the UNP leader, but also his minder, personal protector and the latter’s conduit to the Heavy Hitter HR Brigades in the West.
Here we are talking about Camerons and Harpers and lately Rapps of the US.
Most importantly Mangala represents the Colombo Intelligentsia chapter in the South.
