On Sunday 9th of March, two anti-US protests were held in Chennai against a ‘weak’ US sponsored draft resolution on Sri Lanka, which was leaked during the ongoing 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Organized by non-partisan student groups, the Tamil youth chanted anti-US slogans and called for “boycotting of US products”. First protest was held in a busy shopping mall that included the “taking over” of a KFC restaurant for nearly an hour by the protesters.
The second protest was held at the Marina Beach, where protesters were holding placards with slogans like, “F**k off USA”, “Tamils reject US resolution”, “We piss on anti-Tamil American resolution”, and “Independent Tamileelam is the only solution”. According to some reports, the protesters also burnt “American products” to demonstrate their displeasure over the US sponsored draft resolution. Last year similar anti-US protests were held in Tamil Nadu during the 22nd session of the UN Human Rights Council, that includes the washing of footwear using “American soft drinks” by the students of Bharathiar University in Coimbatore.
