UNP Stands Firm: No National List For Losers

The United National Party has not entered names of their losing candidates on the national list as opposed to the UPFA and the JVP, said UNP Secretary Kabir Hashim through an official press release today, going on to stress that the party is maintaining their stance within the framework and promise of good governance.

However the UNFGG has gone on to appoint losing ACMC Puttalam Candidate M.H.M. Navavi on its list.

The UNP Secretary’s press release also highlighted that Krishantha Cooray, an earlier listed name had voluntarily opted out, providing the party the opportunity to field the 13 best suited candidates from the list of 29 names provided. Cooray had reiterated that he does not have to necessarily be a Member of Parliament to fulfill his political duties.

Meanwhile the JVP who were praised prior to the elections for setting a new trend in the political stratosphere, when they presented a national list full of professionals, intellectuals and civil society representatives, have now shifted their stance, choosing to enter their Matara losing candidate Sunil Handunneththi.

President Maithripala Sirisena’s UPFA led party nevertheless have gone on to field seven losing candidates on their national list out of the twelve names they had provided.

Of the seven losing UPFA candidates stalwarts such as Mahinda Samarasinghe, Thilanga Sumathipala, Lakshaman Yapa Abeywardena and S.B.Dissaayake are now set to enter parliament through the back door.

Owing to the firm stance taken by the UNP not to field losing candidates in the national list, their womens’ and children rights campaigner Rosy Senanayake, seems to have missed out despite obtaining a staggering number of votes, much more than many of those that will now be entering parliament.

UNP national list;

Karu Jayasuriya, Party Chairman Malik Samarawickrama, D. M. Swaminathan, Venerable Athuraliye Ratana Thera, Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne, Thilak Marapana, Professor C. A. Marasinghe, M. K. D. S Gunawardene, M. H. M. Navavi, M. H. M. Salman, Dr. A. R. A Hafeez , Sirinal de Mel and Anoma Gamage.

UPFA national list;

S.B. Dissanayake, Thilanga Sumathipala, Mahinda Samarasinghe, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardane, Vijith Vijayamuni Zoysa , Sarath Amunugama, Malith Jayathilake, Dilan Perera, Angajan Ramanathan, Faizer Musthapa, A.H.M. Fowzie and M.L.A.M. Hizbullah.

Navavi is an ACMC member.According to agreement b/w UNP & ACMC (before contesting elections), ACMC party leader Rishad Bathiudeen had the final say to nominate the member he so wishes after election & recommend same to Kabir Hashim.Due to this Bathiudeen struck off the name of AM Jameel (listed on 6 in UNPs original list) & incl Navavi who had lost with a narrow margin.Similarly SLMC nominated two names of their candidates though they were at the bottom of list omitting Nizam K & Hasan Ali who came on top of list

He is the current Cabinet Minister of Higher Education in President Mahinda Rajapakse’s Government.[1] He was former general secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party. In the 1977 General Elections Dissanayake contested the Hanguranketha Electorate from the Communist Party but was defeated.[2] Dissanayaka contested for the parliamentary election in 1994 under the People’s Alliancefrom the Nuwara Eliya district and was elected to parliament with 38372 votes.[3] He served as the Cabinet Minister of Samurdhi affaris, Youth Affairs and Sports under President Chandrika Kumaratunga. In the year 2000, Dissanayaka and other eight ministers from the PA government crossed over to the United National Party which was a crucial factor in the downfall of the incumbent PA government in 2001.[4] In 2002 he was assigned as the Cabinet Minister of Samurdhi and Agriculture in the UNP government under prime minister Ranil Wickramasinghein addition to being elevated to National Organiser of the party. In December 2009, Dissanayaka crossed over again, to the SLFP.[5]

      Imprisonment
S.B. Dissanayake was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment by five Judge Supreme Court Bench headed by Chief Justice Sarath N. Why put us through the problem of going and voting if you are anyway going to appoint the people whom we have rejected. The leaders of each party might as well appoint all the members and spare us the ignominy of voting.

UNP did not play fair with the fair lady Ms. Rosy Senanayake, who had been a die hard UNP’er for a long time and a minister too. They accepted
ex SLFP’s last minute into the Colombo list of candidates and deprived
her of a seat in Colombo district. Mr.Ranil should have made provisions
to accommodate her in the national list, in the event she lost due to this sudden change done by UNP to include SLFP’ers, to contest under UNP banner. They may leave the party when SLFP gets strengthened under President Maithripala Siriseana.
There could be a three party contest SLFP/UFPA/UNP in the next general
election and is Ranil not going to strengthen his party by holding on to his supporters.

In the matter of appointments to the National List the UNP has maintained good standards – without imposing defeated candidates on the people. Mr. Navavi is not a former defeated MP, it has been suggested. The country suffered a total breakdown of governance, law and order, Police matters etc., under the Rajapakse
regime. The Rajapakses brought governance to comic levels and treated the Government, the Courts, the Police and even the armed forces as their personal property – while the country world watched with sadness.

To the ordinary man in the country it matters less who is in the Big Chair. What matters is the country must be run properly in a manner in which the world does not laugh at us. The dignity of the country must, at all times, be maintained.

While the Ranil-MS government goes into work to usher in unity and economic development the new dispensation also must not relax in its efforts to expose the massive engineered robberies, the amounts plundered and how. As much as the stolen loot must be brought back and accounted for the perpetrators should be identified.
Those who lived luxuriously at the expense of the poor country – such in unnecessary Helicopter savaris, extravagant tamashas overseas etc., should be exposed in such a manner where deterrence is the central feature.

UNP has become very mature and is a decent party while the UPFA is full of rogues and traitors of the highest order

A defeated candidate has been given the mandate by the people and voted out then how come they can sneak in via the national list? after all Mahinda shouts mandate mandate and does the opposite

Over to our very learned lawyer K A Sumanasekera for his esteemed views on the above (minus the crab walk)

UPFA should have followed the same position that UNF took! No seats for losers…

Why did they appoint Hizbullah? Hizbullah supporters were angry but quiet after his sound defeat. But, as soon as he was named in the National List, his supporters allegedly went on a violence spree. Probably this is the first (maybe only) post-election violence this time. Many people were beaten up and at least three are admitted in the hospital with serious injuries.

President should call for an immediate inquiry to find the facts. If Hizbullah and his supporters were behind this rampage, the guilty ones should be severely punished. Nobody should be allowed to commence Mahinda Jungle Rule. I am convinced that Hizbullah should be stripped his MP nomination.

Would Maithri and his secretaries do this????

RE: UNP Stands Firm: No National List For Losers

You do have principles, compared to UPFA and JVP.

Others will come up with all sorts of excuses.

Why is Rosy less qualified than M. H. M. Navavi?

Is Rosy going to get a Diplomatic post? Any other Post? She got over 60,000 votes. Are you going to disappoint those 60,000 voters?

Who is this guy, M. H. M. Navavi. Isn’t he a looser. UPFA list full of losers. The national list has been created to include the buddies of the party leader who get rejected from the general public.

The real intention of the national list was to appoint the people who have excel in education and have a proven track record of skills in various fields that can help to develop the country. Instead we are going to have losers rejected by the people. This is absolutely disgusting. Nothing will change. Business as usual.

What can we say when we have full of rice eating cows in the country.

SB Dissanayake, the foul mouthed, rejected even by his own constituency, has been given a life line via national list, you have got to be joking?. Voters rejected SBD thinking this type of characters would faded off from the limelight, but to give an opening through national list, it tantamount to be a contempt of voters. Cannot be replace SBD with some good characters, even Dayan, I wouldn’t mine. He will write up some fancy stories but I can live with it, but not with SBD, he wont give up his saree business, it is real shame.

Bringing in the rejected socio-political degenerate SBD is one of the many mistakes this simpleton MS will make in his tenure. SBD is despised in the country in as much Kudu Mervin. MS is pushing for several other rejected SLFP/UPFA misfits – which will result in a the jumbo Cabinet. This embarrasses Ven. Sobita Thero, Ranil, SBK and others who want to usher in clean governance. Clearly, he not only fears MR, he is already insecure with Ranil and the UNP. The man is inexperienced as a big time politician, it is said he is even scared of his own shadow.

“Clearly, he not only fears MR, he is already insecure with Ranil and the UNP. The man is inexperienced as a big time politician, it is said he is even scared of his own shadow.”

Apparently he had mentioned somewhere that he did not want to be another (President) Dingiri Banda Wijetunga.

Is it abut the country, the Part or about Sirisena?

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingiri_Banda_Wijetunga

Sri Lankabhimanya Dingiri Banda Wijetunga (Sinhalese: ඩිංගිරි බණ්ඩා විජේතුංග,Tamil: டிங்கிரி பண்ட விஜேதுங்க; 15 February 1916 – 21 September 2008) was the 4th President of Sri Lanka from 1 May 1993 to 12 November 1994, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 3 March 1989 to 7 May 1993 and the Governor of North Western province, Sri Lanka from 1988 to 1989.

        PRESIDENT

As president, Wijetunga set about his work in his own simplistic, inimitable fashion. After the authoritarian Premadasa, Wijetunga ushered in a more political free era.

His rule also coincided with the rise of Chandrika Kumaratunga within the ranks of the SLFP. For some of the elite the daughter of two Prime Ministers was a refreshing contrast to the humble village peasant in President Wijetunga.

He did not believe that peace could be achieved by negotiating with the LTTE. His rather hawkish approach to the ethnic conflict also made him unpopular especially among the minorities who traditionally backed his party. The Eastern Province was liberated from the LTTE during his tenure except Thoppigala.

After a decisive defeat in the Southern Provincial Council Election in 1994, he dissolved parliament prematurely in June that year, in a desperate bid to stem the rising wave of popularity of Chandrika Kumaratunga.

However his party was defeated in the 1994 general election and Wijetunga graciously appointed Kumaratunga as Prime Minister. Even though under the constitution, Wijetunga was bestowed with wide powers, he wisely chose not to exercise much authority, letting the Prime Minister manage the affairs of the country.

He decided not to contest the presidential election and he appointed Lucky Jayawardena as the organizer for his electorate udunuwara. He relinquished office in November 1994 after Kumaratunga was elected President by an unprecedented majority. His political career was Succeeded by Lucky Jayawardena(MP).

People no doubt will applause the decision of the United National Party for not entering names of their losing candidates on the national list. Full credit should go to the leader Ranil Wickramasinghe who has shown that he is a man of principles.

On the contrary what has President Sirisena done. He has entered 7 names of his favourite losing candidates including S.B.Dissanayaka, a person the whole world hates, on the national list. By his action President Sirisena has shown that he is not a man of principles. How can he preach others about “Yaha Palanaya” when he himself does not follow the principles of Yaha Palanaya.

At the end of the day, Ranil is the winner in this situation. He can take control of everything in governing the country sidelining Sirisena who has lost credibility. People will love Ranil not Sirisena after seeing their actions.

There is gender discrimination in Sri Lanka. Rosy should have been no. 1 on the UNP national list.
Ranil will not get rid of the corrupt insider trader at the Central Bank, Arjuna Mahendran, but did not give Rosy a national list spot even though she is honest and did a great job at the Ministry.

Shame on Ranil and the UNP clowns!

1.The UNP stand that election losers who were rejected by the people should not be given national list slots is good. But Rosy should have been an exception because she is a hard worker and there is a lot of sexism in politics because Sri Lanka political culture is CORRUPT AND BACKWARD.

    2. The SLFP national list is an ugly nasty mess, and shows that Maithripala Sisisena is a backward man – with all the losers who to add insult to injury to voters who rejected corrupt foul mouths like Dilan Perera and S.b. Disasaniyaka.

    3. The national list is a) to bring in high caliber intellectuals who can educated the morons in parliament and the masses; b) bring in young intellectuals who can become tomorrow’s leaders.

    4. Moral of sTory. Civil society has to be vigilent – political culture is still rotten in Sri Lanka and the Parliament corrupt clowns witht Mahinda Jarapassa and his cronies back because Sirisena gave them nominations.
Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne should ensure that a Chapter on Good governance of Political Parties must be included in the new Constitution.

Sorry Don Stanley, I do not agree with your views to provide exception to Rosy. You may have your reasons why she should be given a nomination list slot even though she got rejected by the people. But there may be many counter views why she should not. I do not disagree she might have done a good service to the people. So many have done good service to the people silently without any advertisements

One has to learn to accept defeat and you give her a chance now and you will spoil her and that is all. In life many brilliant students have failed exam and they sat again and passed. Accepting defeat is a lesson one should learn and do not deny that to Rosy and spoil her. This short term benefits will only ruin her in the long term and she would regret.

If you can make an exception to Rosy then many others too will claim exceptions and there will be no limit. Including Mahinda Rajapakse and why not he should be spared from all the wrong doings he did because he is the only man who rid of LTTE terrorism. All his murder charges, corruption etc. should be excused.

Have one rule for all and no exceptions. Remember exceptions are limited capitalist class because they have the power to do something even ‘good’ and people of the low class who do not have any means to ‘do good’ so not entitled to any exceptions.

      Don Stanley

Beauty and charm are not enough to win elections. Through the cracks in her mask people saw her cruelty to animals when she used an elephant to carry her huge picture advertising her candidacy along the streets and which had a negative impact and turned people away from voting her as their representative.

Come on please learn to accept defeat with equal stride as victory. These are valuable lessons we learnt in school. She should not use others like you to again ‘advertise’ in Colombo Telegraph and other means and put pressure to give her a nomination list slot.

All these go to judge her strength of character. There are many other ways other than through Parliament to serve people. Accepting defeat with humility and grace is the best she could do and that is the best advertisement she could have.

People like the JVP Sunil Handunnetti will certainly speak for her not because he thinks she is right to ask for nomination list slot (even though she was rejected) but the truth is because he too is in her position.

She will be richly rewarded if she serves the people from outside the Parliament accepting the people’s verdict. Do not take short cuts and short cuts are the longest cuts which I have learnt.

The ideal replacement for the so called voluntarily opted out candidate would and should have been none other than Ms Rosy Senanayake. Giving additional National List slots for coalition partners – well the UNP seems to never learn from the past. Coalition partners have deserted the UNP at the drop of a hat. Why isn’t there an equal or greater proportional Tamil candidates in the National List of the UNP. Sending a message?

  • 0

Don’t trust the JVP. They practice only slogans. They do not have the strength to accept defeat. May I mention they were first to attack Mahinda Rajapakse as a failed candidate rejected by the people and he should give up his aspirations becoming an MP. So now when Sunil Handunneththi got rejected by the people take a different stance. One rule for others and another rule for them. Is this what you practice? Don’t think people are fools just because they are silent.

So why is that, it is wrong for Mahinda Rajapakse to seek premiership and serve the people after having lost the presidential elections but ok for Sunil to seek back door admittance into Parliament through nomination list. I feel JVP as a party should apologize for what they unfairly criticized Mahinda Rajapakse to give up politics because he lost the Presidential elections. JVP please don’t profess on others which you are not prepared to accept when it comes to your turn.

Sunil should accept defeat with equal courage as victory. It only goes to prove JVPs inherent weakness and a good cloak of slogans to cover their weakness and deception. I ask Sunil and the voters at large, what is the purpose of policies one is not willing to practice. A strength of character is truly displayed in moments of crisis and the present events have proved JVP is a party only to promote their selfish interests but cleverly hiding behind slogans and ‘big talk’. Sunil your actions proves that you and your comrades love to be ‘capitalists’ but lack the talent so compelled to profess socialism and bring down capable people to their low level. And you all are opportunists. Nothing else describes you better. We see it very clearly.

Come accept the fact people who have lot of money can do better than those deprived. Many rich people were financially poor to start, but they used their talent and became rich. There is nothing wrong in being rich and you are merely jealous because you do not have the talent to make your money in the legitimate way. Just give a million to a street beggar and he will finish it off in a few days to beg again in the street.

Sunil accept defeat on its own stride and there are many other ways you could serve the people being outside Parliament. This is the best way to prove your strength of character and fairness to all. You should allow another JVPer to accept the nomination slot. What is the purpose of talking equal opportunities to all when you have failed to respect when it was your turn to provide.

JVPers, communists and socialist are formed by lazy and untalented people who cannot face competition and wants everybody valued equally irrespective of talent and output. Communism and Socialism are outdated and failed philosophies and we have seen by our own eyes how countries like China had convincing advancements once they ditched communist ideals and allowed fair competition. China within a matter of a decade now is world’s powerful nation. All this was because all these days China followed communism and kept their people in extreme poverty when the ruling class enjoyed all luxury.

If all are equal all chemical elements of the periodic table should have the same monetary value and gold, sand or lead sold at the same price!

How dare President Sirisena bring in S.B.Dissanayaka into the parliament through the back door after the people rejected him totally. S.B.Dissanayaka is the one who said during presidential elections that he will ” Strip Chandrika Bandaranayaka and drag her along the streets naked”. Irony is that today Chandrika sits with S.B.Dissanayaka in the same committee to prepare the MOU with the UNP.

    Doesn’t she have any dignity?

She does not because she is the one who did the same mistake like Sirisena by appointing the other parasite Mervyn Silva through the back door during her tenure.

RW is a charismatic leader who sets example.

UPFA nominees, it doesn’t matter who ever finalizes they have done a crime selecting few individuals who are not even suitable to step in to parliament.

The worst choices one of nominee wanted the former president CBK to be naked and chased on the road, and another former minister who was a suspect in FCID for misappropriating funds in his ministry later offered poison to others.

if anyone who lost and deserves to be in the parliament that is non other than Rosy Senanayake. The appointment of Mahinda Samarasinghe and Sarath Amunugama is acceptable though.

What a shame . The very purpose of national list, infusing not so politically active yet much needed calibre to the bunch of goons is violated like a daylight robbery. The stance taken by the UNP to not include “losers” maybe right according to the democratic manner. Fully support this. However, Rosy Senanayake lost not because she is ‘unfit’ for the job. She lost because of the last minute entry of Hirunika and Champika. The people ‘spoke’ for superficial reasons.A very unfortunate situation. It is totally our loss.

“Rosy Senanayake lost not because she is ‘unfit’ for the job. She lost because of the last minute entry of Hirunika and Champika.”

However these are your opinion and various people love to give their opinion to justify their wishful thinking. But nothing can beat the people’s verdict and that must be respected.

“not because she is ‘unfit’ for the job” … true enough. Not only in elections, take an academic exam for instance and sometimes a bright student does fail an exam and a single failure in an exam does not declare you are unfit. The best option for the student is to sit again without complaining and giving excuses. Face up to failures with equal courage as a success and that will reveal the true character of Rosy whether she is capable to lead or not. If she takes the nomination list slot which really belongs to someone else then she is certainly a coward cannot face defeat and not fit for the job.

I can confidently tell Sunil Handunnetti is certainly a selfish person and a coward who should be identified and rejected.

UPFA national list entrees to our Parliament is a terrible insult to the spirit of Good Governance. Not to mention our intelligence.

What a motley crew of corrupt monkeys!

What do these people represent or fight for? Except themselves.

What can they contribute to our nation’s well-being in a professional/intellectual capacity?

Why on earth should we maintain these people via Sri Lanka’s most important institution, the Parliament?

Did these people manage to bargain themselves in by promising relative internal peace for the UPFA for the next five years?

If so, why do we allow these useless lunatics to hold a whole nation & its’ dreams to ransom like this?

    Cheers!

The all male selection to the National list clearly shows that the UNP leadership requires education on gender equality issues.

They are advised to request Mrs Rosy Senananayake who is a women’s & child rights campaigner and the former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, to educate these male chauvinists on the obligations of Sri Lanka as a signatory of the UN Human Rights convention to further gender equality.

I am happy to see that this subject has been mentioned in the UNP – UPFA convention. Better late than never!

The complete list of UPFA are a bunch of corrupt scumbags. If these guys are allowed to enter through any door, then one can just as well let MR and his whole bunch all join the bandwagon. I have no objections if one allows honest persons, but these are animals of the lowest grade.
